A Consequence of Opposing the Heroine’s Halo (GL) - Chapter 6
The demonic cultivator’s laugh was like the screeching of an old wooden door—grating and harsh.
Chu Danxue dared not underestimate her opponent. She was on full alert. Beside her, Jun Yining quickly grasped the situation; he scanned the interior with his divine sense and discovered that the teleportation array had been destroyed. Dead bodies littered the area—every single Huajie Sect disciple had met a grisly end.
He cried out in shock, “Senior Sister, this demon has killed everyone here, and the array is ruined!”
Chu Danxue immediately commanded, “Send word back to the sect at once!”
But the demonic cultivator had no intention of letting Jun Yining succeed. A ghost-like claw, billowing with black qi, lunged directly out of the void. The two were forced to focus entirely on the battle.
When “immortals” fight, there is no place for a mortal like Liu Sanye. She immediately pulled Bai Tong away from the scene. However, she didn’t run far; she stayed at a distance, watching and waiting to “pick up the scraps.”
In the original novel, the demonic cultivator was no match for Chu Danxue and was beaten until he had only one breath left. In his desperation, he seized Bai Tong as a hostage to threaten Chu Danxue and successfully made his escape.
However, being a treacherous villain, the demon did not keep his word to release Bai Tong. He intended to kill her anyway, only to be killed by Bai Tong in a desperate counter-attack.
As luck would have it, this suicidal demon carried a Silver-Ring Half-Moon Herb he had just stolen. This herb could nourish and even repair spiritual veins. After the demon’s death, the herb became Bai Tong’s property.
This was a blatant case of the Author giving the heroine a “cheat code”!
Liu Sanye realized: Is this not the heroine’s luck? She thought back to the book’s cover: Steal the heroine’s luck, and you may return. Looking at Bai Tong’s face, her gaze shifted from complex hesitation to firm resolve.
Even if Bai Tong was good to her, she had to go home! She was a heartless transmigrator!
Though Bai Tong was blind, her sixth sense was uncannily sharp. She lowered her eyes and asked, “Are you looking at me?”
Liu Sanye cleared her throat awkwardly. “No, I’m watching them fight!”
“Are you afraid of the demonic cultivator?” Bai Tong continued.
Watching the intense battle ahead, Liu Sanye didn’t feel afraid; instead, she thought it looked quite cool. “It’s alright. They’re pretty powerful.”
Bai Tong replied expressionlessly, “I loathe demonic cultivators.”
BOOM— A massive explosion erupted from the front. The clash of immortals seemed to rend the heavens and earth. Though Liu Sanye and Bai Tong were small fry standing far away, they were still caught in the aftershocks.
The immense force caused the mountain rocks to crack. Countless boulders tumbled from the peak, and the lantern charms surrounding them were blown off the cliff. The world plunged into darkness.
“I can’t see!” Liu Sanye was genuinely startled. Without light, how was she supposed to dodge falling rocks?
Originally, Liu Sanye had been leading Bai Tong, but now Bai Tong took the lead, grabbing Liu Sanye’s hand in a reverse grip. “My hearing is decent. Follow me and dodge.”
“Okay!”
She ran alongside Bai Tong. Above them, the three “immortals” were fighting more fiercely, causing even more rocks to come crashing down. To avoid being crushed to death, Liu Sanye and Bai Tong performed a frantic dance of evasion on the mountainside.
“We can’t just keep dodging like this. Let’s find a cave to hide in,” Liu Sanye suggested from behind.
Bai Tong shook her head. “I can’t see where a cave might be.”
Liu Sanye’s eyes were gradually adjusting to the dark. She could just barely make things out by the moonlight. She pointed to the right. “The left is too steep. Let’s go right. You help me dodge the rocks, and I’ll find a cave.”
“Deal.”
They sprinted to the right. Along the way, rocks shattered all around them, but Bai Tong was always able to pull Liu Sanye out of harm’s way just in time. Liu Sanye, in turn, would alert Bai Tong of cliffs ahead.
Finally, they found a narrow rock crevice to shelter in, but then a gale-force wind began to howl.
“Get down!”
Both scrambled into the crevice. The wind was so strong that Bai Tong lost her grip on her branch. As it was swept away, she instinctively reached out to grab it, but Liu Sanye held her back. “What are you doing?!”
“My cane was blown away!”
“It’s just a stick! I’ll give you a dozen next time. Forget it for now!”
Only then did Bai Tong let it go.
They hid for nearly an hour before the wind died down and the rocks stopped falling. Without her cane, Bai Tong had to feel her way with her hands, but Liu Sanye grabbed her. “I’ve got you.”
Though it was pitch black, with the moonlight, they could see about three meters ahead—enough to ensure they didn’t fall off a cliff.
Liu Sanye stepped out of the crevice and looked at the sky where the battle had been. The figures were gone. At her feet, she saw a pool of thick, dark-red liquid.
According to the book’s plot, this was the moment the defeated demon should be taking a hostage!
Thinking of this, Liu Sanye sprinted back toward the crevice. Sure enough, she saw the fleeing demon flying straight toward Bai Tong.
Liu Sanye nearly spit out a mouthful of blood. She was clearly closer to him, yet this demon went out of his way to bypass her and grab Bai Tong! He had no eye for talent!
Determined to steal the “cheat code,” Liu Sanye didn’t say a word and threw herself directly at the demonic cultivator. Her posture practically screamed at the demon: “Let her go and come for me!”
But the demon clearly misinterpreted her. He narrowed his eyes and laughed sinisterly. “A little brat who wants to play the ‘selfless sacrifice’? Fine, I’ll grant your wish.”
With a wave of his hand, he scooped up Liu Sanye.
Liu Sanye was delighted to have been caught, but Bai Tong, who had followed the sound out of the crevice, turned pale. “Sanye!”
It was as if Bai Tong had been reminded of a traumatic past. Her usual calm vanished, and she let out a piercing scream: “Demon! Demon! I’ll kill you!”
Even thinking with her toes, Liu Sanye knew Bai Tong was remembering the massacre of her family. To prevent the demon from getting annoyed and taking Bai Tong as well, Liu Sanye quickly drew his aggro:
“I say, old grandpa, now that you’ve caught me, what are you waiting for? My seniors are coming! Hurry up and use me as a hostage to run! If you keep dawdling, you won’t be able to get away.”
The demonic cultivator realized she was right. He ignored the hysterical Bai Tong, wrapped Liu Sanye in black qi, and fled from Mount Yuwang into the darkness.
As Liu Sanye looked back at the small, helpless figure of Bai Tong disappearing into the night, she felt a pang of sadness for some reason.
