A Scummy Alpha Supporting Character Accidentally Marks the Heroine After Transmigrating into a Book (GL) - Chapter 13
Yan Nanjue’s gaze fell on Bai Wan’s arm, where a child’s coat was draped. The reason Bai Wan had come looking for them was self-evident.
How long has she been standing there? She couldn’t have overheard our conversation, could she?
The distance between them wasn’t far. Meeting Bai Wan’s piercing, cold gaze, Yan Nanjue’s arms—still holding Bai Qingzhi—went rigid. A fleeting, horrifying thought crossed her mind: Does Bai Wan think I’m depraved enough to threaten a child?!!
The little girl in her arms had already called out happily.
“Big Sister—”
“Xiao Qing, come here.”
Bai Qingzhi turned her head toward Yan Nanjue. “Sister Yan, you can put me down now!”
As Yan Nanjue let go, the little girl, swaddled in the floor-dragging trench coat, stumbled toward Bai Wan. Only when her sister was close did Bai Wan’s sharp gaze shift away from Yan Nanjue. She looked down, her voice uncharacteristically gentle and calm.
“Don’t sneak out when I’m not looking next time. You aren’t wearing enough clothes, either.”
Yan Nanjue watched as Bai Wan stripped the trench coat off her sister and replaced it with the child’s coat.
Her heart went cold.
She hates me so much she won’t even let her sister wear my coat… Am I really going to have to stay in this world for twenty years to clear this Blackening Value?
“Go find your brother. I’ll be over in a bit.”
While Yan Nanjue was lost in thought, she heard Bai Wan’s voice again, still directed at her sister. Bai Qingzhi was a bit confused but obeyed, turning to wave at Yan Nanjue before leaving with the nurse.
Only the two of them remained in the courtyard.
Yan Nanjue felt an inexplicable wave of nerves. My actions just now didn’t count as OOC in front of the heroine, did they?
Bai Wan stood still and calmly held out the trench coat. Yan Nanjue steadied her mind, approached her, and reached out to take it.
As the coat changed hands, Bai Wan spoke. Her voice was a world apart from the tone she used with her sister—cold as an icicle. “Qingzhi is just a child. She’s only five.” She looked up slightly.
“She doesn’t know anything,” Bai Wan said. “She’s too small; even if she knew certain things, she would be powerless to change them. She didn’t choose her birth, and she didn’t choose her illness.” She lowered her posture, choosing to temporarily bow her head to her enemy for the sake of her beloved family.
“Yan Nanjue, don’t drag her into the things between us.”
Yan Nanjue looked down at the dirtied hem of her coat, using it as an excuse to avoid Bai Wan’s eyes.
After a moment, she raised her eyelids. “Whether these two live or die has nothing to do with me, nor do I care. The Yan family has plenty of money; we can afford to raise countless children with heart disease. I’m not so stingy as to begrudge that. But you must remember: the only reason they can live here and stay alive is because you are Mrs. Yan.”
With that, she turned her head and let out a light sneer. That trace of a smile was colder than the wind passing through the hall.
“I’m a businesswoman, not a lunatic. I have no interest in snuffing out lives.”
Yan Nanjue swept a cold gaze over Bai Wan. The latter lowered her long lashes to avoid the stare. Losing interest, Yan Nanjue turned and walked out of the courtyard.
Only after she had walked quite a distance did she drop her mask, screaming in her mind: Holy crap, that scared me to death! If I’d known, I would have sent Bai Qingzhi back sooner. The heroine was just standing behind me watching silently…
The System said nothing.
Yan Nanjue thought back to Bai Wan’s words, suspecting that the phrase “powerless to change” referred to more than just her sister.
【System: You’re thinking along the right lines. However, the heroine is only powerless at this stage. Regardless of whether she blackens or not, she will leave this environment sooner or later.】
Yan Nanjue nodded thoughtfully. “True. She is the protagonist of this book, the core of this entire world.”
They spent three hours at the nursing home. When it was time to leave, the two children were reluctant, each grabbing a corner of Bai Wan’s clothes and looking up at their sister with pleading eyes.
“Can we stay a bit longer? Just a little while…”
Bai Wan placed her hands on their foreheads. “Be good. Go back with the nurse.”
Her tone left no room for negotiation. Bai Xinzhi, being shy, let go and returned to the nurse, though his eyes never left his sister. Bai Qingzhi pouted and followed, but suddenly turned back toward Yan Nanjue and shouted:
“Sister Yan, don’t forget what you promised me! Remember to keep it a secret! It’s our little secret!”
Yan Nanjue couldn’t remember what “secret” she meant for a second. Seeing the expectation on the little girl’s face, she instinctively nodded. Bai Qingzhi cheered and waved vigorously.
Only after they left did Yan Nanjue realize the secret was likely the request to “take care of Bai Wan.” Her gaze flickered toward the heroine and darted away before being noticed.
Bai Wan shouldn’t know what her sister meant, right?
Yan Nanjue was a bit nervous and stole another glance. Bai Wan was looking at her phone, her long lashes veiling her eyes. She brushed a strand of hair away from her face, revealing a very thin, delicate wrist.
The driver pulled the car up. Bai Wan tucked her phone away and got in first, with Yan Nanjue following.
Halfway through the drive, a ringtone broke the silence. Yan Nanjue glanced down; the caller was Ji Ziyi. She perked up; Ji Ziyi was one of the original body’s three childhood friends, and an Alpha.
“What is it?” Yan Nanjue answered.
Ji Ziyi’s voice was languid and mocking. “I heard you’ve been hard to book lately, President Yan?”
Thinking of Luo Shuqing’s message from earlier, Yan Nanjue guessed her intent. “Are you at ‘Suhui’?”
“Mm-hm,” Ji Ziyi said. “Wan-jun and Xiao Qing are here, along with some others from our circle.” Ji Ziyi got up from the sofa and walked into the hallway. “The eldest Miss Luo has invited you several times and you’ve refused. She’s throwing a bit of a tantrum right now… ah, I forgot, she told me not to tell you.” Her voice carried a playful, itchy quality.
Then her tone shifted. “Regardless, someone said they saw you at the suburban nursing home with a very beautiful Omega? That’s quite a rarity, Little President Yan.”
The car was so quiet that some of the audio leaked from the receiver. Yan Nanjue caught a glimpse of a light blue sleeve in her peripheral vision. She sat up straight and denied it immediately: “That’s Bai Wan. We’re visiting her siblings.”
The owner of the blue sleeve remained still, eyes closed.
“Those two kids with heart disease?” Ji Ziyi thought for a moment. “Ah, I see. Luo Shuqing knows about this now. Someone in the booth just blurted it out… couldn’t stop them.”
Sensing the true purpose of the warning, Yan Nanjue became alert. “I understand.”
“Alright. You know Xiao Qing’s personality. Handle it yourself.”
Yan Nanjue hung up, her mind racing. Luo Shuqing was a “Major Character,” meaning she couldn’t break character in front of her. But Luo Shuqing was a time bomb. The original body had handled her feelings with a “cold shoulder” for years. But Yan Nanjue wasn’t the type for that—yet the OOC rules tied her hands.
As she rubbed her temples, she suddenly met Bai Wan’s gaze. The heroine had opened her eyes.
Having heard parts of the call, Bai Wan’s expression was a mix of coldness and disgust.
“You heard that?” Yan Nanjue asked instinctively.
Bai Wan stared at her coldly. “I didn’t ask you to come with me. You insisted.”
Yan Nanjue was speechless. She had only wanted to check on the siblings to make sure they were actually okay.
“Whatever you do with Luo Shuqing is none of my business,” Bai Wan said. “I don’t care about your life, or whether you cheat with some Omega or Beta. But she cannot move in. I refuse to live in the same house as her.”
She looked directly at Yan Nanjue. “Don’t let her disturb my life.”
“—Otherwise, I will tell Grandma.”
The car fell into a deathly silence, as if suddenly frozen.
After a long time, a cold laugh broke the quiet. “…Cheat?”
“Tell Grandma?”
Yan Nanjue’s slender fingers gripped Bai Wan’s chin, forcing her to look up. “Now you remember you’re Mrs. Yan?”
“Just how lowly do you think of me? You slap a ‘cheater’ label on me based on one phone call? Luo Shuqing and I have no romantic relationship. She is a childhood friend, nothing more.”
“Bai Wan, your attitude has successfully annoyed me.”
Bai Wan was forced to keep her head up, her eyes dark and silent. Yan Nanjue scanned her features inch by inch, finally issuing a chilling warning: “You should be glad you have this face, Mrs. Yan.”
“For the sake of this face, I can tolerate some minor mistakes. But don’t forget you broke into my study and stole your ID to try and run away.”
“Did a high fever teach you to be obedient? Did you think I’d grow soft and forget what you did?”
Yan Nanjue lowered her gaze, her lashes partially veiling her dark eyes. She spoke word for word.
“Those documents you took out? I want you to put them back exactly as you found them.”
Bai Wan’s pupils shrank, resistance surfacing in her eyes. But as the car pulled away from the nursing home—the place holding her only family—she clenched her hands and said nothing.
The car stopped at the villa. The butler was waiting. Yan Nanjue signaled her to move aside and led Bai Wan up to the study.
She watched as Bai Wan placed the ID and passport back into the safe.
Then, Bai Wan closed the door with her own hands, locking her freedom inside once again.
