After Becoming a Cannon Fodder Side Character, I Became the Group’s Favorite (GL) - Chapter 2
Sensing Xu Chacha’s intention to seek help, the foster father and mother quickly packed up. They wanted to leave immediately before the group of students realized something was wrong.
Wen Mubai, who had bought the melons, actually hadn’t gone far. She stopped just around a corner, then opened the sweat-dampened banknote.
On the crumpled one-yuan bill, the numbers ‘110’ were written in shaky charcoal pencil.
Wen Mubai didn’t hesitate for a moment. She immediately dialed the number on her phone, then watched the actions of Xu Chacha and the couple through the glass window across the street.
Seeing that Xu Chacha was quickly pulled up by the foster father and pushed to walk back, she quickly spoke a few words to her classmates and followed immediately.
The police station was relatively close, and the police responded quickly. Wen Mubai turned on her phone’s location, and they soon tracked them down.
The police officers were a man and a woman in a patrol car. “You’re the one who called the police?”
Wen Mubai nodded, handed them the written banknote, and pointed at Xu Chacha’s stumbling figure. “It’s that girl across the bridge. She might have also been abused and has injuries on her body.”
When the female officer saw it was a tiny girl and heard Wen Mubai say she was injured, she stepped on the accelerator without a word and quickly approached the trio.
The foster father heard a commotion behind him from a distance and turned around to see the police car chasing them. He made an immediate decision, dropped the things in his hand, and ran off.
The foster mother next to him probably couldn’t bear to leave Xu Chacha behind. She grabbed her arm and dragged her along. Her eyes were fixed on the tricycle not far away; if she got on the vehicle, she would still have a chance to take Xu Chacha with her.
Xu Chacha looked in the direction of the tricycle and shook her head in terror, trying with all her might to shake her off. She desperately dug her fingers into the woman’s hand, but a child’s strength was no match for a farm woman who worked in the fields all day. She was forcibly dragged, and her cloth shoes left a conspicuous drag mark on the cement ground.
This sight made Wen Mubai, who was running towards them, wince. She untied the sun-protection jacket wrapped around her waist and sped up towards Xu Chacha.
“Sister! Sister, save me! I don’t want to go with her! She’s not my mom!” Xu Chacha was so distraught that tears poured out.
The little girl’s voice was a heartbreaking cry. Her fair face and neck were red from crying, and tear drops constantly fell from her red eyes. Each call of “Sister” was like an invisible fist smashing the softest part of Wen Mubai’s heart.
At that moment, she thought, if she could save this girl, she would do anything.
As long as she’s okay.
Xu Chacha was dragged a few steps, the soles of her feet stinging with pain, but she still refused to give up.
Crying and shouting had drained too much of her emotion and strength. Her head was buzzing a little. She saw the tricycle getting closer and closer through her blurry, tear-filled eyes, and a wave of despair spread through her heart.
Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped tightly around her from behind. She felt herself being lifted, and the chest she was leaning against was slightly heaving. Wen Mubai’s voice, still slightly breathless, rang out firmly from above her head.
“Let go.”
At this moment, Wen Mubai’s eyes and expression were fierce, piercing the foster mother with a cold glare. Although she was only a seventeen-year-old girl, she had an undeniable aura and presence.
The foster mother didn’t react, stunned for a moment, and then forcefully tugged at Xu Chacha’s arm again. “Give me back my daughter! She’s mine! I gave birth to her! None of you can take her away!”
She pulled with the force of a frantic wild boar, her strength brutal and irrational. Xu Chacha, whom she was dragging, was being shaken back and forth like a rag doll.
On the other end, the driving police officer had already caught the foster father. As the car stopped, the female officer, holding a baton, shouted at the foster mother, “Put the child down! If anything happens to her, I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your life in jail!”
The word “jail” seemed to shock the foster mother. She shook her head in a daze, then fearfully looked at her husband, who was already handcuffed. The belated feeling of settled despair crept in.
“I don’t want to go to jail! I don’t want to go to jail! She’s my child! She’s my child! I’m not a kidnapper!”
Wen Mubai took the opportunity to wrench Xu Chacha’s arm out of her grip and sucked in a sharp breath at the shocking, bloody marks left by the fingernails.
Xu Chacha’s body was still trembling. She seemed unable to feel the pain, reaching out her arms to hug Wen Mubai’s neck and burying her head in her chest.
Wen Mubai gently hugged her back, offering silent comfort.
“Sister… Sister…” Xu Chacha called out breathlessly, her voice choked with uncontrollable sobs.
Wen Mubai understood her feelings. She silently patted the little sweetheart’s back. Feeling Xu Chacha’s trembling beneath her palm, she spoke.
“Don’t be afraid. Sister is here.”
“Mhm, I’ll listen to Sister. I’m not scared.” Xu Chacha wiped away a tear. The corner of her eye was rubbed red by the rough clothing, but her arms remained tightly locked around Wen Mubai. “I thought I was going to die today.”
Wen Mubai’s gaze deepened. She found it difficult to describe her feelings at the moment.
Looking at Xu Chacha’s height, she didn’t even reach her waist. A child this small should still think of “death” as flying up to the sky to become a star.
Yet, the Xu Chacha in front of her spoke the phrase “I was going to die” so naturally, in a voice that was utterly disarming, making her heart clench.
Recalling the man’s sinister look at Xu Chacha moments ago, Wen Mubai didn’t feel that Xu Chacha’s words were an exaggeration at all.
She couldn’t bear to think what kind of terrifying hell this child would have faced if she hadn’t asked that extra question or snatched Xu Chacha from the woman’s hands.
Wen Mubai’s eyes were filled with complex emotions. She gently rubbed her fingers against Xu Chacha’s dirty cheek, softly wiping away her tears. “Don’t cry. Sister will protect you. And what are you, a little thing, doing learning such inauspicious things to say?”
“Got it. I won’t say it again.”
“Mhm, good girl.” Wen Mubai looked at her with gentle affection.
Xu Chacha cried in her arms for a while, and her sobs gradually slowed down. She blinked her still tear-stained eyelashes, then suddenly cupped Wen Mubai’s hand. Under the other’s questioning gaze, she bowed her head and pressed her soft lips to the back of her hand.
Wen Mubai: “What are you doing?”
“Sister, I will repay you properly for the rest of my life! When I grow up, I’ll protect you!” Xu Chacha raised her tearful eyes and said earnestly.
Wen Mubai was stunned by her action for a few seconds. She looked at the little girl’s clear eyes, which were full of sincerity, and the warm, soft sensation on the back of her hand registered a moment later.
That heart-numbing feeling returned, making her breathing dull and labored.
After a long time, a smile finally escaped her lips. She raised her hand and gently ruffled Xu Chacha’s messy hair. “Alright, Sister will wait for you to grow up.”
Since Xu Chacha and Wen Mubai were the parties involved, after simple treatment for the injury on her arm, they also needed to go to the police station to prepare statements.
“You sit here first. Sister will get you some water.” Wen Mubai lifted Xu Chacha onto a chair and patted her head.
This little sweetheart had better psychological resilience than she thought. Except for a few sobs at the beginning, she hadn’t cried or made a fuss the entire way.
Xu Chacha nodded hard, her short legs dangling, unable to touch the floor. “I’ll sit nicely and not run around.”
Wen Mubai couldn’t resist, reaching out to gently pinch her chubby cheek, her voice soft. “Mhm, you’re the best-behaved.”
She walked to the water dispenser and poured a cup of warm water. She looked up and saw the female police officer who had been on duty had already brought the couple in. The couple’s loud voices kept insisting they were innocent.
“Her injury was just from an accidental fall! Why are you arresting me for something so small! Let go of me!”
“That’s right, that’s right! How could we, as parents, abuse our child?”
The female officer couldn’t be bothered to listen. She pushed them into the interrogation room. “If you’re so innocent, why did you run faster than a rabbit just now? Stop wasting my time and tell me everything, one hundred percent truthfully.”
The voices gradually faded as the interrogation room door closed. Wen Mubai withdrew her gaze and looked at Xu Chacha sitting on the chair. The little sweetheart’s face no longer held its earlier ease. Her two little fists were clenched, and she looked warily in the direction of the couple.
She quickly walked over and placed the warm water on the table in front of her. “It’s okay. The police officer will help you punish them.”
Xu Chacha turned her head. Her two eyes had quietly turned red again at some point. She stretched out her hands and held Wen Mubai’s palms. Her soft voice held a careful timidity. “Sister, can you stay with me?”
The little girl’s hands were very soft and slightly sweaty. Perhaps afraid she would leave, her grip was very tight—so tight that Wen Mubai could feel her faint trembling.
Wen Mubai didn’t pull her hand away. She grabbed a chair from the side and sat down right next to Xu Chacha, then squeezed her little hand back. Xu Chacha’s hands were so small that one of Wen Mubai’s palms could cover both of them. “Sister won’t leave. I’ll stay with you until your mommy and daddy come.”
“Okay.” GZH: lesbian2088, has all lily resources.
Having cried and run all day, Xu Chacha’s nerves were already stretched to the limit. With Wen Mubai’s promise, she felt a little more secure. She sat quietly pressed against her, making no sound.
She needed to sort out her thoughts. She was halfway out of her misery now. The next step was to find the original owner’s wealthy parents.
But that was the problem. The original author was probably in the late stages of procrastination and only referred to the rich couple as “Father Xu” and “Mother Xu” throughout the entire novel, never giving them names.
Coupled with the book’s setting that she was only three years old when she was abducted, she shouldn’t have any memories. If she just rushed up and told the police she was the long-lost daughter of the richest man but didn’t remember their names, the credibility would be too low.
Wen Mubai, who was beside her, had no idea about the little plans in Xu Chacha’s mind. Seeing her looking worried, she thought she was still scared.
Although she had a half-sister, their relationship wasn’t good, so she had no experience with children. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say to cheer Xu Chacha up.
Right, for children, they should all like candy, shouldn’t they?
Wen Mubai reached into her pocket. Luckily, she had a habit of carrying chocolate for energy and still had five or six pieces left.
The chocolate wrappers were gold foil, nestled in her fair palm, and presented to Xu Chacha.
“Is it for me?” Xu Chacha wiped away a tear.
Wen Mubai nodded.
“Then I’ll pick one, and Sister can eat the rest.” Xu Chacha did look much happier. She reached out her chubby little hand, her finger pointing at the chocolates.
“The matcha one looks yummy,” Xu Chacha bent her eyes, picked out the matcha piece, and put it in Wen Mubai’s other hand. “Sister eats this.”
Then she picked up the rest. “Chacha eats this.”
Wen Mubai smiled without speaking, putting the others back. Then she unwrapped the matcha chocolate, held it between her slender fingers, and offered it to Xu Chacha’s mouth.
“Doesn’t Sister like it?” Xu Chacha looked puzzled.
Wen Mubai shook her head. “I like it, so you eat it.”
Xu Chacha’s expression paused for a moment, and then, as if she understood something, she broke into a big smile, looking sweet and obedient.
“Mhm!”
Long after this, when Xu Chacha thought back to her first meeting with Wen Mubai, the memory was always the sweet taste of this chocolate.
However, at this time, Xu Chacha still didn’t know that there would be a “long after” for her and Wen Mubai.
