After Becoming an Alpha, I Became a Charmer (GL) - Chapter 2
The two women’s eyes met. Ruan Wu’s look shifted from confusion to clarity in an instant. She sat up, her hand on her chest, her eyes flashing with a sharp, cold glint before quickly lowering her lashes to hide it. When she looked up again, her gaze was as hazy and mysterious as a rainy day, inviting scrutiny.
Meeting such beautiful eyes up close, Xia Zhiyu’s mind wandered for a moment before she straightened up and said, “Ms. Ruan, last night, I…”
The memory of what happened before they went to bed was blurry for “Xia Zhiyu.” “She” had only had one glass of wine for Ruan Wu at the banquet, which shouldn’t have been enough to cause amnesia.
The wine must have been drugged.
Ruan Wu cut her off. “The wine last night was tampered with. We’ll go to the hospital for a check-up in a bit.”
“Okay, Ms. Ruan,” Xia Zhiyu thought. Great minds think alike. If she weren’t “Xia Zhiyu” and Ruan Wu weren’t the female lead, she’d be excited to high-five Ruan Wu.
What a shame.
Ruan Wu didn’t mention the part about them being in bed together, and Xia Zhiyu didn’t ask.
Seeing Ruan Wu’s bare, pale arm move, Xia Zhiyu knew Ruan Wu was getting ready to wash up. She was quick to say, “Ms. Ruan, I’ll wait for you in the living room.”
Ruan Wu glanced at her back, wondering if the old Xia Zhiyu had ever been so perceptive.
It was just a fleeting thought, and Ruan Wu quickly dismissed it.
She got out of bed, letting the blanket slide off her body. With a look of disgust at the wrinkled clothes on the floor, Ruan Wu walked naked into the bathroom.
Warm steam filled the bathroom as Ruan Wu scowled, cleaning away the marks on her body.
There weren’t many marks, actually. Xia Zhiyu’s movements last night were incredibly gentle, completely different from what she had heard from other Omegas about Alphas’ behavior in bed.
Alphas, when controlled by pheromones and losing their reason, would often hurt Omegas. She had once seen the skin of an Omega who had just gone through a heat cycle; it was a mix of bruises and bite marks, a terrible sight. It was then that Ruan Wu became a staunch single-lifer. Her pride would never allow her body to be dominated by a brute Alpha.
In Ruan Wu’s limited impression, Xia Zhiyu was just a barely competent secretary.
She didn’t like Alphas, Omegas couldn’t handle the workload, and Betas were often mediocre. Of the three, Xia Zhiyu was the best secretary Ruan Wu could find.
But Ruan Wu never expected that Xia Zhiyu would suddenly undergo a secondary gender differentiation, changing from a Beta to an Alpha. Most people’s secondary differentiation happens before they turn eighteen; Xia Zhiyu’s age was far beyond the normal range for this.
Ruan Wu got ready, putting on the new professional suit Xia Zhiyu had bought. When she got to the living room, she found Xia Zhiyu on the phone, handling work matters.
She stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, the golden sunlight bathing her delicate, sculpted face. Her confident smile and assured tone made her look especially captivating.
Ruan Wu couldn’t help but stop, not wanting to interrupt Xia Zhiyu, and quietly stood by to admire her elegant and poised demeanor.
Xia Zhiyu had already noticed Ruan Wu. After a few sentences, she solved the problem, hung up the phone, and said to Ruan Wu, “Ms. Ruan, the driver is waiting outside the hotel. I’ve made an appointment with a doctor at Jiangguang Hospital, which is the closest, so we can get a physical examination as soon as we arrive.”
The hospital under the Ruan Group, which Ruan Wu usually frequented, was an hour away. Also, when the test results came out, Ruan Wu’s parents would definitely be informed. Xia Zhiyu believed Ruan Wu wouldn’t want her parents to know about her accidental one-night stand with her secretary.
As expected, Ruan Wu’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. She looked Xia Zhiyu up and down and nodded, “You arranged everything very well.”
Ruan Wu was never stingy with praise for people she was satisfied with, but such people were rare. Xia Zhiyu was the first Alpha to earn this distinction.
Xia Zhiyu was still on guard. Her mind couldn’t help but constantly replay the novel’s descriptions of the female lead, Ruan Wu, and “Xia Zhiyu’s” tragic ending.
As soon as “Xia Zhiyu” started plotting to seduce Ruan Wu to get some money to pay off her debts, the female lead immediately sensed her ill intentions.
Ruan Wu was skilled at killing with borrowed knives. She would casually reveal “Xia Zhiyu’s” information to a certain obsessive suitor, and without getting her hands dirty, she would successfully get rid of “Xia Zhiyu.”
In Ruan Wu’s presence, the alarm bells in Xia Zhiyu’s mind rang nonstop. All she could feel was vigilance. She had to try to act like the original “Xia Zhiyu” and dared not make a single false move. If Ruan Wu were to discover that “Xia Zhiyu” had a new soul, the consequences would be even more tragic than the original “Xia Zhiyu’s” fate.
Xia Zhiyu’s eyes showed a hint of pure delight at Ruan Wu’s praise, which added a touch of innocence to her casual demeanor. Her thick lashes fluttered, and her eyes, filled with the golden light of the sun, held back her excitement as she said, “Thank you for the praise, Ms. Ruan.”
She was just praised by the ice-cold demon lord!
The sight of Xia Zhiyu trying to suppress the upward curve of her lips was contagious. As Ruan Wu turned to walk out, she couldn’t help but curve her own lips.
Is my secretary this interesting? Why didn’t I notice before?
The drive to the hospital took just over ten minutes. Xia Zhiyu saw Ruan Wu open her laptop and handle some documents, and couldn’t help but inwardly marvel at Ruan Wu’s workaholic reputation.
No wonder she’s the great Omega female lead.
After getting out of the car at the hospital entrance, a nurse immediately came to greet them and escorted Xia Zhiyu and Ruan Wu for their physical exams. A dedicated doctor was already waiting in the consultation room.
A middle-aged female Alpha with graying hair smiled and stood up to greet Ruan Wu. “Ms. Ruan, I’m Dr. Han Yue, chief physician at Jiangguang Hospital.”
Xia Zhiyu knew Ruan Wu didn’t like Alphas. Before Ruan Wu could frown, Xia Zhiyu immediately extended her hand to shake Dr. Han’s on behalf of Ruan Wu. She smiled and said, “Dr. Han, I’ve heard so much about you. I’m Ms. Ruan’s secretary, Xia Zhiyu. When Ms. Ruan said she wanted a check-up today, I immediately thought of you.”
Xia Zhiyu’s smile was infectious. Dr. Han’s smile became much more genuine upon hearing her words. “It’s my honor to consult for Ms. Ruan and Secretary Xia.”
The two chatted back and forth for a few sentences, growing as close as old friends. This made Ruan Wu think more highly of Xia Zhiyu.
After last night, Xia Zhiyu seems to be full of surprises.
After the three sat down, Dr. Han brought up the test results on her computer. After reviewing them carefully, she said to Ruan Wu, “Ms. Ruan, your body is very healthy. The temporary heat cycle passed very smoothly and didn’t cause any harm to your body.”
Ruan Wu’s peripheral vision caught sight of Xia Zhiyu’s suddenly flushed face. She looked up at Dr. Han and said, “This is my first time getting a check-up at your hospital, so Dr. Han may not know this, but I’ve never been marked by an Alpha since I became an adult at eighteen. I’ve always used suppressants to get through my heat cycles. My previous check-ups at other hospitals haven’t been good. The doctors said my hormone levels were unstable and that new problems could arise at any time, so they advised me to stop using suppressants and find a steady Alpha to be with.”
Ruan Wu paused here, deliberately looking at Xia Zhiyu’s expression, but found that it hadn’t changed at all.
Her health was a top secret matter, as it affected the Ruan Group’s stock price. Xia Zhiyu wasn’t surprised by this?
Even Dr. Han, who was hearing this for the first time, was surprised. Why would Xia Zhiyu not be surprised by it?
Ruan Wu’s eyebrows furrowed slightly.
She didn’t know that Xia Zhiyu had already read all about this in the novel, so it would have been a miracle if she were surprised.
Dr. Han pondered for a moment and said, “If it’s really as the other doctors said, then by all accounts, a single marking shouldn’t have been enough for your body to recover so quickly. Unless… your pheromone match with Secretary Xia is very high, perhaps even close to one hundred percent.”
“One hundred percent?”
Ruan Wu frowned. This was not a good thing. If her pheromone match with Xia Zhiyu was indeed close to one hundred percent, it would be like having a living bomb placed next to her.
Ruan Wu would never allow someone who could affect her work at any time to be by her side. She began to consider firing Xia Zhiyu and hiring a new secretary.
“But we ran a pheromone compatibility test on both of you, and your match is eighty percent, which is just the average for Alpha and Omega matches. This is very strange. If Ms. Ruan could let me see her past medical records, perhaps I could find some other reason.”
Ruan Wu felt a sense of relief after hearing what Dr. Han said.
She didn’t actually want to replace Xia Zhiyu, especially after discovering how useful Xia Zhiyu had suddenly become.
Xia Zhiyu then spoke up. “Dr. Han, actually, my rut and Ms. Ruan’s heat were not yesterday. It was only after I took a drink for Ms. Ruan that everything else happened. Also, before that, I was a female Beta.”
