After Breaking Up with the Scumbag Girl, I Became an Alpha [Entertainment Circle] (GL) - Chapter 6
Zhong Yan had been very troubled these past few days. Since the last time Gu Chang’an tried to get her contact information and she didn’t give it to him, he had started sending her things continuously, sometimes small gifts or desserts.
She didn’t believe in receiving benefits without merit. Although she appreciated Gu Chang’an’s looks—she was a face-con—she truly had no other feelings for him. Not to mention they hadn’t said a single word to each other before this. This sudden attentiveness made her genuinely uneasy. As an ordinary Beta, she was nowhere near as beautiful or tender as an Omega, so what exactly was this high-quality Alpha up to?
Zhong Yan was internally panicking. She wanted to refuse him, but Gu Chang’an always sent things through other people, so she never got a chance to reject him. She felt awkward using the gifts, so she just put them all in her desk drawer, planning to return them to him all at once later.
But this wasn’t the thing that annoyed her the most. It was Xu Wuhuan’s gloomy, indifferent expression whenever Gu Chang’an sent her a gift that truly bothered her.
Xu Wuhuan was usually easygoing and indulged her, rarely frowning. Zhong Yan was used to always sticking to her. However, Xu Wuhuan’s current attitude made her genuinely scared. She really wanted to know why she was sulking—was it because of the gifts from Gu Chang’an? If that was the reason, why? Zhong Yan thought listlessly.
But she had to admit, she couldn’t stand Xu Wuhuan being like this. She didn’t know why her own emotions were so tied to Xu Wuhuan’s, but she felt an inexplicable frustration and unhappiness.
Once the clingy Zhong Yan was restricted from clinging, her whole spirit wilted.
Finally, one day, Zhong Yan made up her mind and asked Xu Wuhuan to go with her to Gu Chang’an’s classroom to return the things to him.
Xu Wuhuan was surprised. “Why? Don’t you like him?”
“Who said I like him? I just think he’s good-looking; I’m a face-con, after all,” Zhong Yan said.
“Besides, you look unhappy, so it’s better to just give them back.”
Xu Wuhuan froze, her heart softening. She went with her to Class 1 of the second year, Gu Chang’an and Wen Yi’s class.
Zhong Yan stood outside the door, hesitating, looking very uncomfortable.
Xu Wuhuan frowned. “What’s wrong? Changing your mind?”
Zhong Yan whispered, “I don’t know anyone inside. I feel awkward going in.”
Xu Wuhuan smiled gently. “I’ll return them for you. Wait for me outside.” She took the bag filled with various gifts.
When Xu Wuhuan walked in, the class went silent for a few seconds. Xu Wuhuan was quite famous in school. Female Alphas were rare, and an Alpha as beautiful and smart as Xu Wuhuan was unusual, not to mention her involvement with Wen Yi.
The students wondered why she suddenly came to their class. Was she looking for Wen Yi? Too bad she’s not here right now.
Facing the numerous gazes, Xu Wuhuan walked forward with an air of indifference.
She tossed the bag directly onto Gu Chang’an’s desk like garbage. Gu Chang’an looked up at her calmly.
“Take care of your trash, Gu Chang’an.” She didn’t want anyone to know about her relationship with Gu Chang’an.
Gu Chang’an leaned back lazily, his tone casual. “You seem very angry. Are you interested in this, Xu Wu Huan?”
The students in the class were hiding in corners, enjoying the drama.
Xu Wuhuan smiled a cold, fake smile. “If you have the time for this nonsense, you should spend the effort on getting good grades. Otherwise, that beast surnamed Gu will be disappointed in you.”
Gu Chang’an’s face stiffened. He hated studying, and his grades were poor. Being called out in public by Xu Wuhuan was humiliating.
Xu Wuhuan was satisfied. She smiled faintly. “Don’t touch what you shouldn’t touch, and don’t end up like your father.”
Without looking at Gu Chang’an’s dark expression, Xu Wuhuan turned and walked out of the classroom.
“Did you give them back?” Zhong Yan quickly asked her.
Xu Wuhuan put her arm around Zhong Yan’s shoulder and walked forward, smiling. “Absolutely.”
Zhong Yan turned her head to look directly at her. “Then—are you feeling better now?”
Zhong Yan’s eyes were cautious and timid. Xu Wuhuan couldn’t help but smile, pinching her cheek. “Mhm.”
Zhong Yan also smiled, feeling the frustration of the past few days instantly disappear.
As the two walked up the stairs, they ran into Wen Yi. Wen Yi saw Xu Wuhuan’s arm around Zhong Yan’s shoulder and felt a pang of discomfort.
She smiled and spoke. “Wuhuan, why are you here?”
The third and second years were in different school buildings. Xu Wuhuan rarely came here, so Wen Yi was surprised and secretly a little hopeful.
Xu Wuhuan gave a faint “Oh.” “It’s none of your business.”
She tried to walk past her, but Wen Yi’s repeated enthusiasm was extinguished, and she felt a surge of anger. This was the first time she had ever liked someone this much, yet she was constantly being rebuffed. Jealousy and unwillingness flooded her mind, overwhelming her reason. Seeing Zhong Yan being so close to Xu Wuhuan became increasingly unbearable. As Zhong Yan walked past, Wen Yi stuck out her leg, tripping her.
Zhong Yan didn’t notice the floor and immediately started to fall. Xu Wuhuan’s first reaction was to grab her and pull her back, but due to the momentum, she fell forward herself. She quickly grabbed the handrail, supporting her body and barely preventing herself from tumbling, though she twisted her ankle.
Zhong Yan’s mind went blank for a few seconds. When she reacted, she asked frantically, “Are you… are you okay?”
Xu Wuhuan said calmly, “…I’m fine.”
Wen Yi opened her mouth to say something, but was silenced by Xu Wuhuan’s cold gaze.
Zhong Yan felt deeply guilty. This was not the first time Xu Wuhuan had helped her and gotten hurt each time. She even wondered if her destiny was fundamentally incompatible with Xu Wuhuan’s.
Xu Wuhuan saw Zhong Yan slumped over her desk, looking annoyed and genuinely wronged and sad, as if she had been bullied.
Xu Wuhuan laughed softly. “What’s wrong? Shouldn’t I be the one who’s upset?”
Zhong Yan became even more withdrawn, wanting to curl into a ball, silent and still.
Xu Wuhuan seemed to understand what she was struggling with. She sighed softly, her voice becoming gentle. “Don’t overthink it. Don’t blame yourself for everything. You didn’t do anything wrong, okay?”
Zhong Yan nodded listlessly and asked softly, “Is your… your ankle still hurting?”
“It doesn’t hurt anymore,” Xu Wuhuan reassured her jokingly. “I’m an Alpha. A little injury like this is nothing.”
Zhong Yan blinked her moist eyes and looked at Xu Wuhuan for a few seconds. Xu Wuhuan’s expression was as gentle as ever. Zhong Yan’s heart stirred, and she instinctively rushed forward and hugged her.
“Hey, you…” Xu Wuhuan froze for a second.
“You seem so nice to me. Why is that?” Zhong Yan asked, puzzled and suspicious.
Xu Wuhuan leaned against the wall, stroked her head, and smiled without saying anything.
Her gaze went past Zhong Yan, distant. Something in her heart wanted to blossom. Thousands of thoughts densely intertwined in her mind, clamoring to find an outlet.
After that incident, Gu Chang’an indeed stopped sending things. Wen Yi came once out of guilt but was driven away by Xu Wuhuan’s cold glare.
Zhong Yan couldn’t help but ask Xu Wuhuan why Wen Yi liked her so much.
Xu Wuhuan told her truthfully, “Once in a bar, an Alpha tried to forcibly mark her. I couldn’t stand it, so I helped her, and then she latched onto me.”
“I see,” Zhong Yan said, suddenly understanding. Then she asked curiously, “But you seem to really dislike her.”
Xu Wuhuan pulled at the corner of her mouth, not answering her question.
Why? Because she felt disgusted. Anything Gu Chang’an touched was disgusting to her, and she hated everyone connected to him, as if they were tainted by an awful stench.
Gu Chang’an’s actions, however, struck her like a wake-up call. She suddenly realized she cared too much about Zhong Yan. She had never cared about anyone. Everyone else was unimportant in her eyes. She lived in her own kingdom, discriminating against all outsiders. Those people floated around her like vague shadows; she couldn’t see their faces, they were hideous, and there was no need to remember them.
Suddenly, a distinct, well-defined shadow appeared by her side, slowly taking shape, outlining the unique edges of Zhong Yan.
This was too strange. She and Zhong Yan had only known each other for two months at most. Undeniably, she really liked being with Zhong Yan.
Xu Wuhuan was actually a person with very low self-worth. To outsiders, she was arrogant, beautiful, and a dazzling presence.
The truth was different. Xu Wuhuan had always lived a very boring life—a life of exhaustion and dullness from not being needed or loved by anyone. When she was little, her Alpha father, Gu Yuangming, fell for Xu Chi at first sight and forcibly marked him. The two had no affection and often argued. Later, Gu Yuangming started to despise Xu Chi and watched him die in a searing rut. Gu Yuangming never liked her; he never acknowledged Xu Wuhuan’s existence.
Worse yet, he found Xu Wuhuan’s existence an eyesore. Xu Wuhuan’s eyes and brows strongly resembled Xu Chi. Gu Yuangming was enraged by the sight and inflicted daily violence and verbal abuse. Gu Chang’an and Su Lie gleefully enjoyed watching Xu Wuhuan’s distress.
They taunted Xu Wuhuan’s existence over and over again. Various forms of violence chipped away at her pride like a dull sword, crushing her confidence and optimism bit by bit into dust. Xu Wuhuan had to brace herself to merely survive within her beautiful skin.
Zhong Yan’s dependence on her, her clinginess, made her feel for the first time that she was actually needed, that she wasn’t redundant. Like a swamp, she was deeply submerged in this feeling.
The more a person lacks something, the more irrationally and impulsively they fall into a trap. Excessive desire makes one pounce like a wolf on any slightest movement, pitiful and foolish.
Xu Wuhuan realized belatedly that she might have fallen for Zhong Yan, a ridiculous and hasty development.
[I was born alone into this world. Others rushed past me in a hurry. My heart was a barren land, but in the end, I could not escape the common desire and fell for one person. I was filled with the urge of love, and I wanted to be with her.]
