After Ditching Four Powerful Alphas, I Differentiated into an Omega - Chapter 2
A subtle, gleeful feeling immediately surged in Qiao Yu’s heart.
The system took in her outwardly respectable yet inwardly gloating expression without a change. “Host, if you want to laugh, go ahead and laugh.”
Qiao Yu hailed a taxi on the spot. With an elegant motion, her fair, slender hand folded the long umbrella. “Do you think I’m in the mood to laugh right now?”
Fair enough.
Setting the umbrella aside, Qiao Yu massaged her temples, hoping Jiang Mei hadn’t gotten into any trouble.
The taxi quickly disappeared into the downpour. Jiang Mei stared blankly in the direction Qiao Yu had left, her heart aching as she turned away.
The scene before her eyes began to blur, and the sound of the rain faded away, replaced by a scorching hot midday. That day, a new student suddenly transferred to their class. She was wearing a spotless white shirt and a pleated skirt, a simple yet elegantly refined outfit that set her worlds apart from a work-study student like Jiang Mei.
The transfer student’s presence seemed to be a living testament to the idea that everyone’s destiny is preordained by heaven.
Some people are born as treasured darlings, the apples of their family’s eye, cherished and protected with every ounce of effort.
Jiang Mei thought someone like Qiao Yu would never have any connection with her. But as soon as she returned to her desk, the person in front of her timidly turned around and said in a soft voice, “Hi, my name is Qiao Yu. It’s nice to meet you.”
The hand she extended was slender and fair, with knuckles like smooth jade. It was also trembling slightly with nerves.
Jiang Mei instinctively looked up at her. A black ribbon had been used to casually tie up her hair, creating a lopsided bow that looked surprisingly cute and charming rather than silly.
Perhaps because Jiang Mei didn’t respond for so long, or because she was staring so unabashedly, the hand hovering in front of her slightly bent, looking a little awkward.
Her dark, feather-like eyelashes fluttered down, and Jiang Mei could see a mortified expression on her face, as if she wanted to crawl into a hole.
They were so close that Jiang Mei could even make out the fine, downy hair on her cheeks and the faint, transparent beads of sweat on the tip of her nose.
Jiang Mei couldn’t quite remember what she said in response. She only remembered that, somehow, they became close. Jiang Mei came from a poor background, and most of her classmates were well-connected, wealthy people who looked down on others.
But Qiao Yu was completely different.
She would only pretend to be capricious and bossy while sharing her lunch with Jiang Mei, frowning as she pinched Jiang Mei’s waist. She’d complain, “Why are you so skinny? You make me look so fat when we stand together! I’m on a diet today, so here, you have to eat all of this, don’t you dare leave a single grain of rice!”
When Jiang Mei didn’t move, she would forcefully scoop up a spoonful and feed it to her, feigning anger as she glared. “Don’t you see me as a friend anymore?”
Helpless, Jiang Mei could only accept the food from her hand and spoon.
No one had ever been so kind to her. Jiang Mei had to admit that in that moment, her feelings were complex and subtle. It was an indescribable sensation, but it wasn’t bad. In fact, she felt a greedy desire to have her all to herself.
But she immediately pushed that thought aside.
Jiang Mei’s family was poor, so she was used to wearing only one or two thin layers of clothing year-round. After she differentiated into an Alpha and her body grew stronger, she no longer feared the cold of winter. But Qiao Yu would look at her reddened hands and feel immense heartache.
She remembered that Qiao Yu stared at her hands for a long, long time, so long that Jiang Mei couldn’t help but call her name. The moment the other girl looked up, Jiang Mei saw crystal clear tears welling in her reddened eyes. She quickly composed herself, but her voice still had a catch in it. “I’m sorry.”
Jiang Mei looked bewildered.
“If I had appeared in your life sooner, you wouldn’t have had to endure so much hardship.”
Those simple words made Jiang Mei’s heart leap, and a warm feeling uncontrollably spread through her. Jiang Mei parted her lips as she watched the other girl quickly pull a pair of gloves from her bag and carefully put them on her hands with a pained expression.
She was so careful, afraid of hurting her. Only after the gloves were fully on did she breathe a sigh of relief and proudly brag, “See? I have good taste, right?”
Jiang Mei knew that none of Qiao Yu’s possessions were cheap. The moment she put on the gloves, her fingertips were met with a warm, soft sensation. For a moment, Jiang Mei couldn’t tell which was warmer—the temperature on her fingertips or the one in her heart.
Her heart suddenly panicked. She awkwardly took off the gloves and threw them onto her desk, walking out of the classroom without looking back. “You can keep them. I don’t need them.”
She didn’t turn around, but she could imagine the hurt and confused look on the other girl’s face.
That winter, Qiao Yu never wore gloves again. Instead, she would always cover herself in hand warmers. She would always try to sneak them into Jiang Mei’s pockets or stick them on her body when Jiang Mei wasn’t looking. Jiang Mei always noticed right away, but she would pretend she didn’t, and from the corner of her eye, she would always catch a glimpse of Qiao Yu’s naive, charming, and slightly mischievous smile, satisfied with her small victory.
What kind of girl could resist falling for someone like that?
Jiang Mei’s gaze slowly refocused. A bitter smile tugged at her lips.
She was so wonderful; she was the one who wasn’t worthy of her.
Qiao Yu rushed back to the school, but Jiang Mei wasn’t in the dorms. She even asked everyone at school, but no one had seen Jiang Mei. Qiao Yu’s expression grew strained. It was late, Jiang Mei had been drenched in the rain, and she was only just an adult. What if she ran into trouble outside?
Not giving up, she pulled out her phone. After a beep, the call was immediately disconnected, the other’s phone turned off.
With a cold expression, Qiao Yu left the dorm and resorted to using her connections outside of school. “I need you to find someone for me. The reward is 100,000 yuan.”
After sending the photo, someone replied, “Did you and Jiang Mei have a fight?”
Qiao Yu tilted her head with a blank expression, her words sharp. “Are you going to take the job or not?”
“I’ll take it. Why wouldn’t I? Just wait. I’ll personally bring her to you in less than an hour.”
Qiao Yu’s expression finally softened. The moment she put her phone in her pocket, she didn’t notice the screen light up with a new message: “Jiang Mei is angry, and Yu Yu is angry too. If she can’t be placated, Yu Yu will get even more upset. Are they secretly dating without telling us?”
Qiao Yu opened her umbrella and prepared to head back to the “Heavenly and Human Realm.” A gust of cold wind swept past, and she immediately sneezed twice.
The system piped up. “Host, the weather’s cold. Be careful not to catch one.”
Qiao Yu dismissed it. “It’s fine. I’m going to be the top Alpha in the capital. I’m strong and healthy. A small cold can’t do anything to me.”
She truly didn’t take the weather to heart, but as soon as she got back to the “Heavenly and Human Realm,” she started to feel a bit unwell. She took two packs of cold granules without a second thought. Just as she expected, a new message popped up in the group chat less than an hour later. After learning that Jiang Mei had returned to her relative’s house, Qiao Yu’s strained nerves finally relaxed.
Although she didn’t know if Jiang Mei would see her message, Qiao Yu still sincerely apologized and expressed her desire to make up.
After placing her phone on the nightstand, Qiao Yu hugged a pillow and asked the system, “Can we still go back?”
The system couldn’t give a definitive answer. “I’ll try my best.”
Qiao Yu narrowed her eyes. “Try your best?”
However, she didn’t dare to have too much hope. The greater the hope, the greater the disappointment. She couldn’t help but roll around on the bed twice, burying her face in the pillow. What kind of fate was this? She had offended the female lead of this world right at the start.
Was living to only a hundred years a consequence of offending the female lead?
Qiao Yu couldn’t stop sighing. “Should I hurry up and find a powerful patron?”
She began to seriously consider the feasibility of this plan and quickly listed all the single omegas with powerful backgrounds in the capital. She needed to win back the female lead, but she also had to live her own life. Before Jiang Mei became rich and powerful, she needed to find the strongest backer to protect herself.
Lost in thought, Qiao Yu fell asleep. When she was woken up by her alarm the next day, Qiao Yu’s head was splitting. She wished she could just unscrew it and throw it away.
She tried to speak, but her voice was terribly hoarse.
Qiao Yu pitifully clutched her backpack, whimpering as she squatted down to put on her shoes. “System, I’m dying.”
The system’s calm voice had a hint of change. “Host, you just have a cold.”
Qiao Yu pouted, her watery eyes glaring at it. The system shivered and quickly changed the subject. “Host, after you fell asleep last night, I helped you organize the information on all the eligible omegas in the capital.”
Qiao Yu’s attention was immediately diverted. She spent the entire trip to school reviewing the data, but she wasn’t very satisfied. When she arrived at the classroom door, she stared at a name that seemed particularly familiar. She asked her deskmate, Meng E, and learned that the person was the popular celebrity Song Wanying.
Meng E was a fan of Song Wanying and immediately pulled out her phone to enthusiastically show her. “Look, isn’t my Sister Song beautiful?”
Qiao Yu nodded. “Beautiful.”
Meng E was very pleased with her reaction, her voice full of pride. “Leaving everything else aside, in terms of beauty alone, my Sister Song has never had any competition in all her years in the entertainment industry.”
As soon as Jiang Mei walked in, she saw Qiao Yu staring intently at the radiant woman on her phone with a predatory look.
She glanced at the photo. The woman was beautiful but had a very aggressive and dominant presence. At a glance, she was clearly a top-tier alpha with excellent genes, the kind whose pursuers could circle the capital a hundred times.
The more Qiao Yu looked at Song Wanying, the more satisfied she was. She wished she could marry her on the spot. “My wife is so beautiful!”
Meng E was shocked. “?”
I treated you like family, and you want to get with my idol?
Noticing Jiang Mei’s arrival, Meng E hesitated. Everyone was saying that Qiao Yu and Jiang Mei had a fight yesterday and were going to break up, but Meng E remembered how anxious Qiao Yu was looking for Jiang Mei last night and found those rumors hard to believe.
So Meng E greeted her as she normally would. “Jiang Mei, morning.”
At the same time, Qiao Yu, staring at Song Wanying’s photo, suddenly remembered—
Isn’t this Jiang Mei’s official partner?
