After I Picked Up the Movie Queen Who Was Pretending to Be an Alpha - Chapter 18
By the time Pei Suyuan realized what she was doing, she was too mortified to take her hands away from her face.
She turned around, sobbing out a quick, “Wait a second for me…” before shoving her hands back to slam the door shut.
Complete social death!!! A grown Alpha crying like this!!!
Pei Suyuan slid down against the door, hugging her knees. The tears wouldn’t stop until she was completely cried out. Once her emotions stabilized, she went to the bathroom, washed her face thoroughly, and applied a cold towel to her eyes for a while.
Knowing people were waiting outside, she didn’t dare take too long. She hurriedly changed her clothes and stepped back out.
When she emerged, Wei Jinzhi was gone; only Mu Xinyi was left waiting.
“Where… where is Sister Wei?” Pei Suyuan asked instinctively. Mu Xinyi was playing on her phone, and seeing Pei Suyuan’s dazed, disheveled look, she couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
She walked over and asked, “What was that just now? Were you literally scared to tears by Sister Wei?”
Pei Suyuan shook her head violently.
“No, no! I was watching a movie and couldn’t help it… so I…” Her voice grew smaller and smaller, her face turning a deep shade of crimson.
It was too awkward. She wanted to leave this place immediately, right now!!!
But reality told her that was impossible. She still had to eat dinner with Wei Jinzhi in a bit, and they had to spend the next two days together… No, it wasn’t just Wei Jinzhi; she didn’t even want to face Mu Xinyi.
But she couldn’t hide from anyone. Especially since Mu Xinyi, after hearing the reason, laughed until tears almost came out—and she just kept laughing!
By the time they entered the elevator, Pei Suyuan had to remind her: “We’re about to reach the restaurant. Can you stop now, please?”
Was it really that funny?
Under Pei Suyuan’s baffled gaze, Mu Xinyi reined in her laughter slightly and rested a hand on Pei’s shoulder. “I mean, I’m a little afraid of Sister Wei too, but she’s not that scary. If you really were scared to tears by her… Hahaha!”
Pei Suyuan watched expressionlessly as Mu Xinyi started laughing again. So that’s what’s funny? Whatever. Regardless of why, it was her own fault. It was just too embarrassing.
Pei Suyuan struggled to manage her expression, finally getting her emotions under control right before they entered the private dining room. She asked Mu Xinyi to check if her eyes were still swollen.
Mu Xinyi returned to normal and shook her head. “Not swollen. You look great.” She knocked on the door for Pei Suyuan and left once she entered.
Without Mu Xinyi beside her, Pei Suyuan felt a bit more relaxed—especially when she saw the room wasn’t full yet. Wei Jinzhi and Wang Shiming hadn’t arrived, letting her let out a massive sigh of relief.
But she soon realized that was temporary. Wei Jinzhi was just late; it wasn’t like she wasn’t coming. She tensed up again. Scanning the room, she saw Qiao Yaning surrounded by Wang Pei and Zhai Linna, looking very happy in conversation. Not wanting to join the circle, she sat down next to Jiang Zhan.
Jiang Zhan was a quiet person, so Pei Suyuan could finally, comfortably, shut her mouth.
Not long after, Wei Jinzhi, Wang Shiming, and Lin Ling walked in. Tonight’s dinner was just for the guests and the director; of course, they were only having a meal this nice because of Wei Jinzhi’s presence. Pei Suyuan remembered that for the first episode, they only had boxed lunches, and the filming schedule was much tighter.
A relaxed filming schedule would usually make Pei Suyuan happy, but not today. Because she had just made a fool of herself in front of Wei Jinzhi. And she might have been misunderstood.
There were only three seats left. Lin Ling wanted Wei Jinzhi to take the seat of honor, but before he could speak, Wei Jinzhi casually sat down right next to Pei Suyuan.
Pei Suyuan was so preoccupied with the earlier incident that she didn’t even notice Wei Jinzhi had sat beside her. Since everyone had greeted each other that afternoon and spent time together, there was no need for formalities. Lin Ling immediately asked people to order, asking Wei Jinzhi what she wanted to eat.
“Sweet and sour pork ribs. You guys order the rest.”
Hearing Wei Jinzhi’s melodic voice so close to her, Pei Suyuan flinched back to reality. She stiffly turned her neck to look at her side. Wei Jinzhi looked back, her gaze somewhat cool.
Pei Suyuan pursed her lips, not daring to speak. She lowered her head to type a WeChat message to explain what happened earlier. Just then, Lin Ling asked her, “Suyuan, what do you want to eat?”
“Anything is fine… you guys choose,” she mumbled, scratching her head in an attempt to lower her presence.
The good thing about Pei Suyuan was that she didn’t have many facial expressions to begin with, and her looks weren’t the lively or bright type. Since she was usually expressionless, no one thought much of her behavior.
Only Wei Jinzhi knew exactly how awkward she was feeling.
Finding this version of Pei Suyuan far too interesting, Wei Jinzhi pursed her lips. Under the table, her leg moved slightly, lightly brushing against Pei Suyuan’s leg. Both were wearing long pants, and there were no ulterior motives; Wei Jinzhi simply wanted to tease her.
Sure enough, she soon saw Pei Suyuan looking toward her out of the corner of her eye. Thinking she was being subtle, Pei Suyuan blinked several times as she met Wei Jinzhi’s eyes, and her body even leaned slightly away. She didn’t dare look anymore.
Right then, her phone vibrated.
[W]: Are you very afraid of me?
The question was blunt, making Pei Suyuan want to cry. Did Wei Jinzhi really not know what she was avoiding? She grumbled internally, then glanced up at the chat history and saw another message Wei Jinzhi had sent earlier.
[W]: It seems Xiao Yuan is quite popular with Omegas~
Bah! How was she popular with Omegas? Then she realized she must be referring to the bus ride… when Qiao Yaning was talking to her. But the conversation was all about Wei Jinzhi! The one popular with Omegas was clearly Wei Jinzhi herself! What did it have to do with her?
Pei Suyuan typed away furiously, replying: [I wasn’t crying because of you earlier. I’m not afraid of you.]
When she wasn’t speaking face-to-face, Pei Suyuan felt much less nervous, managing to send such a long sentence. Wei Jinzhi looked at her with a trace of surprise in her eyes and stopped teasing her for a while.
Actually, Wei Jinzhi had realized Pei Suyuan wouldn’t have been scared to tears by her, but the scene was too easy to misunderstand. Since she had felt aggrieved, she naturally had to tease her back.
When the food arrived, Pei Suyuan kept her head down and focused on eating. Though she hadn’t ordered a specific dish, there were things she liked on the table: braised prawns and sweet and sour ribs. She loved seafood and had developed a good technique for it.
While the others chatted intermittently, Pei Suyuan spoke the least, focusing intently on her food with an appetite that made everything look delicious. Wei Jinzhi was indifferent to seafood, but watching Pei Suyuan eat, she suddenly wanted some too.
Not wanting to say it out loud, she sent a message.
[W]: Xiao Yuan, feed me some, okay?
Pei Suyuan, who was mid-shrimp, saw the vibration and looked over. Her face turned explosive red, and she suddenly started coughing.
Since Pei Suyuan was now with Yuefeng and Mu Xinyi was familiar with Lin Ling, the director had been asked to look after her. Thus, Pei Suyuan could usually act quite freely. Being quiet wasn’t a flaw, but her sudden coughing fit drew everyone’s attention.
“I’m… I’m fine, just choked a bit.”
Everyone offered a few words of concern, and Jiang Zhan even poured her a glass of water. Pei Suyuan took it and whispered a “thank you.” Then, she lowered her head and began peeling a shrimp again.
But this time, it wasn’t for herself. It was for Wei Jinzhi.
She was simply too intimidated. While the others were talking to her, Wei Jinzhi’s leg kept touching hers under the table, and she kept sending messages. Every touch and every message meant the same thing: she wanted shrimp. Pei Suyuan didn’t dare disobey.
While the others were laughing and talking, Pei Suyuan secretly slipped a shrimp into Wei Jinzhi’s bowl, then continued eating as if nothing had happened.
There were three or four shrimp in the bowl now. Wei Jinzhi ate them slowly and elegantly. After finishing, she wiped her mouth and sent another message.
[W]: I can make braised prawns too.
Pei Suyuan saw the notification without unlocking her phone. She read it to herself, then looked at Wei Jinzhi with confusion.
Wei Jinzhi smiled back at her. While everyone else at the table was deep in conversation, Wei Jinzhi… was smiling only at her. That secret, hidden feeling made Pei Suyuan’s heart pound wildly.
