After I Picked Up the Movie Queen Who Was Pretending to Be an Alpha - Chapter 19
Because of the braised prawns, Pei Suyuan didn’t sleep very well.
In her dreams, she didn’t know how many shrimp she had peeled, eventually feeding them all to Wei Jinzhi, who was wearing a long black dress. It was the same black dress Wei Jinzhi wore during their first encounter.
Pei Suyuan woke up and covered her face, unable to understand why she would dream of Wei Jinzhi like that. Even now, whenever she closed her eyes, she saw the Wei Jinzhi from her dream—biting her lip and obediently letting Pei peel shrimp for her.
Pei Suyuan spent the entire morning in a daze, which reached its peak when she arrived at the filming location.
At the foot of Mount Lin, Wei Jinzhi was the last to arrive. She wore a white shirt in a cool, youthful style, walking toward the group with elegance. In that instant, Pei Suyuan felt like she didn’t recognize Wei Jinzhi anymore. This look was simply too different from the one in her dream.
She thought about this and then that, failing to hear the jokes from the director and the crowd until Qiao Yaning patted her shoulder and laughed: “Suyuan, you really look like such a ‘Bottom’ (Shou) in front of Sister Wei~~”
Bottom? Why am I the bottom?
Pei Suyuan scanned the group in confusion. Finally, her gaze landed on Wei Jinzhi. Seeing the woman looking at her teasingly, scanning her up and down, Pei Suyuan finally looked down at her own outfit.
Then she was stunned!
In the movie, Qi Yuan is the bottom! Her outfits were all pink and tender, and floral dresses of various styles were her favorite. Pei Suyuan was currently wearing one exactly like that—a pale pink dress that made her look very youthful.
She quickly covered her face, her ears turning pink. Especially with Wei Jinzhi’s gaze just now—cool yet doting—it was truly as if An Chu had reappeared!
Pei Suyuan had watched the original movie last night, so her memory of it was fresh. In the leads’ first intimate scene, An Chu was wearing a white shirt, and while Qi Yuan wasn’t wearing a floral dress of the same color, it was close enough!
It was so annoying. She would rather wear a backless gown or even a miniskirt right now than a floral dress. Anything would be better than this.
The more Pei Suyuan acted this way, the louder the crowd’s laughter became. Wei Jinzhi even walked right up to her. Qiao Yaning, whose eyes usually lit up at the sight of Wei Jinzhi, actually gave up her spot, looking at the two of them with an expression that screamed “I ship it!”
Pei Suyuan was actually taller than Wei Jinzhi, but she was standing on slightly lower ground. Thus, as soon as Wei Jinzhi approached, she pulled Pei into her arms and called out softly, “Xiao Yuan~”
“Yuan” and “Yuan” (the character’s name) are homophones. Coupled with Wei Jinzhi’s intentional, melodic emphasis, no one else could tell the difference. But Pei Suyuan heard it.
Immediately after, Wei Jinzhi leaned closer and breathed into her ear. When Pei’s cheeks grew even redder, Wei said teasingly, “Little Yuan-er, don’t be shy~”
So annoying!!
Once official filming began, the blush on Pei Suyuan’s face finally faded. After the opening segment, the group hiked from the foot of the mountain to the halfway point. The Crossroads had been filmed here in Linshan, and it was during a mountain hike that An Chu and Qi Yuan first met. The two had spent several days and nights at a guesthouse on the mountainside, their love blossoming. This was followed by the storm they faced from their parents.
In this IP adaptation, Qi Yuan’s father had been murdered. The group was to find the killer and play games within the guesthouse. As the plot unfolded, Pei Suyuan returned to her normal state, pursing her lips as she analyzed the evidence.
The person most likely to be the killer was An Chu, and the evidence was very obvious. But the more obvious it was, the more likely it was a red herring—at least, Pei Suyuan felt something was off. She found evidence pointing to the killer being an Alpha who had a terrible relationship with the deceased.
The Alphas present were herself, Wei Jinzhi, Wang Shiming (playing An Chu’s father), and Jiang Zhan (Qi Yuan’s brother). Four Alphas—who had the motive?
Pei Suyuan hadn’t figured it out during the first round of evidence gathering. During the break, she sat in her chair, deep in thought. There were many crew members around, and the break area was crowded; no one noticed her in the corner.
But Wei Jinzhi noticed. And she sat down right next to her.
Once Pei Suyuan fell into her own thoughts, it was hard to pull her out. Her mind was entirely occupied by who killed Qi Yuan’s father; she didn’t notice someone had sat beside her at all. It wasn’t until she caught a strong scent of white tea Alpha pheromones that she knit her brows slightly.
Pheromones between Alphas clash; few would intentionally release them in front of another Alpha unless it was a provocation—or they liked the other person. There were several Alphas present, but who would do this? Pei Suyuan didn’t know, so she slowly turned her head.
Seeing the person beside her, Pei Suyuan blinked several times, deeply regretting her previous train of thought. She had forgotten that Wei Jinzhi’s simulated pheromones were white tea-scented. What on earth was she overthinking!
How embarrassing.
Wei Jinzhi was naturally unaware of Pei’s internal monologue. Seeing her eyes red like a little puppy’s, she assumed the white tea scent had hit her too hard. She found it amusing, but with so many people around, it wasn’t easy to lean in and tease her. She simply smiled and said, “Is the scent of white tea that unpleasant?”
She then shifted her gaze, looking around as if casually saying, “Mmm… I suppose so. After all, it’s an Alpha’s pheromone. It’s simply not as good as an Omega’s.”
The phrase “not as good as an Omega’s” definitely made Pei Suyuan overthink. Now, not only were her eyes red, but the tips of her ears were flushing too. Luckily, her hair covered them, making it hard for others to see—especially for Wei Jinzhi.
Pei Suyuan looked down and let out a soft “Mhm,” mumbling through the comment as she continued to study the script. It was quiet beside her. Just as she thought Wei Jinzhi had left, she suddenly heard the woman ask: “What were you crying about yesterday?”
A night had passed, and Pei Suyuan’s embarrassment had long faded, but being reminded of it by Wei Jinzhi made her want to curl her toes again. Still, crying over a movie wasn’t something she needed to hide.
She put down the script and said casually, “Nothing. I just watched a movie and got moved, so I couldn’t stop.”
“What were you watching?”
“I watched The Crossroads. The part where Qi Yuan commits suicide…”
Hearing The Crossroads, Wei Jinzhi froze for a moment. Then she lowered her head and let out a soft “Mhm.”
Pei Suyuan looked back at her and saw her fingers curling inward. Seeing Pei staring, Wei Jinzhi pick up her script as a cover. Pei Suyuan found it strange. Wei Jinzhi clearly looked unwilling to mention The Crossroads. If so, why participate in this episode? The script and theme were surely decided long ago.
For the rest of the session, Wei Jinzhi remained somewhat silent. Even during recording, she focused seriously on the game and finding clues, no longer making eye contact with Pei Suyuan. Even when the evidence pointed to her and she had to answer questions, her eye contact with Pei was minimal—just as it was with everyone else.
It was as if the movie The Crossroads had triggered some sort of “silence switch” inside Wei Jinzhi.
