After I Picked Up the Movie Queen Who Was Pretending to Be an Alpha - Chapter 6
Walking back, Pei Suyuan pursed her lips and hesitated for a long time before asking Yan Xin, “How did you recognize her as Wei Jinzhi?”
“It’s Wei Jinzhi! Is she really that hard to recognize?”
“Oh, right. I forgot you have slight face blindness.”
Pei Suyuan felt a bit stung by the retort; she opened her mouth to speak but then closed it. She couldn’t help but think back to the scene at the film set. Perhaps it wasn’t that others hadn’t recognized her, but rather that they didn’t dare to disturb her…
A sense of frustration suddenly welled up in Pei Suyuan’s heart. She had overlooked her own face blindness. Even with her eyes covered, Wei Jinzhi was so conspicuous that most people would recognize her instantly.
Because she often struggled to identify people, and because she had been so nervous seeing Wei Jinzhi that day, she had mistakenly thought she was “special” for seeing through the disguise. But it seemed her “specialness” was of a different kind altogether.
Yan Xin noticed her frustration. Thinking Pei was upset about the face blindness again, she explained softly, “Actually, it’s because I saw Wei Jinzhi’s airport photos on Weibo yesterday. She was wearing those exact sunglasses.”
Hearing this, Pei Suyuan felt a bit more relieved and nodded. She stole one last look at Wei Jinzhi in the distance before heading back toward the South District with Yan Xin. They hadn’t gone far when they heard soft voices murmuring behind them. Yan Xin’s body stiffened at the sound, and she quickly pulled Pei Suyuan toward home.
Once they were full and satisfied, Yan Xin collapsed onto her bed the moment they got back. Pei Suyuan felt a wave of laziness as well and sprawled out on the sofa.
Yan Xin’s apartment was significantly larger than Pei’s—a two-bedroom, two-living-room unit—though she had bought it on a mortgage. When they had chosen to live in Huajiang Court together, Yan Xin had urged Pei to buy a two-bedroom unit for the space, but Pei Suyuan was desperate to own a home entirely her own and didn’t want the burden of a mortgage. Even though it was small, she was content.
Resting for a while, the clock soon struck 4:00 PM—the time Yan Xin usually started her stream. When Pei Suyuan had no work or inspiration, she spent most of her time accompanying Yan Xin. Sometimes she helped adjust the lighting, sometimes she handed her supplies, but most often, she played games with her. Pei didn’t have many hobbies, but Yan Xin played many games and always dragged her along. Habits are hard to form but easy to settle into; Pei had grown used to her free time belonging to Yan Xin.
Yan Xin played a few high-ranked matches and then began carrying fans to boost their ranks. After a few rotations of followers, Pei Suyuan spotted a familiar ID: Xin Baby Carry Me. This was the same fan from the morning who had kept spamming for Yan Xin to save her. Pei remembered Yan Xin’s reluctance at the time. On a whim, she switched to Yan Xin’s stream view and discovered this person was the “Top 1” donor on the leaderboard.
No wonder she carries her despite being reluctant, Pei thought.
The two of them shared a subtle similarity: a lack of security. In a world where everything felt indifferent, they could only build that security with money. Pei Suyuan was desperate to make money to achieve a comfortable, satisfying life. Her goal shifted slightly over time—when she had nothing, she wanted a little; once she had a little, she wanted more.
Now, earning money was easier than before. She wasn’t wealthy, but between various gigs, she brought in tens of thousands of yuan a month. Yan Xin earned even more. But they hadn’t reached their ultimate goals yet, so until then, they endured whatever made them uncomfortable. For instance, Pei’s dream was to live off writing moving songs, but that wasn’t easy. So, she took acting gigs she didn’t like. Similarly, Yan Xin loved the freedom of streaming, but she had to compromise—like playing with a demanding “Top 1” donor.
Pei thought for a moment and realized she shouldn’t assume it was a “Brother.” Based on the morning session, the person was likely a girl, though Pei didn’t know if she was an Alpha or an Omega. Her voice was soft, and her pleas for help sounded almost like acting spoiled.
Unlike Pei, Yan Xin had been in relationships before. A bright, cute Alpha like her was bound to be popular. Unlike Pei—a silent, socially awkward Alpha whom most people likely wouldn’t fancy.
Daydreaming while playing a game is never a good idea, and Pei had drifted far away. She was mechanically pressing buttons and following Yan Xin without knowing where they had even dropped. Just as Yan Xin called out that there were people upstairs, a dazed Pei Suyuan walked right up and was immediately knocked down.
She snapped back to reality and crawled down the stairs. She knew Yan Xin was coming to save her. When the revival timer started, she naturally assumed it was Yan Xin. But then she heard Yan Xin’s voice, thick with anger, accompanied by the continuous roar of an M762—Yan Xin was busy in a gunfight.
Then who is reviving me?
Pei Suyuan looked at her screen and froze when she saw the small ID above her character:
[Marshmallow 301]
Marshmallow…
“Jinzhi, don’t you think she’s so cool when she fights?”
He Qinmian sat across from Wei Jinzhi, shaking her phone excitedly with a look that was both charming and silly.
Wei Jinzhi felt a bit helpless. Remembering how He Qinmian had clung to her arm complaining earlier, she smiled. “Weren’t you just complaining that she wouldn’t save you?”
“Okay, stop talking about that!” He Qinmian acted as if a sore spot had been poked, waving her hand and tightening her expression to prevent Wei Jinzhi from teasing her further.
They won that match smoothly. He Qinmian had managed three kills and was as happy as a child. Though they were the same age, Wei Jinzhi always felt He Qinmian was several years younger—full of energy, pure, and innocent.
During the matches, Wei Jinzhi stuck to their agreement: let He Qinmian be saved by her favorite streamer, while she saved the other teammate. Wei Jinzhi naturally didn’t turn on her mic, but He Qinmian had hers on, shouting and cheering the whole time.
Wei Jinzhi had liked this game when it first came out years ago, but she had forgotten about it once she got busy. She wouldn’t have played at all if He Qinmian hadn’t come over to find her. After two hours, her patience was wearing thin.
“Qinmian, this is the last one.”
He Qinmian was in the zone and didn’t even look up. “Okay, okay, I got it.”
In the final match, Wei Jinzhi played well and took the final kill. She then heard a voice coming from He Qinmian’s phone: “Xiao Yuan, this person is actually really good… they even got the last kill.”
After a short silence, Wei Jinzhi heard a low, raspy voice reply: “Yeah, pretty good.”
Wei Jinzhi was a few seconds late returning to the game lobby. He Qinmian looked at her. “Are you still playing? If not, I—”
“I’m playing,” Wei Jinzhi cut her off before she could finish.
He Qinmian was confused. Didn’t she just say she was done? She looked at her with a questioning gaze, but Wei Jinzhi ignored it, looking down at her screen and saying softly, “Skydiving now.”
“Oh, right!” He Qinmian immediately forgot her question and focused on the battle. She was the typical “bad at the game but loves to play” type, her best move being sticking to Yan Xin’s side and begging for revives.
Initially, Wei Jinzhi was a bit speechless, but then her attention was drawn to the other clumsy figure in the squad. She saved that person several times, fulfilling both her agreement with He Qinmian and her own secret whim.
Yan Xin’s stream ended at 7:00 PM. Before logging off, she chatted with her fans for a bit. It was during this time that Pei Suyuan, who was still in the game lobby, suddenly received a message.
[Marshmallow 301]: Is this Cheese?
