After Losing My Memory, I Was Targeted by the Obsessive Movie Queen [gl] - Chapter 15
Lu Youqing’s smile froze on her face, her eyes darkening. She still hadn’t managed to protect this cake—the one she had made with her own hands to celebrate Yan He leaving the hospital.
Yan He hadn’t been discharged, and the cake was no longer exquisite. The patterns, jumbled from the jostling, buried the words she had painstakingly written: “Happy Discharge, A-He.” The first few words were barely legible, but the word “Happy” was completely obliterated. It felt like a mockery—as if asking Lu Youqing how Yan He could ever truly be happy with her.
Lu Youqing suddenly felt a sense of absurdity, followed by a surge of intense resentment. Even the heavens seemed to be playing with her.
She lowered the lid and pressed her temples, which were throbbing with anger. When she looked at Yan He, her eyes were filled with deep apology.
“A-He, the cake is ruined. I’ll make you another one tomorrow,” she said, reaching for the box to cover the ugly sight, but Yan He stopped her.
“No need. It’s still edible, isn’t it?” Yan He looked at her. “Hurry and cut it. I’ve been craving it for a long time, just waiting to eat.”
Lu Youqing hesitated, her expression growing complex as she looked at the cake. Ultimately, she listened to Yan He and prepared to cut it with a knife.
But as she set the lid down, she realized that in her haste, she had left the knife, forks, and plates at home.
Lu Youqing’s patience finally snapped. Her already foul mood worsened as she stared silently at the blurred handwriting on the cake, her face as grim as a gathering storm.
Yan He noticed that Lu Youqing hadn’t brought the utensils. She suppressed her own bitterness and offered a comforting smile: “It… it’s okay. I can eat the whole thing like this.”
“I’ll go buy some. It’s fine. The nearest bakery is only a few minutes’ drive away. I’ll be right back.” Lu Youqing leaned over and kissed Yan He’s forehead. It was a heavy kiss, meant not just to comfort Yan He, but to soothe her own restless heart.
The kiss was fleeting; perhaps fearing Yan He would push her away again, the touch left Yan He’s forehead almost instantly. Before Yan He even realized it, Lu Youqing had already turned the handle and left.
Yan He sat in silence with her head bowed, her fingers curling slightly. She raised a hand to touch her forehead, her expression complicated.
The room fell into silence. She looked out the window. The darkness crept through the cracks in the glass, swirling in the room; it seemed even the lamplight couldn’t stop its spread.
Everything that happened this afternoon was a mess—so messy that she hadn’t yet found a single thread of logic to process it. Looking at the empty room, Yan He suddenly didn’t want to stay there anymore. She wanted to leave immediately, to understand this city, to understand Lu Youqing, and to understand herself.
Today’s experience told her that with her memory gone, she was helpless. When her fiancée went missing for hours, all she could do was call someone else for help. She didn’t even know where their home was. She couldn’t go anywhere.
The lingering fear of that moment still made her heart skip a beat. Yan He didn’t want to experience it again. For the first time, she had a powerful, urgent desire to leave the hospital.
A sharp pain throbbed deep in her mind—the sequela of the car accident. Yan He clutched her head, waiting for the pain to slowly subside. Amidst her drifting thoughts, she made a silent vow: she would leave as soon as she and Lu Youqing finished the cake.
When Lu Youqing returned, she was holding a brand-new cake and a set of utensils. She had begged a bakery owner to let her make it herself. Her chaotic thoughts finally settled, and looking at the cake in her hands, she smiled.
This time, she very cautiously wrote the six words “Happy Discharge, Yan He.” To ensure they wouldn’t be blurred again, she even embedded the same words into the cake base itself.
Although dealing with the reporters had taken some time, thinking about Yan He eating this cake—loaded with intense love and possessiveness—made the day’s ordeal seem worth it.
In the elevator, as her emotions calmed, she noticed a stinging pain on the back of her left hand. Looking down, she saw a scratch she hadn’t noticed before; the blood had already dried.
She frowned and casually wiped the wound with a tissue, cleaning away the blood. Then, she tugged her coat sleeve down to hide the injury.
A-He mustn’t see this.
Reaching her floor, Lu Youqing pushed open the door, ready to call out to Yan He, but her gaze fell on a curled-up figure on the bed. She froze for a few seconds.
She rushed over, setting the items down, only to find that Yan He had fallen asleep, nestled at the edge of the bed with her head down and eyes closed, like a small, sleeping animal.
Lu Youqing’s heart felt as if it had been pricked by a needle; a mix of love and bitterness welled up. She looked at Yan He with pity, wanting to help her lie down properly.
But the moment her hand touched Yan He, Yan He frowned slightly and slowly opened her eyes, waking from her slumber.
Yan He was a bit dazed upon waking. She looked up from the arm in front of her to meet Lu Youqing’s misty eyes. She smiled softly.
“You’re back.”
“A-He.” Catching Yan He’s clear gaze, Lu Youqing could no longer control the bitterness in her heart. She leaned over to embrace Yan He, pressing tightly against her shoulder.
“I’m sorry. Today was all my fault; I made you sad.” If she hadn’t been late, they might be home by now, perhaps already sleeping in each other’s arms.
Lu Youqing’s movement was sudden, leaving Yan He a bit bewildered. “I wasn’t sad. It was just the sequela from the accident. My head hurt a bit, that’s all.” As she spoke, she reached up to steady her still-muddled head, trying to clear her mind.
Sensing the movement, Lu Youqing quickly rose to massage her temples. “Does it still hurt?”
Yan He shook her head. “It’s gone now.” She looked toward the new cake box and realized Lu Youqing had bought another one. She took a trembling breath and spoke with a forced smile: “The cake… we haven’t eaten the cake yet. Let’s finish it, do the check-up, and get out of here.”
Lu Youqing’s hands paused. She thought of the reporters still crouching downstairs, waiting for her to reappear. They were there specifically for her and Yan He. If they left now, they would definitely be photographed. She couldn’t let them see A-He.
After a moment’s thought, Lu Youqing spoke in a tight voice, “It’s too late tonight. Let’s leave tomorrow morning, okay? We’ll do the check-up first thing tomorrow and leave immediately.”
Yan He’s smile faltered for an instant before returning to normal. One of her hands instinctively gripped the bedsheet. Her tone was firmer than ever: “Another day? But I… I really want to leave.”
She couldn’t bear to stay a second longer.
Lu Youqing met her earnest gaze—a look she hadn’t seen in a long time. It felt as if something were blocking her throat, making it impossible to refuse. She took a deep breath, pursed her lips, and forced an impeccable smile: “Alright then. If we leave today, things will be a bit rushed, so we won’t have time to eat the cake right now.”
She stood up and opened the door. “I’ll go find the doctor for your check-up. We’ll eat the cake after that, okay?” Then she hurried out of the ward, leaving Yan He alone in the quiet room.
Yan He sat obediently, but the room felt as if it were shrinking. She found it hard to breathe, so she stood up and pushed the door open. Facing the two confused bodyguards, she said, “I’m not leaving this floor. I’m just going for a walk. Follow me if you want.”
She began to walk slowly down the hallway. The two bodyguards exchanged a glance, and eventually, the female guard followed, staying five meters behind her to ensure her safety.
Yan He didn’t know why she had come out, but she absolutely didn’t want to be alone in that room anymore. It felt as if there were an invisible ghost there, scrutinizing her deepest fears. She truly didn’t want to go back.
After a thought, she asked the guard where Lu Youqing had gone. The guard shook her head silently and continued to follow her like a shadow.
Yan He knew she wouldn’t get an answer from her, so she decided to ask at the nurse’s station. On the way, she passed a few family members chatting and happened to overhear their conversation.
“What happened outside this afternoon? Why was it so chaotic?”
“Apparently there’s a celebrity hospitalized here. The reporters rushed over for an interview and surrounded the person, wouldn’t let them leave.”
Yan He’s footsteps came to an abrupt halt. Her heart began to race.
