After Losing My Memory, I Was Targeted by the Obsessive Movie Queen [gl] - Chapter 16
Celebrity, hospitalized, surrounded?
The hairs on the back of Yan He’s neck stood up. She turned around and hurriedly walked over to the two chatting family members.
“Excuse me, could you tell me a bit more? When did this happen, and which celebrity?”
The two were startled by this person in a hospital gown, who walked with a limp and appeared so agitated. They quickly muttered, “Just this afternoon, the reporters are still outside right now,” before pulling each other away and making a quick escape.
Yan He watched their retreating backs and furrowed her brows deeply. Recalling the paparazzi she saw yesterday afternoon, Lu Youqing’s delay today, and the chaotic noise she had heard when the elevator opened, all the pieces of the puzzle suddenly fell into place.
Yan He turned around and asked the bodyguard behind her anxiously, “What happened to Lu Youqing this afternoon?”
The bodyguard froze and shook her head. “I don’t know. My mission is to protect you, Miss Yan. But some things did indeed happen this afternoon.”
Yan He stared at her. “What things?”
The bodyguard went silent again.
Helpless, Yan He walked to the nurse’s station to ask where Lu Youqing had gone. After getting the exact location, Yan He followed the route, her mind racing with imagery.
Lu Youqing must have been delayed this afternoon because of those people.
The door to the consultation room was not closed. She saw Lu Youqing sitting on a chair with her head down, occupied with something. Yan He felt a pang of heartache and was about to call out to her when she heard another voice inside the room.
“The wound on your hand is quite deep. Why didn’t you come to get it bandaged sooner? Aren’t you afraid of the infection getting worse?”
Yan He’s movements froze. The words she was about to say were forced back down. She instinctively retreated to a spot where the two couldn’t see her, her eyes fixed on Lu Youqing. She saw the wound on Lu Youqing’s left hand, which was hanging by her side.
Lu Youqing gave a bitter smile, and her voice traveled across the distance into Yan He’s ears.
“It shouldn’t be that serious.” As she spoke, the doctor was using alcohol to disinfect the wound. The moment the alcohol touched the cut, Lu Youqing couldn’t help but let out a soft “hiss” and furrowed her brows.
The corners of Yan He’s eyes turned red. It felt as if the alcohol touching Lu Youqing’s wound was also falling on her, bringing a dull, aching pain. She couldn’t bear to keep watching and didn’t even know how to face Lu Youqing now.
Yan He turned and left, her pace gradually quickening until she was almost stumbling as she ran back into her ward.
Gasping for air, she gritted her teeth to keep her emotions from overflowing, but her heart still ached.
She should have realized it. The people she saw yesterday must have discovered her and Lu Youqing, which was why so many people surrounded Lu Youqing today, causing her to get hurt.
Yet Yan He hadn’t considered this at all. She had been stubbornly insisting on leaving, completely unaware of what Lu Youqing was going through.
Even when she demanded to leave today, Lu Youqing had gently agreed to her request, completely disregarding her own well-being.
Waves of self-reproach swept through Yan He’s heart. Her mind was in a mess; the emotional upheavals of the day made her head throb. She could only lean against the bed and helplessly rub her temples.
The phone beside her suddenly “dinged.” Yan He looked down; it was a message from Lin Le.
Lin Le: 【Miss Yan, is CEO Lu at the hospital now?】
Yan He: 【She’s at the hospital. Thank you for today.】
Lin Le: 【It’s no trouble at all, it’s my job. I just saw a video online; it probably explains why CEO Lu was late today.】
A video was sent over immediately after.
Yan He saw the thumbnail was the hospital background. Realizing it was about this afternoon, her actions were faster than her thoughts as she clicked in.
Although she already knew the specifics of what Lu Youqing had encountered, seeing the actual footage made her heart tremble uncontrollably.
In the video, a solitary Lu Youqing was surrounded by a swarm of people holding microphones, pelting her with offensive questions. Lu Youqing remained silent, squeezed into the middle of the crowd. She was clutching a cake box tightly to her chest. In the jostling, her slender frame was pushed around by the crowd, unable to move, and the cake box was bumped.
Yan He clenched her fists, staring intently at the screen. This was the cake Lu Youqing had personally made this afternoon to celebrate her discharge—a cake Lu Youqing had poured her heart and soul into, only for it to be ruined by them.
The video ended as Lu Youqing reached the hospital entrance, but Yan He stared at the black screen for a long, long time. Finally, she heard the turn of the doorknob. Realizing Lu Youqing was back, she hurriedly composed herself and sat on the bed, looking the part of an obedient girlfriend.
Lu Youqing pushed the door open. Seeing Yan He sitting on the bed looking at her, her frustrated heart suddenly felt light.
“The doctor will be here soon. A-He, get ready for the check-up.”
She planned to use the time while Yan He was being examined to charge her phone and make arrangements for their departure. This afternoon, her desire to see Yan He had outweighed everything else; she had figured she’d just charge the phone at the hospital and had carelessly shoved it in her pocket. If she had charged it sooner, perhaps none of this would have happened.
Lu Youqing let out a soft sigh.
Yan He looked up at her, her gaze drifting toward Lu Youqing’s bandaged hand.
Lu Youqing instinctively pulled her hand back, looking uncharacteristically flustered.
“You’re hurt,” Yan He said. The uncontrollable ache in her heart finally spilled over. Her chestnut eyes filled with mist, and her voice trembled slightly. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lu Youqing’s breath hitched. Forgetting her attempt to hide her left hand, she hurried over to comfort her. “I only just noticed it myself and went to get it bandaged.”
But for the first time, the “Movie Queen’s” clumsy acting failed to deceive Yan He. Yan He looked at her stubbornly. “You’re lying.”
She reached out and pulled Lu Youqing toward her, letting the woman lean against her shoulder. Her voice was thick with emotion. “Let’s leave tomorrow instead. I don’t want to go so early anymore.”
Being held so tightly, Lu Youqing’s heart surged, and she couldn’t help but let her lips curve upward, though her face maintained its usual calm and vulnerability. “It’s fine. It’s just a small injury; it won’t stop us from going home.”
Yan He shook her head, her hair lightly brushing their necks. “Don’t leave today. After the check-up, let’s stay one more night and leave tomorrow morning.”
Lu Youqing was puzzled as to why she had made a decision so contrary to her earlier stance. What had Yan He experienced in the ten-odd minutes she was gone? Although her mood was somewhat somber, being held so tightly by Yan He felt like a blessing in disguise. Stroking Yan He’s back, she complied.
“Okay.”
It seemed that no matter what Yan He said, Lu Youqing would never argue. Leaving or staying, as long as it was Yan He’s word, she followed it.
Yan He felt even worse. She hugged Lu Youqing tightly and murmured, “I’m sorry. You’re so tired, yet I knew nothing.”
Lu Youqing concluded that Yan He must have found out something. A flash of panic—the fear of losing control—rose in her heart. She released Yan He, her voice carrying a hint of stiffness.
“Did you find out something?”
Sensing the tone, Yan He looked up and gave a bitter smile. “I went out to find you just now and heard people talking. They said reporters were surrounding a celebrity downstairs, so I knew it was you. I’m sorry. You’re already so tired because of those people, yet I still wanted to leave early. Those people must still be down there waiting for us.”
Having no memory, Yan He didn’t know how to be indirect. She spoke her mind completely, not knowing how to hold back. As Lu Youqing listened, the unease in her heart suddenly vanished.
She thought…
She was overthinking.
Lu Youqing held her, stroking her back. The relief following the worry made her want to tease her fiancée. She leaned against Yan He’s shoulder, putting her full weight on her. When she spoke, her voice was full of weakness. “I am indeed a little bit tired. What should I do?”
Yan He took a deep breath, loosened her embrace, and looked at her. “Do you want to rest?” As she spoke, she was already reaching to pull back the blanket with one hand.
Lu Youqing only shook her head. She curved her lips and half-closed her eyes in thought. Under Yan He’s expectant gaze, she spoke slowly. “How about… A-He gives me a kiss?”
Yan He froze on the spot, only coming to her senses at Lu Youqing’s soft chuckle. “K-kiss you?”
“Mm.” Lu Youqing looked at her, her voice carrying an unintentional lure. “Whenever I was tired from work before, A-He would comfort me like this. Although it might be a bit too fast to say this now, I still hope A-He can be more intimate with me and accept me more.”
She raised her hand to cup Yan He’s face, her pleading eyes trembling as she looked at her. The distance between them vanished, and they could feel each other’s warmth in their breath.
“For the old A-He, this was just a normal, small thing. Can A-He comfort me like this? Just once.” Lu Youqing couldn’t help but give a bitter smile, her tone laced with dejection.
Yan He looked at her with trembling eyelashes. The gentle, beautiful, yet tragic smile on Lu Youqing’s face was too dazzling. Her heart pounded like a drum, and her mind raced back and forth.
It’s just a kiss. For the previous her and Lu Youqing, this surely meant nothing, especially since they were engaged. After leaving the hospital, she would truly be Lu Youqing’s fiancée; it was better to adapt to this now. Moreover, she could sense that Lu Youqing was very hurt by that instinctive push from before, even if she didn’t say it. And then there was the video she just saw…
“Okay,” Yan He responded. Her answer was so quick that even Lu Youqing couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.
With a smile on her lips, Lu Youqing closed her eyes and waited for Yan He’s kiss. The room fell into silence again. The difference this time was that Lu Youqing could hear the shallow breathing of the person beside her, her heart racing wildly in contrast to her outward calm.
In truth, Lu Youqing still harbored a grudge about Yan He pushing her away. No matter how gentle and considerate she acted, the panic in her heart followed her like a shadow. She desperately wanted Yan He to prove that she cared. A kiss, a tight hug—she didn’t need much, just a simple touch could soothe her anxious heart.
If it were before, she might not have begged Yan He to kiss her like this, but her A-He had amnesia; she wanted to start over.
The “kiss” Lu Youqing initially spoke of didn’t carry any romantic undertone; she simply wanted Yan He to kiss her on the cheek. After all, Yan He had only just lost her memory; Lu Youqing was a “familiar stranger” to her. Not pushing her away and agreeing to her was already progress.
The faint scent of disinfectant drifted toward her. Lu Youqing’s heart suddenly leaped. This fluttering of her heart made her feel as if she had returned to years ago. Before she could react, a soft touch landed on her lips.
