After Losing My Memory, I Was Targeted by the Obsessive Movie Queen [gl] - Chapter 17
A soft, sweet kiss. In an instant, a surging tide of emotion crashed over Lu Youqing. She heard the wild thumping of her own heart and a roar like trembling mountains; the blood in her entire body reached a boiling point.
She couldn’t help but open her eyes. Through her fluttering lashes, she saw Yan He’s face magnified before her—a Yan He who was innocent, naive, and completely clueless about how to kiss.
She was her Yan He.
Lu Youqing’s eyes darkened as a thought crossed her mind. She hadn’t expected Yan He to kiss her on the lips. Even though it was just a stationary press without any movement, it was enough to make her heart collapse into ruins.
Her lowered hand clenched tightly; Lu Youqing gave no thought to her freshly bandaged wound. She stared deeply at the person before her and raised a hand to cradle the back of Yan He’s head, wanting to deepen the kiss.
Knock—knock. A knock sounded at the door. In an instant, the softness was withdrawn, fading away along with the faint scent of disinfectant.
Yan He raised a hand to wipe her lips. There was no shyness in her gaze as she looked toward the window, giving Lu Youqing a confused look.
Lu Youqing snapped back to reality, realizing that the doctor she had called for had arrived. When she spoke, her voice was husky in a way she didn’t even realize.
“It should be the doctor for the check-up. I’ll get the door.”
She turned her back to Yan He, pursing her lips as if trying to etch that sweet sensation into her soul, right alongside her racing heartbeat.
Once again, because of Yan He, she realized she was truly alive.
Yan He watched Lu Youqing’s back, restraining her gasps. She opened her tightly clenched palm; her entire body couldn’t stop trembling.
She clutched her chest, her pupils quivering. While Lu Youqing talked with the doctor, she quickly steadied her emotions, not wanting either of them to see anything unusual.
During that kiss, she had tried her utmost to suppress the urge to push the person in front of her away. Fortunately, Lu Youqing hadn’t noticed anything.
Even Yan He herself didn’t know why she had such a massive emotional reaction when faced with Lu Youqing’s proximity. Whether this instinctive resistance was a defense mechanism born from amnesia or something else, she didn’t know.
Yan He let out a long breath, pushing these thoughts to the back of her mind for now. She stood up and followed the doctor’s call out of the ward.
Yan He followed the doctor through various examinations. Throughout the process, Lu Youqing stayed right by her side, gently comforting her whenever Yan He sought security in her fear.
After the check-up, the doctor stated that Yan He’s physical condition was good and she could be discharged. She then marveled at the couple’s relationship.
“Miss Lu, Miss Yan, you truly are a beautiful couple,” she couldn’t help but praise.
Yan He sat on the chair, staring straight at the medical record beside her, but the doctor’s words echoed in her mind. Her ears, hidden beneath her hair, flushed crimson.
Lu Youqing, not at all shy, thanked her with a smile. She then took Yan He’s hand and spoke softly as Yan He looked up.
“Let’s go. Time to rest.”
The light above them illuminated Lu Youqing as she looked down with a smile; even the strands of her hair seemed to speak of a lingering tenderness.
Yan He’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t help but curve her lips, nodding under Lu Youqing’s equally focused gaze.
As they walked away hand-in-hand, Yan He could still hear the doctor back in the office muttering, “Tsk tsk, they’re killing the single dogs, killing the single dogs.” The courage she had just gathered vanished in an instant, and her entire neck turned pink.
She hadn’t noticed it before, but now, feeling their hands interlaced, even her cheeks grew hot. Considering she had proactively kissed Lu Youqing on the lips not long ago, feeling awkward just holding hands made Yan He marvel at what strange creatures humans are.
The stretch of hallway wasn’t long, but Yan He felt as if they had been walking for ages. She frowned slightly and looked at Lu Youqing, only to see her smiling at the path ahead, as if she had thought of something very interesting.
Sensing Yan He’s gaze, Lu Youqing turned to her, her smile replaced by confusion. “What is it?”
Infected by her smile, Yan He shook her head and looked away. She felt their interlaced hands move suddenly; Lu Youqing’s fingers slid into the gaps of her own, locking them in a ten-finger clasp with a firmness that allowed no refusal.
Yan He’s breath hitched. She let go of Lu Youqing’s hand to push open the ward door, changing the subject: “Tomorrow we can finally leave this place.”
Lu Youqing followed her into the room. She looked down at the hand that had just been holding Yan He’s; the moment she had wanted to grip tighter, Yan He had skillfully slipped away. Lu Youqing’s eyes darkened.
Yan He urged Lu Youqing to rest quickly so they could leave first thing in the morning.
“By the way, will those people still be waiting there tomorrow?” Yan He was worried Lu Youqing might get surrounded again.
Lu Youqing took off her jacket and placed it on the chair. After a moment of thought, she said, “Probably not. Sister Xue will take action. Even if they are still there tomorrow, we can leave from another exit. Today was just an accident.”
She didn’t elaborate on what the “accident” was. It seemed that figuring out how to cut the cake without ruining the writing was more important to her than the accident she mentioned.
Though she didn’t say it, Yan He knew exactly what she was glossing over. It felt like something was stuck in her throat; Yan He didn’t know how to speak—worry, lingering fear, relief, guilt… she likely felt them all.
Her lowered left hand curled. Yan He sank back into a dejected mood until Lu Youqing’s gentle voice sounded from above.
“Alright, A-He, come eat some cake.”
Lu Youqing handed a perfectly cut slice to Yan He. Yan He took it, her eyes falling on the word “Happy” on the cake. She looked up at Lu Youqing and saw that she had already cut a piece for herself.
She stole a glance; Lu Youqing’s slice had the word “Yan He” on it.
“What is it, A-He? Do you not like the taste?” Seeing Yan He just staring at the cake without eating, Lu Youqing worried the flavor wasn’t right. Even though she made Yan He’s favorite, perhaps her tastes had changed after the amnesia. What if the current A-He didn’t like it anymore?
Lu Youqing felt a bit troubled; she should have asked A-He in advance.
Seeing Lu Youqing overthinking, Yan He quickly spoke: “No, I love this flavor. I was just thinking…”
She paused, then said, “Lu Youqing, thank you.” She picked up her fork and took a bite of the cake marked “Happy.” The sweet cream melted, sending a sweetness straight to her heart.
Since her amnesia, she had been defensive about everything, always wary of Lu Youqing’s kindness and even instinctively resistant. But whether she avoided her or resisted her, Lu Youqing was always like flowing water, tenderly enveloping her without a care for her behavior.
The more she thought this way, the more moved and guilty Yan He felt.
Yan He’s heart was an emotional mess, and the cake in front of her seemed to take on a different weight. In her excitement, she didn’t notice Lu Youqing’s face suddenly darken after she mentioned “thank you.”
Lu Youqing finished her cake without a change in expression. She set down the paper plate and looked at Yan He, her mind filled with images of Yan He’s previous coldness toward her.
“A-He, don’t say thank you to me.”
Yan He gave a questioning “Hm?” and looked up, still chewing. A bit of cream was stuck to the corner of her lip.
Lu Youqing leaned over to wipe it away with her hand and repeated herself. “I am your fiancée. I love A-He. If you say thank you to me, I’ll be very sad.” The corners of her eyes drooped, and her trembling lashes made her look heartbroken.
Yan He instinctively started to apologize, then realized Lu Youqing didn’t like apologies either, so she shut her mouth. In a flustered state, she reached out and hugged Lu Youqing.
“I understand. I’ll work hard to change that.”
Being held by her, Lu Youqing’s surging emotions finally ebbed. “I believe in A-He.”
She pressed against Yan He’s chest, feeling the vigorous beat of her heart to steady her own consciousness.
“In the future, don’t say those things anymore,” she said, seizing the opportunity to state her intent.
“Okay.”
“Don’t say sorry, either.”
“Okay.”
“And you can’t call me by my full name. You have to call me ‘Wife’.”
