- Chapter 111 - If Line 3: Eighteen Years Old
An Yu ran out of the hospital room and stood in the corridor for a long time, trying to calm herself down until the flush on her face faded. Her mind was still a little muddled, but she could roughly sort out her thoughts.
She sat down on a chair outside the ward, propping her chin in her hand as she pondered.
The Lin father and son had done so many terrible things-once evidence was found, they would surely be locked up. The real question was how to approach Zhao Sunan. An Yu didn’t even know what the woman looked like.
For the second time in her eighteen years of life, An Yu felt utterly helpless. How could she possibly find her?
“An Yu, you’re here to see Xiao Lin so early?” A familiar voice suddenly sounded beside her. An Yu turned and saw the deputy director standing not far away, greeting her.
Looking at her, An Yu suddenly remembered something. Lin Duxi had mentioned that Lin Yongfeng and his son had once caused trouble at the orphanage, and Zhao Sunan had been there too-along with the deputy director.
“Auntie Deputy Director, do you know Zhao Sunan?” An Yu ventured.
The deputy director froze for a moment at the question, then seemed to understand and sighed. “Xiao Lin told you, didn’t she? Zhao Sunan used to be a volunteer at our orphanage. After her husband came and made a scene, she stopped coming.”
“Where is she now?”
“She’s probably at home. With her husband’s temper, she likely can’t even leave the house now.” The deputy director sighed again, her eyes filled with pity as she glanced toward the ward. “You’ve already visited Xiao Lin, right? I’ll go in now.”
An Yu nodded, stood up to bid her farewell, and then left for her parents’ ward. On the way, she ran into the butler, Wen Zhenhe, who was also heading there.
“Young Miss, your parents are awake. Would you like to go in and see them?” he asked.
An Yu quickened her steps and peered through the window. An Huaili and Yu Yingzhen were sitting on the hospital bed, looking much better than before.
She shook her head. “Let them rest properly.” Then she turned to the butler and pulled him aside to a quieter part of the hallway.
“Uncle Butler, can you help me with something?” An Yu whispered.
“Young Miss, there’s no need to be so formal with me. Just tell me what you need.”
So An Yu briefly explained some of the things Lin Duxi had gone through-though she didn’t mention that she had seen her in the hospital.
“Zhao Sunan is Lin Yongfeng’s wife, and she’s been enduring his domestic abuse for a long time. She might be able to provide us with some leads,” An Yu said.
The butler frowned slightly. “Young Miss, you don’t need to worry about this. They’ve committed so many crimes-once we investigate and gather evidence, they won’t be able to keep acting so arrogantly. But… should we inform your parents about this?”
An Yu turned to look through the window again at her parents. After a long pause, she shook her head. “No need. They need rest right now. Knowing this would only add to their worries. Let’s contact Zhao Sunan first and find the evidence.”
The butler nodded and left.
An Yu watched her resting parents, but her brows unconsciously furrowed. Her heart felt like it had sunk into a bottomless lake-heavy and suffocating.
After the heartache and sorrow of seeing Lin Duxi, she became increasingly aware of just how difficult their love was. Her parents’ opposition, the interference of relatives, and Lin Duxi’s near-death experience-she had no choice but to seriously consider what to do next.
Though she had told Lin Duxi in the ward that she was still angry, the moment she saw her in the hospital, all that resentment had dissipated at the sight of her weakness.
She could never ignore Lin Duxi’s existence. She knew she still loved her, and that love hadn’t faded even a little over these past few days. If anything, it had only grown, threatening to overflow from the depths of her heart.
An Yu let out a deep sigh.
From then on, whenever An Yu stayed at the hospital, she deliberately prepared two portions of food-one she ate in front of her parents, and the other she delivered to Lin Duxi after leaving their ward.
Every time Lin Duxi saw her, her eyes would soften with a smile. Her physical condition also gradually improved with each day of rest.
The speed at which the butler obtained information far exceeded An Yu and Lin Duxi’s expectations. The neighbors next to Lin Yongfeng’s family had long been fed up with the father and son’s misdeeds. The moment someone came asking questions, they spilled everything without hesitation.
The butler’s people managed to briefly contact Zhao Sunan while Lin Yongfeng was out buying alcohol, obtaining a great deal of evidence. Now, Lin Yongfeng was already under police control.
So, during another session of feeding Lin Duxi porridge, An Yu told her the news.
Lin Duxi stiffened for a moment, her gaze fixed on An Yu as if unable to process the information. Then, her hands trembling slightly, she reached out and grasped An Yu’s wrist.
An Yu set the bowl aside, tucking a loose strand of hair behind Lin Duxi’s ear. Lin Duxi leaned forward and hugged her, burying her face in the crook of An Yu’s neck as she murmured,
“That’s… such a relief.”
The dark clouds lingering in her heart were dispelled, and Lin Duxi felt the tension in her chest suddenly loosen, leaving her momentarily dazed.
An Yu was also happy, but she had something more important to discuss with Lin Duxi. The deadline for college applications for the national college entrance exam was approaching, and Lin Duxi had never brought it up-either she had forgotten or there was something else she couldn’t talk about.
Now that An Yu wouldn’t be going abroad, she naturally wanted to attend a university close to the one Lin Duxi chose.
“Which school did you apply to after the results came out?” An Yu asked.
Lin Duxi lowered her gaze to the blanket, and An Yu immediately sensed something amiss.
“Don’t tell me you forgot to apply?” An Yu asked, shocked.
Only then did Lin Duxi raise her eyes to meet An Yu’s gaze. Her clear eyes held nothing but sincerity. “The same university as before. I never changed it.”
She had considered whether to alter her choice-after all, the Lin father and son knew which school she planned to attend and might track her down to demand money again. But then she remembered her promise to An Yu, remembered the earnest look in An Yu’s eyes that day in the hospital, and her anxious heart steadied.
For some reason, An Yu’s unease also settled. Yet now she grew awkward-perhaps because of the years she and Lin Duxi had spent together, their relationship had reverted to how it used to be. But neither of them had brought up what happened that day.
Thinking of this, she feigned hesitation. “I still don’t know which school to apply to. I overperformed on the exam this time, so I’m not sure what to do.”
“It’s driving me crazy,” An Yu muttered, fidgeting with her fingers while stealing glances at Lin Duxi from the corner of her eye.
Lin Duxi understood exactly what she meant and didn’t beat around the bush.
“The major you like at that school is within your reach.”
An Yu raised an eyebrow. “Oh? I don’t remember saying I liked that school.”
Lin Duxi reached out and took her hand, intertwining their fingers. An Yu put up a token resistance before letting it be.
“I remember everything A-Yu has ever said. Of course, there’s some selfishness in this, too,” Lin Duxi admitted, tightening her grip with a bitter smile.
“I know A-Yu hasn’t forgiven me yet. It’s only right-I hurt you. But I want to stay by your side. I’ll do anything you ask, as long as I don’t have to leave you again.”
Her voice was soft, but every word struck An Yu’s heart, leaving a deep imprint.
An Yu’s emotions churned. Her voice was hoarse as she trembled and asked, “What if I never told you which school I applied to? Or if I pretended to choose the same university as you but actually picked a different one? What would you do?”
Lin Duxi stiffened for a moment before lowering her eyes with a faint smile, all her hidden sorrow and bitterness surging toward An Yu.
“Then I’d just go find A-Yu.”
Her tone was light, the tail end of her sentence lilting slightly, as if they were having an ordinary conversation between friends. But her words carried an unshakable resolve.
An Yu’s heart felt like it had been struck hard. She sensed that Lin Duxi wasn’t just humoring her-she truly meant it. And what she would do might be even more extreme than what she was saying.
“What if you couldn’t find me?” An Yu pressed, unable to let it go.
Lin Duxi lifted her head, her dark eyes meeting An Yu’s gaze directly. The emotions in them were deep and sorrowful. With a gentle curve of her lips, she replied warmly,
“How could I not find you? I’d always find you eventually.”
An Yu shuddered. Something wild and overwhelming took root in her heart, spreading uncontrollably. She had no idea how to respond-her heart pounded like thunder, and she could only stare at Lin Duxi in a daze.
Lin Duxi’s gaze remained tender, as if it had never changed. By nature, she carried an air of cool detachment, but in front of An Yu, that aloofness vanished, replaced only by a softness like water-one An Yu could never refuse.
And so, under the weight of that gentle look, An Yu nodded blankly, hardly aware of what she was agreeing to.
“Okay.”
Lin Duxi’s heart skipped. “Okay to what? What did you say, A-Yu?”
An Yu jolted back to reality, realizing she had unwittingly succumbed to Lin Duxi’s charm. Flustered, she turned away, yanking her hand back.
“You heard wrong. I didn’t say anything,” she muttered hastily.
Lin Duxi, seeing her like this, knew she was being tsundere again and didn’t press further. An Yu’s momentary concession was enough to satisfy her.
“Alright, I must have misheard,” Lin Duxi conceded obediently.
An Yu immediately regretted her reaction. She looked back at Lin Duxi’s clear eyes, which reflected only her-as if Lin Duxi herself belonged to An Yu alone.
A storm of emotions raged inside An Yu. The words she had been turning over in her throat shifted, transforming into something else entirely.
“After you recover and leave the hospital, we shouldn’t contact each other too much.”
Lin Duxi froze, her movements locking in place. A mist rapidly gathered in the depths of her eyes. The heart that had just begun to settle was suddenly seized again, the pain so sharp she could barely maintain her composure.
But An Yu quickly finished her thought.
“What I mean is-my parents don’t like me dating. So let’s talk about this after the semester starts.” Seeing Lin Duxi’s reaction, An Yu hurried to explain, watching her with concern.
Only then did Lin Duxi recall the conversation she’d had with An Yu’s parents. The tension in her body dissolved all at once, and she couldn’t help but laugh at herself.
An Yu’s words were a clear declaration of her choice. Both of them understood perfectly.
“Alright. Whatever A-Yu says,” Lin Duxi replied with a soft smile, free of melancholy. Now relaxed and unrestrained, her smile was filled with nothing but love for the person before her.
