- Chapter 112 - If Line 4: Eighteen Years Old
An Yu felt her cheeks burn under the scalding, undisguised affection in those eyes. She hurriedly turned her head away, avoiding Lin Duxi’s gaze-yet the delicate red tips of her ears, peeking through her long hair, betrayed her emotions completely.
“Don’t agree to me so thoughtlessly. This is a serious matter,” An Yu stammered, struggling to keep the atmosphere between them from growing any more intimate.
When Lin Duxi caught sight of those blushing ears, her heart softened even further. “I’m not being thoughtless,” she said earnestly.
An Yu didn’t know how to respond. How could every word this person spoke sound like sweet nothings? That wasn’t fair!
If she couldn’t handle it, couldn’t she at least escape?
She turned back to Lin Duxi, intending to scold her for speaking so tenderly-but the moment she met those clear, luminous eyes, bright with quiet warmth, her breath hitched, her thoughts scattering.
Flustered, she stood up, clasping her hands behind her back. The long speech she had prepared vanished from her mind, leaving only a single stammered phrase: “I-I get it. See you when school starts!”
With that, An Yu fled the hospital room in a rush, leaving behind only the lingering warmth of her presence.
Lin Duxi lowered her gaze to her palm, where the fading heat seemed to slowly dissipate. She curled her fingers, clutching at the last remnants of warmth, a faint smile in her eyes.
Just as An Yu had expected, when she told her parents about her decision, they raised no objections. Soon enough, she received the acceptance letter from the university.
On the first day of the semester, An Yu’s parents drove her to campus. She obediently chatted with them the whole way-but the moment they left, the excitement on her face gradually dimmed.
After unpacking her things, An Yu wandered aimlessly around the school, her phone screen frozen on the page for adding Lin Duxi as a friend.
Lin Duxi’s university was right next to hers. Her semester had started a few days earlier-something An Yu had only learned after browsing the other school’s website.
Over the past two months, the two of them had barely spoken, let alone seen each other. To say she didn’t miss her would be a lie.
An Yu couldn’t help but pause by the roadside, pressing a hand to her forehead. The last time they’d spoken in the hospital room, she had fled in defeat. She had no idea how to break the ice now, especially when she was still technically mad at Lin Duxi.
She took a deep breath and exited the screen.
If Lin Duxi didn’t reach out by tonight, then she would-
She would message her first.
Having settled on a plan, An Yu returned to her dorm to rest, where she ran into her new roommates. After introductions and some lively conversation, she no longer felt like napping, so she decided to join them for dinner-and maybe take a peek at Lin Duxi’s campus along the way.
Dinnertime meant the campus was far busier than it had been that morning. As she walked with her roommates, An Yu’s thoughts drifted to what Lin Duxi might be doing right now-so much so that she barely noticed when they reached the school gates.
“Wow, that girl over there is gorgeous!” one of her roommates suddenly exclaimed.
“She really is! She’s not from our school, is she?” another sighed.
“Why not?”
“She’s wearing a military training uniform. Our school just started-there’s no way we’d have those yet. She must be from the university next door, here to meet someone.”
An Yu’s heart skipped. Instinctively, she lifted her gaze, following her roommates’ line of sight-
Lin Duxi stood a short distance away, scanning the area until, as if sensing her presence, she turned. Their eyes met without warning.
The possibility in An Yu’s heart solidified into reality. The person she had longed for day and night was right there, just a few steps away. In an instant, those clear, bright eyes bloomed with a smile-soft and warm, scattering straight into An Yu’s heart.
Lin Duxi wore her military training uniform, her hair tied back in a ponytail tucked under a cap, stray strands tucked behind her ears to reveal flawless cheeks. The look was crisp, striking-cool and composed, yet her gaze held endless tenderness.
Spotting An Yu, Lin Duxi walked toward her.
“Ah Yu,” she said, stopping in front of her with a gentle smile.
“Happy first day of school.”
After so long apart, Lin Duxi had grown even more beautiful-yet that warmth was still reserved for her alone. An Yu couldn’t help but think so, even as she turned her head with feigned indifference.
“Who congratulates someone on starting school ?”
Lin Duxi paused, then burst into laughter. She reached out, lightly tugging at An Yu’s sleeve. “You’re right, my mistake. So-how about we get dinner together?”
An Yu glanced at her roommates, who took the hint with admirable grace, waving as they excused themselves. “We’ll go ahead and eat first.”
An Yu: “…” She hadn’t even said anything yet.
After her roommate left, only the two of them remained. An Yu glanced at the camouflage military training uniform Lin Duxi hadn’t yet changed out of, her delicate brows furrowing slightly.
“You’re still in the middle of training-do you have enough time to eat?”
Hearing this, Lin Duxi took An Yu’s hand and pulled her toward the door. “Of course not, so we’d better hurry.”
An Yu’s hand grew warm in hers, but she couldn’t bring herself to let go. It had been so long since she’d last seen Lin Duxi, and today’s encounter had been a complete surprise. Now that the initial shock had faded, all that remained was an overwhelming joy.
“Why didn’t you message me before coming? Did you just wait here the whole time?” she asked.
Lin Duxi turned her head, her eyes smiling. “I meant to tell you, but I couldn’t reach you. So I thought I’d try my luck here-turns out today was my lucky day.”
An Yu checked her phone and, sure enough, there was a recent friend request from Lin Duxi. She said nothing, but her fingers quietly tapped “Accept.”
The two ate lunch at a small restaurant near the school. Lin Duxi’s training schedule was tight, and before they could exchange more than a few words, she had to leave.
Watching Lin Duxi walk away, An Yu stared at their chat interface on her phone, the surreal feeling finally dissipating.
She clutched her phone, her fingers unconsciously tracing Lin Duxi’s profile picture, her heart pounding uncontrollably.
I want to kiss her. So badly.
From the moment she saw Lin Duxi today, this thought had taken root in her mind, impossible to shake.
After that, Lin Duxi came to eat with An Yu every day. Though their time together was brief, she always wore a soft smile, her dark eyes tender and affectionate. Yet she never once brought up the idea of them getting back together.
Had she really forgotten?
An Yu frowned slightly, a storm of complicated emotions surging in her chest. She couldn’t help but sigh.
She had dropped hints-both obvious and subtle-about reconciling, but Lin Duxi never reacted. It left An Yu second-guessing everything, frustrating herself to no end.
On the last day of Lin Duxi’s military training, An Yu secretly went to her school to watch her performance.
For some reason, as she passed a flower shop, her steps slowed. Before she knew it, she was holding a bouquet of roses.
An Yu stared at the flowers, then carefully cradled them in her arms.
The field was lively, the blaring speakers nearly splitting the sky. But as the host’s enthusiastic announcements filled the air, An Yu paid no attention-her gaze was fixed on one striking figure in the formation. Watching her serious expression and precise movements, An Yu’s heart surged in sync with her.
It seemed Lin Duxi had always been able to pluck at her heartstrings so effortlessly. An Yu’s fingers tightened unconsciously around the rose stems as she watched, suddenly realizing something.
After the performance, Lin Duxi showered and headed out at noon. Seeing An Yu’s message on her phone, her heart tensed habitually, and she quickened her pace.
When she arrived at the meeting spot, her eyes swept the area before landing on An Yu sitting on a bench. A smile touched her eyes as she walked over.
The moment Lin Duxi approached, An Yu spotted her. Standing, she handed the bouquet to Lin Duxi as soon as she was near.
Lin Duxi froze, staring at the flowers in a daze, forgetting even to reach out.
An Yu pushed them forward slightly. “Your performance today was amazing.”
Her lashes fluttered as she spoke, her hazel eyes reflecting Lin Duxi’s image like a tranquil lake gently enveloping her.
Lin Duxi took the roses, her fingers brushing the stems. At that moment, her heartbeat seemed to shatter all barriers, pounding violently in her chest.
“A-Yu… you came to see me?” she murmured, stunned.
An Yu, seeing her expression, pulled her into a hug. “Is it strange for me to come watch my girlfriend’s performance?”
Girlfriend.
The word sent Lin Duxi’s heart racing. Her pupils trembled violently as she wrapped her arms tightly around An Yu’s waist, clinging as if she wanted to melt into her.
“W-What did you say?” Lin Duxi’s mind spun, afraid she’d misheard.
An Yu feigned innocence. “Nothing much. Let’s go eat-you’ve been busy all morning. You must be starving.”
Lin Duxi lifted her head from An Yu’s shoulder, her damp eyes burning with love, the intensity of her emotions shattering An Yu’s composure.
An Yu’s breath hitched before she pulled Lin Duxi close again, whispering in her ear, “I said, I’m taking my girlfriend out to eat.”
Her words, warm against Lin Duxi’s ear, sent emotions surging like a tidal wave. The deafening rhythm of her heart made her eyes burn red.
“A-Yu…” Her voice cracked, trembling with suppressed tears.
But An Yu simply took her hand, interlacing their fingers with the same firmness as before-never once letting go.
“Come on, let’s go. Our reservation is coming up.”
Lin Duxi swallowed her words. In the face of such certainty, words felt meaningless.
She squeezed An Yu’s hand, their fingers locked together.
“Okay.”
