After Rebirth, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessive - Chapter 84
Though she knew An Yu was teasing her, Lin Duxi still fell right into the trap, leaving her both annoyed and helpless.
An Yu looked at her puffed-up cheeks and couldn’t help but want to laugh. But she knew that if she dared to laugh in front of Lin Duxi right now, she’d undoubtedly be torn to pieces.
She forced the smile from her face, but the mirth in her eyes was unmistakably real, spilling over despite her efforts.
Lin Duxi narrowed her eyes. The ears hidden beneath her hair had long been dyed red by An Yu’s gaze, and she smiled faintly in return.
Suddenly, An Yu felt a tickling sensation at her waist. She shivered, trying to squirm away, only to be pulled by Lin Duxi as they both tumbled onto the soft bed.
“You’re cheating!” An Yu gasped between laughter under Lin Duxi’s relentless attack.
Having exacted her revenge, Lin Duxi stopped her fingers’ assault on An Yu’s waist and instead wrapped her arms around her.
The once lively room grew much quieter. An Yu’s mood settled along with the tightening of Lin Duxi’s embrace. Lin Duxi’s body was warmer than hers, so she turned over to face her.
Then, she saw the tenderness in Lin Duxi’s eyes. Her heart felt heavy, as if weighed down by something.
Lin Duxi pressed closer and suddenly spoke.
“I had a nightmare. In it, there was no A-Yu. I was so scared. I hated that dream.”
Her whisper brushed against An Yu’s ear, intimate as a lover’s murmur.
“It was just a nightmare. It won’t come true.” An Yu replied immediately, the reflexive response leaving her momentarily dazed.
Lin Duxi smiled but said nothing, only holding An Yu tighter.
The dim room was lit only by a small lamp. In the shadows untouched by light, something seemed to grow quietly, filling the air with an unspoken tension.
An Yu’s ears grew increasingly red, every spot Lin Duxi had touched burning as if on fire. Her throat felt dry.
Abruptly, she sat up. “I’ll bring the food upstairs.”
Lin Duxi’s eyes followed her with amusement until she reached the door, then darkened like a still, frigid lake.
Lin Duxi couldn’t ignore An Yu’s response-it had been too quick, almost as if she was deliberately avoiding the topic.
Fragmented memories surged in her mind, summoning recollections that shouldn’t exist, churning until her head throbbed with pain. She clutched the pillow An Yu had just been lying on, trying to ease the discomfort.
Something was blocking her from delving deeper. The more she tried to think, the sharper the pain grew, until she was simply enduring it.
The scenes flashing before her were indeed from her own experiences-her receiving awards, conversing with others, acting, lost in thought, undergoing treatment. In these images, she was even more composed, more radiantly beautiful.
But there was no An Yu.
Not a single frame, not a single moment-An Yu was completely absent from her life, as though she had vanished from the world.
Vanished.
The despair from her dreams followed Lin Duxi into wakefulness, creeping from her feet until it engulfed her entire body. Suddenly, she remembered the scenes from her recent nightmares-the moments of An Yu leaving her, the images she had questioned yet resisted seeing.
She had always thought they were just prophetic dreams. But what if… they were memories of what she had already lived through?
An Yu and Lin Duxi had stayed in the room for quite a while. When An Yu went downstairs, she found the dining table empty.
Fortunately, there was still some congee left in the kitchen.
An Yu reheated the congee. As she waited, she replayed the scenes she had witnessed during the punishment mode.
She had briefly controlled her limbs to fend off the black-clad figure, who had adapted to her movements by switching to kicks. Though she hadn’t managed to lift the figure’s mask, she had gained something even more valuable.
The punishment mode wasn’t just about forcing her to relive the agony of her death helplessly-it was about sending her back to that moment to experience it anew.
She couldn’t prevent her death, but she could uncover the truth behind it and find the real culprit. The thought excited An Yu so much she almost wanted to provoke the system again.
The sound of the congee finishing snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked at the porridge, and a flash of white skirt flickered through her mind, finally reminding her of what she had forgotten.
The woman in the white dress-she was the variable in her punishment mode. Why had she been there? What did she have to do with An Yu’s death?
She was the third party present, the first witness An Yu had seen at the scene of her death.
Who was she?
An Yu instinctively glanced upstairs, though her heart rejected the suspicion forming in her mind.
By the time An Yu had gathered her thoughts and carried the congee upstairs, over ten minutes had passed. She hoped Lin Duxi hadn’t fallen asleep yet-going a whole day without eating would be unbearable.
Holding the bowl in both hands made it hard to turn the doorknob, so An Yu used her elbow to press it down instead.
The door swung open slowly, and An Yu looked up to see Lin Duxi standing right there, as though she had been waiting.
The room was still dim, but Lin Duxi stood in the light from the hallway, her features outlined with an ethereal beauty.
Dazzled, An Yu watched as Lin Duxi took the bowl from her with a smile, set it on the table, and then simply stared at her without taking a sip.
Though only a little over ten minutes had passed, Lin Duxi seemed even more stunning in her eyes. She was still wearing the same clothes, the collar still slightly askew.
In the blink of an eye, An Yu felt the world spin around her. The next moment she regained her senses, she was already sitting by the bed, with Lin Duxi perched on her lap, gazing at her with watery eyes.
“I almost forgot about the mischief you just pulled,” Lin Duxi chided, one hand gently caressing An Yu’s cheek while the other wandered restlessly.
“What mischief…?” The second half of her sentence was swallowed before it could escape.
Lin Duxi teased her on purpose, deliberately tangling with her, withdrawing just as An Yu tried to follow, leaving An Yu frowning in dissatisfaction.
With a faint smile, Lin Duxi lightly patted her face, then cupped it, growing serious.
No one knew who succumbed first, but the warmth hidden in their hearts now spilled over unrestrained. Lin Duxi couldn’t help but let out a soft whimper.
Suddenly, a sharp, needle-like pain pierced An Yu’s mind, snapping her scattered thoughts back into focus. Unconsciously, she broke the kiss, gasping for breath.
Lin Duxi opened her eyes to look at her, her dazed gaze full of confusion before she lowered her head to press light kisses against An Yu’s neck.
An Yu’s hand brushed against something hard, and only then did she realize she had been stroking Lin Duxi’s back, her fingers lingering on the clasp-just one button away from unfastening it completely.
Her face burned crimson. Flustered, she raised her hands to gently push away the person clinging to her, the slight movement making her acutely aware of her own physical reaction.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Duxi lifted her head to look at her, puzzled as to why she had stopped.
Her body’s instinctive response made An Yu eager to retreat. “Ahem, I just remembered… we still haven’t decided on a place for our date tomorrow.”
Lin Duxi had no interest in continuing the topic and slumped wearily against her shoulder. “An Yu, you’re not focusing.”
An Yu reached for the bowl of congee nearby, but her fingers recoiled upon touching the chilled porcelain.
It seemed neither she nor Lin Duxi would be having dinner tonight.
“I just thought of a place,” An Yu said, her eyes brimming with anticipation.
Lin Duxi sighed and stood up. “Alright, I’m curious to see what spot you’ve come up with. I’ll go take a shower first.”
An Yu nodded obediently, watching as Lin Duxi grabbed her change of clothes and disappeared into the bathroom. Only then did she let out a quiet exhale.
She quickly tidied herself up, changed into fresh clothes, turned on the light, and sat at the desk to seriously brainstorm locations.
What she had told Lin Duxi wasn’t entirely made up-she really had thought of a place, one they had never visited during their relationship.
An amusement park.
It was almost laughable. In the entire month they had been together, they had never once gone to an amusement park. Trying to recall her mindset back then, she realized she had believed that anywhere was fine as long as she was with Lin Duxi.
Plus, after being terrified by a haunted house during a childhood visit, she had avoided amusement parks altogether and never brought it up with Lin Duxi.
Lost in the tide of memories, An Yu eventually snapped out of it and refocused on planning their date.
When she concentrated, she became completely absorbed, so much so that she didn’t even notice when Lin Duxi finished her shower and appeared beside her.
“Are these… all the things we’re going to do?”
Lin Duxi’s soft, water-tinged voice suddenly sounded by her ear. An Yu turned to see her leaning over, carefully studying the plans.
An Yu instinctively moved to cover the notes but then stopped, realizing it was pointless.
Hiding them from Lin Duxi would make her anticipate tomorrow’s surprises, but telling her now would do more than that-it would let her imagine how their date would unfold and what they’d do together.
“Just typical couple stuff,” An Yu replied casually.
For a brief moment, Lin Duxi’s expression froze before returning to normal. “I’m looking forward to it.”
An Yu had caught that flicker of emotion and understood its cause.
Typical couple activities-things she and Lin Duxi had never done during their relationship. A pang of guilt struck An Yu. Back then, she had paid so little attention to Lin Duxi’s feelings that even their dates had always been at her place.
“If I can’t sleep tonight, An Yu, you’ll have to sing for me,” Lin Duxi said cheerfully, her face alight with expectation.
An Yu nodded.
But in the end, she never did sing. Lin Duxi was simply too exhausted. Despite having napped earlier, the moment her head hit the pillow, drowsiness overtook her.
Though she fought to stay awake, she eventually clutched An Yu’s clothes and slowly drifted off.
An Yu, on the other hand, lay in bed wide awake. The moment the system detected Lin Duxi was asleep, it immediately popped up in her mind.
“Host, do you realize what you were just doing?” The system’s voice was thick with suppressed anger. “If I hadn’t shocked you at the critical moment, you would’ve gone all the way! I’m so disappointed in you!”
An Yu raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you tell me not to defy the protagonist? Of course I had to follow Lin Duxi’s lead. I’ve been so obedient-why are you still mad?”
The system: “…” She had a point.
But something still felt off. “For something like this, if you’d refused, I would’ve been understanding! Since when have you become so rigid?”
An Yu feigned confusion. “You said not to disobey, so of course I listened. I don’t want to experience another punishment.” She shook her head as if recalling something terrifying.
“Besides, if I really had rejected the female lead, and you decided I was being defiant, forget ‘understanding’-I’d probably be thrown into punishment mode on the spot.”
An Yu’s rapid-fire retorts left the system dazed. It was furious, itching to activate punishment mode again, but couldn’t find a valid reason.
An Yu had indeed followed its earlier instructions-flawlessly. Her compliance was so impeccable she could’ve been nominated for “Employee of the Month.”
The system was seething, but with no grounds for reprimand, it could only swallow its rage and leave.
As the oppressive presence faded, An Yu exhaled in relief, simultaneously solving a puzzle in her mind.
It was true-she couldn’t defy the protagonist’s wishes. Even if she kissed Lin Duxi, as long as it was at Lin Duxi’s request, the system couldn’t interfere.
An Yu was thrilled by this discovery.
Suddenly, a hand covered her lips, halting her train of thought.
The hand idly traced her mouth before sliding down to grip her shoulder, followed by the weight of someone leaning into her.
“An Yu, don’t sigh…” Lin Duxi murmured drowsily, her eyes still closed.
An Yu glanced down. Lin Duxi remained asleep, the words seeming like nothing more than dreamy mumbling.
Smiling faintly, An Yu pushed aside her tangled thoughts and closed her eyes, ready to sleep.
“Thank you, Lin Duxi.”
