After Rebirth, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessive - Chapter 89
An Yu didn’t know what Lin Duxi had been through before. She had always assumed Lin Duxi had lived in the orphanage her whole life and only recently learned about those despicable relatives of hers.
All the self-blame from earlier was now replaced with rage. The person she cherished most had been tossed around carelessly, nearly losing her life. Just listening to Lin Duxi recount it so calmly was enough to make An Yu’s heart ache as if cut by a knife. She didn’t dare dwell on it further.
Yet Lin Duxi’s eyes were too clear, like a frozen lake that had melted only for her. The thawing springwater dripped into the fields of her heart, soothing her wounds.
It should have been Lin Duxi who was heartbroken, but instead, it was An Yu who ended up crying uncontrollably.
An Yu sniffled lightly and reached out to grasp Lin Duxi’s hand.
“I’ll make sure they pay for what they did.”
Lin Duxi smiled softly, leaning down to kiss away the tears at the corner of An Yu’s eyes. Feeling the tremble of her lashes, something in Lin Duxi’s heart suddenly softened.
“Okay, I believe you, A’Yu.” Her voice was slightly hoarse.
The two sat in silence for a while, their intertwined hands holding tightly.
Only when Lin Duxi sensed An Yu’s emotions gradually stabilizing did she continue speaking.
“Today, that man’s wife sent a message to one of my people.”
An Yu: “Zhao Sunan.”
Lin Duxi nodded.
An Yu: “I saw her in volunteer photos at the orphanage.”
Lin Duxi: “After I entered the orphanage, she somehow found out I was living there and started volunteering from time to time. That continued until I graduated high school.” She turned her head to look at An Yu, her beautiful eyes glimmering with fragmented light.
An Yu was speechless. She had already pieced together some of what happened after Lin Duxi’s graduation from the orphanage director and Little Xiaoxiao. She could roughly deduce the cause and effect, and even that much was enough to make her heart ache. She couldn’t imagine how much pain Lin Duxi must have endured when it actually happened.
“I’m sorry.” All the words An Yu wanted to say tangled in her throat. She didn’t know how to ease Lin Duxi’s sorrow. “You had to go through so much alone.”
She blamed herself. If only she had noticed Lin Duxi’s state back then, seen through the scarred heart hidden beneath her tough exterior, maybe they wouldn’t have broken up. Maybe…
An Yu lowered her head, her eyes reddening, her nose stinging.
Young people were always fixated on the surface, unable to see the unspoken love buried deep within.
A soft sigh sounded beside her ear, and then An Yu felt her face being gently cupped. She looked up to see Lin Duxi’s smiling face through her blurred vision. Lin Duxi shook her head.
“Being here with you now, A’Yu, is already enough to make me happy.”
Back when everything was shrouded in darkness, when she couldn’t see even a sliver of hope, she had still managed to reclaim the love she’d lost. To her, that was already an incredible stroke of luck.
Besides… she had already lived through it once before.
“A’Yu, don’t cry anymore. Your eyes will be swollen tomorrow, and if netizens see, they’ll tease you again.”
An Yu wiped her tears away. “I’m not crying.”
Lin Duxi chuckled. “Okay, A’Yu isn’t crying.”
Her tender voice wrapped around An Yu like silk, threading straight into her ears. An Yu couldn’t handle this kind of gentle tone from her the most-her ears, hidden beneath her hair, were already burning red.
“Keep talking. What did Zhao Sunan tell your people?” She cleared her throat, forcefully steering the conversation back on track.
Lin Duxi caught sight of the reddened tips of An Yu’s ears and knew she was no longer dwelling on the sadness from earlier. Wisely, she didn’t tease her further-even a rabbit would bite when pushed too far.
“Zhao Sunan has been trying to get close to me for a while, so I had my bodyguards secretly engage with her. Lin Yongfeng and his son have been trying to extort money from me but failed several times. Zhao Sunan said they’ve grown desperate now and want to use you to force me into giving them money.”
When she mentioned An Yu, Lin Duxi’s tone shifted abruptly, her voice laced with bone-chilling coldness.
“Lin Yongfeng said his father sacrificed his own education to fund his older brother-my…” She paused. “His father made Lin Yongfeng drop out to support Lin Chengzhou’s schooling, so he believes Lin Chengzhou’s entire family owes him. Since that man died in the fire, he couldn’t get money from him anymore, so now he’s coming after me.”
An Yu frowned. “Mad dogs.”
Lin Duxi smiled, though her eyes held no warmth. “A pack of mad dogs.”
They were setting their sights on An Yu again, but this time, she wouldn’t retreat. The consequences of backing down once had cost her nearly six years to undo. She couldn’t bear the thought of An Yu leaving her again.
Fortunately, An Yu felt the same way. “Those two will definitely make a move. Based on what Zhao Sunan said, they probably plan to use me to threaten you.”
She couldn’t help but curse under her breath.
Lin Duxi squeezed her hand. “My people are already handling things. They won’t cause us any trouble.”
An Yu turned to look at her. “Has Lin Ze had any recent contact with you?”
Lin Duxi thought for a moment before shaking her head. “Aside from the time he ambushed me near the supermarket, there’s been nothing. That time, he also came for money, and I refused.”
An Yu narrowed her eyes. “They must really be desperate for cash. They’ll probably make their move soon.”
Things indeed escalated quickly. On the very night An Yu and Lin Duxi returned from recording their show, An Yu called Shi Yu.
The other end of the line was noisy, and Shi Yu’s voice sounded slightly drunk.
An Yu: “Are you at a bar?”
Shi Yu giggled before suddenly sounding aggrieved. “I’m upset, so I’m drinking. Is that not allowed?”
“Did you and Dr. Jiang have a fight?”
The moment she asked, the other end of the line fell silent.
An Yu: “So that’s a yes.”
Shi Yu: “I don’t even know what Dr. Jiang is thinking. Today, I went to her place, and we watched a movie together. The atmosphere was so nice that I couldn’t help but kiss her. She accepted it, but afterward, she didn’t mention it at all and even avoided me. An Yu, do you think she really doesn’t like me? Maybe I’ve just been seeing her through rose-tinted glasses this whole time?”
Shi Yu rambled on about her feelings for Jiang Yu, not even sure what she was saying anymore-just pouring out whatever came to mind.
An Yu kept the call on speaker, listening quietly. Shi Yu didn’t care if An Yu was actually paying attention. She just needed an outlet for her emotions, and since she had no one else to talk to, she could only drink alone.
Suddenly, An Yu remembered-had she ever deliberately avoided Lin Duxi’s kisses before? Had Lin Duxi felt as miserable as Shi Yu did now? A pang of guilt struck her.
When the voice on the other end paused, An Yu spoke up. “Which bar are you at? I’ll send someone to pick you up.”
Shi Yu: “I think I just saw Pei Lu.”
“What?”
“What’s he doing? Ugh, it’s a bit far. Let me get closer.” Shi Yu’s voice turned stealthy.
An Yu quickly stopped her. “Don’t go over there alone! Stay where you are. I’ll come get you.”
“Nah, it’s fine. I see him now.” Shi Yu whispered, “He’s drinking with some guy with yellow hair.”
An Yu’s chest tightened. “Yellow hair? What does he look like?”
Shi Yu squinted through the neon-lit haze. “His hair is a deep yellow, the kind delinquents dye. He’s wearing all black and doesn’t look very old-probably college-aged. Pei Lu even has his arm around the guy’s shoulders, drinking like they’re best buddies.”
An Yu grabbed her jacket. “Stay there. I’m coming to get you.”
Pei Lu actually knows Lin Ze?
An Yu was stunned. Her only thought was to verify if it was true, but the moment she stepped outside and the cold wind hit her, clarity returned.
She couldn’t go. They both knew her. If she was spotted, it would alert them.
An Yu closed the door, standing in the hallway, when a sudden exclamation from the phone interrupted her thoughts.
“Did they see you?” An Yu tensed. “Get out of there!”
Shi Yu sounded dazed. “I see Dr. Jiang!”
An Yu let out a sigh of relief.
Shi Yu: “She saw me! She’s walking toward me! What do I do?”
An Yu: “She probably came looking for you. Don’t be afraid.”
Shi Yu: “But I-”
The call suddenly went silent. An Yu called her name a few times.
Then, a gentle woman’s voice came through the speaker. “Why are you here alone?” An Yu immediately shut her mouth.
Shi Yu gripped her phone tightly. “Just drinking. Isn’t that what people come here for?”
The woman spoke again, her voice laced with suppressed worry. “If you want to drink, I can drink with you. Don’t come to places like this by yourself.”
Shi Yu listened to her gentle tone but inexplicably felt even worse. She couldn’t help retorting, “Do I need to report to Dr. Jiang every time I go to a bar?”
The woman fell silent.
An Yu hesitated, wondering if she should hang up, when the voice on the other end spoke again.
“About what happened earlier… I’m sorry.”
Shi Yu’s eyes widened. Had she misheard? “What did you say?”
“I don’t know how to define love. I’ve been so focused on work these past years that love felt like something distant. When you kissed me today, I didn’t know how to respond. I didn’t know how to express myself, so I instinctively avoided it. I made you sad, and I’m sorry.”
An Yu hung up. The rest probably didn’t concern her anymore.
