After Rebirth, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessive - Chapter 92
The system finally appeared when Pei Lu was issued the arrest warrant. The moment it materialized in An Yu’s mind, it immediately activated its punishment protocol. An Yu winced in pain, her brows furrowing tightly as the plate in her hand slipped and shattered on the floor.
“An Yu, do you have any idea what you’re doing? What was the purpose of the tasks I assigned you? Look at what you’ve done-the male lead is now a wanted criminal!” The system’s voice was weak, but its fury was unmistakable.
“He brought this upon himself. He was all too eager to commit crimes.” An Yu pressed her fingers hard against her temples, trying to alleviate the throbbing pain.
“What do you know?” The mechanical voice grew even weaker. Eventually, the system stopped the electric shocks and switched to relentless condemnation.
“Your mission was to bring the male and female leads together. Look at what you’ve accomplished-the male lead is now a fugitive. The mission has failed.” It let out a chilling, mirthless laugh. “It seems you really don’t want to stay in this world anymore.”
Cold sweat trickled down An Yu’s back. Even in its weakened state, the pressure from the system’s otherworldly presence was nearly unbearable. Forcing herself to remain composed, she managed a faint smile.
“Then you’ll just have to stick with me. After all, this is all you can do now, isn’t it? Ugh…” She stifled a groan, gripping the edge of the table to keep herself upright.
“What did you say?” The system, provoked, resumed the electric shocks.
An Yu felt as if her skull were splitting open. Gritting her teeth, she continued mockingly, “Isn’t it true? What else can you do now? Rewrite the memories of the entire world to make them forget Pei Lu’s warrant? Do you even have the power for that anymore?”
The system’s energy faltered for a moment before retaliating with even greater force. An invisible hand seemed to clamp around An Yu’s throat, cutting off her breath.
“I’m just temporarily low on energy. Once I find the breach and repair it, all of this will be effortless. Don’t get too cocky-”
Suddenly, the mechanical voice cut off. The suffocating pressure vanished from An Yu’s throat and mind.
Before she could process what had happened, her legs gave out. Just as she was about to collapse, a pair of hands caught her.
A familiar voice reached her ears. Gasping for air, An Yu forced her eyes open and saw Lin Duxi’s anxious face swimming in her blurred vision.
“I’m fine…” An Yu reassured her weakly.
Lin Duxi held An Yu tightly, letting her lean against her as she guided her away from the broken shards on the floor and onto the couch.
“How is this ‘fine’?” Lin Duxi’s voice was hoarse, on the verge of tears.
An Yu couldn’t bear to look at her damp eyes and buried her face in Lin Duxi’s shoulder, inhaling the soothing fragrance of her hair.
“Really, I just need to rest for a bit.”
Lin Duxi’s heart ached with helpless fury-why hadn’t she heard the commotion in the kitchen sooner? And why did that thing controlling An Yu always appear when she wasn’t around?
She gently stroked An Yu’s back until her breathing steadied, then pulled her into another embrace.
“Did it come for you again?” Lin Duxi asked, suppressing her anguish.
“Mhm. It was asking about Pei Lu.” An Yu nuzzled against her shoulder. “But it’s nothing serious. I provoked it, and now its power is fading even more.”
The system had inadvertently revealed that its energy was leaking through some kind of breach-likely the reason for its weakness. It must be desperate, unable to complete its mission while its strength dwindled day by day. A faint smile curved An Yu’s lips.
Though she didn’t know the cause, this was a good sign. The weaker the system became, the better for her.
Lin Duxi didn’t press further. She had seen An Yu’s condition-this was no ordinary punishment.
She continued softly patting An Yu’s back, letting her rest, but her eyes darkened with icy resolve.
She had been wondering-how did that thing controlling An Yu find her? And why assign such a mission?
Last night, An Yu’s muttered words had inadvertently confirmed a suspicion Lin Duxi had avoided confronting.
That dream-the one where An Yu lay on the cold concrete, the scene where Lin Duxi went to see her-An Yu had dreamed it too.
An Yu knew she had died.
An Yu was just like her.
Lin Duxi couldn’t bear to imagine what An Yu had been thinking in those final moments, staring at the sky as she lay on the ground.
Tears welled in her eyes.
Noticing Lin Duxi’s distress, An Yu steadied herself and sat up, only to see her girlfriend’s glistening eyes, tears threatening to fall.
Her heart clenched. She reached out, brushing away the moisture at Lin Duxi’s eyelashes, assuming she was still upset about earlier.
“I’m really okay. I was just startled. It’s gone now-scared off by you. Our Xiao Lin is amazing.” She nuzzled Lin Duxi’s cheek, coaxing her like a child.
But Lin Duxi only looked even more aggrieved, her lips trembling, the tip of her nose reddening.
An Yu panicked. “What’s wrong?”
Lin Duxi didn’t answer. Instead, she pulled An Yu into a tight embrace, burying her tears in An Yu’s clothes.
An Yu smiled faintly. Now it was her turn to comfort Lin Duxi.
After a while, Lin Duxi released her and stood. “I’m going to clean the kitchen.”
Remembering the shattered plate, An Yu immediately offered to do it herself-only to freeze under Lin Duxi’s sharp glare.
An Yu: “…I’ll wait for you.”
As Lin Duxi disappeared into the kitchen, An Yu sat on the couch, clasping her hands as she pondered the system’s words.
Her taunts had clearly struck a nerve, provoking its rage.
The system had admitted its energy was leaking through some breach, and it couldn’t locate the problem. It was truly at its limit-but An Yu had no idea what it might do to recover its power.
Her expression darkened again.
Just then, a phone on the table rang. An Yu picked it up-it was Lin Duxi’s phone, with Ji Qi calling.
She carried it to the kitchen, handing it to Lin Duxi and taking the broom from her in exchange.
Lin Duxi glanced at the screen and answered on speakerphone.
“Lin Duxi, we’ve found Pei Lu.”
An Yu’s sweeping halted. She looked up to see Lin Duxi’s face tense with seriousness.
“Our people spotted him on surveillance near the airport. He was trying to flee by plane, but his ID was flagged. He’s still in Jiang City. You and An Yu should stay home these next few days. I’m worried he might come for you.”
Lin Duxi responded with a few cold instructions before hanging up.
“He’ll probably come for me,” An Yu said flatly.
Lin Duxi turned to her, eyes filled with questions.
An Yu put down the broom: “Given how unhinged he is, he’d probably assume I was the one behind everything you did. He’ll definitely come for me.”
“But don’t worry, this place has high security. He shouldn’t be able to get in.” Seeing the worry in Lin Duxi’s eyes, An Yu quickly reassured her.
“Did A-Yu forget how Lin Ze got in last time?” Lin Duxi asked, her voice trembling, fragile enough to break one’s heart.
An Yu lowered her head and fell silent. She realized now how laughable her words had been.
No matter how tight the security of a residential area, if someone was determined to get in, they’d find a way.
“A-Yu, don’t leave the house these next few days. I’ll assign more people to guard you.” Lin Duxi stepped forward and took her hand.
An Yu nodded.
For the following days, the two stayed at Lin Duxi’s home, postponing all public engagements and activities.
An Yu felt like her bones were about to turn to mush from lying around so much. Remembering that her drawing tablet was still at her own place, she decided to go retrieve it so she could draw.
She got up and turned the doorknob, only to find, to her surprise, that it wouldn’t budge.
Thinking she hadn’t used enough strength, An Yu applied more force, but it still didn’t move.
So she went to look for the key. She remembered Lin Duxi always kept it in the drawer by the entryway, but it wasn’t there. She searched the entire foyer-still nothing.
“A-Yu, where are you going?” Lin Duxi appeared soundlessly behind her, the light in her eyes flickering as if it might shatter at any moment.
“To my place.”
“What for?” Lin Duxi stared at her.
“To get my drawing tablet. I want to draw.” An Yu answered truthfully, her palm on the doorknob growing warm.
Lin Duxi walked over, took An Yu’s hand from the knob, and led her away from the door. Gazing at her tenderly, she said, “I’ll get it for you.”
Lin Duxi was dressed in silk sleepwear, and because she had just woken up, a few buttons were undone, revealing pale skin dotted with faint red marks.
Her entire demeanor was relaxed, but her eyes held an unreadable emotion-An Yu guessed it was nervousness.
An Yu nodded. It didn’t matter who fetched the tablet, so Lin Duxi smiled, patted her head, threw on a thicker coat, took the key from her pocket, and unlocked the door.
Then the door closed, and An Yu heard the lock click.
An Yu felt both exasperated and endeared by Lin Duxi’s protectiveness.
Lin Duxi slipped the key into her pocket and zipped it up. She glanced back at An Yu’s apartment door before heading downstairs.
Unconsciously, late autumn had arrived. Lin Duxi looked up at the withered leaves swirling in the wind and suddenly realized she had already spent several months with An Yu.
Time, which had once dragged on endlessly, now flowed like water when she was with An Yu. Just being together made the days pass swiftly.
Lin Duxi’s lips curved into a smile.
She exited the residential complex, where several men in suits and sunglasses bowed at the sight of her. Lin Duxi nodded and followed them.
After just a few steps, she heard furious shouting in the distance.
One of the men beside her explained, “Pei Lu has been lurking around the complex these past few days. He’s very alert, so it took us some time to catch him.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Lin Duxi saw the man being restrained by two bodyguards up ahead.
Pei Lu was filthy from head to toe, his hair matted against his scalp with a few dead leaves stuck in it. No one would recognize him as the polished, glamorous man he once was.
Pei Lu had been cursing the bodyguards for their ignorance, but when he saw Lin Duxi, his eyes lit up with hope. He thought she had come to save him.
“Lin Duxi! Duxi, you came for me! I knew you wouldn’t abandon me!” he cried desperately. These past few days, he had felt less than human-penniless and hunted.
Lin Duxi stared at him coldly, her eyes devoid of emotion.
Pei Lu didn’t notice at all and kept rambling, “I knew it! It must’ve been that bitch An Yu manipulating you! You still love me, don’t you, Duxi? You-”
He looked up and met Lin Duxi’s icy gaze, freezing mid-sentence.
“An Yu… hahaha, An Yu… She hates me so much! Lin Duxi, did she make you hate me too?”
He struggled to break free, but the bodyguards pinned him down effortlessly. In the scuffle, something fell from his pocket-a gleaming knife, its blade reflecting the cold autumn light.
Lin Duxi picked it up, her impassive face mirrored on the polished surface.
“Hahaha! An Yu ruined me! If I’m going to prison, she won’t escape either-ugh!” Pei Lu burst into hysterical laughter before a kick sent him crashing into the wall. Blood trickled from his lips.
“You don’t deserve to say her name.” Lin Duxi’s voice was frigid, like a whisper from the devil herself.
She handed the knife to one of the bodyguards. “Take him to the police station. Keep it quiet.”
The bodyguard nodded and followed Lin Duxi as she walked away, leaving Pei Lu’s maniacal laughter behind.
“We’ve also located Lin Ze. He was working as a manager at Pei Lu’s casino. He’s definitely involved in this. Lin Yongfeng has already been detained-his past crimes are enough to put him away for years.”
Lin Duxi nodded. “Get Zhao Sunan a good lawyer to help her file for divorce.”
The bodyguard stopped and bowed, watching Lin Duxi leave before turning back to deal with Pei Lu.
Lin Duxi stopped by a supermarket to buy some groceries and snacks. By the time she stepped out, night had fallen.
The evening was even colder. She tightened her coat around herself.
Returning to the complex, she went to An Yu’s apartment to retrieve the drawing tablet before finally unlocking her own door.
An Yu was on the couch watching TV. Hearing the door, she set the remote aside and got up to take the bags from Lin Duxi.
“I stopped by the supermarket. Is this the one?” Lin Duxi showed her the tablet.
An Yu barely glanced at it before nodding, her gaze lingering on Lin Duxi instead.
“Everything okay?” An Yu asked.
Lin Duxi loved it when An Yu’s attention was entirely on her. She smiled. “Yes. The bodyguards did their job.”
An Yu exhaled in relief and put the groceries in the fridge before connecting the tablet to her computer.
“Who would’ve thought Pei Lu could hide for so long without getting caught?” An Yu mused.
Lin Duxi’s expression remained calm as she looked at her. “Maybe he had cash on hand.”
An Yu didn’t want to dwell on that despicable man. She turned and saw Lin Duxi watching her obediently, looking so endearing that An Yu couldn’t resist pulling her into a hug. “Still, this isn’t so bad. It’s like we’ve skipped straight to retired life.”
Lin Duxi held her tightly, nuzzling against the fabric of An Yu’s clothes, greedily breathing in her scent. The emotions in her eyes were unreadable.
Yes. She loved this just as much.
