After Saving My Possessive Best Friend, I Couldn't Escape (GL) - Chapter 14
The two went to the cafeteria to eat. It was past the peak serving time, and not many dishes were left. Zhou Meize frowned as soon as she walked in, looking around critically.
“Xiaoyu, I told you I’d treat you to a meal, but you insisted on coming to the cafeteria,” Zhou Meize carried her tray and picked among the most expensive dishes. “Is the food here even edible?”
Ye Yu smiled. “Auntie will scold you again if she hears that.”
“What doesn’t she scold me for? She just likes you,” Zhou Meize sighed, but she didn’t complain anymore. She took a serving of pineapple rice and was about to sit down. When she passed Ye Yu, she glanced at the food on Ye Yu’s plate and casually remarked, “You’re eating too much, aren’t you?”
Ye Yu’s hand, holding the tray, paused. She didn’t turn her head. “What?”
Zhou Meize continued her unreserved criticism. “Rice is the main staple. You took so much, and you have two side dishes. You’ll get fat.”
One serving of rice, one plate of stir-fried seasonal vegetables, and one fried egg.
The three light colors—white, yellow, and green—were “too much” in Zhou Meize’s eyes?
Fang Zhile, who was standing three steps away, felt a lump in her throat. She strode over and gave Ye Yu a big smile. “Ye Yu, you came to eat too!”
Ye Yu turned around in surprise. She had just parted ways with this person in the morning, and now she met her again at noon. Ye Yu didn’t even realize that the corner of her mouth involuntarily curled up the moment she heard Fang Zhile’s voice.
“Yes,” Ye Yu looked down at Fang Zhile’s food. “I came to eat.”
Fang Zhile raised her voice, exclaiming, “Oh, Ye Yu, why are you eating so little? It’s not filling enough; you’ll starve to death!”
Ye Yu chuckled. “How could I starve to death?”
“Is this even 300 calories? You practice calligraphy every day and must be so tired, especially with the exams coming up. You should eat more for lunch,” Fang Zhile glanced at the sullen-faced Zhou Meize next to her, implying something. “Are you eating so little because you don’t have an appetite? Did you run into something annoying that ruined your appetite?”
Zhou Meize’s face darkened even more, but Ye Yu thought Fang Zhile was referring to Sun Li and the other two. She winked at Fang Zhile mischievously and whispered, “No, the annoying thing has already been taken care of.”
Fang Zhile immediately understood and also leaned in, whispering, “Really?”
Ye Yu nodded. “Mhm!”
Zhou Meize, who had been treated as invisible from the start, was highly displeased. She interrupted Ye Yu, “Xiaoyu, we should go eat now.”
Ye Yu said, “I’ll be there soon.”
Fang Zhile walked directly to Ye Yu’s side. “I’m going to eat too. Let’s go together.”
Ye Yu: “Okay.”
Zhou Meize’s sense of aristocratic pride prevented her from saying something as low-class as telling Fang Zhile to leave, even though she wanted to.
It’s just eating together. What’s the big deal?
Thinking this, Zhou Meize sat down with them, her face still stormy.
Fang Zhile’s meal was even simpler, though she had a lot of rice. She chewed her rice carefully, finding opportunities to chat with Ye Yu between bites, making Ye Yu laugh so hard she could barely eat.
Fang Zhile quickly said, “No, Ye Yu, don’t laugh. Eat! Are you not getting enough? I’ll get you another portion. I told you, you’re so thin, how can you eat so little?”
Ye Yu dabbed the tear of laughter from her eye with a tissue. “Ah? Another portion? There’s not enough time.”
“Then I’ll get you a takeaway?”
“Let me think,” Ye Yu handed over her meal card. “Take away a box of cut fruit.”
Knowing that the balance on her card wasn’t enough for cut fruit, Fang Zhile didn’t hesitate for a second. She took the meal card and went to get the food.
As soon as Fang Zhile left, Zhou Meize, who had been silently eating, suddenly spoke up. “When did you get involved with people like her?”
People like her.
The tone held a faint disgust and undisguised contempt.
Ye Yu’s smile gradually faded, but her tone remained gentle. “She is my friend.”
“Friend? Is she worthy? People like her clearly have bad intentions,” Zhou Meize said earnestly. “A poor student trying to latch onto the wealthy. They just see you as an easy target. You should stay away from them.”
Ye Yu’s expression was indifferent. She picked up a piece of snow pea, chewed it slowly, and said without emotion, “Okay.”
“Also, the food here is terrible. Don’t come here again. I’ll ask the butler to send you an extra meal,” Zhou Meize said.
Ye Yu’s chopsticks paused in her bowl. She said calmly, “Uncle is so busy. Don’t bother him.”
Zhou Meize didn’t press the issue, sighing softly. “Xiaoyu, you are always so considerate of others.”
The peace between them didn’t last long. In a melodramatic world, a melodramatic plot was bound to happen. When Fang Zhile returned, she saw Sun Yangyang grabbing Zhou Meize’s sleeve, sitting close to her, and saying something pitifully.
Ye Yu, sitting across from them, was eating with her head down, her expression calm as if she didn’t see Sun Yangyang. However, the hand holding her fork was clenched, revealing faint blue veins on the back of her hand.
“Ye Yu,” Fang Zhile’s tone was flat, her face composed, yet with a subtle coolness beneath the gentleness. “Are you finished eating?”
She stood five steps away from the three of them, holding the packed cut fruit. Her presence was strong, stubbornly trying to interrupt Ye Yu’s thoughts.
Ye Yu turned to look at her, paused for a few seconds, then stood up. “Yes, I am.”
The hand holding her plate was steady, no longer tense. She didn’t spare a glance for the people opposite her. “Wait for me.”
Zhou Meize wanted to stop Ye Yu, but her sleeve was clutched by Sun Yangyang, who was crying and asking if Zhou Meize was going to cut ties with her. Zhou Meize had to sit down to comfort her. When she looked up again, Ye Yu and Fang Zhile were gone.
“In broad daylight, it’s morally corrupt,” Fang Zhile complained to Ye Yu about Zhou Meize’s social conduct on the way. Ye Yu didn’t agree, sometimes defending Zhou Meize. “That’s just her personality.”
Fang Zhile didn’t argue with Ye Yu. If Ye Yu disagreed with that point, she would criticize another. “Her taste is terrible. Look at that Sun Yangyang, average looking, average figure, just an average little nobody. Liking someone like that shows Zhou Meize’s taste isn’t so great either.”
Ye Yu tilted her head and stared at Fang Zhile, making her feel a little embarrassed. “Why are you looking at me?”
Ye Yu watched for a while, then suddenly stepped forward, just half a step away from Fang Zhile, and said with focus, “You are prettier.”
Ye Yu had the face of a noble lady, from the small mole on her eyebrow to the graceful curve of her chin, every part was exquisite and flawless. Like an expensive jade artifact, just looking at it made one’s heart beat faster. Moreover, being looked at so closely by such a breathtaking face, Fang Zhile’s face flushed red from head to toe. “Wh-where? I, I’m just average too… I mean, you are the most beautiful.”
“Cute,” Ye Yu reached out and gently squeezed the soft flesh on Fang Zhile’s cheeks. The touch was cool and tender. Ye Yu released her fingers, then couldn’t help but rub them again. “So cute.”
With that, Fang Zhile turned as red as a cooked shrimp. She started walking with her arms and legs moving in unison.
“Um, I won’t go back to the dorm,” Fang Zhile finally managed to speak after calming down a bit.
Ye Yu thought about it. She had just talked to Zhou Meize, and Zhou Meize hadn’t had time to warn the three girls yet. Fang Zhile would likely be bullied if she went back to the dorm now.
Ye Yu said, “Why don’t you come back to my dorm?”
“No,” Fang Zhile grabbed her hair. “I want to do a practice test this afternoon. I feel like I’m falling behind a bit lately.”
Ye Yu had to nod. “Alright then.”
After saying goodbye to Ye Yu, Fang Zhile went straight back to the classroom. What she said was true. Since transmigrating, she wasn’t completely familiar with the textbooks yet. Science and engineering subjects were fine, but she still needed to memorize Chinese texts. The minor exam was in half a month, and she didn’t want her scores to drop drastically; that would attract too much attention.
She finished two practice tests and memorized five text passages during the lunch break. Fang Zhile cross-referenced the answers and listed the concepts she got wrong, correcting them during breaks and asking the teacher about the ones she didn’t understand.
When the afternoon bell rang, Zhou Yunyi was happily packing her school bag. “The holiday’s starting! It’s finally the weekend!”
Fang Zhile didn’t look up. “Happy weekend.”
Zhou Yunyi smiled. “You’ve been looking down all afternoon.”
Fang Zhile moved her neck, her eyes still fixed on the test paper. “It’s alright. I’ll be looking up all evening later.”
“Huh?”
After correcting the test paper, Fang Zhile put on her canvas bag and walked out the side door. Sure enough, she saw a luxury car parked under the large tree near the side door.
Zhou Meize was standing by the car door, talking impatiently to the person inside.
