After Saving My Possessive Best Friend, I Couldn't Escape (GL) - Chapter 26
Fang Zhile didn’t treat her any differently, but Ye Yu still felt that she was being slightly evasive.
“She won’t talk about you like that again,” Ye Yu suddenly said.
Fang Zhile was kneading dough. At the remark, her hands paused briefly, then started kneading vigorously again. “It doesn’t matter.”
Ye Yu watched her. She felt that Fang Zhile had never spoken ill of Zhou Meize in front of her. She could curse Zhou Meize to her face, but she wouldn’t speak badly of her fiancée in front of Ye Yu. Her behavior was so frank and open, making the others seem even more inwardly dark by comparison.
Ye Yu’s eyes drifted, her fingers intertwining, a look of helplessness surfacing on her face.
However, if Fang Zhile had heard Ye Yu’s inner thoughts right now, she would probably burst out laughing. She doesn’t curse Zhou Meize? Even without cursing, she could still plant seeds of suspicion!
“The dumplings are vegetable-filled,” Fang Zhile whispered. “I didn’t buy meat.”
Ye Yu quickly said it didn’t matter. “I ate too much at noon. It’s good to eat something light tonight.”
“Um, did she come to see you about something?” Fang Zhile started using a calculated, ‘tea-master’ tone. “Will she be angry if you eat at my place?”
Ye Yu felt increasing dissatisfaction toward Zhou Meize internally, but she soothed Fang Zhile verbally. “You don’t need to mind her. I don’t know why she’s become like this over the years, so increasingly tactless.”
Fang Zhile just said “Oh” and lowered her head, remaining silent.
Ye Yu’s guilt deepened. She looked apologetically at Fang Zhile. “Although I can’t make her apologize to you, I never condone her actions.”
“I don’t need her apology,” Fang Zhile continued with the implication. “But don’t you two have an engagement? Why would you say that?”
Ye Yu walked over to help chop vegetables and whispered, “She’s never apologized since she was little.”
Furthermore, if she forced Zhou Meize to apologize for this, Zhou Meize would probably be furious. She wouldn’t think she was in the wrong and would go looking for trouble with Fang Zhile.
Looking for trouble…
A thought suddenly flashed in Ye Yu’s mind at that moment, but it vanished too quickly for her to grasp.
Fang Zhile glanced at Ye Yu’s expression, speaking with a hint of irritation. She intentionally said, “I’m only letting it go out of respect for you. From now on, whenever we are together, I’ll avoid her.”
Ye Yu’s eyes widened. She suddenly said, “No.”
Fang Zhile lost her patience. “No to this, no to that. She’s your fiancée, and I can’t curse her out in front of you. I also don’t want to feel suffocated like I did today. What do you expect me to do?”
Ye Yu was abruptly yelled at by Fang Zhile. She shrank her neck back, a flicker of confusion in her eyes. That’s right. One was her fiancée, and the other was Fang Zhile…
Fang Zhile.
Ye Yu’s thoughts stalled on those two words and wouldn’t move.
Fang Zhile did almost all the work for the meal, with Ye Yu acting as a clumsy assistant. Neither of them pursued the argument further.
After finishing the meal, Ye Yu had no reason to stay and left for home.
Behind her, Fang Zhile stood at the doorway watching her go. In front of Ye Yu, was a small road dimly lit by streetlamps.
It belatedly dawned on Ye Yu that the purpose of her completely baseless visit was simply to determine if Fang Zhile was upset.
And judging by her appearance… she couldn’t tell. Not unhappy, but not particularly happy either.
Ye Yu felt lost. She had never dealt with such a complex relationship. In her decade-plus life, friends were simply Zhou Meize and others. ‘Others’ were just others, and Zhou Meize was listed separately only because she was her fiancée.
But now, an extra person had been added to this categorization.
Fang Zhile, Zhou Meize, and Others.
Ye Yu found this sequence strange but couldn’t articulate why.
However, it seemed Zhou Meize had promised not to cause Fang Zhile any more trouble, and Fang Zhile had also said she would let it go out of respect for Ye Yu. With the two achieving temporary peace, she shouldn’t be caught in the middle again… Right?
Ye Yu, consumed by the frustration of an insoluble problem—the most vexing she had encountered in her life—walked further away.
After watching Ye Yu disappear down the road, Fang Zhile returned inside and opened her desktop computer. The screen instantly switched to a stock market page interwoven with red and green lines.
She wasn’t going to indulge in sadness over a few words from Zhou Meize. That verbal attack couldn’t even scratch her surface. If it weren’t for the risk of revealing her identity, she would have slammed the door in Zhou Meize’s face right then and there. Later, fearing Ye Yu might mind, she invited her over for dumplings. But that was the extent of it. Ye Yu was Ye Yu, and Zhou Meize shouldn’t dare try to leverage her connection to Ye Yu! She would continue to curse Zhou Meize whenever they met again!
The stock chart kept changing. Red and green lights flickered across Fang Zhile’s face, reflecting her intensely focused expression. She looked like a cat that had smelled meat, its eyes glowing faintly in the darkness.
The Fang Zhile in the book came from a poor family and started school late. When she transmigrated, she was already over eighteen. Fang Zhile immediately mortgaged the house she was living in for a loan, dividing the money into three parts: one part loaned to the uncle on the back street to open his restaurant, one part invested in a fund, and the final part put into the stock market.
The back street uncle’s restaurant would soon be discovered by a CCTV food program and would become the most popular restaurant in the city within a year. Fang Zhile had almost cried from hunger while reading the descriptions of the food in the uncle’s restaurant in the book. The author was likely a chef or a foodie. The plot was melodramatic, but the food descriptions were mouthwatering.
The uncle happened to be short on starting capital. Fang Zhile’s calculations were quick and precise. She loaned the money to the uncle in exchange for a ten percent stake. The uncle was moved to tears when he received the money. He had no idea that this amount of money wouldn’t even buy one percent of the shares later on. He vowed that if the restaurant failed, he would sell everything he owned to pay her back.
At the time, a smiling Fang Zhile patted the uncle’s shoulder sympathetically and said it didn’t matter. “If it fails, consider it my filial piety to you. If it weren’t for your care after Grandma passed, I wouldn’t have grown up.” The uncle was instantly moved to a passionate fervor.
Fang Zhile: Laughter in her heart.
The money invested in the fund was not a large amount, and Fang Zhile chose the safest possible option. The amount put into the stock market, however, went straight for high risk, high return, dancing on the constantly fluctuating lines.
Half a month had passed since she transmigrated, and she had only met Ye Yu a few days ago. The plot in the book was just beginning, and many events were waiting for her to navigate. In her future plans, nothing was more essential than money.
Soon, a deposit notification popped up on her phone. Fang Zhile glanced at it and threw the money into the fund. She pursed her lips in dissatisfaction. The amount wasn’t even enough to reach seven figures. Such a small amount wasn’t enough to support Ye Yu.
Fang Zhile stayed up until midnight before turning off the computer and falling into a deep sleep.
She worked a full day at the milk tea shop on Sunday and reported to school on time on Monday. Fang Zhile entered the classroom through the back door. Unfortunately, she ran right into Li Zi and the other two.
Li Zi glanced at her contemptuously. “Out of respect for Sister Meize, we’ll let you off for now, but don’t get too arrogant. If you anger us, we’ll immediately release your photos.”
Fang Zhile looked at them calmly, highly amused inside. An ambiguous photo was their weapon to threaten her? Perhaps it would work on others. Even though the photo wasn’t explicit, the suggestive, intrusive angle and the exposed strip of waist were enough to cause shame. Fortunately, the original Fang Zhile was timid and introverted and never took off her clothes in the dorm, or the photos taken would have been far worse than this.
“Do you think we only have that one photo?” Sun Li seemed to have sensed what she was thinking. Her eyes slowly brewed a thick malice, and she suddenly smiled. “That one is the most conservative. If you don’t behave, be careful. We’ll release the other ‘racy’ photos.”
Fang Zhile’s expression froze, and her movement through the doorway suddenly stiffened.
