After the Cannon Fodder A Accidentally Marked the Paranoid Female Lead - Chapter 9
Hong Kong is an international metropolis, dominated by concrete buildings. For greenery, one has to go hiking or to a park; the streets are lined with all sorts of doorplates, a unique feature belonging only to Hong Kong.
Autumn in Hong Kong has a story-like feel. Old shops can be seen everywhere, and having watched Hong Kong movies since childhood, Ming Sian felt little strangeness from the new city; it felt more like scenes from a movie coming to life.
The sports car handled well. Buying a car in Hong Kong is clearly an act of the wealthy; with high taxes and parking spaces that can cost as much as another car, even those earning millions a year might not choose to buy one, let alone a luxury car worth two million.
The model was similar to an AMG GT. The exterior design wasn’t as low as common sports cars; the overall design was aggressive, the body lines were full of power, sporty and stylish. The black color was oppressive, the interior was full of technology, and the performance was strong—compared to socialites of the same level, it was much more low-key.
Ming Sian’s driving skills were good. In her previous life, she went from a second-hand Volkswagen to eventually owning an Audi A6, which she bought to meet clients and increase their trust; for many, a car represents “face.” Ordinary office workers could just use a “Chopped Chili Fish Head” (a tiny EV) for commuting. Though she usually rode motorcycles more often, as small towns didn’t ban them.
She preferred the feeling of the wind on her face, so she opened the car roof while driving to avoid an awkward atmosphere spreading in the small space—though it was already very awkward.
In fact, He Yining’s appearance fit her aesthetic perfectly: cold, intellectual, a comfortable sense of beauty, with composure in every gesture. She was highly capable; looking at her resume, she graduated from Hong Kong University, spent a year in the UK to obtain dual degrees in business and law, returned to Hong Kong to intern at the He family firm, obtained her PCLL, and was “parachuted” into Anning Law Firm as the boss, completing major cases—she was the elite of the elite.
If not for their fated entanglement, given the conditions of Anning Law Firm, she could have worked there for at least ten years with high pay, various subsidies, and the backing of a large firm—what a great resume.
Unfortunately, cannon fodder dies if they get too close to the female lead.
Ming Sian stole a glance at her, calculating what kind of method she could use to act out so that the other would be willing to fire her.
She came up with an answer: pursue He Yining. Given her own conditions, no matter how good her looks were, she only needed to show blind self-confidence, grease, and a “big talker” attitude. Even if He Yining really intended to use her as a shield, she would likely lose interest and might even kick her out early.
“How long has Lawyer He liked me?” Ming Sian started with a “big move,” wanting to see how He Yining would react.
From their brief interactions, He Yining usually had a cold face, except in the private booth when both their pheromones were slightly out of control and she showed a different expression.
After hearing her words, He Yining was stunned for a moment, clearly speechless. She wanted to say something but feared Ming Sian would “climb up the pole like a snake.”
How did this “man-shaped, dog-souled” Ming Sian have the confidence to say such a thing?
She didn’t ask if she liked her; she assumed she did and asked directly how long she had liked her.
He Yining’s eyes narrowed slightly, looking at Ming Sian with a sense of scrutiny. Her long-standing high position made her radiate an aura of pressure from the inside out.
“Where do you get your confidence?”
Ming Sian didn’t back down. “Of course, it’s the confidence Lawyer He gave me. From what has happened since we met, Lawyer He’s affection is too obvious. I’m someone who never refuses anyone, let alone Lawyer He… oh, Yining is so beautiful and outstanding, I have no reason to refuse.”
Perhaps because she called her too intimately, He Yining frowned and reached out to turn on the music. Cold, low-pitched music played, soothing her inner anger.
She was always calm; how could she be easily triggered by Ming Sian? As a qualified third-generation member of the He family, emotions must not be exposed; if there must be emotion, it is only to achieve a goal.
Ming Sian’s goal was to make her angry, so she wouldn’t let it go.
Thus, Ming Sian spoke again: “I don’t like being in a relationship, but I can maintain an ambiguous relationship with you. Holding hands, kissing… it’s all fine. But no ‘love’ talk.”
Her words were too explicit. If He Yining still didn’t get angry, she would truly suspect He Yining liked her.
Logically, even if He Yining hadn’t “awakened” to the plot, she wouldn’t ask such “trash” to be her shield.
If she were He Yining, if she didn’t beat her up, she would at least scold her.
He Yining suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled the steering wheel to one side, the car crossing into another lane.
Ming Sian violently broke free from He Yining’s hand, stabilized the direction, decelerated, and slammed on the brakes.
“Are you crazy!”
Luckily, He Yining lived in a villa area, and the further they drove this way, the fewer people there were; otherwise, who knows what would have happened.
He Yining’s expression was cold, as if it had just been an accident. A sneer hung at the corner of her lips. “Can’t handle the stakes?”
Madwoman, playing with our lives?
Ming Sian took a deep breath. “He Yining, Eldest Miss He, we are not from the same world. Find someone else to play with.”
“Then don’t do unnecessary things.” He Yining’s gaze and tone were devoid of humanity, like a cold machine looking at another machine.
Letting Ming Sian drive her home today was an accident, but it was just as well to let her know: stay obediently under her eyes and don’t make futile struggles.
A variable from another world… to prevent this variable from coming true, it was best to keep her close and watch her. Suppress her first; if suppression failed, she could also make her change identities.
Ming Sian’s gaze at this moment, and what she was doing, was like a wolf cub refusing human domestication, thinking of escaping the master’s palm and longing for freedom.
If necessary, He Yining would take action to tame the wolf cub into a loyal dog.
Ming Sian didn’t quite understand. What did “unnecessary things” mean? She didn’t want to stay at Anning Law Firm; was wanting to control her own freedom considered an “unnecessary thing”?
“What exactly do you want to do?” Even her attempts to flee were not allowed by He Yining.
“Keep driving.” He Yining’s tone was calm. “What I do depends on whether you are well-behaved.”
Depends on whether I’m well-behaved? Treating me like a pet!
The image of a master taming a dog appeared in Ming Sian’s mind, making her teeth itch with anger. The bad woman was truly aggravating.
“Eldest Miss He, if you want to play, there are plenty of people who can play with you.”
“Play? Ming Sian, why do you always say I am playing?”
The car roof was now closed. He Yining looked at her own reflection through the car window, then her gaze landed on Ming Sian’s reflection—a gaze devoid of warmth.
Ming Sian stepped on the gas, and the car speed increased. “Is it so hard to let me go?”
He Yining gave her a look that said “you are so naive.”
“The contract is signed. The He family doesn’t do charity.”
Ming Sian was at a loss for words. It actually was this reason? She thought He Yining was lying to her… no, at least half of it was a lie.
