After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 15
A few days before New Year’s Eve, Shen Sijin received a phone call. The screen showed “Grandma.”
She suddenly remembered that the original owner was orphaned and had been raised by her maternal grandmother, who had been hospitalized for years due to poor health.
She felt a moment of panic. Since she wasn’t the original owner, she was afraid of saying the wrong thing. She answered, her hand trembling.
“Hello, Xiao Jin,” the voice on the other end was old and kind, with a hint of a smile.
“Gr-grandmother,” Shen Sijin wasn’t used to the address. Her own maternal grandparents hadn’t liked her and forbade her from calling them that. The term was foreign to her, making her stutter.
“Ai, good child.” The grandmother’s voice carried the unique affection of an elder. “Have you been very busy these past few days? You haven’t come to see your grandmother.”
Shen Sijin leaned against the window, clutching the phone with both hands, her face flushed with embarrassment, feeling the awkwardness of being an imposter. “…Yes, I’ve been a little busy.”
“It’s almost the New Year. When will you come and see your grandmother?”
Shen Sijin had been so preoccupied with taking care of Che Gulai that she had forgotten it was almost New Year’s Eve.
The old woman’s voice carried earnestness, coupled with the faint weakness of long-term illness. Shen Sijin couldn’t bear to refuse her request and reluctantly said, “Grandmother, I’ll come to see you in a few days.”
“Ai, good, good, good.” The grandmother suddenly sounded happier. “Xiao Jin, no matter how busy you are, you must take care of yourself. Don’t be like your grandmother and ruin your health, or you’ll suffer when you’re older…”
The elder’s care was rambling, but Shen Sijin had never been cared for by an elder in this way. She was a little overwhelmed but unconsciously let herself be absorbed by the attention.
“Yes, I know,” Shen Sijin replied obediently.
After hanging up the phone, her gaze became distant, staring blankly at the bare tree trunks outside.
The call from the original owner’s grandmother was a wake-up call.
Since transmigrating to this world, she had stayed in this remote small town, barely socializing, and mostly keeping company with Che Gulai.
She was a stranger to this world. Apart from Che Gulai, she knew nothing about anything else here. Although she greatly enjoyed it—after all, no one bothered her here, the nightmares were absent, and her days were peaceful and quiet.
But she knew this was only temporary. She couldn’t stay here forever. The original owner had family. Since she had become her, there was no reason to abandon her family.
Furthermore, Che Gulai didn’t want to stay here permanently. She was bound to leave here, and she would leave Shen Sijin too.
She had become accustomed to Che Gulai being by her side during this time. Che Gulai was the only familiar person she had in this strange world, and only by staying near her could she get a good night’s sleep. Che Gulai was also the only person who understood her and didn’t treat her like a psycho. Shen Sijin’s feelings for her were like a straw floating on the ocean surface; she had to cling to this straw.
But the New Year was a time for family reunion. Che Gulai couldn’t accompany her, especially since the original owner was someone she despised, although Shen Sijin wasn’t sure if she still hated the original owner now.
Just thinking about facing this unfamiliar world alone and having to deal with Che Gulai’s departure made her heart feel heavy, a mix of anxiety and melancholy.
In short, it was an unhappy emotion.
After several consecutive days of rain, the weather finally cleared today. Shen Sijin wanted to visit the sea before leaving. The small town was by the coast, and she still hadn’t gone.
But she didn’t want to go alone, so she pleaded with Che Gulai to go with her.
Che Gulai didn’t refuse. Shen Sijin clasped her hands together, looking at her with those clear, lake-like almond eyes, asking softly, “Che Gulai, let’s go together. It’s not far.”
Che Gulai’s attitude toward her had softened a little these past few days. It was no longer the sharp, chilling coldness. Shen Sijin assumed she might have touched Che Gulai a bit, and her behavior became unconsciously relaxed and casual; she constantly behaved coquettishly.
“No,” Che Gulai said, eating green grapes. As Shen Sijin had said, she did indeed love green fruits.
“Don’t be like that,” Shen Sijin pouted, then pleaded softly again, “Let’s go together. You can’t always stay at home. You should go out and walk around, hmm? Che Gulai.”
Shen Sijin’s tone was sweet. The rigid three syllables of “Che Gulai” unexpectedly took on a soft, affectionate quality in her mouth, causing Che Gulai to feel a weird goosebump every time she heard Shen Sijin call her name.
Che Gulai was cold by nature and couldn’t stand anyone being coquettish with her. People around her used to interact with her formally because of her icy personality, unlike Shen Sijin.
She didn’t know if Shen Sijin was thick-skinned or just had an inflated sense of self-worth.
In any case, Shen Sijin would be leaving soon, and she didn’t want any conflict with her right now, or all her previous fake kindness would have been pointless.
Now was not the time to break ties with Shen Sijin.
Seeing that she was about to continue pleading, Che Gulai cut her off. “Fine.”
So, they went after all.
The small town was sparsely populated, and there weren’t many people on the beach. Blue ocean water met an island planted with large fields of white daisies. When the wind blew, it caused a white wave to swell across the flowers.
It was a beautiful sight.
They sat amidst the white daisies, overlooking the blue sea. The water was glistening, and occasionally, waves rolled in.
The sea breeze was also very comfortable. Shen Sijin closed her eyes contentedly.
“How is it? Isn’t it beautiful?” Shen Sijin asked triumphantly, looking at the sea.
She had to admit, it was very beautiful. Che Gulai hummed in acknowledgment.
“I went to the sea once before, but the water was gray then, not like the sea on my phone,” Shen Sijin said slowly, her gaze fixed on the distance. “And the water was very cold.”
Her tone somehow lowered, filled with a sense of vague emptiness.
“Do you go to the seaside often?” Che Gulai asked casually, looking at the white birds above the sea.
“Only once,” Shen Sijin’s tone returned to normal. She said cheerfully, “I didn’t go again after that because the water was too cold.”
Che Gulai didn’t understand what cold water had to do with not going to the sea.
“Do you like the sea?” Che Gulai asked.
“Yes, I do,” Shen Sijin pointed at the sea. “Look, the ocean is immense, capable of embracing every suffering person.”
She was smiling, her expression showing a faint, innocent madness, though it couldn’t be called true madness. It was more like the joyful frenzy of a wandering child who had found a place to belong.
Che Gulai assumed she was having another episode and habitually ignored her raving.
Shen Sijin suddenly asked, “What about you? Do you like the sea?”
Che Gulai immediately replied, “No.”
“Huh?” Shen Sijin was confused. “Why?”
“Because I almost died there once,” Che Gulai said flatly, as if talking about someone else.
