After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 19
As the Lunar New Year approached, Grandmother insisted she didn’t want to spend it in the hospital. Shen Sijin’s persuasion was useless. Seeing that her physical condition was acceptable, she brought her home.
Shen Sijin could no longer remember what it felt like to harmoniously and cheerfully celebrate the Spring Festival with family. She was not a likable child in the past, and whenever such a festival arrived, to avoid being a nuisance, she would deliberately stay in her room for days without coming out.
Shen Sijin craved and enjoyed these days. Her smiles these past few days were far more numerous than usual, and her grandmother laughed happily every day.
As she finished pasting the spring couplets, her phone chimed.
It was a message from Che Gulai.
Since Che Gulai had agreed to reply to Shen Sijin’s messages last time, although their conversations weren’t exactly enthusiastic and she replied hours later, at least Shen Sijin wasn’t performing a solo act anymore.
Shen Sijin’s daily anticipation centered on this. Chatting with Che Gulai was deeply satisfying. Even her cold and brief replies were enough to make Shen Sijin happy.
“Xiao Jin, why are you staring at your phone and smiling so much?” Grandmother had just finished making an apple pie and brought a warm piece for Shen Sijin to eat.
Shen Sijin pursed her lips and smiled brightly. “It’s nothing, really.” She took the apple pie from her grandmother, took a bite, and her eyes sparkled. “It’s delicious.”
“Good, as long as it’s delicious.” Grandmother looked at her lovingly.
She felt her Xiao Jin was much better this way—cheerful and cute, finally acting like a young girl instead of her former silent and gloomy self.
New Year’s Eve finally arrived. Shen Sijin and her grandmother cooked many dishes, and the two happily ate a New Year’s Eve dinner. For them, it was the happiest New Year’s Eve dinner they had ever had.
Fireworks would be set off in Lan City that night, which were very beautiful.
Shen Sijin filmed a video of the fireworks and, like a proud child, sent all the videos to Che Gulai.
[Happy New Year! Che Gulai] She typed and sent it, then eagerly awaited Che Gulai’s reply.
In contrast to Shen Sijin’s warm atmosphere, Che Gulai was still working at home on New Year’s Eve. She had no family and few friends. Bai Yu was abroad. For her, the Spring Festival was no different from any other day.
But her phone kept ringing.
They were mostly New Year greetings from clients and investors. Che Gulai mass-replied to them for convenience. In passing, she saw Shen Sijin’s New Year greeting, didn’t think much of it, and briefly looked past it.
After replying, Che Gulai put down her phone and went back to work.
Shen Sijin received Che Gulai’s reply before going to sleep.
[Happy New Year.]
She lay in bed clutching her phone, tossing and turning. She hadn’t thought Che Gulai would reply to her message, as she surely had countless people wishing her well. Her own greeting probably didn’t count for much.
It was a surprise, and a pleasant one.
It turned out exchanging New Year’s wishes was such a happy thing.
This was the most satisfying Spring Festival she had experienced in over twenty years.
The puppy was bouncing around on the sofa. Shen Sijin lay on the edge of the bed, reaching out to tease the dog.
The puppy immediately licked her palm.
Shen Sijin couldn’t help but think of Che Gulai again.
She thought of Che Gulai’s cold eyes, her pale skin, her dark long hair, and her thin lips.
The fireworks outside were dazzling, illuminating Shen Sijin’s snow-white face, making her look as beautiful and sweet as a rose.
She wondered again if Che Gulai was watching the same fireworks as her right now.
A few days after the New Year, Shen Sijin started school.
The original owner’s major was similar to her previous one, Chemistry. She was now a junior.
She followed her memory to the original owner’s dorm. Four people lived there, but one had moved out this year, so there were only three temporarily.
The original owner’s relationship with her roommates was poor. The other two roommates looked at her coldly, treating her like a stranger.
Shen Sijin didn’t feel distressed. She had experienced similar situations of isolation many times before and was immune to it, so she didn’t find anything amiss.
She quietly packed her things, ignoring the whispering discussion about her behind her back.
Shen Sijin enjoyed university life quite a bit. In her third year before transmigrating, she had suffered severe tinnitus due to her fear of crowds, to the point of near deafness, especially with that woman constantly following her.
She didn’t dare to leave the house, which had started to affect her daily life. Her grandfather, embarrassed by her, had thrown her into the mental hospital.
Now, she was much better and could slowly enjoy the education she hadn’t completed.
Even if no one interacted with her at school, she didn’t mind. She only occasionally messaged Che Gulai when she felt lonely. Che Gulai’s replies were able to alleviate her suffocating loneliness.
At those times, she felt she wasn’t alone.
A few days later, a new person moved into the dorm, a junior from the Communications department.
The girl had smog-blue hair, single eyelids, an elegant face, and a slender figure, giving off an unapproachable vibe.
The blue-haired girl didn’t speak to anyone in the dorm for a few days. Shen Sijin was shy around strangers, so she didn’t speak either.
The blue-haired girl often went out in the evenings and frequently didn’t come back at night. When she returned late, she had lost her key and couldn’t get a new one right away, so she had to rely on her roommates to open the door for her.
The other two roommates found her troublesome and refused to open the door, so Shen Sijin had to do it.
After a few back-and-forths, the girl felt Shen Sijin was nice. One day, she suddenly pulled Shen Sijin out to eat and asked her name.
“Shen Sijin,” Shen Sijin was not good at talking to unfamiliar people, her tone a little nervous.
“Sijin from ‘prosperous future’ (Qian Cheng Si Jin).”
“I’m Bai Mingyu,” the girl said, hooking her arm around Shen Sijin’s and smiling. “Your name has a great meaning. Your parents must have hoped for your future to be bright and prosperous.”
Shen Sijin was about the same height as her, but being held by her, she looked like a timid little rabbit.
Bai Mingyu was lively and passionate. Even with Shen Sijin’s shy and quiet nature, she could maintain a conversation.
The two became close just like that.
Bai Mingyu thought Shen Sijin was like a little white rabbit—cute, well-behaved, and likable—and often sought her out to talk.
Shen Sijin was slowly able to hold normal conversations with her, like two ordinary friends.
“Hey, why are you always looking at your phone?” Bai Mingyu and Shen Sijin were sitting in the school’s milk tea shop. Seeing her constantly staring at her phone, she asked curiously.
“Am I?” Shen Sijin put her phone down as if hiding it, taking a sip of her milk tea to cover her embarrassment.
“Don’t you notice yourself?” Bai Mingyu teased. “Boyfriend?”
“No,” Shen Sijin immediately denied. “Don’t talk nonsense.”
Bai Mingyu found her amusing and flicked her forehead with a finger. “Don’t be shy. We’re adults. Dating isn’t anything to be ashamed of.”
Shen Sijin didn’t know how to defend herself. Her face was red. “No, there isn’t. Don’t guess wildly.”
Bai Mingyu stopped teasing her and burst out laughing.
Shen Sijin secretly checked her phone.
[Che Gulai, why did you suddenly stop replying to my messages?]
It had been two days since she sent the message, but Che Gulai hadn’t replied at all.
We were chatting fine a few days ago, so why is she suddenly ignoring me?
Shen Sijin was melancholy, her heart heavy. She really wanted to go find Che Gulai.
She hadn’t seen her for a long time. She had tried going to her company before to look for her, but she wasn’t there, so Shen Sijin had to give up trying to find her.
She didn’t know what was wrong with her, but she just really missed Che Gulai.
Shen Sijin was supposed to accompany her grandmother today to visit an old friend. Grandmother initially wanted to go alone, but Shen Sijin was worried about her health and insisted on going with her.
Grandmother’s friend lived in an alley in the suburbs. The car couldn’t get through, so the two had to walk.
The area was all steps. Grandmother was clearly frail; she was out of breath after only a few steps.
“Grandmother, are you alright? Do you want to rest a bit?” Shen Sijin asked worriedly.
“No, no need.” Grandmother waved her hand. “It’s an old problem. Let’s hurry. It’s going to rain, and neither of us brought an umbrella.”
Grandmother started walking forward. Shen Sijin couldn’t stop her and could only follow behind.
Slowly, Grandmother began to run out of strength. Shen Sijin was deeply worried and decided to pull her aside to rest for a while.
The moment her hand touched Grandmother’s clothing, Grandmother stumbled on a step and fell forward.
“Grandmother—”
Shen Sijin’s face was horrified. She immediately tried to pull her grandmother back but failed. The old woman fell to the ground. Shen Sijin quickly used her hand to cushion her grandmother’s head, preventing her from hitting the ground.
But Grandmother still passed out, her face pale, her lips blue, as if dead.
Shen Sijin’s mind went blank, her voice trembling. “Grandmother, Grandmother—”
Her thoughts were completely consumed by panic. Reason was snatched away by the scene before her. She was inexplicably reminded of her mother dying right in front of her.
No.
Absolutely no one else can die in front of me.
“Grandmother…” Shen Sijin’s hands were shaking. She wanted to lift her grandmother, but her frail body couldn’t manage it.
“I… I’ll call someone to save you!” Shen Sijin’s throat was terribly dry, and her voice was too shaky to speak clearly.
She shouted for help, but there were many old houses and few people here. She shouted for a long time, but no one responded.
She completely panicked. She even forgot to call an ambulance.
I need to call for help.
Her first instinct was to call Che Gulai. Her fingers trembled, and her vision was blurry. She could barely see the screen.
The phone on the other end kept ringing.
Shen Sijin bit the tender flesh of her fingernail, her eyes terrified.
Pick up the phone quickly.
Pick up the phone quickly.
“Hello.” Finally, the call was answered.
“Che Gulai, help me!” Shen Sijin spoke anxiously, her voice laced with tears.
Che Gulai was in the middle of a discussion with a group of shareholders. She hadn’t initially wanted to answer Shen Sijin’s call, but the phone wouldn’t stop ringing, and Bai Yu suggested she just answer it.
The first thing she heard was Shen Sijin’s desperate and helpless crying.
Che Gulai frowned and signaled to the shareholders that she needed to step out.
“What’s wrong?” Che Gulai asked.
Shen Sijin told her what had happened, her voice shaking. “Che Gulai, what should I do? There’s… no one here, and the location is very remote. I can’t lift Grandmother either. What should I do now?”
Although Che Gulai disliked Shen Sijin, she wasn’t indifferent to an elder’s life. Her tone was calm and steady. “Calm down. First, try to call an ambulance. Send me your location, and I’ll come find you.”
Che Gulai’s clear, calm voice soothed Shen Sijin’s panic. She did as Che Gulai instructed.
Che Gulai hung up the phone and clicked her tongue, thinking that Shen Sijin was really good at causing trouble for her.
It had been a while since they last saw each other. She had thought the person had settled down.
Since a life was at stake, Che Gulai couldn’t complain. She excused herself to the shareholders, grabbed her car keys, and left.
“Hey, do you want me to come with you?” Bai Yu asked.
Che Gulai thought for a moment. “Mhm.”
A light rain began to fall. Shen Sijin was cold all over, like a lifeless puppet.
Che Gulai was fast and quickly reached the location Shen Sijin had sent.
“Che Gulai.” Seeing Che Gulai, Shen Sijin immediately stood up.
Against the light, the woman’s figure was tall and graceful. She was walking toward her, holding a black umbrella.
Shen Sijin felt as if she had found a lifeline, and her frantic heart slowly calmed down.
She stared straight at Che Gulai.
Che Gulai had actually come.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Shen Sijin’s heart began to beat rapidly again.
Bai Yu saw that it was Shen Sijin, and his jaw nearly dropped. He had thought it was some important person that made Che Gulai rush over.
How could it be Shen Sijin?
Bai Yu was utterly shocked, but the priority now was the elderly woman. The ambulance was already outside but couldn’t drive in.
Bai Yu took on the responsibility of carrying the elderly woman.
Shen Sijin was in a daze, following behind Che Gulai.
Her hair was wet, and her eyelashes were dotted with moisture. It was impossible to tell if it was tears or rain.
For the first time, she felt useless.
Panicked, weak, and incompetent.
If it weren’t for Che Gulai, how panicked would she be right now?
Grandmother was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, she hadn’t hit her head. The old woman’s body was weak, and the excessive exertion had caused her to faint.
Overall, there was no fatal problem; she was just unconscious for now.
Shen Sijin let out a long sigh of relief, realizing belatedly that her palms were slick with cold sweat.
The hallway was quiet.
“Che Gulai.” Shen Sijin sat on the bench, looking at her grandmother, and spoke in a low, hoarse voice.
Che Gulai leaned against the wall and hummed in acknowledgment.
“Thank you,” Shen Sijin lowered her eyes. “I’m useless. Thank you for helping me.”
Che Gulai glanced at Shen Sijin’s pale, spiritless face and said nothing.
She had nothing good to say.
If the person lying on the ground had been Shen Sijin, she probably wouldn’t have saved her.
She was fundamentally not a good person; she harbored ill will. This fool probably didn’t even realize how miserable her future would be, yet she was sitting here thanking her.
Che Gulai couldn’t bear this undeserved title of “good person.”
A fool was a fool.
Saving someone insignificant was enough to move her to death.
It was a pretty good deal, too.
“There’s nothing to thank me for,” Che Gulai said, one hand in her pocket. She checked the time. “I’m leaving.”
“Wait a moment.” Shen Sijin grabbed her sleeve.
“What is it?” Che Gulai looked down at her.
Shen Sijin didn’t know why she had called her back. She simply didn’t want Che Gulai to leave.
“Aren’t you going to wait for my grandmother to wake up? She would definitely want to thank you.”
Che Gulai looked at the old, kind woman on the bed, stayed silent for a few seconds, then turned her face away, seemingly unable to face her.
“I have work to do,” Che Gulai said, picking up her bag. “I’m going.”
Che Gulai walked to the underground parking lot, where Bai Yu was already waiting.
“Tell me about it. What’s the deal with Shen Sijin?” Bai Yu asked her as he drove.
“What deal could there be?” Che Gulai supported her forehead, her expression calm.
“Don’t avoid the question,” Bai Yu pressed. “Don’t you despise that woman Shen Sijin the most? What was that just now? She called you for help. Don’t tell me you two have no relationship. Did you see her eyes? They were full of reliance on you.”
Che Gulai opened her eyes, her dark pupils devoid of any color.
“You try to guess,” she said, a hint of an elusive smile on her lips.
That smile only sent a chill down Bai Yu’s spine.
“What are you planning to do to her?” Bai Yu didn’t have any good feelings for Shen Sijin either, but he spoke with the attitude of an observer. “I feel like you’re plotting something malicious.”
“Something fun,” Che Gulai corrected him.
Bai Yu clucked his tongue. “You’re a psycho, too.”
“Oh, right,” Bai Yu changed the subject. “My sister came home recently. I need to spend time with her. Keep an eye on the Zhou Zi matter these next few days.”
“Your sister?” Che Gulai raised an eyebrow. “The one who always used to cause you trouble?”
Bai Yu: “Mhm. That girl dropped out of university in her freshman year, insisted on pursuing music, and fell out with the family. She didn’t come back for years. Now she realizes her mistake and is finally willing to return. I need to educate her. Hey, I’ll introduce you to her someday.”
On the other side, Shen Sijin sat in the hospital, waiting for her grandmother to wake up.
“Grandmother.” Seeing the old woman wake up, Shen Sijin quickly leaned over. “Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?”
“Xiao Jin, your grandmother’s body is failing me,” Grandmother sighed, patting her hand. “I don’t know how much longer I can hold on.”
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Shen Sijin feigned anger.
Grandmother chuckled a few times, then suddenly asked, “Who brought me here?”
“It was my… a friend.”
“That friend of yours is very kind, Xiao Jin. She’s a very good person. Call her to our house sometime. I want to thank her properly.”
Shen Sijin recalled Che Gulai’s figure against the light, and her heart began to thump rapidly again.
She clutched her chest, trying to feel the pounding beneath her ribs.
