After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 4
As usual, Shen Sijin had been awake all night with insomnia. The next day, she looked at herself in the mirror.
Her complexion was pale, dark circles beneath her eyes, and she looked completely listless and dejected.
She took a deep breath, trying to ignore the persistent sense of unease from the night before. There was still a faint, short ringing in her ears. She rubbed them, ignored it, quickly tidied herself up, and went downstairs.
Che Gulai was woken up by hunger. She hadn’t eaten for too long, and her stomach felt very uncomfortable. She wanted to continue sleeping to hide the hollow feeling in her belly.
The next second, the door was knocked, and Shen Sijin’s voice came from outside.
“I’ve made some food. Do you want to come down and eat a bit?”
This was surprising.
This woman hated her so much, she probably wished her dead from starvation, yet she was making her food.
Seeing that she was slow to respond, Shen Sijin opened the door and poked her head in. “You haven’t eaten, have you? Aren’t you hungry?”
“No.” Che Gulai turned her back to her, her voice cold. “Close the door.”
No sooner had she spoken than her stomach growled.
“…”
“I’ll wait for you downstairs,” Shen Sijin said softly and gently, then asked quite considerately, “Do you need me to help you down?”
“…No need.” Che Gulai’s voice grew colder, tinged with annoyance.
“Oh.” Since she said that, Shen Sijin had nothing else to say. She briefly responded, “Then hurry up. The food will get cold.”
Che Gulai eventually came down. She didn’t want to actually starve to death. The kitchen was on the first floor. Although Che Gulai’s leg wasn’t broken, walking was extremely difficult, and she could only limp along.
The short staircase took a great deal of effort. Gritting her teeth, she stepped down one step at a time, almost falling several times.
Shen Sijin was reheating some cold dishes. Seeing Che Gulai, she immediately put down the plate and rushed forward to help her.
“Don’t touch me.” Che Gulai pushed her hand away, her beautiful and delicate eyes cold. Her words were anything but polite. “Stay away from me.”
Shen Sijin awkwardly pulled back her hand and said with a hint of grievance, “I just wanted to help you.”
Che Gulai ignored her and supported herself down the stairs with the railing. Shen Sijin followed her, afraid she might fall.
Unfortunately, the show of strength didn’t last long. Her foot twisted, and she was about to fall face-first. Shen Sijin quickly threw her arms around her waist.
So slender and soft.
This was Shen Sijin’s first reaction.
But the next second, she received Che Gulai’s cold stare. She quickly let go of her hands and defended herself innocently, “I only helped because I saw you fall.”
Che Gulai averted her gaze, said nothing, and limped to the dining table.
Shen Sijin had already served her rice, and the two sat at opposite ends of the table, far apart.
Che Gulai was as cold as ice and not a talkative person. Shen Sijin didn’t dare to speak during the meal. Consequently, the meal was eaten in silence.
Shen Sijin gnawed on her chopsticks, secretly glancing at Che Gulai.
Her dark hair was casually draped over her shoulders. Her eyes were slightly lowered, her eyelashes long and straight. Even with the wound on her forehead, it didn’t obscure her elegance. She was like a beautiful jade carving of ice—cold, graceful, and stunningly beautiful.
Cold and beautiful.
As expected of the female lead, she’s really pretty.
Shen Sijin secretly complimented her in her heart.
Even her manner of eating was slow, graceful, and quiet.
Suddenly, Che Gulai frowned slightly. Shen Sijin’s heart tensed up. Her cooking skills weren’t very good, and she was a little afraid that Che Gulai would despise it.
“What’s wrong?” Shen Sijin asked. “Is it… very unappetizing?”
“Mhm.” Che Gulai was merciless, cold, and heartless.
Shen Sijin pursed her lips, her unhappiness visible. “I’ll slowly improve later.”
Che Gulai wasn’t intentionally deceiving her; Shen Sijin’s cooking was truly strange. Even a simple dish like scrambled eggs with tomatoes was unappetizing.
When she said this, Shen Sijin’s face flushed with shame, and she poked the rice in her bowl. “I’ll make delicious food in the future.”
Che Gulai gave a cold laugh. “Who cares about your future? What does that have to do with me?”
Her appetite was ruined by the food, so she simply stopped eating and slowly drank her water.
“What’s the purpose of cooking for me?” Che Gulai asked casually. “You hate me, don’t you? Why not just let me starve to death?”
Shen Sijin couldn’t eat anymore either. She looked at her. “I’ve said it many times. I want to make up for my past mistakes.”
Che Gulai narrowed her eyes, looking at her as if she were an idiot. “Do you think I’ll believe that? Or do I look like a bleeding-heart saint who’s easily moved?”
“Shen Sijin, what makes you think every mistake can be forgiven? Naive.”
Shen Sijin realized she couldn’t argue with her. She stared at the water in the cup and said, “I’ll prove it to you. Some mistakes can be fixed.”
Her words were mixed with overly foolish naivety. She looked up and smiled at her, her eyes forming two tiny crescents.
“I’ll be very good to you from now on, so you won’t hate me anymore.”
Che Gulai found her smile extremely grating and said coldly, “Can you stop smiling? It’s irritating.”
Shen Sijin’s smile slowly faded, her expression awkward. She touched her earlobe and let out a soft “Oh.”
“You just said you wanted to make amends to me. I want to go back. Can you do that?” Che Gulai said.
“You want to go back?” Shen Sijin’s tone carried unease.
Shen Sijin was worried. If she sent Che Gulai back now, Che Gulai would 100% try to retaliate against her by any means possible. Once she was in Lan City, many things would be out of Shen Sijin’s control. The original owner was an orphan in Lan City. If Che Gulai sought help from the male lead, she definitely wouldn’t have a good outcome. She might end up exactly as the book said: her legs broken and sent to a mental hospital.
She didn’t want the same ending as in that world. She had suffered enough from the dark days in the mental hospital. To turn everything around, she had to win the female lead’s favor.
The male lead would only find this place in a month. She had to use this time to redeem the original owner’s image in Che Gulai’s heart. Therefore, she could not send Che Gulai back yet.
Sending Che Gulai, who utterly hated the original owner, back at this moment would surely lead to her own demise.
Moreover, and most importantly, she knew Che Gulai’s adoptive father was looking for her. This adoptive father was a rotten gambling addict who owed a lot of debt and only ever demanded money from Che Gulai. When Che Gulai refused, the loan sharks cut off three of the adoptive father’s fingers. Driven by anger, the adoptive father wanted revenge on Che Gulai.
Shen Sijin remembered that in the book, during this time, Che Gulai had been taken away by the original owner, thus escaping this ordeal. The adoptive father couldn’t find her and fled abroad to escape the loan sharks.
The adoptive father’s fate later was to be framed by the increasingly powerful Che Gulai and sent to prison, never to see the light of day again.
But now, Che Gulai was covered in injuries. If she returned to Lan City now, there was a high chance her adoptive father would find her, and she would definitely not be his match in her current state.
For all these reasons, Shen Sijin certainly wouldn’t send her back to Lan City right now.
However… if Che Gulai absolutely insisted on returning, she couldn’t stop her either.
She was very conflicted, her face anxious.
Che Gulai stared at her and suddenly said, “Forget it.”
She didn’t want to leave this place for now. This area was remote, and it would take Zhou Zi some time to find her here. Besides, her injuries hadn’t healed. As long as Shen Sijin maintained this attitude and didn’t go crazy—regardless of whether she was sincere or fake—she could at least slowly recover her health.
Che Gulai didn’t want to be in the same space as Shen Sijin for too long.
She stood up, intending to go upstairs.
“Are you full already?” Shen Sijin also stood up. “You’ve only eaten a little bit.”
“It’s unappetizing.” Che Gulai stabbed her with her words, expressionlessly.
“Is it that bad?” Shen Sijin pouted unhappily. “Then what do you want to eat?”
Che Gulai gave a cold laugh. “I want to eat Xue Hua Su (Snowflake Crisps).”
She was doing this on purpose. The economy in this small town was underdeveloped. There were practically no dessert shops, so where would she find Snowflake Crisps?
She was deliberately making things difficult for Shen Sijin.
Indeed, Shen Sijin frowned tightly, clearly finding it very difficult.
The mocking smile at the corner of Che Gulai’s lips grew colder. She turned and tried to walk away, limping.
Shen Sijin stepped forward and supported her. “I’ll buy it for you.”
“Suit yourself.” Che Gulai paid no mind to her words and tried to push her away. “Let go.”
“Don’t be stubborn,” Shen Sijin wasn’t shaken off. Instead, she moved her hand to support her waist. “Your foot is injured; you shouldn’t go upstairs easily. I’ll help you up.”
“False pity.”
Che Gulai acted as if her touch was something inauspicious. “Get lost.”
Shen Sijin sighed softly, her tone light and soft, like a marshmallow. “You are so fierce.”
Che Gulai: “…”
Mentally ill.
