After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 5
It was slightly raining outside today, and the sky was gloomy and very cold. Shen Sijin put on a thick scarf, a black baseball cap, and a face mask, leaving the house fully bundled up.
The original owner’s house was in a remote location, and her car had been taken for repairs, so she had to take a bus. The house was a bit of a distance from the town’s bus stop, and she walked for about twenty minutes to get there.
She was numb with cold the whole way.
There were very few people on the bus. Shen Sijin chose a secluded seat, but after a few minutes, a middle-aged woman came and plopped down next to her.
Shen Sijin felt an unprompted panic. She was actually a bit afraid of strangers, always feeling that everyone looked hateful and wanted to harm her.
She wanted to move, but there were no other seats available on the bus. She had no choice but to sit as far to the side as possible, gazing out the window, with her headphones on and the volume turned all the way up, trying to alleviate her inner anxiety.
She finally got off the bus as if fleeing.
She was in the county today to buy Xue Hua Su (Snowflake Crisps).
Knowing her own terrible cooking skills, and unable to make anything delicious for Che Gulai, she could only go to the county to buy something Che Gulai liked to eat.
The county was much livelier than the small town, with people coming and going.
Shen Sijin looked at the bustling crowd, her body feeling paralyzed and unable to move. It had been over a year since her grandfather had sent her to the mental hospital. Every day, when she opened and closed her eyes, all she saw were pale white walls, indifferent and calm nurses, and formal, businesslike doctors.
Her life was like stagnant water, and she was a fish in it that was about to die.
In those days, she was slowly disconnecting from the world.
Shen Sijin’s vision slowly twisted. Everyone’s face morphed into the grotesque, laughing masks of clowns, all grinning as they looked at her.
The constant buzzing in her ears started up again, making her extremely annoyed.
Shen Sijin fiercely rubbed her ears. As the noise gradually disappeared, she gritted her teeth, took a deep breath, pulled down the brim of her hat, ignored the fear in her heart, and walked toward the crowd.
She went into a dessert shop. Since she didn’t know what flavor of Snowflake Crisp Che Gulai liked, she picked a few of every kind.
After paying, the cashier handed the packaged Snowflake Crisps to Shen Sijin. Just as Shen Sijin was about to take them, her gaze fell on the cashier’s hands. They wore a diamond ring with a snowflake cutout.
A pair of hands wearing the same style of ring appeared in her memory. Those hands had once choked her neck, slapped her face, and pushed her down the stairs.
Shen Sijin’s pupils contracted sharply, and various unfamiliar noises erupted in her ears.
“She’s going to kill you.”
“Hurry up and leave.”
“No, you kill her.”
“You’re going to die.”
One sound after another, like mechanical noises sputtering out, creating an endless, seamless clamor.
Her ears were practically bursting.
She couldn’t hear anything else.
“Customer?”
“Miss?”
The dessert in front of Shen Sijin suddenly turned into a bloody knife. She let out an uncontrollable scream, her hands fumbling, knocking over the Snowflake Crisps in the cashier’s hands.
The dessert shop instantly fell silent.
The cashier looked utterly bewildered.
Shen Sijin was breathing heavily, her eyes wide with terror, helpless and panicked, cold sweat dripping down her forehead.
Her gaze swept over the cashier’s face, and only belatedly realized her loss of composure. A wave of shame quickly washed over her pale face.
“I’m sorry.” She bowed apologetically, her voice trembling softly, like a light cotton fabric. “I didn’t hold onto it properly.”
“Ah, it’s okay.” The cashier, startled by her scream, replied awkwardly. “I’ll get you a new one.”
Shen Sijin paid double the price and left the shop under the bewildered stares of the crowd.
She fled outside and sat on a long bench on the street, covering her face with her hands, as if too ashamed to be seen.
The face beneath her mask was flushed red with shame and embarrassment.
I really shouldn’t have gone out today.
She thought.
After all the commotion, Shen Sijin finally returned home. Just as she reached the doorstep, she noticed a suspicious man lurking near the entrance.
“Uncle, can I help you?” Shen Sijin asked.
The man jumped in surprise, scratched the back of his head, and gave a strange laugh. “Ah, nothing, my dog is lost. I’m looking for him.”
“Did you find him?” Shen Sijin asked seriously.
“Not yet, he probably went home, haha.” After saying that, the man quickly walked away.
Shen Sijin watched his receding back, finding him increasingly strange. She didn’t dwell on it, opened the door, and walked inside, heading straight upstairs to Che Gulai’s room.
“Che Gulai, I bought you Snowflake Crisps.” The door to Che Gulai’s room wasn’t closed, so she walked right in and placed the beautifully packaged crisps on the bedside table.
“I didn’t know what flavor you liked, so I bought a few of each.” She looked at Che Gulai like a child looking for praise, her eyes sparkling, vividly clear, and gazing at her obediently.
Che Gulai was a bit slow to react to that gaze. She suddenly realized that Shen Sijin, this lunatic, had actually bought her Snowflake Crisps.
She had only mentioned it in passing and had absolutely no expectation that Shen Sijin would actually do it. Yet, in only a day or two, she had actually gone and bought them.
Seeing Che Gulai not speaking, Shen Sijin started introducing the flavors to her.
“This is strawberry, this is hawthorn, and this one is raspberry… Which one do you want to eat?”
Che Gulai followed her voice to the crisps. Her gaze shifted, catching sight of Shen Sijin’s hands.
Both hands were bright red, even slightly swollen. Her hands were visibly shaking from the cold as she earnestly introduced the flavors to her.
Che Gulai couldn’t help but look at her face.
Her sweet little face was pale from the cold, bloodless. Her lips were tinged with blue, her nose was red, making her small, palm-sized face look even more starkly white. She sniffled occasionally, giving the impression of frailty, as if she might faint any second.
This person, who is so afraid of the cold, went all the way to the county just because of a casual remark.
She’s crazy.
Shen Sijin hadn’t opposed her these past few days. Previously, as soon as Shen Sijin saw her, she would employ all sorts of sinister methods against her. Logically, this perfect opportunity would be enough for her to torment her ten or a hundred times, but she hadn’t done so. Instead, she was treating her well with good food and drink.
She was like a completely different person.
Che Gulai couldn’t understand what kind of madness she was suffering from.
Shen Sijin went on talking by herself but received no response, feeling a bit confused. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
“What am I supposed to say?” Che Gulai’s tone was indifferent. “Do you want me to thank you?”
“Not exactly,” Shen Sijin said, her expression very serious. “When I talk to you, you should answer me. You haven’t answered a word I’ve said, and that’s very impolite.”
Che Gulai: “…”
Why does she feel like she’s being lectured by a child?
“I can’t be bothered to talk to you,” Che Gulai said flatly. She didn’t even glance at the Snowflake Crisps and turned to face away from her. “I didn’t ask you to buy them.”
Shen Sijin hadn’t expected the female lead to be like this. She sat on the edge of the bed and forcefully turned Che Gulai’s body to face her, saying unhappily, “Why are you like this?”
Che Gulai was extremely annoyed. Her exquisite features were cold and frosty. She pressed her thin lips together, watching her with displeasure, wondering what kind of fit she was going to throw now.
Shen Sijin flinched when their eyes met, but quickly felt that she wasn’t in the wrong, and her courage returned.
“I took a long bus ride to buy them for you, just because you said you wanted to eat them,” Shen Sijin’s voice was naturally soft and cottony, as if she had a marshmallow in her mouth, which made her unhappy tone sound soft and completely unaggressive.
Che Gulai replied with a cold “Oh.” “So?”
Feeling like she had wasted all her words on a mute person, Shen Sijin was furious. She pointed at her. “You…”
Che Gulai seemed to be made of ice, without a hint of expression.
Cool, unaffected, and dead silent.
