- After the Maniacal Alpha Settled Down, She Had a Wife and Daughter
- Chapter 10 - The Rival
Yu Sui knew Chu Jiayun was waiting for her. Despite her reluctance, her half-steps eventually led her outside Chu Jiayun’s office. The office was mostly empty on Sundays, with only Instructor Chu’s door open.
On the way, Yu Sui had decided to change her strategy. Over the weekend, not only did Yu Mu show concern, but even their father, who rarely said anything heartfelt, asked about her recent feelings. It seemed everyone had noticed her change.
She recalled Chu Jiayun’s deep eyes that seemed to see right through people. This made her feel even more like she was outmatched. Since she couldn’t pretend, she might as well give up and try a new approach.
After a deep breath to mentally prepare herself, she gave a perfunctory knock on the door. Chu Jiayun was looking at her last test paper. She looked up, gave a slight smile, and gestured for her to come in.
“Instructor Chu, should I close the door?”
“If you’d like, of course.”
Yu Sui turned, held the door, and took a deep breath. She gently closed the door. Chu Jiayun wouldn’t lay a hand on her at the base, and she hadn’t even confirmed Yu Sui’s identity yet, so there was no need to panic.
When she turned around after closing the door, Yu Sui’s expression was calm and composed.
“I called you here today to primarily talk about your performance in the psychological endurance assessment.”
Yu Sui glanced at the paper in her hand. There were many annotations on it, but she couldn’t make out the content.
“Don’t worry about that for now. I’ll let you take it home with you.”
Yu Sui straightened up, pulled her gaze back, and waited for Chu Jiayun to begin.
It was Sunday, and neither of them was in their uniform. Chu Jiayun was wearing a beige casual suit with a pure white V-neck cotton shirt underneath. The neckline wasn’t low, but the outline of her collarbones was still eye-catching.
Yu Sui knew she was looking at her to confirm how well Chu Jiayun was disguising herself today, but her gaze lingered around the V-neck. Then, she was horrified to find that her throat felt a little itchy.
It wasn’t obvious, but Yu Sui still felt a little panicked. She wasn’t sure if this was a symptom before differentiation. She quickly looked away, coughed a few times, and when she looked up again, there were two tissues in front of her.
“The change of seasons. You should take care of yourself.”
Through the tissues, Yu Sui saw her shiny nails and her slender, fair fingers. She coughed heavily again and quickly took the tissues, pressing them tightly against her mouth.
“I’m sorry, that was rude of me.”
Chu Jiayun saw that her face was red. She got up and poured her a glass of water: “You don’t need to be so formal in front of me. You didn’t do anything wrong, so you don’t need to apologize.”
Her tone was calm and her voice was clear, but it still made people relax. Yu Sui drank the water and calmed down, noticing that there was no scent of essential oils in the office today.
“What did you learn from the last psychological endurance course?”
Fortunately, Chu Jiayun got straight to the point. Yu Sui tried to stick to her new strategy.
She deliberately replied absent-mindedly, “It was similar to other classes. Nothing special.”
“Nothing, good or bad, left a deep impression on you?”
Yu Sui reluctantly thought about it: “The bad part was that it was scheduled after physical training. People were tired, and it was hard to control our emotions. The good part was that you didn’t go over time, and you let us go back to shower and eat after we handed in our papers.”
Chu Jiayun’s pen stopped. Yu Sui saw her take two noticeable deep breaths. She probably didn’t expect a student to give an answer like that. Anyone who was called in for a one-on-one talk was a promising prospect. Who wouldn’t want to perform better and get a good review from the instructor?
Yu Sui was happy inside, but she tried her best to maintain a serious expression, pretending to be honest and innocent.
“Your score was good. I also paid attention to your performance during the test. You maintained your emotions and mindset very well.”
Yu Sui didn’t expect to be praised for that. She just took the compliment shamelessly: “Maybe I’m just a big-hearted person. I didn’t see it as a test. I just wanted to finish it as fast as possible.”
Chu Jiayun’s pen lightly tapped the paper twice: “Excellent. That’s exactly the mindset that the psychological endurance training is designed to cultivate. Focus on your goal, don’t be distracted by other factors, and do what you’re supposed to do. The result will naturally not be too bad.”
Yu Sui just smiled. She felt like Chu Jiayun was being particularly generous with her praise today.
“These questions don’t have standard answers. As long as you can justify your reasoning, I’ll pass you. I made some notes and additions to some of your views and opinions. You can take it home and read through it.”
Yu Sui took the paper. Chu Jiayun’s handwriting was sharp and powerful, not at all like what she would expect from the beautiful woman in front of her. Yet, it was inexplicably fitting.
“I called you here today not only to talk about the assessment but also to talk about your emotional state.”
She had just said that Yu Sui had good emotional control, and now she wanted to talk about it? Yu Sui folded the test paper and held it in her hand, guessing what she would say next.
“You’re very nervous. You’ve been like this since you arrived at the base, so you chose to evade.”
Yu Sui instinctively lowered her gaze, thinking of a countermeasure.
But Chu Jiayun wasn’t as gentle and calm as before. Her voice became firm and powerful, with a hint of hardness: “Yu Sui, look at me.”
Yu Sui had to meet her gaze. Unlike what Chu Jiayun had expected, Yu Sui’s eyes weren’t panicked but helpless.
Chu Jiayun was slightly stunned. Then she said: “Are you feeling uneasy because of the subtle physical changes you’re experiencing before differentiation? Or are you just not used to this new state in your life?”
Yu Sui thought for a moment and gave a small nod.
“A little. I feel like every day is so new.”
Instead of getting angry, Chu Jiayun was happy: “And that’s why I’m here at the base.”
Hearing her mention the word “why,” Yu Sui suddenly stared at her neck. Perhaps surprised by this, both of them were taken aback.
Yu Sui immediately looked away. Chu Jiayun reminded herself that she was an Alpha now and that she didn’t need to be afraid of a student who hadn’t differentiated yet. She had only used a very small dose of an inhibitor today because long-term, excessive use was harmful to the body, and most of the students she would encounter today were not aggressive.
Chu Jiayun quickly composed herself and continued in her sincere instructor tone: “Every student who comes to the base faces this confusing and difficult stage. This is the most special time of your life and when you need help the most.
So, Yu Sui, don’t run away anymore. Let me and the other instructors help you, okay?”
She spoke with extreme sincerity. Her voice was calm and gentle, as if it could soothe any restless heart instantly. If she didn’t know Chu Jiayun’s true purpose, Yu Sui might have believed her at this moment.
Since Instructor Chu had already said so much, Yu Sui could only show her gratitude on the outside while constantly reminding herself not to fall for it. She then slowly retreated until she was safely out of the tiger’s den.
Every time she came here, she had to break into a sweat. Just then, Sheng Nanxi called. This was the task she had given her earlier.
“A Sui, what’s your situation? Can you come back?
“I’m already on my way back.”
Sheng Nanxi was surprised: “That fast? I thought it would take a long time.”
Only then did Yu Sui realize that she had also expected to be held up by Chu Jiayun for a long time, which was why she had told Sheng Nanxi to call her in half an hour to use it as an excuse to leave. She didn’t expect the exhausting battle of wits to only last for twenty minutes.
**
Thanks to Sheng Nanxi and Cai Sijia’s thorough preparation and outstanding abilities, Yu Sui didn’t get to go one-and-done in the debate competition. Fortunately, the semifinals were a week away. But the optional competition was something she couldn’t avoid.
“A Sui, what are you going to choose for the optional competition tomorrow?”
“Jump rope.”
Sheng Nanxi scrolled up and down with her mouse a few times but couldn’t find “jump rope”: “Are you messing with me?”
She raised her hand to hit Yu Sui, but her swing wasn’t very powerful, so Yu Sui didn’t bother to dodge.
“I’m serious. What are you going to choose? I’m going to choose the same thing as you so we can practice together.”
The list of options was all highly competitive sports. Sheng Nanxi’s build looked a bit iffy for them.
“Kickboxing.”
Sheng Nanxi didn’t expect Yu Sui to choose this and hesitated to click “confirm”: “I heard it hurts to get hit.”
Yu Sui didn’t care: “I heard from the last group that it’s just two people practicing with each other. You’re not very strong, so it won’t hurt when you hit me.”
Sheng Nanxi bit her lip in protest: “What if it hurts when you hit me?”
“When have I ever hit you?”
Sheng Nanxi thought about it carefully. She hadn’t. Not only had Yu Sui never hit her, but she had even used her fists to chase away some harassers. Their friendship had been built and strengthened through their mutual help.
But the next day, after they finished practicing kickboxing, the instructor in charge of the training suddenly said that the rules had changed this year. They had added an inter-group competition. This meant each pair would send one person to compete, and opponents would be chosen through a lottery.
Of course, the boys’ group and the girls’ group were separate. Even so, Yu Sui’s luck was still terrible because she drew the original owner’s rival from college, the president of the Taekwondo club, You Min.
Sheng Nanxi frowned and quietly advised Yu Sui, “Let’s just forfeit. You’ll definitely be at a disadvantage fighting her.”
Yu Sui didn’t care about the grade. If Sheng Nanxi also didn’t care about the score, she would have forfeited. But since her opponent was You Min, she felt like she couldn’t give up so easily.
The reason the original owner became her rival was because she had harassed Sheng Nanxi several times, and when she didn’t get a response, she started spreading rumors behind her back that Sheng Nanxi was a wimp and would be an Omega for sure.
Seeing You Min’s smug look, a surge of blood and strength rose uncontrollably within Yu Sui.
She refused Sheng Nanxi’s suggestion: “Let’s fight. Who’s afraid of her?”
