- After the Maniacal Alpha Settled Down, She Had a Wife and Daughter
- Chapter 17 - Heart-to-Heart
Yu Sui reluctantly got off the bay window, having already heard the maid downstairs greeting Chu Jiayun. She tugged at the hem of her clothes a few times and then picked up the cosmetic mirror on the table to check herself carefully. She walked over to the door before it was even knocked on.
She just stood silently behind the door, not rushing to open it. She waited for Chu Jiayun to knock a few times and wait a moment before leisurely opening the door.
Yu Sui poked her head out from behind the door and smiled: “Instructor Chu, you’re so early.”
Chu Jiayun smiled faintly: “Early? It’s already two hours later than when you were at the base.”
Yu Sui gestured for her to come in and quietly closed the door: “I thought you finally had a chance to rest, and you still had to come and tutor me. I would be too embarrassed if you came too early.”
Chu Jiayun put down her bag in the same spot where she sat last time and said seriously: “I just adjusted the class time. Today is Friday, but I am not resting, so now is still my time to provide help to students.”
Yu Sui saw that she was in a state where she could start working at any moment, so she reluctantly shuffled over. When she was at home, she liked to wear loose, casual clothes. Today, she was wearing a pair of gray cotton sweatpants and a dark blue pullover hoodie. Her hair barely covered her ears, and after a little tidying up, it no longer looked so unconventional.
“No need to be nervous. There is no test or assessment today, just a routine follow-up.”
Yu Sui pretended to be relaxed: “Actually, your class is the one I’m least afraid of.”
Chu Jiayun took out a folder and a pen from her bag. Hearing Yu Sui’s words, she raised an eyebrow: “Is that so? I thought you would be most afraid of my class.”
“Who would be so blind? It’s certainly not me.”
Chu Jiayun didn’t bother to figure out how much truth was in her words and lowered her head to scan the contents of the file. In fact, she was very familiar with Yu Sui’s information, and she could still conduct her work normally even if she hadn’t brought the file today.
“You can choose a comfortable way to sit. I don’t mind if you lie down or stand up.”
Yu Sui said she was relaxed, but she was sitting ramrod straight with her hands on her knees. No one would believe her if she said she wasn’t nervous.
“Then I’ll really be casual?” After saying that, Yu Sui leaned back on the sofa, clutching a throw pillow.
In Yu Zhongqing’s words, this was “lacking image.”
“Can you tell me what you’ve been doing at home these past few days?”
Yu Sui thought for a moment: “Basically, a cycle of eating, drinking, and sleeping. I also called Sheng Nanxi a few times to chat.”
“Do you feel bored?”
“Not really. I’m injured, so if I run outside, my family will definitely worry.”
“It seems you care a lot about what they think.”
Yu Sui wanted to say that it was because she was afraid of being nagged, but she changed her answer after meeting Chu Jiayun’s gaze: “I do care.”
Afterward, she thought to herself, as an orphan, she actually looked forward to having family members who would nag her when she was a child. At least it represented a little concern and care. Unfortunately, when she grew up, she felt that she didn’t need it anymore.
Chu Jiayun asked a few more irrelevant questions, but Yu Sui’s answers were more perfunctory. There wasn’t much difference between saying them and not saying them. Even Yu Sui felt guilty, wondering how Instructor Chu could still listen to such answers.
Chu Jiayun didn’t show much reaction until she finished recording. She suddenly put down the pen and paper: “The required content has been covered. Now let’s talk about something else.”
Yu Sui was confused but could see the obviously more relaxed expression on Chu Jiayun’s face.
“What do you want to talk about?”
Chu Jiayun leaned back, adopting an equally relaxed posture. She was wearing pants today, so she felt more at ease than her previous visit.
“Just casual talk, like chatting with a friend. You can say anything you want.”
Yu Sui thought for a moment and smiled: “Instructor Chu, are you trying to slack off?”
Chu Jiayun’s smile was not as obvious as hers, but it wasn’t fake: “The required part is finished. Now it’s the free-play stage.”
Yu Sui actually wanted to know the details of Chen Yinian’s situation, but Sheng Nanxi couldn’t explain it clearly, Yu Mu was too busy, and she wasn’t familiar with Bai Jiling, so she didn’t dare to ask her directly.
“Instructor Chu, can you tell me about Chen Yinian?”
“He has already started treatment, and his condition is not good.”
Yu Sui shifted to a more comfortable position, almost lying on the sofa: “Does differentiating into a Beta really shock people that much? In fact, ordinary people are the majority in this world, but it seems that many people can’t accept that they are actually very ordinary.”
Chu Jiayun was silent for a while: “The result of differentiation represents the role played in society after adulthood, and the differences in these roles mean that the resources, status, and even the way others treat them are different. It’s not wrong to be ordinary, but it’s also not wrong to not want to be mediocre.”
Yu Sui was more interested in this topic, and her enthusiasm for the conversation was much higher than before. Chu Jiayun took in Yu Sui’s small movements but didn’t say a word.
“I think the expectations of the family are too high, so Chen Yinian never considered what would happen if he became a Beta, or maybe he simply didn’t dare to think about what he could do in the future as an ordinary person.”
Yu Sui frowned. This kind of pressure existed among all the students in this batch. Being born into a good family was certainly an advantage, but sometimes, this advantage could also bring pressure with no way out.
She remembered Sheng Nanxi’s frequent absentmindedness in the dorm, her father’s relief when he learned she could go to the base for training, and Yu Mu’s nervousness and concern about her emotional fluctuations before differentiation.
The curtains were fully open today, and the sunlight outside was just as good as that day. Yu Sui didn’t wear sunglasses and was no longer afraid of the strong light. She rested her elbow on the sofa, talking about this helplessness and reality in a tone much more mature than her age.
The sunlight shone on her face, concealing many of her facial features, but it made Chu Jiayun feel Yu Sui’s authenticity for the first time.
Yu Sui saw that she hadn’t responded, so she turned her face to ask for her opinion, only to find that Chu Jiayun had been staring at her.
Yu Sui licked her lips and sat up again: “I’m used to being casual at home.”
Chu Jiayun didn’t show any panic, as if it was perfectly natural for her to look at Yu Sui: “Stress is a part of modern life, and very few people can be completely unaffected. But stress is not a reason to hurt others, and that’s why I am at the base.”
“Then do you, Instructor Chu, feel a lot of stress? You have to face so many people with bad moods every day. Don’t you feel more annoyed?”
“Everyone has stress, and I am no exception. But when I see those people who can successfully resolve their stress because of my help or intervention, my own stress is also greatly reduced.”
Yu Sui knew that she was still holding back some of her thoughts, but she still heard a lot of sincerity in her words. Chu Jiayun was indeed serious about helping the students. No wonder Yu Mu still spoke of her fondly years after graduation.
“Then do you hate Chen Yinian?”
Yu Sui expected Chu Jiayun to say something cliché, but she admitted what was on her mind: “If I had fallen and been seriously injured that day, I would definitely hate him. Because I am not a saint, and I don’t want to suppress my angry emotions.”
She looked at Yu Sui’s stunned expression, smiled slightly, and continued: “But because of you, I avoided this tragedy, so now I am very relieved and grateful. My hatred for Chen Yinian is less than my sympathy for him.”
Yu Sui touched her face in embarrassment: “You changed the topic so quickly.”
“I am just answering your question truthfully.”
The atmosphere between the two became increasingly relaxed, much better than when they were seriously discussing her psychological state before.
Yu Sui thought this was a good opportunity. It was rare for Chu Jiayun to be willing to talk about her true feelings. If she could ask more about her life, she might be able to find out the real reason why she disguised herself and snuck into the base to look for the SS-class Alpha.
Although the original book kept saying that Chu Jiayun’s purpose for finding the original owner was to remove her gland, the two had no personal grudges. After spending time with her, Yu Sui felt that Instructor Chu wasn’t that bad.
This made her want to figure out the truth for the first time, rather than just wanting to stay away. After all, in the current situation, she couldn’t escape even if she wanted to.
“What about your family, Instructor Chu? Do they usually put a lot of pressure on you to do things you don’t like but they want you to do?”
Chu Jiayun was alerted. She secretly looked at Yu Sui a few more times. She saw that she still had the same expression as before, seemingly still immersed in the rare sense of ease and comfort.
Family? She only had her sister left, but it could no longer be called a complete family.
“My parents left very early. Rather than saying the pressure came from my family, I’d say the pressure from society was greater.”
Yu Sui didn’t expect them to have this in common. She wanted to tell Chu Jiayun that she was the same.
Chu Jiayun smiled and shook her head: “What I said is a bit abstract. You probably can’t understand it yet.”
Everything was normal in Yu Sui’s room today, and Chu Jiayun didn’t feel any strange reaction in her body. It was only before leaving that she suddenly smelled the faint scent of ebony again.
Yu Sui was walking behind her to see her out. She was startled by Chu Jiayun’s sudden stop and almost bumped into her.
“Instructor Chu, did you forget something?”
Chu Jiayun looked sideways at her: “I’m just curious where the scent of ebony is coming from?”
Yu Sui picked up a bottle of perfume from the cabinet next to the door: “Are you talking about this?”
Then she generously handed it to Chu Jiayun: “I just opened it. If you like it, it’s yours.”
