- Chapter 18 - An Excuse
Giving Chu Jiayun a gift, especially one that had already been used, was something that anyone who had more contact with Chu Jiayun would never do.
Although Yu Sui was an orphan, she hadn’t developed a stingy nature. It was just that she didn’t usually have the means to buy things she liked whenever she wanted. Now that she could easily get them, she was more willing to share.
Chu Jiayun lowered her head and looked at the object that had suddenly appeared in her hand. She was familiar with the brand and had a few other scents at home, but not the ebony one.
“Do you usually use this one?”
Yu Sui nodded: “Yes. I went shopping with Nanxi and Ding Yan last time and tried a few popular scents. I found this one the most appealing.”
Chu Jiayun’s thumb subconsciously rubbed the packaging box a few times, as if hesitating whether to accept it.
Yu Sui thought she was embarrassed to accept gifts from a student and persuaded her: “I’ve already opened this. Strictly speaking, it’s not a gift.”
Chu Jiayun looked up at her upon hearing this. Yu Sui was smiling, as if she really hoped she would accept it.
“So Instructor Chu, you don’t have to worry. This is definitely not secretly accepting a gift and won’t violate any rules.”
That wasn’t what Chu Jiayun was thinking, but since Yu Sui had said it, she didn’t want to explain.
“Alright, I owe you another favor.”
The fact that Instructor Chu actively asked about the ebony scent indicated that she was indeed very interested. For Yu Sui, perfume could be bought at any time. She wasn’t stingy enough to not part with a bottle of perfume.
Of course, she had other plans in mind. She wanted to use Chu Jiayun’s name to go out for some fresh air.
She was so bored staying at home. She only had a hand injury, but her father and sister were treating her as if she were severely disabled, afraid that she would be blown away by the wind or crushed by a crowd if she went out. Now her only hope was Chu Jiayun. If she agreed, Yu Sui’s chances of going out for a stroll would be much higher.
Chu Jiayun got into her car, rummaged through it for a sealed bag, and put the perfume inside. The thick cardboard packaging blocked the scent very well. Chu Jiayun thought the source of the ebony scent was the residue in the room’s air or on Yu Sui’s clothes.
In the evening, she called Bai Jiling to report on Yu Sui’s recent situation.
“Since her hand hasn’t fully recovered, let her continue to rest at home. I apologize for the trouble of having to tutor her specially every week.”
Headmaster Li personally approved this matter. Bai Jiling didn’t want to offend the Yu family, but she also felt bad for Chu Jiayun’s hard work.
“It’s much easier than I thought.” Chu Jiayun looked at the perfume on the table and asked Bai Jiling for a favor, “I have something that I’d like to have analyzed at Uncle Bai’s lab. Can you pull some strings for me?”
“What’s so special about it?”
“Perfume.”
Bai Jiling was surprised: “You want a lab to analyze perfume?”
Chu Jiayun didn’t say she got it from Yu Sui. She didn’t want to cause unnecessary misunderstandings before the matter was confirmed: “I think the new scent is nice, but I’m not sure if it’s suitable for me to use right now.”
Bai Jiling immediately realized that Chu Jiayun was worried about side effects with the strong inhibitor.
“I’ll call my uncle tomorrow and ask him to arrange it as soon as possible.”
The results came back quickly. It was just an ordinary perfume, and the ingredients were not much different from other perfumes. Chu Jiayun looked at the analysis results on her phone, opened the perfume bottle, and sniffed it closely.
It was indeed the smell of ebony, but it wasn’t the scent that made her agitated and restless that day. If this was just an ordinary perfume, why did she have such a strong reaction that day?
**
Yu Mu came home late that day due to an important meeting. Hearing that Yu Sui hadn’t kept Chu Jiayun for dinner, she couldn’t help but say she was thoughtless.
“Sis, Instructor Chu made it clear last time that she didn’t want to eat at home. The result would have been the same if I had asked again this time.”
Yu Mu glared at her: “Whether she accepts is one thing. Whether we ask is another. This at least represents the attitude of our Yu family. Besides, she specially came to tutor you. Are you just going to say thank you and be done with it?”
It was one thing for Yu Sui to be naughty and willful when she was a child. Now that she was about to differentiate and enter society, it wouldn’t be good if she remained so self-centered. Yu Mu was also considering finding an opportunity to help her sister correct these shortcomings and stop causing trouble like before.
“I wasn’t completely ungrateful. I gave her the new perfume I just bought.”
Yu Mu was stunned, clearly disbelieving: “Instructor Chu would accept your perfume?”
Yu Sui lightly patted the cabinet next to the door: “It’s usually kept here. You’ve seen it before.”
Yu Mu glanced at it. It was true.
She rubbed her temples, unable to figure out why, but she emphasized the main point: “Since you know Instructor Chu likes it, you should prepare more.”
Yu Sui laughed: “She definitely won’t take too much. Besides, even if you give her a box, she won’t finish it. Is she going to use it as an air freshener?”
“You always have all sorts of excuses when I ask you to do something.” Yu Mu was helpless against her sister’s “nonsense.” However, after staying in Yu Sui’s room for a while, the ebony scent was quite strong.
“Don’t talk about Instructor Chu. I think you’re already using the perfume as an air freshener.”
“Sis, don’t falsely accuse me. I’m not that wasteful.”
Yu Mu gestured around her: “The air is full of the smell of ebony. After smelling it for a long time, I’m starting to feel a little dizzy.”
Perhaps it was because she was tired from work or genuinely feeling dizzy from the smell, Yu Mu left quickly.
After she left, Yu Sui’s expression became serious. She had already given the perfume to Chu Jiayun, and she didn’t have any other identical scents here. Yu Sui opened her wardrobe, poked her head in, and sniffed, but there was no strong smell.
So why did her sister say she felt dizzy as if it were true?
Yu Sui had a faint guess, but she didn’t give up. She took a hot bath. To verify her idea, she deliberately didn’t use shower gel and only rinsed repeatedly with hot water.
When she changed into a new set of clothes, she rushed straight to Yu Mu’s room.
Yu Mu, who had just recovered, was startled by her. Seeing that her hair was still semi-dry, she casually grabbed a towel and continued to dry her hair: “Your hand is inconvenient, yet you shower so many times a day. You’re not even going out, so you don’t have to be so particular.”
Yu Sui pursed her lips and didn’t speak, deliberately moving a little closer.
Yu Mu continued to nag while drying her hair: “You rushed to spray perfume before drying your hair after showering. When did you develop this habit?”
Yu Sui suddenly asked: “Sis, do you think this smell is nice?”
“Your room has been smelling like this lately. What does it matter whether I think it’s nice or not?”
Suddenly, the towel in Yu Mu’s hand was taken away, and Yu Sui’s figure quickly disappeared.
“Sis, I’m going back to my room to blow-dry my hair.”
Back in her room, Yu Sui was in no mood to blow-dry her hair. She raised her hands and sniffed them. There was indeed the smell of ebony. She realized that what Chu Jiayun asked before leaving was not about the perfume but her own scent.
Her eyes changing color and her body starting to release a scent proved that she had begun to differentiate. No matter how unwilling Yu Sui was to face it, she couldn’t stop the arrival of this day.
When she came to her senses, she immediately placed a frantic online order, buying almost a whole box of ebony-scented perfume.
“Forget it. If all else fails, I’ll use it as an air freshener. I’ll even spray the toilet with it.” Yu Sui muttered as she paid. The beauty representative from the store immediately contacted her.
“May I ask if you are buying this large quantity of perfume for personal use, Miss Yu? Our brand has regulations that all retailers need to apply for authorization.”
“It’s all for personal use, and it’s urgent. Please ship it as soon as possible.”
It was Friday again. Yu Sui looked at the thin gauze on her hand and skillfully wiggled her fingers. In fact, it was almost completely healed, but her family was still worried. Now she was looking forward to Chu Jiayun’s arrival.
Sure enough, after discussing the usual questions, Yu Sui proactively made a request before Chu Jiayun could even speak.
Hearing her beating around the bush, Chu Jiayun could tell that her desire to go out was very strong, and she couldn’t help but tease her: “You want to go out?”
“Yes, I’m going to get moldy at home.”
“Your family will worry.”
Yu Sui held up her hand in front of Chu Jiayun: “It’s actually been healed for a long time. They just don’t think I am. Instructor Chu, you are the person who respects objective facts the most. You’ll definitely be happy to help me, right?”
Chu Jiayun shook her head. Yu Sui was astonished, probably not expecting Instructor Chu to reject even this request.
She couldn’t help but point outside the window: “It’s rare to have such good weather. The spring flowers are blooming. It’s a waste of life not to go out for a walk.”
Chu Jiayun pursed her lips, holding back a smile. She listened to Yu Sui enumerate the various “reasons” why she would lose out if she didn’t go out, and finally interrupted her.
“This is training time. I definitely can’t agree to you skipping class to go out, but we can have another form of psychological guidance outdoors.”
Yu Sui understood that this essentially meant yes and immediately went to grab her jacket. When she made a large movement, the strong scent of ebony rushed straight into Chu Jiayun’s face.
But this time, the perfume scent was too strong. It was so irritating that she even wanted to sneeze.
Chu Jiayun took her to the city center. The place she was usually tired of visiting now gave her a sense of sudden encounter and emotion. Yu Sui didn’t ask what kind of guidance they would be doing there, and Chu Jiayun didn’t mention it either.
The two of them strolled casually, just like everyone else on the road, aimless but feeling relaxed.
After walking for more than half an hour, Yu Sui finally got enough free air and pointed to a milk tea shop not far away: “Instructor Chu, I’ll treat you to milk tea.”
