- Chapter 21 - Getting Closer
Bai Jiling drove very fast the entire way. Very few people were heading from the city to the base at this hour, and although the road was clear, everyone still felt a sense of heaviness. She briefly relayed the information from the phone call and then frowned, remaining silent.
Chu Jiayun was also uneasy. It was common for students to be emotionally distressed during differentiation, and the effects were often far-reaching. If not handled properly, it could indeed have a major impact on the individual and even others at the base.
“Sheng Nanxi is soft-natured. Although she usually organizes and coordinates class matters well, overall, she is an introverted person.”
Bai Jiling also regularly read Chu Jiayun’s analysis reports, and while her understanding of the students’ personalities was not as in-depth as Chu Jiayun’s, she was well aware of their traits.
“We were worried that she wouldn’t be able to face the differentiation result. We were planning to arrange a few targeted counseling sessions for her, but we didn’t expect her to differentiate so suddenly.”
When they arrived at the base, they were not surprised to see the Sheng family’s car, but to their astonishment, Yu Mu and Yu Sui were also in the car.
The Sheng family was represented by Sheng Nanxi’s older brother, Sheng Nanzhu. After receiving the call from the base, he dropped his social engagement and rushed over.
He immediately spoke with urgency: “Director Bai, has my sister been found?”
Bai Jiling explained that she had just arrived and asked them to come to the office. Sheng Nanzhu didn’t bother to explain why the Yu sisters were there, but everyone knew Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi were close, so no one questioned it at this time.
Sheng Nanzhu and Bai Jiling walked in the lead, discussing Sheng Nanxi’s situation from time to time. Chu Jiayun lagged a few steps behind, constantly looking at her phone, seemingly detached, which made Yu Sui a little dissatisfied.
She leaned in, trying to see what Instructor Chu was so engrossed in, but she moved too much and almost bumped into Chu Jiayun’s head.
These were the records of every psychological counseling session the students had, which were private. Unless absolutely necessary, they could not be shown to unrelated people casually.
Chu Jiayun’s professional habit made her first reaction to lift her hand and move the screen away when someone approached rashly. Yu Sui’s forehead conveniently offered itself up and was tapped squarely.
“Ouch!” Yu Sui clutched the spot that was hit, a little annoyed.
Chu Jiayun examined her briefly and, seeing no major injury, sighed in relief: “I was looking at Sheng Nanxi’s psychological assessment data. You can’t look at it.”
“You didn’t have to hit me like that, though?”
“It was a coincidence. I apologize for the accidental injury, but please don’t approach me so suddenly again in the future, or there might be another accidental injury.”
Yu Sui rubbed her forehead. Indeed, the pain was only momentary, and she didn’t feel much now. If it weren’t for Sheng Nanxi, she really wouldn’t be interested in these assessment reports, not even her own.
“Don’t worry, Instructor Chu. I will maintain an appropriate distance from you in the future.”
Yu Mu was on the side, feeling heavy-hearted. Seeing Yu Sui still in the mood to bicker with Chu Jiayun, she couldn’t help but get angry: “Nanxi’s situation is unknown right now. Can’t you be more serious?”
Yu Sui sighed softly: “Sis, we are all worried about Sheng Nanxi, but if we all fall into an abnormal state, how can we find her, and how can we help her afterward?”
Yu Mu pursed her lips and said nothing, only speeding up her steps slightly to catch up with Bai Jiling and the others, wanting to hear what they were discussing.
Yu Sui looked at Chu Jiayun helplessly: “Do I sound a bit heartless?”
Chu Jiayun replied: “Your thinking is correct. No matter who you want to help, you must first ensure your own state. However, next time you might consider your sister’s feelings and modify your wording appropriately.”
To be honest, Yu Sui didn’t really know how to get along with family, especially such close relatives. Being far away made her miss them, but being too close made her feel awkward.
Just as she lowered her head, she heard Chu Jiayun ask her: “Do you know the reason for Sheng Nanxi’s disappearance?”
Yu Sui hesitated for a moment and finally nodded: “I guess it might be related to the differentiation result. Since she came to the base, especially after the physical test that day, her mood has been a bit off. Sometimes she talks in her sleep at night, saying things like she doesn’t want to be an Omega. I didn’t wake her up, and she doesn’t seem to remember afterward.”
Yu Sui knew everyone’s differentiation results, and she also knew that in the original book, Sheng Nanxi’s personality changed drastically because she couldn’t accept and face the truth. What was even more ridiculous was that the Sheng family, who had always doted on her, was even less able to accept this result than she was.
For Sheng Nanxi in the original book, there was nothing more despairing than differentiating into an Omega. No matter how well-behaved or capable she was before, it couldn’t outweigh a cold and disappointing differentiation result. She couldn’t become an Alpha, and thus lost the chance to become the family’s pride.
Chu Jiayun’s face was not clearly visible in the dark, but Yu Sui felt a noticeable chill blow past her, like the evening wind, or perhaps emanating from the person in front of her.
“Instructor Chu, do you think Nanxi might be thinking of doing something silly?”
As she asked this, their group had already arrived at Bai Jiling’s office. The teacher in charge was full of anxiety and only dared to breathe a sigh of relief when he saw her.
After listening to the report, Bai Jiling’s expression was poor, and Sheng Nanzhu also shook his head repeatedly.
“Sheng Nanxi should still be inside the base. The surveillance and security haven’t seen her leave. She must be hiding somewhere.” Bai Jiling calmed down, analyzing composedly, and assigned specific tasks to everyone.
“Jiayun, based on your analysis of her psychological state, suggest a few places where she is most likely to be.”
She turned to the teacher in charge and said: “Tell them to keep searching. Don’t miss any clues. Every place must be thoroughly checked.”
She took a final breath and said to Sheng Nanzhu and Yu Mu: “You two come with me. You might be needed to help counsel and persuade Sheng Nanxi once we find her.”
Yu Sui realized she was the only one left out: “Instructor Bai, how can I help?”
Bai Jiling frowned and thought for a moment: “You go back to the dorm and wait for Sheng Nanxi to return.”
“No!”
Yu Mu knew she was worried about her friend and requested to Bai Jiling: “Let her come with us. Otherwise, even if she goes back to the dorm, she won’t be at ease.”
Yu Sui, however, proactively made a request: “Can I go with Instructor Chu?”
Not only was Bai Jiling surprised, but Chu Jiayun, who was busy looking at the data, also looked up at her.
Yu Sui licked her lips: “I have the most contact with her usually, and I can assist Instructor Chu’s deductions.”
Seeing that Chu Jiayun didn’t object, Bai Jiling no longer hesitated. The most important thing now was to find Sheng Nanxi as soon as possible. Anyone who could help was welcome.
Based on the previous psychological assessment, Chu Jiayun suggested a few highly possible locations, such as deep pits, caves, maze buildings, or small woods.
Yu Sui tried hard to search through the original owner’s memory. These didn’t seem to be Sheng Nanxi’s favorite places. She refused to give up, thinking and eliminating possibilities over and over again.
Chu Jiayun saw her struggling and comforted her: “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Searching all these places is fine too.”
“But won’t that delay time? Her emotions must be especially unstable right now.” Yu Sui was genuinely worried about her friend. Although they hadn’t spent much time together, Sheng Nanxi’s sincerity made her feel the preciousness of friendship.
She didn’t want to lose this good friend, not at all.
“Sheng Nanxi is emotionally sensitive, but she actually has resilience deep down. She won’t easily do anything foolish.”
Yu Sui wasn’t worried about that either. Sheng Nanxi was indeed not as senseless as Chen Yinian.
“She’s very smart and rational. I know she won’t do anything silly.” Yu Sui’s voice lowered, and she said sadly, “But the longer she spends overthinking, the easier it is for her to get stuck in a dead end, piercing those pains into her heart, burying them deeper and deeper.”
Yu Sui pointed to her chest: “And then spend a lifetime trying to heal.”
Chu Jiayun hadn’t expected her to think of these things. Besides being surprised, she was also deeply touched. The usually calm Chu Jiayun suddenly grabbed Yu Sui’s hand and quickly walked out: “Then let’s start searching from the most likely places. We’ll go to the small woods first.”
Sheng Nanxi’s current predicament was so similar to her own back then. Chu Jiayun understood how difficult it was to heal scars that were embedded deep in the flesh. Yu Sui’s words touched her long-sealed sensitivity, and it also brought her closer to Yu Sui internally.
