After the Maniacal Alpha Settled Down, She Had a Wife and Daughter - Chapter 25
After the party, Chu Jiayun stayed in Jingcheng for two more days, not because of Bai Jiling’s warm invitation, but to wait for the re-examination lab report.
The last time she sent the perfume for testing, Bai Shiqian suggested she draw blood for a follow-up, as prolonged use of strong inhibitors at the base was too damaging to the body. Bai Shiqian knew about this; he was the one who initially provided the special inhibitor.
Bai Jiling drove her to pick up the report. Chu Jiayun, apart from the research institute, was single-mindedly eager to return to Ancheng as soon as possible. This was a rare opportunity to spend time together, and Bai Jiling was inwardly reluctant to let Chu Jiayun leave so soon.
A faint sense of unease lurked in her heart, always feeling that Chu Jiayun might not come next year.
Chu Jiayun looked out the window, not speaking, but clearly not taking in the scenery of Jingcheng.
“You always come and go in a hurry every year. Do you really have no feelings for this place at all?”
“If I must say, then I have more aversion.”
Bai Jiling sighed, persuading her: “Jiaxi’s matter was an accident. Why blame the city?”
Chu Jiayun still looked out the window. Over the years, she had regretted many times not letting her sister come here to study alone, and even more so, neglecting her living environment here. After the incident, she didn’t even know who Chu Jiaxi was closest to at school, who she was genuinely dating, and that Chu Jiaxi was depressed, and had been for quite some time.
It turned out that her understanding of her own sister was far from enough.
“I don’t mean to hate Jingcheng, but I just can’t have a good feeling about this place.”
She spoke calmly, even coldly, making it impossible for Bai Jiling to try to change her perspective. Subjective feelings were the hardest to forcefully reverse, especially since Chu Jiayun also carried a deep emotional burden.
“Since we didn’t find the SS-class Alpha this time, Jiaxi’s treatment progress will have to be delayed again.”
Chu Jiayun finally turned her head, her eyes dimmed: “It is indeed a bit disappointing, but I’ve already gotten used to the disappointment of these past few years.”
“Then will you continue searching next year?”
“If your information is reliable, of course I will.”
Bai Jiling laughed at herself, shaking her head: “Who knew Uncle’s internal report could be so unreliable.”
Bai Jiling’s parents worked abroad year-round. She spent more time living at her uncle’s house when she was little than she did with her own parents. She and Bai Shiqian were practically like father and daughter.
Bai Shiqian was a renowned biologist in the country, and the research institute under his name was a hub of elites. It not only regularly provided consultation and guidance to relevant departments but also had close collaborations with several large corporations.
The industry had long been paying attention to the once-in-a-century SS-class Alpha. Based on nationwide biological indicator tracking and predictive analysis, the scope was finally narrowed down to Jingcheng University.
Perhaps there was more precise information, but the experts were all being deliberately cryptic, unwilling to elaborate, only saying that the answer would be revealed soon. It was unexpected that they had struck out again this year. Bai Jiling felt sorry for Chu Jiayun.
Bai Shiqian was personally waiting for Chu Jiayun. He was the one who requested the re-examination after reading the initial report.
“Little Chu, do you feel anything different about your body recently compared to before?”
Chu Jiayun recalled and shook her head: “Nothing special.”
Seeing Bai Shiqian frown, she knew that there wouldn’t have been a re-examination if there hadn’t been a specific finding: “Uncle Bai, is there a problem with my body?”
At her question, Bai Jiling also became nervous. She had been worried about the inhibitor before, and now she immediately connected the dots.
“Your blood at the time contained Alpha pheromone components. Although the amount was very small, the potency was very strong, so it should have had a noticeable effect on you.”
“Are you saying my sudden fevers or agitation at that time were due to the pheromones in my blood?”
“Logically, it shouldn’t be, because you were using inhibitors at the time, and your natural instinct was suppressed. But the Alpha pheromones detected this time are very unusual. We need further analysis.”
Bai Shiqian knew that Bai Jiling was interested in Chu Jiayun. As an elder, he generally didn’t interfere with the feelings of young people, but he hesitated for a moment and then asked directly: “During that period, were you in close contact with anyone?”
Bai Jiling’s face darkened. What did Alpha pheromones in the blood indicate? It meant that the precious treasure she had been carefully tending might have been secretly taken already!
Chu Jiayun shook her head firmly: “No, I wouldn’t be so foolish as to do something like that while using a strong inhibitor.”
Bai Shiqian smiled awkwardly: “I wasn’t intentionally prying into your privacy. Don’t blame your Uncle Bai for being nosy.”
“Will this pheromone still affect me now?”
“It shouldn’t. I think you can feel it yourself.”
Chu Jiayun immediately thought of the time on the mountain when she and Yu Sui tightly held hands. The blood exchange must have happened then. Other than that, she couldn’t think of anyone else she had had such intimate contact with.
However, she didn’t want to rashly bring up Yu Sui’s name. The girl’s recent performance had been truly good, and she had been gradually correcting many of her past naughtiness. If she was suddenly dragged into this kind of misunderstanding, it would likely have a significant impact on her.
Since it no longer affected her body, Chu Jiayun didn’t want to implicate Yu Sui.
**
Following the previous arrangement, Yu Sui entered Yu Mu’s company to learn management. She was given an intern ID badge but was essentially wasting time. Seeing that Yu Mu had nothing to do at her workstation every day, Yu Mu instructed her secretary to give her the recently finalized development plan, telling her to study it carefully.
Sheng Nanxi was also there, sitting next to Yu Sui. Both were in the same position now, with no actual work to do. Although Sheng Nanxi had bravely communicated openly with her family, changing mindsets was not something that happened overnight.
Yu Mu seemed to have known her predicament in advance. After the training ended, she formally invited her to intern at the company with Yu Sui.
Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi each took a copy of the report the secretary brought and began to read it. Yu Sui saw that the Yu family’s pharmaceutical company had a collaborative project with Bai Shiqian’s research institute. They were planning to develop artificial pheromones, said to be for medical use, for patients who had lost their pheromones due to accidents.
She whispered to Sheng Nanxi: “Look at this. It looks really impressive.”
Sheng Nanxi also found it incredible after reading it: “If we have artificial pheromones, will Alphas and Omegas be able to swap freely in the future?”
“It shouldn’t come to that, right? It’s like organs; they need to be compatible with your body, or they won’t integrate.”
The specific details were not mentioned in the plan, but judging by the investment scale over a period of five years, it was a huge sum of money. The Yu family’s business was diversified, and its recent significant gains in the pharmaceutical sector were partly due to Yu Mu’s continuous innovation.
Yu Zhongqing hoped that Yu Sui would be like Yu Mu in the future, so he would have strong right and left arms, and the Yu family’s ascent to the next level would be imminent. But Yu Sui didn’t want that. For example, looking at the financial-temptation-filled plans in front of her, she felt no passion at all.
“Nanxi, I’m simply not cut out for business. I’m nothing like my sister.”
Sheng Nanxi, on the other hand, was reading with great interest. Unfortunately, her practical experience was too limited, and some parts were still unclear to her.
“You’ll slowly get used to it. New knowledge is always difficult to start with, but you’ll be fine once you become familiar with it.”
“I want to do something else.”
“What other shocking thing are you going to do now?”
Yu Sui cleared her throat: “I plan to switch majors when I go abroad. I don’t want to study management.”
Sheng Nanxi had already guessed her intention: “I’m afraid you won’t be able to do it. Uncle Yu will hit you.”
“He won’t have time to manage me when I’m abroad. I’ll just not tell him, and that’s it.”
Seeing her more resolute attitude this time, Sheng Nanxi suggested: “Why don’t you consult Instructor Chu and ask for her opinion?”
“Why should I ask her?”
“Because she understands us well, and a bystander sees clearly. She’s also older and so excellent, she must have better experience.”
Yu Sui mumbled, clearly not wanting to seek out Chu Jiayun. In fact, on the night she got her private number, Yu Sui saved it on her phone, but she never called it.
“Have you contacted Instructor Chu recently?”
Yu Sui shook her head: “Why would I contact her if I’m fine?”
“Ren Xuran and the others have emailed Instructor Chu several times. She really has a cold exterior but a warm heart.”
Yu Sui pouted: “Did you contact her too?”
Sheng Nanxi was very candid: “Yes, I did. I have so many questions to ask her about how to handle the relationship with my family.”
Yu Sui stopped asking. If she continued, it would make her want to contact Chu Jiayun too. She steadied herself, thinking that her self-control was getting worse, swaying after being egged on by Sheng Nanxi a few times.
Sheng Nanxi, who had been speaking softly, suddenly gasped, startling Yu Sui.
“A Sui, your eyes…”
Yu Sui instinctively rubbed her right eye before realizing what she was talking about. She hadn’t been wearing colored contacts since the training ended. Did her eyes suddenly change again?
It had been a long time since such a sudden incident occurred. Yu Sui was contemplating how to explain, but Sheng Nanxi gradually calmed down and asked her directly.
“A Sui, you’re the SS-class, aren’t you?”
Yu Sui lowered her eyes, avoiding eye contact, but didn’t deny it.
“I should have figured it out earlier. You were always exhausted like a lamb in physical education class, but during the training, you suddenly had such good endurance and explosive power. You also beat You Min so badly and bravely rescued Instructor Chu from such a dangerous place. These are clearly things the old you couldn’t do.”
Yu Sui knew that to argue now would be an insult to their friendship. Since Chu Jiayun had already returned to Ancheng, she didn’t need to hide so deeply anymore.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to keep it from you.”
Yu Sui didn’t know how to explain. She didn’t want to reveal Chu Jiayun’s disguise, but she also didn’t want to invent another lie to deceive Sheng Nanxi. In her dilemma, Sheng Nanxi, as understanding as usual, found a suitable explanation for Yu Sui.
“I understand. You were afraid that I would be more upset. It’s my fault for being so immersed in the fear of the differentiation result at the time. You had so many obvious changes, and I didn’t notice.”
Yu Sui was touched by Sheng Nanxi’s consideration for others. She stopped fighting to admit fault and promised: “Don’t worry about anyone daring to bully you in the future. The once-in-a-century SS-class Alpha is your best friend. If anything happens, I’ll be the first to stand up for you.”
Yu Sui had wanted to do things so boldly for her friends before, but she lacked the capital back then. Helping Xie Xiaoyun last time and boldly promising to protect Sheng Nanxi this time both gave her a tremendous sense of satisfaction.
“Are you looking down on me that much? I was carefully guided by Instructor Chu. Be careful, or I’ll tell her!”
Yu Sui suddenly became nervous: “Absolutely not!”
Sheng Nanxi was stunned and confused: “This differentiation result is more glorious than being the top scorer. Why are you afraid of others knowing?”
“I was young and ignorant before and made too many enemies. It’s better to keep a low profile now.”
“That’s true. There will definitely be more people who are jealous of you.”
Yu Sui hadn’t even let out a sigh of relief when Sheng Nanxi added: “Then remember to tell Instructor Chu. She cares about you so much.”
“Cough, cough. She’s so far away in Ancheng. It would be too shallow of me to specifically send her a message about this.”
“No, it wouldn’t. She’s coming to Jingcheng this weekend. Ren Xuran and the others are planning a dinner gathering.”
