- Chapter 3 - Special Treatment
The attention of everyone else present also fell on Yu Sui. She had no choice but to look up and respond to Chu Jiayun’s “sudden concern.” She had intended to keep her distance, but in such a small space, even the corner she was in was still within a limited range.
When she finally looked at her seriously, she realized that novels weren’t entirely made up. At least, the part about an S-class Omega’s captivating charm didn’t seem like a lie.
Although it was just a training program for Jingcheng University, the base was run like a semi-military camp. The instructors had several uniforms for different occasions.
Instructor Chu was wearing a black stand-collar suit, which was for formal events.
Her face was flawless, and Instructor Chu even showed a rare hint of gentleness. But Yu Sui wasn’t in the mood to admire it. Her biggest fear was being noticed by Chu Jiayun and, even worse, having her future differentiation result discovered. However, she still couldn’t help but let her gaze fall on the other’s equally rare and vulnerable spot: the scent gland.
The collar of the stand-collar suit wasn’t actually that high, especially on Chu Jiayun’s swan-like neck, where it looked more like an embellishment. But this small area of coverage completely protected the area above her scent gland.
She couldn’t detect anything unusual.
Yu Sui knew Chu Jiayun was an Omega, but no one else did. On the way here, she had listened to her classmates talk about how they wished they could differentiate into an Alpha as beautiful and alluring as Instructor Chu.
At the time, she thought they were naive, but after seeing her in person, Yu Sui had to admit that she did have a certain charm that other Alphas lacked. To be honest, she was even more striking than Bai Jiling, who stood next to her and was known as the most beautiful Alpha at Jingcheng University.
Of course, it would be great to differentiate into someone like this, but the problem was… she was a fake.
Yu Sui’s thoughts wandered, and she didn’t retract her gaze in time. Compared to Chu Jiayun’s quick, sweeping glance, her stare was much more obvious. However, during the first few days of the program, students always paid the most attention to Instructor Chu, so Bai Jiling found Yu Sui’s behavior to be quite normal.
Seeing that Yu Sui didn’t answer, Chu Jiayun added, “I’ve read all the students’ files. I remember you, Yu Sui, are supposed to be an outgoing and lively type. But you’ve been silent on the side for a long time, so I wondered if you needed my help.”
Instructor Chu was in charge of psychological counseling and guidance. It was generally not a good sign if she noticed you or if you had to seek her help. But because she was both hard to approach and incredibly charming, the chance to be alone with her became a hot commodity.
The classmates standing next to Yu Sui couldn’t help but pout, feeling that Yu Sui always had good luck and was the center of attention no matter where she went. They could tolerate it when she was a troublemaker who loved the spotlight, but even today, when she was so unusually low-key and silent, she still received special attention from Instructor Chu.
Was this what they called “taking the unconventional route”?
The others, realizing their mistake, were annoyed. They wished they hadn’t been so eager and had been more reserved and low-key like Yu Sui. Maybe they would have gotten special treatment, too.
To their surprise, Yu Sui flatly rejected Chu Jiayun’s offer.
“I just arrived at the base and am not very familiar with the environment yet. I’m in a great mood. I’m just looking forward to going back and helping Sheng Nanxi with our dorm room.”
The implication was that she was not only doing fine but was also in a hurry to leave.
Both her classmates and Bai Jiling were a bit surprised, but Chu Jiayun’s expression remained calm.
“Then I won’t hold you up. See you this afternoon.”
After saying goodbye to the two instructors, the group reluctantly turned to leave. Only Yu Sui walked away the fastest, without looking back, as if she really were in a hurry to go help Sheng Nanxi.
The others huddled together and whispered, “Do you guys think Yu Sui is acting weird today?”
“Yeah, I felt that way even before we got on the bus. She barely said anything the whole way, and now she’s actually going to help pack. Everyone knows she’s famous for being a hands-off boss.”
If they hadn’t known her for years, they might have been fooled by Yu Sui’s words.
But now they all agreed that it was just an excuse.
Watching Yu Sui’s figure get further and further away, they followed her, analyzing as they went: “Tsk tsk, maybe this is Yu Sui’s ‘play hard to get’ trick, trying to lure Instructor Chu in. They say the harder a person is to approach, the more memorable they are to those who don’t want to get close to them.”
Thinking about it that way, it made sense. No wonder, a few months ago, when they were discussing Chu Jiayun, Yu Sui had said with a look of confidence that she would definitely make an impression on Instructor Chu.
When Yu Sui returned to the dorm room, she saw that Sheng Nanxi had already finished everything. All the items were neatly organized, leaving her with no chance to help.
“You’re amazing. Your hands-on skills are top-notch,” Yu Sui said, taking off her hat and giving her roommate a thumbs-up.
She couldn’t wear her wig at the base, but at least she had a hat. Her light purple hair had been dyed back to black, but it looked pitifully thin and flat after being squashed under the hat.
Sheng Nanxi took a bottle of mineral water from the mini-fridge and handed it to her: “Did you guys see Instructor Chu just now?”
Yu Sui rubbed her hair, hoping to restore some of its volume: “We bumped into her on the way and chatted for a bit.”
“So, is Instructor Chu as beautiful as the rumors say?”
Yu Sui took a sip of the cool water and inexplicably felt a pang in her tooth: “She’s… alright.”
Sheng Nanxi clearly didn’t believe her: “Just ‘alright’? If she was just ‘alright,’ how could so many people remember her and be so obsessed after the training ends every year?”
“It’s just because they’re easily swayed by beauty.”
After the program ended, most of the students would have completed their differentiation. The high Alpha differentiation rate of 90% was enough to make this group of young Alphas fantasize about the beautiful and alluring Chu Jiayun, but it would only ever be a fantasy.
Sheng Nanxi sat down at her desk and asked curiously, “I wonder what Instructor Chu’s scent is like.”
In this world, mature Alphas and Omegas were not allowed to let others know the scent of their pheromones. It was considered private information.
Yu Sui remembered something from the book that had come up multiple times and casually said, “Crystal rose.”
Sheng Nanxi was startled: “Have you smelled it?”
“I’m guessing.”
Sheng Nanxi knew she was just guessing. If Instructor Chu’s scent were that easy to know, would she still be so mysterious?
She sighed softly, “I wonder what our scents will be like after we differentiate. It would be terrible if they didn’t smell good.”
Yu Sui parted her lips and decided to offer a “white lie” to comfort her: “With our high-quality genes, our scents will definitely be lovely. They won’t be something like soy milk or pepper. Don’t worry.”
The original owner had secretly smelled Yu Mu’s pheromones, which were a light, alluring scent of milky green tea.
Sheng Nanxi took a file from her bag and pulled out a list.
Yu Sui saw her making notes on it and peered over. It was the list of students attending the training. Sheng Nanxi had been the class leader in school, and she was naturally the class leader again in this temporary training group.
“Instructor Bai told me to organize the list as soon as possible and send it to Instructor Chu.”
“They must already have these lists. Why would she need you to send one specially?”
Sheng Nanxi gave her a helpless look: “You wouldn’t know since you never pay attention to anything. The first stage of the training is for Instructor Chu to do a basic assessment based on each student’s initial psychological state. Then she’ll create a file for everyone to track their progress throughout the training.”
Yu Sui, who was halfway through her water, stopped. “So, that means we’ll have a one-on-one session with her?”
Sheng Nanxi wrote diligently, “Yes, of course. The psychological counseling is a regular thing.”
Yu Sui instinctively touched the back of her neck; it felt a bit cold.
Just then, Sheng Nanxi got a call, likely from Bai Jiling, asking about the list.
“Instructor Bai, I’m almost done. I’ll send it to Instructor Chu now. Okay, I’ll let the students know to be on time.”
Yu Sui leaned over, hoping to get some special treatment: “Could you put me somewhere in the middle, like after the first five and before the last three?”
“Why?”
Because that way she won’t have time to probe me too deeply, she thought to herself. But she couldn’t say that.
Yu Sui squeezed the mineral water bottle: “It feels safer in the middle.”
This wasn’t like her at all. She was always the kind of person who wanted to be first. Now she was willingly asking to be put in the middle?
Sheng Nanxi adjusted the position of her name on the list, checked it one last time, and then went to deliver it to Chu Jiayun.
Yu Sui sat on the sofa alone, feeling relaxed. She recalled her encounter with Chu Jiayun today. Right now, she was only 1.65 meters tall, but she would grow taller before and after differentiation. Then, she wouldn’t have to be afraid of the “black-hearted Chu” when it came to height advantage.
She was now curious about what kind of inhibitors Chu Jiayun was using to hide her scent so well. She wanted to try some herself after she differentiated. After all, having no scent meant one less danger, which was a good thing.
After a series of daydreams, it was almost lunchtime. Sheng Nanxi called her and told her to go straight to the cafeteria. Yu Sui put on the uniform required for the afternoon’s student-instructor meeting and headed out.
When she arrived at the cafeteria, Sheng Nanxi had already gotten her food. Yu Sui asked her about the list: “When does the one-on-one assessment start?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
Yu Sui nodded and started eating her fried chicken nuggets. The food at the base cafeteria was really good; the taste was just as good as any restaurant.
“But, Instructor Chu changed the order,” Sheng Nanxi said, looking at her. “You’re the last one.”
“Cough, cough, cough!” Yu Sui tried her best to swallow the piece of fried chicken skin, almost spitting it all over Sheng Nanxi.
“I’m the last one?”
“Instructor Chu said it would be easier to just go by student number order. It’s also better for her to create files and track us.”
That was a valid reason. But what Yu Sui couldn’t understand was that the original owner was so competitive that she had strongly insisted on being the first student on the list. So how did she end up being the last one?
Sheng Nanxi didn’t know what method Chu Jiayun had used to convince her. She didn’t think there was anything wrong with what Instructor Chu had done.
“She said that a reverse order would be more suitable.”
“And if she says it’s suitable, then it is?”
Sheng Nanxi tried to comfort a slightly agitated Yu Sui: “You know, the people in this training group aren’t from ordinary family backgrounds. The student numbers weren’t randomly assigned, so Instructor Chu decided this way after considering everyone’s situation.”
Fine. In other words, she was implying that the people with the later student numbers had relatively weaker skills. It looked like Chu Jiayun was showing her humanitarian side by prioritizing the weaker ones.
Yu Sui had nothing to say. She could only comfort herself by thinking, “Last is last. It’s not like she’s staying the night. No need to be scared!”
After lunch, the two headed to the auditorium for the student-instructor meeting. The students hadn’t all arrived yet, and Sheng Nanxi had to go and remind them. Yu Sui pointed to a seat in the back: “I’ll go save us a spot. Come over when you’re done.”
Just as she and Sheng Nanxi parted ways, Yu Sui came face-to-face with the 1.7-meter figure. She was wearing the same black uniform, but the shirt underneath had been changed, and the collar was higher than the one she had on this morning.
Her hair was clearly restyled into a clean and sharp updo, which made Chu Jiayun look even more like a true Alpha. Standing with the other instructors, she truly looked the part.
