After the Maniacal Alpha Settled Down, She Had a Wife and Daughter - Chapter 32
Chu Jiayun didn’t sleep well that night, a state that had persisted for a while. For her, the stress from the next day’s surgery was far worse than the insomnia.
She called a cab to the hospital, doing her best not to think any further. Either decision would be difficult for her. She could only choose the option that would bring her relative ease under the current circumstances.
After hanging up on Yu Sui last night, she spent a long time unable to distinguish whether she felt relief or loss. She only had the courage to tell the other person at the moment she made the call, but hearing Yu Sui’s voice, she involuntarily recalled the image of Yu Sui’s face hidden in the sunlight at the Yu family apartment that day.
The car was quiet, but the traffic on the road was increasing. Chu Jiayun had never encountered a serious car accident in her years in Ancheng, but today, she encountered one on the way to the hospital.
Bad luck probably came in waves. Fortunately, the driver swerved in time, and Chu Jiayun was not in life-threatening danger, but she subconsciously felt pain in her abdomen.
When the medical staff arrived, her first words were: “I’m pregnant.”
When she woke up in the hospital bed, Dr. Chen had just finished speaking with her attending physician.
“You didn’t show up on time today. I thought you had changed your mind.”
Chu Jiayun felt a little weak. There was a noticeable pain in her left leg. Her first reaction was to touch her stomach, but she felt nothing.
“The baby is still there. Don’t worry.”
Hearing Dr. Chen say this, Chu Jiayun finally breathed a sigh of relief. She closed her eyes and softly sighed: “I think I really might have changed my mind.”
Dr. Chen was not surprised at all. He walked to the bedside and looked at her with satisfaction: “That’s very normal. I’ve seen many mothers change their minds outside the operating room.”
Mother… that word was something distant yet dare not be touched easily for Chu Jiayun. She missed her mother very much, but she had also lost her forever.
When the car crash occurred and the pain struck, what flashed through Chu Jiayun’s mind was her sister, and the small life in her belly.
Perhaps this was the magic of blood relations. Even though she had only been pregnant for a short time, even though she had been thinking of cutting ties with this child right before the accident. Perhaps it was fate, or her attachment and longing for family affection. She hoped to have one more relative.
“Dr. Chen, will the car accident have any effect on my baby?”
“Your main injury is on your leg, which has been treated. There are no problems. Because you informed the medical staff of your condition promptly, the doctors knew how to treat you.”
“That’s good.”
“Babies can sometimes be so mischievous. They don’t tell you when they come, and they’re particularly stubborn when you try to send them away.”
Chu Jiayun understood the implication of his words. The corners of her mouth curved into a silent smile.
“Your leg injury requires a few days of hospitalization. We can also observe the fetus’s condition while you’re here.”
Chu Jiayun made a new decision: she was going to keep the child. However, the plan to move cities remained unchanged. There were too many people who knew her in Ancheng, and the sudden appearance of a child would certainly attract attention.
This was not a good environment for either her or the baby.
While she was recovering in the hospital, Bai Jiling visited her. But they tacitly only discussed her leg injury. Regarding the child, Bai Jiling only knew that Chu Jiayun had decided to give birth.
“I have no right to persuade you in this matter, but life will definitely be harder than it is now. I’ll say it again, if you need help, you can come to me.”
“Jiling, thank you. I will try my best to give the child a good environment to grow up in. I hope things won’t get so bad that I genuinely have to come to you.”
Chu Jiayun’s personality was like this: she would never easily ask others for help if she could manage it herself. Chu Jiaxi was her weakness, and she indeed let Bai Jiling help her a lot because of her sister’s situation.
This child would certainly be her weakness in the future, but she didn’t feel she would become weaker because of it.
During her hospitalization, Chu Jiayun saw photos posted on the social media of Ren Xuran and Sheng Nanxi, and she also saw Yu Sui in the group photo. The location was the departure lounge. They had gone abroad as scheduled.
Yu Sui did not post any related information herself. Chu Jiayun saved that group photo. Her heart felt a little empty, but thankfully, the pain wasn’t too intense.
She finally could sleep well in the hospital. Later, she realized that the insomnia and anxiety during that period might not have been entirely due to pregnancy reactions, but the child’s silent resistance against the decision made by their supposedly cruel mother.
**
Four years later, in an unassuming small apartment in a foreign city, Yu Sui was racking her brains over her latest design. She was biting a pen in her mouth, flipping the model in her hand repeatedly, and revising the design on the blueprint again and again.
The doorbell rang for a while, but she ignored it. Finally, Sheng Nanxi called her, and Yu Sui had no choice but to open the door.
Outside, Sheng Nanxi and Ren Xuran both carried heavy shopping bags from a local large supermarket chain, looking at her with helpless expressions.
Yu Sui slapped her forehead: “Sorry, I forgot you were coming over for a hotpot today.”
Yu Sui applied to change her major in her second semester abroad. Both Sheng Nanxi and Yu Mu thought she would choose a humanities subject, but she ended up studying design.
Yu Zhongqing found out later, which led to a phone argument. He demanded that she switch back, insisting she study business.
Because of this, Yu Sui never returned to Jingcheng and never asked Yu Zhongqing for money again.
Unlike the original Yu Sui, the current Yu Sui had been accustomed to a difficult life since childhood. Working part-time, buying discounted goods, and eating ordinary food were all perfectly normal ways of life for her.
Yu Sui adapted very easily to the lifestyle change that others worried she wouldn’t be able to bear. In fact, Yu Mu had been consistently sending her money secretly, but Yu Sui had barely touched it.
Sheng Nanxi and Ren Xuran had both suggested she move to the same district as them, which was a wealthy area, so the rent was naturally much higher. Yu Sui knew their intention was that she wouldn’t have to pay the rent herself, but Yu Sui thought this small apartment was perfectly fine, and spending her own money made her feel more at ease.
Yu Sui was busy tidying up her design drafts. Ren Xuran went to the kitchen to prepare ingredients. Sheng Nanxi was already used to the mess on the dining table. Shaking her head, she skillfully cleaned up. Soon, a rich aroma filled the air.
“Yu Sui, are you really not planning to continue studying after graduating this year?”
Unlike Ren Xuran and the others, Yu Sui had switched to a design major, which was equivalent to restarting her undergraduate studies.
“I want to apply my design knowledge sooner. I’ll consider supplementing the theoretical aspects after working for a few years. Maybe when you two get your PhDs, I can sneak in through a back door.”
Sheng Nanxi seriously “lectured” her: “We fully support you changing your major based on your interests, but academics cannot be faked. We have to criticize you for saying that.”
Yu Sui made a face and complained to Ren Xuran: “I’m not the only one who changed majors. Look at Sheng Nanxi. I would be regretfully in tears if she doesn’t become a teacher in the future.”
Sheng Nanxi had just poured potato slices into the pot and glared at her: “Cut it out. If I became a teacher and had a student like you, I would definitely die from headaches.”
Ren Xuran laughed heartily: “That just goes to show how great Instructor Chu is, capable and patient.”
Hearing that name, Yu Sui’s mouth curved downward a bit, though it wasn’t too noticeable. She had been very busy and fulfilled these four years, and her impression of that abruptly ended good feeling had actually faded somewhat.
But that person seemed to have remained deep in her heart, never truly leaving.
In the first year abroad, everyone was busy adjusting to their courses and local life. Coupled with the time difference, they rarely had the energy to pay attention to domestic affairs as before. It wasn’t until the second year that they realized they hadn’t heard from Instructor Chu in a long time.
After asking around other classmates, everyone said they couldn’t contact Instructor Chu anymore. Later, they asked Bai Jiling and learned that Chu Jiayun had moved to another city for a new job.
With that, everyone felt awkward about continuing to pester Instructor Chu.
Even later, they heard that Instructor Chu never appeared in the training courses at Jingcheng University again, and the SS-class Alpha still hadn’t appeared.
Yu Sui silently dipped a beef slice into the pot. The rich yet mild tomato soup base, paired with satay peanut sauce, managed to lift her spirits a bit.
Sheng Nanxi added a few slices of potato and winter melon to her bowl: “You can’t just eat meat.”
Ren Xuran indicated that she also wanted the same treatment: “Nanxi, you can’t only look out for Yu Sui. Where’s mine?”
Sheng Nanxi picked up a handful of pea shoots for her: “You don’t eat those, so what are you arguing about? Besides, Sister Yu Mu told me to take extra care of A Sui. If you have an issue, take it up with Sister Yu Mu.”
At the mention of Yu Mu’s name, Ren Xuran smiled and shrunk her neck: “How can I complain to Sister Yu Mu? She won’t bring me limited edition shoes next time she visits.”
“You can also have your girlfriend take care of you. You don’t lack one.”
Ren Xuran grimaced: “We broke up last week. Foreign girls don’t suit me. I won’t force cross-cultural communication anymore.”
Her sadness only lasted for three minutes. Afterward, looking at Sheng Nanxi and then Yu Sui, she jokingly suggested: “Neither of you has dated anyone in these four years. Why don’t you two give it a try?”
“Get lost.”
“Get lost!”
Ren Xuran was amused: “Rejecting it so firmly. Looks like both your hearts belong to someone.”
She first eyed Sheng Nanxi: “Future Teacher Sheng, who is your sweetheart? I mostly only hear you mention Yu Sui and Sister Yu Mu. You’re keeping too much of a secret.”
Sheng Nanxi ignored her: “Eat more vegetables, talk less. It’s good for your health. You’re in charge of washing the pot after we finish eating.”
Ren Xuran was always diligent about cleaning up. She then looked at Yu Sui with a grin: “What about you, Yu Sui? Who do you like?”
Yu Sui looked indifferent: “I like my designs. I like my toys. I don’t have many expectations for love.”
“You’re too zen about it. Don’t you envy the students at school who are hugging and flirting?”
Yu Sui confessed: “I actually really enjoy the feeling of being free and easy. Being constrained by a relationship is not what I want right now. Maybe I’ll consider it if I meet someone later, but right now, I just want to focus on my design.”
Sheng Nanxi recalled that Yu Sui had been pulling all-nighters to submit an application for a toy exhibition. She guessed the results should be out soon.
“A Sui, did you get accepted?”
“Mhm, I was selected. I’ll be exhibiting in Brussels early next month, which is why I’ve been frantically revising my draft these past few days.”
“Are you going with your advisor?”
A small excitement finally showed on Yu Sui’s face: “No, I’m attending in my personal capacity.”
Ren Xuran picked up her soy milk and clinked Yu Sui’s cup: “I look forward to Designer Yu’s work making a name for itself soon. When you have your own trendy brand, I’ll definitely buy the whole collection!”
Yu Sui exposed her without hesitation: “You’ll buy toys? Will your cats at home agree?”
Remembering the action figures that were scattered all over the floor, ravaged by the two chubby cats at home, Ren Xuran quietly wiped away a tear.
