- After the Maniacal Alpha Settled Down, She Had a Wife and Daughter
- Chapter 6 - A Deliberate Show of Weakness
“Your grades are so good, but she didn’t even ask about them. That’s weird.”
Sheng Nanxi was waiting for Yu Sui to finish eating so she could clean up the dishes. “What’s so weird about that? The questions she asked you weren’t about your grades either.”
“That’s different. I’m just book-smart.”
Sheng Nanxi was surprised when Yu Sui, who would normally just slump back and do nothing after eating, stood up and took the dishes from her hands. “I’ll wash the dishes tonight.”
Students weren’t allowed to cook in the dorms, but they could bring food back from the cafeteria. Sheng Nanxi had gone directly to buy dinner after her assessment. However, they had to wash their own containers since disposable cutlery wasn’t provided.
“Just let me do it. Otherwise, you’ll get foam all over the floor, and I’ll have to clean it up.”
Yu Sui held the containers in her hands and walked to the sink: “Don’t underestimate me.”
Sheng Nanxi saw that she was serious and just watched her.
To her surprise, Yu Sui, who was usually lazy about everything, looked quite professional when she was washing dishes.
She quickly and skillfully washed the containers, then turned them upside down on the drying rack. She lifted her chin and asked, “How did I do? I’m good, right?”
Sheng Nanxi nodded slowly, admitting: “You really exceeded my expectations.”
Just then, someone knocked on the door. The two of them exchanged glances. Sheng Nanxi motioned that she would get the door, and Yu Sui took the opportunity to wash the dishcloth by the sink.
Ding Yan quietly greeted Sheng Nanxi at the door and then poked her head in to look for Yu Sui.
“Cai Limong just came over to my room. Do you two want to come over and play cards?”
Cai Limong’s full name was Cai Sijia. They called her “Limong” because she loved to drink lemon water to whiten her skin. She was in a different major but in the same college, so they got to know each other during their first year of basic courses.
Sheng Nanxi was never really interested in playing cards, but Yu Sui almost always went when she was invited. This time, however, Yu Sui said she wasn’t going.
Ding Yan looked at Sheng Nanxi, and they both thought they had misheard her. She walked in: “No way, Boss Yu, you’re not going to play cards?”
Yu Sui folded the dishcloth twice and hung it by the sink. She smiled and said, “I have to study for tomorrow’s class.”
Ding Yan’s eyes widened: “Tomorrow morning is the physical assessment, and the afternoon is psychological endurance training. What’s there to study for?”
She had glanced at the materials this afternoon, and there was nothing that required special preparation. Besides, Yu Sui had Sheng Nanxi to help her, so if she wasn’t afraid of exams, why would she be afraid of a simple class?
But no matter what they said, Yu Sui wouldn’t budge. Instead, she asked about Ren Xuran.
“I heard she fainted during the assessment this afternoon. How is she doing now?”
Ding Yan pointed towards her room and said casually, “She’s fine. We went to the infirmary, and they said it was just because of stress. She had dinner and is now lying in bed playing games. She was just chatting with Limong.”
Yu Sui was curious. Neither she nor Sheng Nanxi had encountered any difficult questions, and several classmates had also said the questions were manageable. So why did Ren Xuran have such an exaggerated reaction?
According to the original owner’s personality, she would have rushed over to gossip and probably would have stayed to play cards until lights out.
But Yu Sui decided to stay. After she sent off a bewildered Ding Yan, she turned around and saw Sheng Nanxi smiling at her, and she knew Sheng Nanxi thought she was just making up excuses.
Yu Sui went straight to her backpack, took out the materials for tomorrow, which were some handouts Chu Jiayun had prepared for them. Seeing Sheng Nanxi still dazed, she waved the papers in her hand: “Come on, let’s study together. You can help me review.”
Sheng Nanxi was a beat slow, and by the time she sat down next to Yu Sui, a pen was already placed in front of her, and the other one was swinging back and forth between Yu Sui’s fingers.
She felt happy. She didn’t expect Yu Sui to actively study after coming to the base. Her sister, Yu Mu, would definitely be very happy if she knew.
The next day, Bai Jiling led the students to the training field and had them run three kilometers to warm up. The light blue tracksuit made Bai Jiling’s figure look even more slender. Her hair was neatly tied up in a bun, looking sharp and clean, which didn’t hinder her from leading the pack for the first part of the run.
“After the warm-up, I’ll group you based on your physical condition, and then we’ll start practicing.”
No one was happy about running three kilometers, but they had no choice; it was a required part of the training. And the closer they were to differentiation, the higher the demands on their physical fitness. There was also an unwritten rule that the better the Alpha, the better their physical performance would be in the period leading up to their differentiation.
So, no one showed any signs of struggle on their faces; instead, they ran even harder. When Bai Jiling gave up the lead, Ding Yan naturally took her place. She was on the long-distance running team at school, so this was her strong suit.
Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi started in the middle of the pack, but after a little over half the distance, they slowly fell to the back. Sheng Nanxi was the one struggling. Yu Sui saw her having a hard time, so she slowed down and ran beside her.
Sheng Nanxi was out of breath: “You don’t have to worry about me. Go on ahead.”
The original owner’s physical fitness wasn’t outstanding, but it had significantly improved as she approached differentiation. Yu Sui didn’t feel tired at all. She even felt like she could easily catch up to Ding Yan at the front.
But Sheng Nanxi’s face didn’t look so good. She looked even weaker than she did during P.E. class at school. Yu Sui was worried: “If you’re not feeling well, you have to say something. Don’t push yourself.”
There were often news stories about students having sudden accidents during exercise. If they weren’t saved in time, it could turn into a tragedy. This was just a warm-up; there was no need to risk her life.
Sheng Nanxi’s throat started to hurt. It was already difficult to speak, but she still shook her head and insisted: “I can do it. Trust me.”
Yu Sui put her arm around Sheng Nanxi, wanting to pull her along, which might make it easier for her. Usually, they would cheer each other on and finish their P.E. exams together. But Sheng Nanxi knew it wasn’t easy for Yu Sui either and that she was using all her strength to pull her.
She wanted to break free, but she was almost at her limit. She didn’t know what was wrong with her; she was even weaker than before.
Bai Jiling saw the two figures at the back of the line and squinted, but she didn’t stop them. She just wrote a note in her file. Just then, a person walked onto the field, wearing a white tracksuit. The brim of her hat covered her forehead, but it couldn’t hide her beautiful features.
Chu Jiayun walked up to Bai Jiling, looked at the students who were in their last few laps, and smiled: “They’re really great prospects. Their physical fitness is impressive.”
Bai Jiling had been keeping an eye on the track, periodically jotting down anything she found to be special. She agreed with Chu Jiayun: “That’s why I said this group is the best we’ve had in years.”
Chu Jiayun’s gaze finally settled on the two who were helping each other. She was a little surprised: “You’re not calling that a foul?”
“It’s just a warm-up. I’ve already assessed their physical condition. There’s no need for punishment.”
“Instructor Bai has a change of heart this year. She’s gotten soft.”
Ding Yan was the first to cross the finish line, and most of the others arrived shortly after her. Only Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi were left, with a little over 200 meters to go.
Bai Jiling held her file: “It’s about time. Let’s go over there.”
When the two instructors approached, Yu Sui was half-dragging, half-pulling Sheng Nanxi across the finish line.
Yu Sui didn’t feel tired at all. It was probably the easiest three-kilometer run she had ever done. But Sheng Nanxi, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. Her face was pale, sweat was pouring down her cheeks, and she looked like she was about to faint.
Bai Jiling reached out and touched Sheng Nanxi’s forehead and neck. She then said to Yu Sui: “Help her rest on the side. Keep an eye on her condition, and call me if there’s any problem.”
After Yu Sui helped Sheng Nanxi away, Bai Jiling turned to Chu Jiayun and said: “Sheng Nanxi’s physical fitness has significantly declined. It might be a side effect of the pre-differentiation period.”
Chu Jiayun’s expression changed slightly, but her hat concealed it from others. She was very familiar with this kind of situation. She had been the same way before her own differentiation.
Could it be that Sheng Nanxi’s differentiation result wouldn’t be Alpha, but Omega?
Sensing her doubts, Bai Jiling said softly: “I’m just guessing based on my experience. It could be for other reasons. Anyway, we’ll have more opportunities to observe.”
Chu Jiayun took a couple of steps and saw the two sitting not far away. Yu Sui was gently patting Sheng Nanxi’s back, handing her water, and seriously checking on her condition.
After watching for a while, she said to Bai Jiling: “I remember Yu Sui’s sports scores in her file were similar to Sheng Nanxi’s, just a little above average.”
“Surprising, isn’t it? Yu Sui could actually pull someone along with her across the finish line today?”
So Bai Jiling had noticed, too. Chu Jiayun knew that during the next group exercises, she would have more chances to observe Yu Sui’s “changes.”
Bai Jiling saw that most people had recovered and clapped her hands to get their attention. Chu Jiayun automatically stepped to the side, found an empty seat, and became a spectator.
“Based on your warm-up results, I’ll now put you into pairs for a relay shuttle run.”
Upon hearing that they had to run again, everyone’s faces finally looked unhappy. But they didn’t dare to say anything. Usually, this was when Yu Sui would step up.
Yu Sui realized that Ding Yan and Cai Limong were looking at her, guessing that they wanted her to ask the instructors to change the training content. Running was just so dull and boring, not to mention tiring.
But she wasn’t going to be the leader of the charge, especially since Chu Jiayun had shown up unexpectedly early. She definitely wasn’t here just to keep Bai Jiling company. The original book didn’t specify how the original owner was identified by Chu Jiayun, but she remembered the book saying it was after a series of screenings.
In short, she needed to minimize her presence as much as possible in front of Chu Jiayun. She had to go from a shining little sun to a speck of dust on the vast earth.
Yu Sui pretended not to see Ding Yan and the others’ signals and focused on quietly checking on Sheng Nanxi. When Sheng Nanxi heard Bai Jiling put her in a group with Yu Sui, her face, which had just recovered, turned pale again.
“A Sui, why don’t you ask Instructor Bai to switch partners?”
“Why?”
Sheng Nanxi pursed her lips, a little disheartened: “I feel like I’m in bad shape today. I’ll just drag you down.”
“Nonsense.”
Sheng Nanxi was not happy with her performance today, but Yu Sui refused to switch partners and even promised her not to worry.
“Did you secretly take some kind of stamina supplement?” She noticed that Yu Sui’s energy was really good today. She was performing better than ever.
Yu Sui proudly curved her lips, but when her peripheral vision caught the white tracksuit not far away, she reined herself in and said, “I guess the fighting spirit to help you was activated.”
The shuttle run was boring. A hundred meters, a turn, and then two hundred meters back to tag their partner. The worst part was that Bai Jiling didn’t say when they could stop. She just said they had to keep going until one of them gave up, and only then would she record the final score.
Yu Sui didn’t want Chu Jiayun to notice anything, so she deliberately slowed down, getting closer and closer to Sheng Nanxi’s pace. Once again, they became the “slowest duo,” and were even lapped by Ding Yan’s group several times.
Chu Jiayun looked at Yu Sui’s exhausted state and was a little disappointed. Although she wasn’t as weak as Sheng Nanxi, she was certainly a far cry from the other groups’ excellent performance.
Even Ren Xuran, who had fainted yesterday, was running faster than Yu Sui, which made her doubt her earlier judgment.
