- Chapter 7 - Unintentional Points
Chu Jiayun shifted her focus from Yu Sui’s group to the others. She wasn’t sure exactly how much time had passed, but she could tell from the students’ running forms that some were close to their breaking point.
Not everyone underwent such training before differentiation. Only the most promising prospects with the best potential were given this much attention to be screened and nurtured. Chu Jiayun’s family was mostly Omegas, so she hadn’t experienced this herself.
Her sister, Chu Jiaxi, was an Alpha, but unfortunately, she was only a B-class. She naturally never received this kind of treatment.
She sat quietly on the sidelines, her mind occasionally wandering, but she always kept a close eye on the changes on the field. Ren Xuran was panting heavily, but didn’t forget to whisper to her partner, Ding Yan, during their handoff, “Look at Instructor Chu. She’s as beautiful as a statue.”
Yu Sui was in the lane next to them. Since they were already lapped, she couldn’t be bothered to count how many times she had run into Ren Xuran. She found that not only had her physical fitness improved, but her hearing had also become sharper.
She heard what Ren Xuran said and instinctively replied, “I wish she were really like a Bodhisattva.”
After tagging Ding Yan’s hand, Ren Xuran stood with her hands on her hips, waiting for her next turn. When she heard “Bodhisattva,” she twisted her head to look at Chu Jiayun again. The romanticized image she had built up instantly shattered.
Yu Sui was waiting for Sheng Nanxi to call a stop. Since she wasn’t tired, it didn’t matter how long she ran. But everyone around them could feel how much Sheng Nanxi was struggling. To her surprise, Sheng Nanxi lasted much longer than she had expected.
At first, Yu Sui didn’t understand. Then she realized that Sheng Nanxi must be afraid that if she stopped first, it would affect Yu Sui’s grade. Yu Sui silently cursed herself for not thinking of this sooner.
Without hesitation, she gestured to Bai Jiling: “Instructor Bai, I can’t go on.”
They were the first pair on the field to stop. Bai Jiling motioned for the others to continue the relay.
After carefully observing Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi’s facial expressions and breathing, Bai Jiling asked, “Which one of you is at your limit first?”
“Me.”
“Me.”
Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi spoke at almost the same time. Bai Jiling gave them a meaningful look, scrutinizing them.
Yu Sui deliberately lowered her voice and said in a tired, hopeless tone, “Instructor Bai, my legs aren’t tired, but my mind and willpower are giving out. If I keep running, I’m going to collapse.”
Sheng Nanxi, biting her lip, looked at Bai Jiling. She was about to say something, but Yu Sui beat her to it: “My partner is also exhausted, but I’m having a harder time than her, so I had to make her suffer and get a low score with me.”
Bai Jiling confirmed Yu Sui’s determination to quit the training and didn’t ask for Sheng Nanxi’s opinion again. After all, this was a group event. If one person gave up, the other had to bear the consequences as well.
She lowered her head and made a note. Before leaving, she just said, “You two can rest. We’ll start the next session after everyone is done.”
After she left, Yu Sui quickly pulled Sheng Nanxi to find a seat.
“Instructor Chu is over there,” Sheng Nanxi said softly, looking at the direction that was getting further away from Chu Jiayun.
Yu Sui pulled her to the furthest corner on the other side without looking back, rubbing her legs and drinking water. “Who wants to just sit in front of an instructor for no reason?”
After saying that, she was a bit stunned herself. A model student like Sheng Nanxi actually liked that. In high school, she loved to go to the teachers with questions whenever she had free time. Indeed, people are different.
Sheng Nanxi wasn’t upset. Instead, she thanked her softly, “A Sui, thank you for helping me so much today.”
“I just helped you run. What’s there to thank me for?”
“I know you deliberately gave up just now to help me.”
Yu Sui slowly twisted the cap back on her bottle, staring at her toes. “No, I didn’t. I was just tired and didn’t want to run anymore.”
Sheng Nanxi didn’t continue to explain why she knew. She just repeated herself next to her, “Thank you, A Sui.”
Ding Yan’s group won the two-person relay. It wasn’t much of a surprise since she always performed like that during P.E. class. Bai Jiling gave a general summary of today’s results and pointed to the insulated box in the corner.
“Here’s your lunch. You have one hour to eat and rest.”
Ding Yan was stunned and asked, “And then we’ll start the psychological training?”
“Yes.”
Ren Xuran lowered her head and smelled the sweat on her shirt collar. She was miserable: “Instructor Bai, can we go back and change first?”
The others also agreed. Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi stood at the edge and didn’t chime in. If they were to talk about the smell of sweat, they probably had it, too, but since they rested early, their sweat had already dried.
Bai Jiling wasn’t usually strict, but she wasn’t easily persuaded either. This wasn’t the first year she had heard these requests from students. It happened every year, and it never changed.
“This is also a part of your psychological endurance training. In the future, when you enter society, not every situation will be comfortable for you. So, hurry up and eat and rest.”
She turned around, signaling that she was handing things over to Chu Jiayun, but she saw that everyone was still standing still.
Bai Jiling smirked: “That time is included in the one hour. If you choose to waste it, I don’t have a problem with that.”
She didn’t give them any more room to bargain. A few boys started walking towards the insulated box first. They had consumed more energy and were truly hungry. Besides, for people who often played ball sports, a bit of sweat was normal.
Lunch was simple: a sandwich, a drink, and a bowl of condensed soup. Chu Jiayun didn’t bother them during their one-hour free time, but she didn’t leave either. She remained just as she was before, a calm observer.
Ren Xuran, eating her sandwich, squatted in front of Yu Sui: “Instructor Chu’s teaching method is so unique. Does she have to be so observant?”
Yu Sui didn’t even lift her eyelids. In her eyes, Chu Jiayun was less appealing than the sandwich in front of her.
“She’s a psychology expert. Of course, she knows more than we do. Don’t worry about how unique she is. Just hope she doesn’t give you any ‘special’ training later.”
Ren Xuran shook her head repeatedly: “Oh, no, I wouldn’t dare.”
She didn’t want to be the center of attention. Fainting in front of Chu Jiayun yesterday was embarrassing enough. She didn’t want another awkward moment today.
Yu Sui took the opportunity to ask about yesterday’s events. Sheng Nanxi also looked curious. Ren Xuran glanced around. Seeing that no one else was nearby, and remembering the consequences of keeping secrets from Yu Sui in the past, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and tell them.
“It’s not really anything special. It’s just… just…”
Yu Sui urged her, “Don’t stutter. Did you get into a fight with Instructor Chu?”
Ren Xuran laughed awkwardly, her face blushing first: “How could I dare fight her? I just… I couldn’t help but look at her a few times, and then my heart started racing, and I couldn’t breathe…”
Yu Sui looked speechless, while Sheng Nanxi found it unbelievable.
“Ren Xuran, aren’t you being a bit dramatic? You’re like this just from looking at her a few times?”
“I don’t know why, but I couldn’t control it! I still think it’s unreal.”
Ren Xuran had secretly asked around last night and found that she was the only one who had such an extreme reaction. She didn’t even have to ask how these two had reacted during their assessments. They must have been more normal than her.
Yu Sui kept her mouth shut. While Ren Xuran’s words were shocking, they weren’t entirely dramatic. An S-class Omega did have a captivating charm. But it was impossible for Chu Jiayun to easily reveal this secret in front of others, so Ren Xuran’s reaction couldn’t have been because of an Omega’s pheromones.
An hour passed quickly. Chu Jiayun saw that besides a few words with Ren Xuran and Sheng Nanxi, Yu Sui spent the rest of the time eating seriously. She couldn’t help but feel more disappointed.
Going from giving up on the race to not making full use of her rest time, just eating, drinking, and chatting, was not at all what a future SS-class Alpha should be doing. She remembered Bai Jiling saying that before her differentiation, she could distinctly feel the changes in her body.
There was a strength from within, a force born from the heart that pushed her to become stronger. She had higher aspirations and was stricter with herself.
But looking at Yu Sui, besides the fact that she didn’t cause trouble or seek attention as her file said, there were no other signs of her getting better or stronger.
In today’s physical fitness test, Ding Yan, Ren Xuran, and Cai Sijia performed well, as did a few of the boys. But they weren’t on the key list, so Chu Jiayun’s focus this time was on the girls.
Yu Sui’s performance forced her to temporarily shift her attention to Ding Yan and Ren Xuran, especially Ren Xuran. The girl had fainted in her office yesterday. The school doctor’s feedback was that it was due to a hormonal imbalance on the verge of differentiation.
The essential oil in her office had a special component mixed in, which would cause a noticeable reaction in Alphas. It had worked on Bai Jiling, and Ren Xuran’s reaction might have been for the same reason.
The psychological endurance training wasn’t as easy and simple as yesterday’s assessment. For students who were already exhausted from the morning, their emotions were easily volatile.
Soon, someone couldn’t take it anymore and started acting out.
Everyone was diligently answering the questions when suddenly, someone ripped up their paper. Yu Sui looked back and saw it was a boy not far from Cai Sijia, Chen Yinian.
Chu Jiayun walked up to him: “Is there a problem?”
“Instructor Chu, I don’t feel well. I’d like to go back and rest.”
“Where do you not feel well?”
“I don’t feel well all over.”
Chu Jiayun looked around, signaling for everyone to continue answering the questions.
She sized up Chen Yinian: “I’ve looked at your past physical test records. There’s nothing unusual about you, and there’s not much difference from your usual sports grades. This discomfort you’re feeling right now is probably felt by others as well. Bear with it. You can go back and rest after the lesson is over.”
Chen Yinian suddenly became agitated, and his voice got louder: “I’m just so annoyed! I don’t want to keep answering these boring questions that I can’t even get right!”
This was not unfamiliar to Chu Jiayun. After a session of high-intensity physical training, a psychological test could reveal a person’s truest state. Chen Yinian’s reaction was normal, but as a potential A-class Alpha, he was unqualified.
Just when everyone thought Instructor Chu was going to give him a strict punishment, she actually let him leave.
“But you can’t go back to the dorm. I need you to get a medical certificate from the school doctor.”
After he left, Chu Jiayun slowly walked past each student, using the excuse of checking their progress on the questions to observe their emotions and psychological changes up close.
When she was talking to Chen Yinian, Chu Jiayun had noticed that most people were affected and distracted, but one person seemed completely unfazed.
She stopped next to Yu Sui, watching her answer the questions on the paper.
Yu Sui had to look up at her. It wasn’t polite to cover her paper in front of her.
“Keep answering the questions. Don’t mind me.”
Yu Sui rolled her eyes inwardly: “You’re standing here like a giant statue right next to me, and you’re telling me not to mind you?”
Despite her inner complaints, Yu Sui did her best to answer the questions. She also wanted to finish early and go back for a nice hot shower and a good meal.
Chu Jiayun saw that her handwriting was steady, and her thoughts were clear. There were no major emotional swings, let alone agitation.
Her physical fitness was a bit lacking, but her mental fortitude was excellent. All things considered, Yu Sui didn’t seem so disappointing after all.
