- Chapter 8 - Getting Her Out of a Jam
Yu Sui finally breathed a sigh of relief when Chu Jiayun left. Sheng Nanxi had already finished her answers and was smiling as she waited for Yu Sui to hand in her paper with her. Fortunately, Chu Jiayun didn’t have any other demands when they handed it in, but the moment their eyes met, Yu Sui still felt a chill on her neck.
On the way back to the dorms, the students walked in silence, probably exhausted from running and tormented by the psychological training. Yu Sui noticed that Sheng Nanxi was particularly quiet and sadder than usual. She guessed it might be because of her performance during the run.
Sure enough, Sheng Nanxi’s mood still hadn’t improved after dinner. Yu Sui was afraid she would get depressed, so she tried to cheer her up: “Long-distance running isn’t our strong suit anyway. Just finishing is a victory. You can’t compare yourself to Ding Yan.”
“I’m not comparing myself to them. I just feel like I can’t even compare to my past self.” Sheng Nanxi’s eyebrows were furrowed, as if she was thinking about something worrisome.
“You’ve been a top student for so long. It’s inevitable to have an off-day sometimes. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. You’re always demanding too much of yourself, and it’s exhausting.”
Sheng Nanxi sometimes envied Yu Sui’s mindset, but her long-held habits were hard to change. Besides, the expectations and pressure from her family were always there, which made it hard for her to be carefree.
“I hope I don’t have any more issues in the upcoming training. Otherwise, I’ll really have no confidence in my differentiation result.”
Most of the people who came to the base for training were already considered to be Alphas, both by themselves and by outsiders. The only difference would be their level and potential.
Yu Sui could only say encouraging things to make her stop overthinking. But she also knew how many difficulties Sheng Nanxi would face after differentiating into an Omega. Unfortunately, you can’t always get what you want.

After Chu Jiayun and Bai Jiling discussed the day’s training, they started evaluating the students’ performances one by one.
The focus naturally centered on the names that had been flagged. Both Ding Yan and Ren Xuran performed well today, which left a deep impression on Bai Jiling.
“Jiayun, I think Sheng Nanxi can be temporarily ruled out. Her physical fitness has declined so much. It’s unlikely she’s the person you’re looking for.”
Chu Jiayun didn’t deny it. Physical changes were undeniable. No matter how helpless or unwilling she was to accept it, she still remembered clearly how fragile she had suddenly become.
Fortunately, she recovered after the differentiation was complete, but that experience of being so weak that it scared her was still fresh in her memory even after many years.
“Yu Sui’s physical fitness isn’t great either. What do you think?”
Bai Jiling smiled: “She deliberately ran slowly.”
“Deliberately?”
“I didn’t think there was anything special at the time, but when I thought about it later, I realized something.”
“She wasn’t out of breath like the others when she stopped?” Chu Jiayun also recalled the details of that moment.
Yu Sui was helping Sheng Nanxi. At the time, everyone’s attention was on the pale-faced Sheng Nanxi, and they overlooked Yu Sui’s “calmness.”
“Even though she was running slowly, she had just finished a three-kilometer run. But her face wasn’t red, her breathing wasn’t too labored, and the hand she used to support Sheng Nanxi was very strong. This isn’t something an ordinary person can do. Even I might not have had that much energy in reserve at the time.”
Bai Jiling’s potential was considered very high, and her differentiation into an S-class Alpha was what everyone had expected. Based on her comparison, Yu Sui’s potential couldn’t be bad either.
“She also performed well in the psychological endurance training this afternoon. She was very composed and wasn’t easily affected by outside distractions. Her mental fortitude is up to par.”
Bai Jiling wrote A and S next to Yu Sui’s name, indicating that she believed Yu Sui was likely to differentiate into an Alpha of either of these levels. She wrote O next to Sheng Nanxi’s name.
Chu Jiayun also made notes next to Ding Yan and Cai Sijia’s names: “Chen Yinian’s psychological breakdown was too fast. I think he might differentiate next week.”
Bai Jiling was used to this: “Then he’ll be freed soon.”
The rest of the training for the week was gradually rolled out. Different instructors brought them completely different experiences and challenges. They had thought only Bai Jiling and Chu Jiayun would have high expectations, but it turned out the other instructors were the same. Everyone was so exhausted they just wanted to lie down and do nothing all day.
They finally made it to Friday. Everyone had packed their bags early, ready to go home as soon as the last training session ended in the afternoon. Being able to go home every weekend was what they looked forward to most. A week at the base felt like three years. Everyone was especially excited today.
Chu Jiayun didn’t have any training sessions on Friday. After finishing her paperwork, she also prepared to go back to the city. The feeling of living in a building with a bunch of Alphas was truly agonizing. She also looked forward to the weekend arriving early.
Bai Jiling knocked on her door: “How are you planning on going back this afternoon?”
“I’m driving.”
“Would you mind giving me a ride?”
Chu Jiayun smiled: “Don’t you have a car?”
“It’s in for maintenance, so I was hoping for a ride.”
Although Bai Jiling’s tone was a request, she knew Chu Jiayun wouldn’t refuse such a small favor. The two of them agreed on a time and went about their own business. Even without classes, they still had a lot of tedious work to finish.
Chu Jiayun drove her car from the parking lot to the office building. Bai Jiling had been delayed by a call from the Jingcheng University president. The training was over, and the students were walking towards the main gate with their luggage. Whether it was a private car picking them up or the base’s arranged shuttle, they could only get a ride from outside the main gate.
Chu Jiayun saw Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi among them. They had both changed out of their uniforms and were wearing casual clothes. Their styles immediately stood out. But Chu Jiayun wasn’t focused on that. She was focused on Yu Sui, who was trying to help Sheng Nanxi with her luggage.
Remembering Bai Jiling’s analysis, Chu Jiayun couldn’t help but observe Yu Sui’s actions closely. She was already holding two bags, but she was still trying to take a rolling suitcase from Sheng Nanxi. It wasn’t that she couldn’t, but she seemed a little too effortless.
Her file showed that Yu Sui wasn’t a very strong person, nor was she someone who was very enthusiastic about helping others. She had also learned from other teachers that Yu Sui had caused a lot of trouble. This was the first time she had seen her so well-behaved.
Chu Jiayun watched their backs as they walked further away, thinking that they were indeed getting more mature as they approached differentiation.
Just then, the car door opened, and Bai Jiling got in.
A distinct Alpha scent filled the car. Chu Jiayun’s grip on the steering wheel tightened subconsciously.
“The president gave me a last-minute task, and then I had to call the relevant departments to negotiate. I’m so sorry for being so late.”
Chu Jiayun rolled down the window. She only started the car after the scent in the car returned to normal.
“How about I treat you to dinner tonight as an apology for being late?”
“You were working.”
“Just think of it as a way for us to relax after a hard week, alright?”
Chu Jiayun was focused on the road, but her tone didn’t change: “How about tomorrow? I want to go home and rest early tonight.”
Bai Jiling shrugged helplessly: “You’re always so hard to get a hold of.”
After dropping Bai Jiling off, Chu Jiayun could finally be herself in her own space. Using powerful inhibitors for a week was truly agonizing. She took a shower and rested on the couch for a while, but then she felt a bit bored.
She changed into new clothes, put on a single inhibitor patch, and went out for a walk. It had been a long time since she had been in Jingcheng. She missed the street food here.

Yu Sui and Sheng Nanxi got into Yu Mu’s car outside the base with their luggage. Yu Mu had missed her sister after a week apart.
“How’s life at the base? Are you getting used to it?”
Sheng Nanxi smiled sweetly, not showing her unhappiness from the past few days: “Sister Mu, we’re doing great. And A Sui has started being more proactive about studying. She’s so well-behaved.”
Yu Mu motioned for the driver to start the car, and she carefully looked at Yu Sui. Hearing what Sheng Nanxi said, she was happy: “It seems like this training was the right choice.”
Yu Sui pursed her lips and sighed softly: “I didn’t want to come, but I couldn’t avoid it. I had no choice.”
That’s what she said, but her actual performance had improved. Yu Mu said she would reward her and told her to pick any gift she wanted.
Sheng Nanxi, at her side, envied Yu Sui for having such a doting sister. But she would never be rude enough to say it out loud. Her bright, glistening eyes held many unspoken thoughts.
Yu Mu, however, seemed to be able to read people’s minds. She smiled at Sheng Nanxi: “Thank you, Nanxi, for taking care of her and encouraging her to study. You deserve a gift, too.”
“Me, too?”
“Of course. Just like A Sui, you can ask for anything you want.”
Sheng Nanxi’s smile grew even sweeter, as if she had already received a beautiful gift. But in the end, she just shook her head gently: “Your praise is enough, Sister Mu. I don’t need anything for now. I won’t hold you up from enjoying your weekend. Bye-bye.”
Yu Mu watched Sheng Nanxi’s back as she got out of the car. Her throat felt a little itchy, and she couldn’t help but watch her for a while.
Yu Sui nudged her: “Sis, I’m right here.”
Yu Mu cleared her throat: “I know. So, have you decided where you want to eat?”
Yu Sui thought the most boring part about the base was how little there was to do, so she wasn’t interested in fancy restaurants. She wanted to eat and walk along the street.
Yu Mu naturally agreed. The two sisters walked from the bustling night market to the riverside promenade. Yu Sui patted her stomach contentedly, feeling very happy.
Yu Mu was usually busy with work and hadn’t been able to relax like this in a long time. Tonight, her sister’s appetite seemed to be bigger, which made her a little worried: “A Sui, were you being a picky eater at the base and starving yourself?”
“No. I ate everything on my plate. If you don’t believe me, ask Sheng Nanxi.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Sometimes when she couldn’t finish, I’d help her.”
So, her body was indeed changing. Yu Mu remembered her own situation at the time and suddenly smiled. It looked like her sister would go down the same path as her and become an S-class Alpha. That was wonderful.
As the two continued to stroll, Yu Mu suddenly saw a familiar figure not far away. The light was a bit dim, so she wasn’t sure. She nudged Yu Sui, who was watching the floating lanterns on the river: “Look, is that Instructor Chu?”
When she heard the name, Yu Sui subconsciously shrunk her neck. She looked in the direction Yu Mu pointed. After just one glance, she confirmed it. She had seen her every day for the past week. How could she not recognize her?
Seeing the pained look on Yu Sui’s face as she closed her eyes, Yu Mu couldn’t help but laugh: “You’re so old, and you’re still afraid of seeing your teacher?”
Before Yu Sui could answer, Yu Mu quickly walked towards Chu Jiayun with her.
After not seeing her for a few years, Yu Mu was more mature and had more presence than the girl who used to cry with her face in her hands because of her differentiation anxiety.
“Instructor Chu, I never expected to run into you here.” Yu Mu was unusually excited. In her years at the company, she had learned to hide her emotions.
Chu Jiayun smiled in response: “I’m happy to see you, too.” She also glanced at the person next to Yu Mu with her eyes lowered and added, “And Yu Sui.”
Yu Mu was quite excited about this chance meeting and wanted to find another place to sit and catch up properly. However, her perfume didn’t affect Chu Jiayun’s sensitivity. The closer she got, the more unsettling her scent became.
Yu Sui didn’t want to interact with Chu Jiayun in the first place, but she didn’t miss her subtle frown.
“Sis, I suddenly really want to go to Dongtian Amusement Park. It’s probably not too late to go now and ride the glowing Ferris wheel, is it?”
Yu Mu was stunned: “It’s so late. You still want to go?”
“I just suddenly really want to. I’m dying to go.”
She had been spoiled since she was a child, and her family had always indulged her in this regard. But making such a request now was a little inconsiderate.
To Yu Mu’s surprise, Yu Sui insisted on going. Yu Mu had no choice but to apologize to Chu Jiayun and say that they would get together another time.
As the Yu sisters’ figures got further away, Chu Jiayun’s discomfort gradually faded. Yu Sui’s behavior seemed hostile, as if she was very reluctant to be with her. But she also had a vague feeling that Yu Sui had noticed her discomfort and was helping her get out of a difficult situation?
But that didn’t make sense. Chu Jiayun couldn’t think of a good reason, but Yu Sui’s name popped into her head a few more times on the way home.
