After Transmigrating as a Beta, I Got Messed Up with an Alpha (BL) - Chapter 9
After the lunch break ended, the afternoon classes were very peaceful for Pei Yule.
This was because his desk-mate, Student Huo Juan, never returned.
Thinking that the guy had a high fever and had just taken medicine and an injection, Pei Yule assumed he had gone home to rest. Relieved that he didn’t have to face him, Pei Yule didn’t give the matter much more thought.
He attended his afternoon classes diligently. After roughly assessing his own level and combining it with the curriculum taught at this school, he quickly reached a conclusion:
With his current knowledge as a university sophomore…
He clearly couldn’t understand a single thing in these lectures.
The standards here were too high. The knowledge being taught wasn’t traditional at all. He recognized every individual word, but when they were put together, it was like listening to a foreign language. The formulas were the same—there were so many symbols that his brain felt like it would break just trying to memorize them.
After a day of trying his hardest to pay attention, Pei Yule decided that if he were to rely on knowledge to change his fate in his current situation, his fate was undoubtedly already halfway to the grave.
It was a tragic reality. Even if he wanted to find a shortcut, the original owner wasn’t exactly a brilliant or studious person either. The kid had spent all his time daydreaming about Fei Yisa and hadn’t listened to a word of the lectures. Even if Pei Yule wanted to use those “memories” to integrate what he was learning, there was nothing to start with!
The original owner didn’t know much more than he did; in his memory, besides Fei Yisa, there was only more Fei Yisa. His loyalty to Fei Yisa was absolute.
In a way, Pei Yule felt lucky. At least he had only inherited the original owner’s memories, not his feelings. His impression of Fei Yisa, currently, was just that of a cheerful, big-hearted boy. He didn’t have the “fragile Omega” constitution described in the book at all. Looking at his appearance and personality, he seemed more like an Alpha.
“Xiao Le-le, are you planning to go home now? Want to go grab some milk tea with us?”
Speak of the devil.
A large head poked through the classroom window. With a hand propped on the sill, Fei Yisa vaulted inside—skipping the front and back doors entirely—and landed next to Pei Yule to extend an invitation.
Shen Pin, who was always inseparable from him, walked in through the door, casually picking up Fei Yisa’s backpack which had slipped off his shoulder during the jump.
“…” Xiao Le-le?
Pei Yule stared at Fei Yisa, having almost forgotten that this person intended to be his friend. He now understood that the world he transmigrated into was likely a parallel world to the book he read. Thus, Fei Yisa and Shen Pin’s personalities were completely different from what he knew.
However, even knowing they weren’t the people he thought they were, Pei Yule felt that if he wanted to live a quiet life, he should stay away from these characters who were both familiar and strange. He decided to refuse.
“No thanks, I’m heading home.”
Perhaps because he had already tangled with Huo Juan a few times, he was no longer so cautious around Shen Pin and Fei Yisa. He reverted to his naturally direct personality and gave a straightforward refusal.
However—
Fei Yisa wasn’t someone who gave up easily. He said, “Don’t be like that! It’s the weekend after this, and I haven’t gotten to know you properly yet. If you don’t like milk tea, how about cake? The cakes at ‘Cake King Space’ are delicious, come try some!”
I’d rather not get to know you.
Pei Yule thought this to himself, but before he could formulate a more polite refusal, the overly-familiar Fei Yisa hooked an arm around his neck and whispered slyly, “As a witness to the ‘wrong target’ confession, I really want to ask how things are developing between you and Huo Juan…”
His voice wasn’t low. There were still a few people in the classroom, and they all pricked up their ears at the mention of Huo Juan’s name. Pei Yule caught this in his peripheral vision and felt that this wouldn’t do. If he let this go on, his peaceful campus life would be ruined. He quickly grabbed Fei Yisa and said, “Weren’t we going for cake? Let’s go!”
Remembering that he hadn’t eaten during the lunch break because of the chaos, Pei Yule decided to go. And so, the trio headed to the nearby cake shop, “Cake King Space.”
Walking together, excluding himself as an ordinary Beta, the Alpha and Omega were both exceptionally good-looking. Their entry into the cake shop—which was full of young girls—caused an instant sensation.
People were whispering: “So handsome… they must both be Alphas, right?”
Pei Yule looked at Fei Yisa, who was excitedly examining the glass display case to decide which cake to buy. Indeed, his heroic and handsome appearance made it very easy for people to mistake him for an Alpha.
Pei Yule had seen other Omegas at school—there were a few in his class. Every one of them was beautiful and cute. One of them was essentially the “school flower” type, surrounded like a star by its moons. Their features were more delicate than any other Omega, with a fragile, translucent quality. They were completely different from Fei Yisa.
While Fei Yisa was curious about his relationship with Huo Juan, Pei Yule was also a bit curious about something. Once they had selected their cakes and found a seat, influenced by the whispers of the bystanders, Pei Yule couldn’t hide his curiosity anymore.
“Are you… really an Omega?”
Could it be that, just like his personality, his gender was also different from what he knew? Pei Yule could smell the pheromones on Fei Yisa—a very refreshing lime scent.
Based on pheromones alone, Fei Yisa’s scent made it a bit hard to distinguish if he was an Omega or an Alpha. Shen Pin’s pheromones, though he couldn’t quite name the scent, were cold and intimidating, clearly belonging to an Alpha.
This was why Pei Yule suspected his understanding might be wrong once again.
Hearing this, Fei Yisa blinked, then burst out laughing. “Xiao Le-le, asking that is a form of sexual harassment, you know.”
Pei Yule froze. Noticing Shen Pin’s neutral gaze sweeping over, he suddenly realized that asking an Omega that was indeed borderline harassment. If it were a marked Omega, asking that could get him beaten up by the Alpha in a heartbeat.
Feeling that Shen Pin’s gaze was somewhat meaningful, Pei Yule realized his mistake and apologized quickly: “Sorry, I didn’t mean it that way. I was just… uh, no, anyway, I’m very sorry.”
Saying he was just curious felt impolite, so Pei Yule lowered his head and admitted his fault.
“It’s fine,” Fei Yisa said generously. “It’s true, I am an Omega.” He winked at Pei Yule. “Though I don’t look like one at all.”
Looking at Fei Yisa’s open and unbothered face, Pei Yule felt a slight stir in his heart.
It was true… the way Fei Yisa carried himself made it impossible to imagine him falling into a Heat cycle and craving an Alpha’s comfort. He began to understand why the original owner liked Fei Yisa so much. He was bright and handsome, without a shadow of gloom.
Pei Yule thought that if he had transmigrated as an Omega, based on his knowledge of them, he definitely wouldn’t be as cheerful as Fei Yisa; he might have been crushed by it.
Actually, becoming friends with Fei Yisa… maybe he was the one getting the better end of the deal.
Just as this thought surfaced, Fei Yisa took a bite of cake and said, “From the looks of it these past two days, you and Huo Juan are doing great. You successfully made it into his private territory right away, and several times he’s even been the one taking the initiative. You’re really amazing.” He swallowed the cake and gave Pei Yule a thumbs-up.
“…”
One sentence pulled Pei Yule back to reality, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
He could tell Fei Yisa genuinely wanted to be friends, but their acquaintance started with a lie, and Fei Yisa still firmly believed it. One of the reasons for this “meeting” today was that very topic. How was he supposed to tell him it was all a misunderstanding?
Pei Yule opened his mouth, wanting to stop deceiving Fei Yisa but not knowing how to explain it. He once again cursed his own stupidity at the time.
Seeing Pei Yule’s hesitant expression, Fei Yisa seemed to misinterpret it. He patted his shoulder. “I’m serious, you’re amazing. Out of all the people who like Huo Juan, you’ve made the fastest progress!”
“…” I’m not happy about this at all.
Seeing Pei Yule’s gloomy face, Fei Yisa thought for a moment and added, “Huo Juan’s been in his Rut lately, right?”
Pei Yule could answer that one. Thinking of how Huo Juan looked with a high fever because of the Rut, he nodded.
“That’s it then!” Fei Yisa finished his cake in a few bites and clapped his hands. “Someone who is allowed to be near Huo Juan during his Rut—besides his family, you’re probably the only one. Be proud, young man!”
Pei Yule said, “Not true, there’s also Xu Yanxi.” He had read the book and seen it with his own eyes; he wouldn’t be fooled.
“Xu Yanxi is different,” Fei Yisa explained. “They grew up together and are both Alphas. Xu Yanxi isn’t ‘allowed’ near him; rather, Xu Yanxi is the only one who can stand in front of him and stop him when he’s releasing pheromones. They are both top-tier Alphas—two of the only three in this school.”
A certain phrase caught Pei Yule’s attention: “Only three?”
Fei Yisa nudged the silent Shen Pin with his elbow and smiled. “The other one is right here.”
…As expected of the three main characters of the book. All were top-tier Alphas.
Thinking about how he had been suppressed by pheromones until his legs were weak and his fingers shook, Pei Yule couldn’t deny a tiny hint of envy, despite being glad he was a Beta who didn’t suffer from Heats or Ruts. It was a natural admiration for the strong.
Honestly, being pinned by an Alpha until he couldn’t move felt humiliating, but that was just his pride as a man. Fei Yisa completely misunderstood his low mood and patted his shoulder encouragingly: “Anyway, I think you’ll get your wish soon. Keep at it!”
Pei Yule: “…” He couldn’t bring himself to say thank you, so he just gave a couple of dry laughs.
After the three said their goodbyes at the cake shop, Pei Yule returned to his apartment alone. After dinner, he reviewed the day’s events, reflecting on his poor handling of the various surprises. After running through Huo Juan’s appearance in his mind, he reminded himself that he had to find a suitable time to tell Fei Yisa the truth. Then, he washed up and went to bed.
Time passed quickly, and three days flew by.
Since transmigrating, these three days were the most relaxed Pei Yule had spent at No. 1 High School. He went to class and left diligently every day. Aside from the occasional snack with Fei Yisa and Shen Pin after school, no one blocked his path home, no one dragged him into a hug during lunch, and he didn’t have to give anyone injections.
This was because Student Huo Juan, the person responsible for all of that, hadn’t been to school since that day.
Without Huo Juan, Class 3-A was just a normal senior classroom. Although there wasn’t much of a “studious” atmosphere, at least he wasn’t constantly drawing crowds of stares. Pei Yule felt much lighter. He even had a fleeting thought: Indeed, life is much more comfortable when Huo Juan isn’t around.
Even though, in the end, he was the one who brought that trouble on himself.
By the end of the third day, seeing that Huo Juan still hadn’t shown up, Pei Yule felt a bit uneasy. After all, Huo Juan’s condition hadn’t been good that day, and he had personally given him the injection. Now he’d been missing for days. Connecting the dots, he couldn’t help but worry if something had happened to him.
With this slight anxiety, the fourth day arrived.
Huo Juan was still absent.
In this ABO-integrated school, the restrooms were divided into individual stalls, very private. Early that morning, Pei Yule had just finished his business and was washing his hands. He was debating whether to subtly ask Xu Yanxi about Huo Juan’s situation—and whether his absence had anything to do with him—when he suddenly heard a strange noise from above the stall door.
He looked up in confusion.
Splash!
Someone poured a bucket of water directly over his head from above the partition.
“…”
Water droplets trickled down his bangs. The cold sensation spread from the top of his head—it was freezing in winter. Fortunately, it seemed to be clean water. Pei Yule calmly finished washing his hands, flicked the water from his fingers, and, with a head of soaking wet hair, calmly opened the restroom door.
No one was there. Only a lonely bucket remained.
The lingering pheromones in the air told Pei Yule that this was someone with a Magnolia scent…
Most likely, an Omega.
