After Transmigrating as a Scumbag Alpha, I Ended Up with the Movie Queen - Chapter 10
She had explicitly told her Papa that she didn’t want a younger partner, or even a partner at all. She hadn’t mentioned having a girlfriend to him before, and now she had been caught in a potential contradiction…
Shen Zhibei didn’t dare imagine what would happen if her Papa found out they were acting. She watched Gu Nan nervously, terrified that Gu Nan would say something to trigger him. She knew Gu Nan didn’t truly know her; if Gu Nan simply agreed with Papa’s assumptions, her lie would be exposed instantly.
“Eh? Zhibei doesn’t talk much?” Gu Nan looked at Shen Zhibei with a face full of confusion. “I feel like she’s a total chatterbox?”
Shen Zhibei froze for a moment. Then, her face flushed red, and she gave Gu Nan a sharp pinch, huffing, “Who are you calling a chatterbox?”
“I am! I’m the chatterbox,” Gu Nan said with a laugh, catching Shen Zhibei’s hand.
Lin Zhaoyang patted his forehead. “Oh dear, as I get older, I’m starting to misremember things. Right, right, I’m the one who remembered wrong.”
The tension in the ward evaporated instantly. Though Shen Zhibei had no idea how Gu Nan knew that detail, she relaxed. After testing the waters and confirming that Gu Nan was indeed her daughter’s girlfriend, Lin Zhaoyang’s spirits lifted.
“Zhibei, go wash some fruit. It’s Nannan’s first time here; why are you letting her do the washing?”
“Papa, it’s Gu Nan’s first time and you’re already doting on her and bossing me around. Am I still your number one daughter?” Shen Zhibei pouted playfully.
“Of course you’re number one. No one compares.”
After Lin Zhaoyang coaxed her with a series of sweet words, Shen Zhibei stood up. She took the fruit from Gu Nan and instructed, “Chat with Papa for a bit while I go wash these.”
With her back to her father, Shen Zhibei shot Gu Nan a meaningful look. Gu Nan gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, signaling, Leave everything to me.
Shen Zhibei wasn’t reassured at all, but she couldn’t disobey her Papa. With her heart in her throat, she walked slowly to the sink.
Watching Shen Zhibei’s back, Lin Zhaoyang’s eyes began to glisten with tears. He took Gu Nan’s hand. “I never expected Zhibei to choose someone so much younger. It seems she really has moved on from the past.”
“Nannan, I have no requirements for Zhibei’s partner, other than this: I hope you treat her well in the future.”
“Papa, don’t worry,” Gu Nan promised, feeling his sincere love for his daughter. “I won’t let Zhibei suffer a single grievance.”
“That’s good, that’s good.” Lin Zhaoyang wiped his tears. Feeling his emotions becoming too volatile, he took two pills from a bottle on the nightstand with a sip of water. He smiled apologetically at Gu Nan. “Did Zhibei tell you and your family about our situation?”
“She told me everything. My family just knows the basic circumstances,” Gu Nan soothed him.
“She actually told you? It seems she really likes you,” Lin Zhaoyang sighed. “Because of what happened with her father, she has shadows in her heart. But no parent wants their child to be trapped in the shadows of the previous generation forever. Knowing you’re with her now lets me rest easier.”
“Papa, rest assured. I have a stable job, I don’t smoke, I only drink for business occasions, and I have a house and a car. I might be younger than Zhibei, but I am very reliable,” Gu Nan stated her “stats.”
Lin Zhaoyang chuckled. “Are you trying to show that you’re the exact opposite of Zhibei’s father?”
“Exactly!” Gu Nan said without hesitation.
“Well, there’s actually one more thing Zhibei would like about you.”
“What’s that?”
“Humor.” Lin Zhaoyang burst into loud laughter.
In the bathroom, Shen Zhibei listened to the conversation while washing the fruit. Because of the running water, the words were muffled, but that burst of laughter reached her ears clearly.
How long had it been since Papa laughed like that? She had been so busy filming that she hadn’t spent enough time with him. Perhaps she really should reduce her workload and spend more time with family.
Inside the ward, Gu Nan finally transitioned to their main topic. “Papa, actually, we came today because we have something important to tell you.”
“Oh? What is it?” Lin Zhaoyang had a premonition since the moment she called him “Papa,” and he asked with anticipation.
“Zhibei and I are planning to register our marriage.”
“That is wonderful news!” A wide smile broke across his face.
“Papa, my mothers wanted to come see you in person, but because of the visitor limit, they couldn’t. They are very traditional and believe we shouldn’t register until we’ve met you. Since they can’t be here, they want to video call you to meet.”
At this point, Gu Nan acted a bit shy. “Zhibei and I have also decided to hold the wedding a bit later.”
Lin Zhaoyang looked delighted. “That’s fine. If the wedding is later, I can adjust my health; maybe I can even attend.”
“That would be amazing!” Gu Nan looked thrilled. “Zhibei would be so happy.”
Just then, Shen Zhibei returned with the fruit. Despite listening in, she was still worried. “What are you two chatting about that’s so funny?”
“We’re talking about your wedding,” Lin Zhaoyang replied.
“?” Shen Zhibei threw a confused look at Gu Nan.
“We’re going to register first and have the wedding later. Papa said he wants to get healthy so he can attend.” Gu Nan handed an apple to Lin Zhaoyang. “Papa, have an apple. Zhibei loves these Fuji ones; I hope you like them too.”
“I do.” Lin Zhaoyang smiled and took a bite.
How does she know so much? Shen Zhibei wondered. Even if she investigated me, how could she know my favorite fruit?
Despite her confusion, seeing her Papa so happy made her feel warm inside. After the apple, Lin Zhaoyang urged Gu Nan to call her mothers. Before the video started, he insisted on changing out of his hospital gown into a decent suit.
The three parents got along famously. After the initial introductions, Gu Nan and Shen Zhibei couldn’t get a word in edgewise. They sat to the side, checking their phones and handling business. Before they knew it, the three parents were already debating wedding styles.
“So, when will the children have the wedding? What kind of wedding should it be?” Lin Zhaoyang asked.
“We shouldn’t meddle too much,” Gu Tiansheng laughed. “They think we’re ‘old fossils.’ They have their own ideas; we’ll let them decide.”
“True,” Lin Zhaoyang agreed. “By the way, how long have Nannan and Zhibei known each other?”
“Ha, haha.” Gu Tiansheng gave an awkward laugh. She didn’t dare mention the actual timeline of their meeting, so she pushed the question to Gu Nan to improvise. “Let Nannan tell you; they kept their secret very well!”
“We’re in the same industry, so we met through work. It was a gradual romance,” Gu Nan lied smoothly, completely skipping the timeline of when they officially “got together.”
“I see.” Lin Zhaoyang accepted the answer and moved on.
Due to his condition, the call ended after a short while. The first “meeting” of the families was a great success. After having dinner with Lin Zhaoyang, Gu Nan and Shen Zhibei drove back to the Gu residence.
As soon as they were in the car, Shen Zhibei asked, “How did you know all those habits of mine?”
“You’ve lived in my house for several days,” Gu Nan said nonchalantly. “You put on an act for the first two days, but lately, you haven’t been hiding anything. It’s not strange that I’ve noticed a few things.”
In just a few days of living under the same roof, Gu Nan had begun to understand Shen Zhibei’s true nature. As she said, Shen Zhibei’s “elegant movie queen” persona had crumbled under the doting care of Gu Nan’s mothers.
Shen Zhibei’s true personality was nothing like her glamorous exterior:
If someone talked about a topic she liked, she became an extreme chatterbox.
She could talk to Mom (Yin Yuehua) all day, ranging from jewelry design to skincare.
She loved plants but had a “black thumb”—even cacti couldn’t survive her care.
She was a foodie but had a body that gained weight easily. She was constantly in a state of “painful longing” for food while trying to maintain her figure.
Gu Nan found this last point endlessly entertaining. Even though teasing her usually ended with a glare from Mom, seeing that glamorous face contort in the struggle of “to eat or not to eat” gave Gu Nan a great sense of achievement.
“Then how did you know about my family’s original situation? Did you investigate me?” Shen Zhibei asked.
“No—”
Shen Zhibei cut her off. “I don’t care why you investigated my family, but since you did, you should know how important Papa is to me. If you dare touch my Papa, or even think about it, and I find out, I’ll…”
Shen Zhibei paused, thinking for a moment before continuing, “I’ll tell your Mother and Mom!”
Gu Nan: “!!!”
Are you a primary schooler?! You actually like “telling on me” to my parents!
