After Transmigrating as a Scumbag Alpha, I Ended Up with the Movie Queen - Chapter 13
The unidentified young lady made no effort to hide her excitement, nudging Gu Nan with her elbow.
“So, are those rumors true? Some say you drugged her, some say you took her by force, and others say Shen Zhibei has completely tamed you. Which one is it?”
“Which one do you think sounds right?” Gu Nan countered calmly.
“Completely tamed?” The mysterious lady mused. “I don’t think the first two are right, because you don’t have the guts for that. But ‘completely tamed’ doesn’t seem right either. Didn’t you say your heart was shattered by an Omega and you were determined to just play around from then on? Could one Shen Zhibei really make you change your mind?”
Gu Nan took note of the words of this unknown woman, who seemed very familiar with the “Shadow.” Combined with the fact that her memory fragments were all clear except for the blurry part involving that glass of red wine, she felt even more certain that something was fishy about that night.
“You already know I didn’t have the guts, yet you’re still asking me.” Gu Nan hadn’t noticed before, but she glanced at the woman’s staff ID badge. It read: Lin Yue.
The Chairman of Lydia happened to have the surname Lin.
Gu Nan decided that as soon as she got back, she would check her chat history with this Miss Lin Yue. She had been too reckless, blacklisting so many people without looking closely; clearly, that approach was a bit too crude.
“You’ve really settled down?” Lin Yue was still in disbelief.
Gu Nan gave a noncommittal nod and steered the conversation away. “Why are you wearing a staff badge and playing employee today?”
“I heard Shen Zhibei was coming to shoot an endorsement.” Lin Yue tilted her head, pointing her chin toward Shen Zhibei, who was sitting while the stylist touched up her makeup to match her gown.
“I wanted to see for myself what kind of Omega could lead you into the ‘grave of marriage.’ I begged my dad to give me a spot so I could see it with my own eyes. I didn’t expect you to tag along.”
“This is the first time I’ve seen you so devoted to an Omega,” Lin Yue continued, her face still a mask of shock. “Not only have you been silent lately, nesting at home every day, but you’re also helping her clarify scandals and accompanying her to ad shoots. I feel like it’s about to rain blood!”
“I’m just fulfilling my duties as a wife,” Gu Nan tested the waters, trying to extract more info about the Shadow. “You know my personality—if I do something, I have to do it right.”
“Yeah, right. You said you were going to go after Shen Zhibei, and you actually entered the entertainment industry for it,” Lin Yue teased. “Then you thought since you were there, you might as well try to succeed, and ended up with such terrible acting. A bunch of us watched to support you, and our eyes were traumatized.”
Why do you sound exactly like my mom when you roast me?!
Gu Nan suppressed her irritation but couldn’t help revealing her future plans. “Stop roasting. I’m going to work as a translator soon; I’m done with acting.”
“Now that you’ve married Shen Zhibei, why bother acting? You’ve already exceeded your goal. But a translator?” Lin Yue looked surprised. “I’ve never heard of you having that hobby.”
“Hobbies are hobbies; work is work.”
Did Gu Nan like the major she studied? She must have, or she wouldn’t have chosen it. But that spark of interest had been slowly eroded by the daily grind until it was purely about making money. Now that she was back and didn’t lack money, she had the ability to turn a hobby into a job—but having had no time for personal interests in her past life, she couldn’t even find a hobby to pursue.
To an heiress like Lin Yue, who had never worked for money, Gu Nan’s words felt strangely awkward.
“So, when are you going to bring Shen Zhibei out to meet us so we can ‘play around’ together?”
Play around? Recalling what that phrase usually meant in tragic novels, Gu Nan’s tone turned cold. “What kind of ‘playing’ did you have in mind?”
“Let’s go out to sea. I want to go sea fishing,” Lin Yue said, oblivious to Gu Nan’s tone, happily plotting away. “We can go to Sheng Minshan’s family’s beach resort. I remember you have a yacht docked there—bring that out too.”
It turned out the idea was quite innocent; Gu Nan had overthought it. She looked at Lin Yue a few more times and decided to unblock her as soon as she wasn’t looking.
Despite the innocent invite, Gu Nan had to refuse. On one hand, she wasn’t familiar with these people. On the other, she doubted she had enough face to get Shen Zhibei to meet her “friends.”
“Zhibei has variety shows and movies coming up; she won’t have much free time.”
“Gosh, she’s already married to you—why take on so much work? It’s exhausting. You should talk her out of it,” Lin Yue muttered.
“That’s the wrong way to look at it. Why should she work less just because she married me?” Gu Nan countered. “Besides, work makes her happy. Why would I stop her?”
Lin Yue was stunned. “Are you really Gu Nan? How did marriage change you so much? Is Shen Zhibei that magical? No, I have to tell the group this bombshell news.”
Lin Yue pulled out her phone and started typing frantically. Gu Nan tilted her head slightly to peek at the screen, then pulled out her own phone.
Shen Zhibei had noticed Gu Nan whispering with the Lydia “staff member” for a while. She figured Gu Nan’s old habit of flirting was resurfacing; the woman couldn’t even hold it in for a few days.
But when Gu Nan leaned in to look at the other woman’s phone, Shen Zhibei actually felt angry. Before, it could have been “normal communication,” but if someone photographed that gesture, there would be no way to explain it away. If it got out, not only would the recent PR be wasted, but it might even spawn a “trouble in paradise” hot search.
Shen Zhibei scanned the room. Aside from her own team and Lydia’s photographer and stylist, there was only that one staff member. She felt slightly relieved.
From the sudden spike of anxiety, Shen Zhibei broke into a light cold sweat. The air conditioning in the room was quite high, and since her gown was off-the-shoulder, she felt a chill. She hugged her arms and pressed herself against the back of the chair.
Just as she was about to ask her assistant for a wrap, a suit jacket was handed over.
“Put this on,” Gu Nan said.
Shen Zhibei hesitated, but decided not to risk her health. She took the jacket and draped it over her shoulders. However, she couldn’t bring herself to be kind. Lowering her voice so others wouldn’t hear, she whispered, “What, you finally remembered me after finishing your chat with that ‘sweet and lovely’ lady?”
“Sweet and lovely lady? You mean her?” Gu Nan pointed at Lin Yue, who had her phone out to photograph the two of them.
“Who else?” Even though Shen Zhibei told herself not to be angry, she couldn’t help it. “Can’t you just endure it for a bit? At least make this PR campaign look successful?”
Seeing Shen Zhibei so angry yet struggling to maintain a smile, Gu Nan couldn’t help but chuckle. At Shen Zhibei’s glare, she explained, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. But that lady is Lin Yue, the daughter of Lydia’s Chairman.”
“You… know her?” Shen Zhibei was floored. Was Gu Nan’s acting in real life that good? She had looked like they were complete strangers. If she brought that acting to the screen, she wouldn’t be mocked so much.
“Yeah, we’re good friends.” Gu Nan said this with confidence, having just unblocked Lin Yue and caught up on their chat history.
“Then why is she a staff member?”
“She wanted to see how beautiful the woman who led me to the altar actually was.” Gu Nan lifted a stray lock of Shen Zhibei’s hair and tucked it behind her ear. “It turns out she’s been so dazzled by your beauty she’s turned into a fan.”
Shen Zhibei had intended to pull away, but noticing Lin Yue’s phone recording them, she froze and forced a sweet smile, allowing Gu Nan to finish the gesture. Despite the expression, her words were anything but sweet.
“What is she filming right now?”
“She’s filming ‘how sweet we are’ to show the people in the group chat how magical you are and how much I’ve changed.” Gu Nan sighed.
Shen Zhibei looked at her, not quite understanding the connection.
“That group is full of second-generation heirs. One of them owns the largest paid-troll army on ‘Big Eye,’” Gu Nan explained. “I’m going to talk to him in a bit and get us the highest-tier PR package.”
“I didn’t realize you and your friends were so… capable,” Shen Zhibei remarked.
Gu Nan’s lip twitched. The hand that had been stroking Shen Zhibei’s hair suddenly grabbed the tip of a lock and gave it a tug. It was gentle, but enough to make Shen Zhibei’s scalp tighten and her head tilt back.
“Don’t compliment me like that; it sounds incredibly sarcastic.”
“You pulled my hair,” Shen Zhibei said, narrowing her eyes and pointing at her.
“You were being sarcastic first.”
“You pulled my hair!”
“You were being sarcastic first!”
Before their primary-school-level bickering could continue, the photographer called from the adjacent room. “Shen, come. We are ready to shoot.”
“Okay, coming!” Shen Zhibei replied. She stood up and hissed, “Just you wait. I’m telling on you when we get back.”
Gu Nan was speechless. “Is that the only thing you know how to do?”
“It doesn’t matter how many tricks I have, as long as it works.”
Shen Zhibei gave her a look and dumped the suit jacket back into Gu Nan’s arms.
