- Chapter 7 - The Vulnerability Period (The Rut)
Xu Zhixia quickly put on her sunglasses, black top, black pants, and black hat—literally dressed all in black. She smiled and said, “I often go out for skewers dressed like this, and they never report on me. Don’t worry, I’m a spirit in the dark night now. They won’t know.” She was still mumbling as she got ready, only to find that Ji Mian had already left.
The door was left wide open, and Xu Zhixia shouted, “Ji Mian! You’re abandoning me again!”
Ji Mian realized that her vulnerability period was approaching. She was glad she had been careful about pheromones after the previous accidental release. Otherwise, once the rut hit, Xu Zhixia would certainly give her an earful.
Inhibitors were necessities for everyone, so even the most insignificant small stores would sell them alongside convenience stores and supermarkets.
She walked past two intersections and finally spotted a convenience store.
Whenever Alphas enter their rut, their emotions react, leading to feelings like sadness, anxiety, or a need for either inhibitor support, artificial Omega pheromones, or an Omega partner to get through the period. Based on the original host’s history, her rut was very short, lasting only one day. So, Ji Mian bought two bottles.
Five minutes later, she emerged from the convenience store to see a woman in black clothing standing strangely under a streetlight. She was pacing back and forth, seemingly looking for someone.
Ji Mian clicked her tongue. Why is Xu Zhixia following me like a ghost? She quickly hid the two bottles of inhibitor in her coat. As she got closer, Xu Zhixia spotted her.
“Hey, what did you buy?” Xu Zhixia asked curiously.
“Here,” Ji Mian extended a lollipop, which she was twirling in her mouth. It was orange-flavored and tasted good.
Xu Zhixia let out an “Eeh,” “Don’t you hate candy?”
“Is it not allowed for my taste to change now?”
“How can your taste change?”
“If people can change, why can’t taste change?”
Realizing it was a jab at her, Xu Zhixia often felt the urge to hit people when provoked.
But she stopped herself and remained silent for a moment.
Ji Mian glanced at her, “Let’s go. Why are you just standing there?”
The walk back to the hotel was only ten minutes, but it felt incredibly long to both of them.
“What have you been doing these past two years?”
Ji Mian said nonchalantly, “Eating, sleeping, and playing games.”
“You seem to have had a pretty comfortable life, then.” Xu Zhixia’s face was mostly covered, so her expression was hidden, but her tone suggested a slight sense of relief.
The night wind was chilling. Ji Mian tightened her coat, but the inhibitor hidden inside chose that moment to disobey her and slipped out.
Fortunately, Xu Zhixia didn’t notice. By the time she turned around, Ji Mian had already concealed the inhibitor.
The two returned to the hotel. Ji Mian realized she had left her room card in Xu Zhixia’s room. Xu Zhixia nodded toward her own room and said, “Come inside.”
Ji Mian was, after all, a female singer. Even though she was new to the ABO world, she didn’t have the same sense of boundaries as one would with a male-female interaction. Xu Zhixia also seemed to have no defense against her. If the paparazzi had caught this, it would surely cause a huge stir.
Ji Mian felt slightly unwell. After retrieving her room card, she intended to leave, but then she saw Xu Zhixia remove her hat. Her long, curly hair fell gently to her waist, and her jacket was already on the hanger, revealing her fair arms.
She was wearing a tight black crop top that easily accentuated her figure.
Ji Mian swallowed, staring at the visible curves for a while, and quickly shifted her gaze, realizing it was inappropriate.
Xu Zhixia hadn’t removed her makeup and maintained it perfectly. Her foundation was good, and her bright red lips looked like tempting cherries, practically begging to be picked.
Ji Mian’s body started to tremble. She only wanted to leave the area quickly, but she only managed a few steps.
The inhibitors she was hiding inside her coat tumbled out.
Xu Zhixia quickly reached out, picked up the two bottles of inhibitor, and handed them to her.
Anyone would recognize an inhibitor. Just by feeling the bottle, one could figure it out.
Xu Zhixia pulled her lips, her gaze seeming very unnatural: “So you went out to buy inhibitors, huh?”
Her voice suddenly became seductive. Whether it was Ji Mian’s hallucination or something else, she found it beautiful, and her body started to tingle.
“Uh…” Ji Mian snatched the inhibitor bottles, intending to run away, but her body was unsteady, and she accidentally stumbled beside Xu Zhixia.
Xu Zhixia was caught off guard, and Ji Mian pressed down on her whole body. She cried out in anger, “What are you doing? Get off me!”
Ji Mian was clearly panicked. According to the original host’s memory, didn’t she only get depressed during her rut? Why couldn’t Ji Mian feel any depression now? Instead, she felt a kind of excitement. And it was a difficult-to-suppress excitement.
Excitement…?
She looked at the disheveled Xu Zhixia. Although she was less glamorous than before, Ji Mian still thought she was beautiful—so beautiful that her face turned red and her ears felt hot.
Xu Zhixia said suspiciously, “Hey, hey! Could you please stop making such a lewd face!!”
Oh my god, even her voice is beautiful. It’s truly a heavenly sound!
Ji Mian shook her head, her heart pounding non-stop. She desperately wanted to escape, but her legs wouldn’t listen. It was as if they stubbornly forced her to stay put and stare at the seductive beauty in front of her.
Xu Zhixia became scared by the staring. She thought this person must have some kind of mental illness.
Ji Mian believed she had gone crazy. Why did Xu Zhixia look so beautiful? Her eyes were glued to her.
She wanted…
She wanted…
She wanted to be close to the beautiful woman. That would surely be incredibly comfortable.
The air seemed to carry a hint of mint. It must be Xu Zhixia’s pheromones. Ji Mian inhaled deeply; it smelled wonderful.
Ji Mian slowly moved closer. Xu Zhixia backed away, “Are… are you in your rut? No wonder you seemed to be in a bad mood. Should I take you back?”
“No,” Ji Mian shook her head. Her eyes were bloodshot, like a tiger eager to devour this pitiful beauty. She suddenly spread her limbs and lunged forward forcefully. Xu Zhixia didn’t react fast enough and was tackled to the ground by Ji Mian.
Xu Zhixia thought she was going to die, but then she realized Ji Mian was forcefully sniffing her hair and neck, making sounds of enjoyment, and smiling contentedly while sprawled on top of her. She looks truly lecherous!!
Ji Mian’s cheeks were so red they looked like she was vacationing on a volcano. Then, her hands started restlessly exploring Xu Zhixia’s body.
Xu Zhixia was stunned. She felt like she was being sexually harassed. Oh my god, if I don’t assert myself, you’ll think I’m a sick cat!
Xu Zhixia slapped her, a blow that came like the wind, making Ji Mian’s head snap back. She lay on the floor, stars swimming before her eyes, feeling incredibly uncomfortable.
After a while, Xu Zhixia fed her the two bottles of inhibitor and said worriedly, “Elder Brother, it’s time to drink your medicine.” Ji Mian nearly vomited when she heard that. Karma!
After drinking the two inhibitors, Ji Mian finally regained her clarity.
She said, “My face hurts so much.”
Xu Zhixia saw the red marks from her five fingers and pouted, “That’s what you get for what you did!”
“What did I do?” Ji Mian felt like she had blacked out from drinking.
“You tried to take advantage of me.” A simple statement, which would normally send the person into a rage, but Xu Zhixia wore a teasing smile.
Ji Mian was extremely embarrassed. She had indeed been captivated by Xu Zhixia’s beauty just now. She never expected her rut to make her so lustful. If she had succeeded, Xu Zhixia would have been furious, and Ji Mian might truly have ended up busking on the streets.
“And then what?”
“And then,” Xu Zhixia mischievously rolled her eyes, “You were forcefully sniffing my natural scent all over me. While I can proudly say I smell very good, you don’t need to be so desperate, or I’ll get very shy.”
Ji Mian: “…” Can you just talk normally? Fortunately, her tone and expression didn’t show any anger. Ji Mian felt a wave of relief.
“Speaking of which,” Xu Zhixia suddenly sat beside her, “Why is your rut so strange? You used to just hide in your room and cry for a bit, and then you were fine.”
“I don’t know either…” Ji Mian was still in her rut. Xu Zhixia sitting right next to her made her body involuntarily tense up. She sighed inwardly, stroking her head. If she knew, how could she behave like this in front of Xu Zhixia?
“Could it be,” Xu Zhixia tapped her lips, “that it’s warning you that you need to be in a relationship?”
Ji Mian was startled. The original host had indeed never been in a relationship. Based on Xu Zhixia’s analysis, it sounded plausible.
But she didn’t have any Omega she liked.
Xu Zhixia clicked her tongue twice. She patted Ji Mian’s shoulder with an earnest expression and said, “If you need one, I can introduce a few Omegas to you.”
“The Omegas you introduce will definitely have a temper as bad as yours.”
Ji Mian suddenly shook off her hand and retorted forcefully.
Xu Zhixia was furious: “Are you calling me ill-tempered?”
Many people called her ill-tempered, but hearing it from Ji Mian made her feel a sharp sting in her heart, as if she was soaked in vinegar. It was not a pleasant feeling at all.
“You don’t need to introduce anyone. I’m going to sleep.” Ji Mian closed the door and went to her own room, taking a deep breath.
She clearly remembered every little detail about the original host and Xu Zhixia. Xu Zhixia had never expressed any particular affection for the original host, and Ji Mian was certain there was no love involved. So why did she develop a psychological dependence on her during her rut? It must be an illusion, it must be an illusion!!
The next day, Ji Mian woke up very early. As usual, she opened Weibo and found that she and Xu Zhixia were number one on the trending list. Sure enough, the paparazzi had caught them again.
#JiMianXuZhixiaWalkingAtNight# The caption read: Movie Queen Xu Zhixia and the formerly popular CP Ji Mian were seen walking together at night. The two were very close, seemingly having a good relationship, unlike the rumors. Could this be a reunion due to the drama “Long Time No See, Glad to Have You?”
The next post was even more outrageous: Ji Mian and Xu Zhixia were bundled up like dumplings, probably trying to hide from fans and avoid being seen. Are they going to the Marriage Registry to get their license?
The post included a video of her and Xu Zhixia in black clothing walking side-by-side. Although the video was short, the two were seen walking extremely close. Forget what others think, even I almost believe that I got back together with Xu Zhixia?!
Most of the comments were from Xia Ji CP fans, consisting mainly of phrases like “We shipped it! We shipped it!”
There were also haters and fans of Xu Zhixia making snide remarks.
Ji Mian: “…” Oh wow, the buzz is back again.
Xu Zhixia also saw the Weibo post and didn’t seem to care.
However, Han Shu called.
“How were you and Ji Mian photographed walking together?” Han Shu’s tone was somewhat surprised.
“I don’t know,” Xu Zhixia couldn’t be bothered to think about it.
“Hasn’t your relationship with Ji Mian always been bad?” This was Han Shu’s real surprise.
Xu Zhixia was stunned. “Who says my relationship with her is bad?” She nearly blurted that out. She thought for a moment and changed her words: “Is it not okay for us to be walking in the same direction?”
Han Shu, knowing how easily that statement fell apart, sighed, “I can’t control you, but I hope you know the limits. Please don’t trend again; it’s bad for your image.”
“I know, I know,” Xu Zhixia hung up the phone. She looked up and thought about the video. The person in the video didn’t even look like herself. The caption clearly wrote her name, Xu Zhixia, as if afraid people wouldn’t know. Was someone deliberately taking pictures?
Since Xu Zhixia had to film a commercial, Ji Mian didn’t see her all day.
It wasn’t until the evening that she saw Xu Zhixia and her assistant slowly walking down the hotel corridor. Ji Mian greeted her and then headed to her own room.
Xu Zhixia’s assistant was also a young person who had just graduated. Once inside the room, she boldly asked, “Sister Xia, what is your relationship with Ji Mian?”
Xu Zhixia smiled coyly, “Why do you want to know, too?”
The assistant shyly scratched her head. Oh my god, that smile is too beautiful.
“Just gossiping a little.”
Xu Zhixia ignored her, looking instead at the neon lights outside the window. The exterior was filled with glowing green and red lights. She found that her current feelings were not as rejecting as they used to be. She couldn’t pinpoint the reason. She let out a long sigh, unable to articulate the confusion.

Ji Mian: Aren’t inhibitors supposed to be injections?
Xu Zhixia raised an eyebrow and smiled wickedly: “Who told you that nonsense? Hurry up and drink your medicine.”
