After Transmigrating as the Supporting Female Lead, I Got My HE with the White Moonlight - Chapter 4
After dropping Yan Muhuai at the orphanage that day, Gu Xiaoting hadn’t found an opportunity to contact her. Just as she was worrying about how to ask her out again, a message from the other party arrived first.
[Tingting, thank you for the ride the other day. Are you free in a few days? A friend gave me two movie tickets. I don’t really have any friends to talk to in the country yet. Are you free?]
[I’m free anytime. Just send me the time and location, Sister.]
Along with the reply came a screenshot of a movie introduction. Gu Xiaoting noted the title and looked it up. It turned out to be an arthouse film—very much in line with a “White Moonlight” protagonist’s taste—focusing on themes of dreams and reality.
Gu Xiaoting glanced at it with a half-smile. These kinds of movies are so fake, she thought. After all, if a dream can be realized, it isn’t called a dream anymore.
While she thought this inwardly, she didn’t let it show. She tossed aside her tablet and typed a quick reply, asking Yan Muhuai for a photo of the tickets. She then photoshopped out the showing time and seat info, leaving only the movie title, and posted it to her WeChat Moments.

She disliked people prying into her privacy, which is why she blurred the details. The post had only one purpose: to let Yan Muhuai see it.
The little red notification dot lit up instantly as Rong Bailu began bombarding her in private chat. Gu Xiaoting ignored her, waiting until she saw the person she actually wanted to see among the notifications.
[Yan Muhuai replied: Mhm, I hope so too.]
Satisfied, Gu Xiaoting tossed her phone aside and got up to find an outfit for their movie date.
The cinema was located in the bustling city center. The movie wasn’t exactly niche; the schedule was almost full, leaving only the two tickets in Yan Muhuai’s hand.
Today, Gu Xiaoting had changed into a dark gray gauze skirt. Her sweatshirt just barely covered her knees, and since she was driving, she wore high-top canvas shoes, giving her a very student-like aura.
Yan Muhuai was waiting for her at the entrance. Gu Xiaoting quickened her pace toward her. “I kept you waiting, Sister.”
“I just arrived as well,” Yan Muhuai said. “Do we need popcorn? Or drinks?”
Gu Xiaoting looked around. “Wait for me here, Sister. I’ll go buy them.” Before Yan Muhuai could decline, she had already dashed off to the counter to buy popcorn and orange soda.
Yan Muhuai waited at the spot. Standing in the middle of the cinema entrance—the area with the highest foot traffic—many people cast admiring glances her way as they passed. As she stood there with her arms crossed, a voice came from behind her.
“Xiaohuai? What a coincidence, you’re here too?”
Jiang Chengwei’s face wore a forced look of surprise mixed with ill-concealed joy. His eyes fell on the tickets in her hand. “You’re seeing this movie too? What a coincidence. I just tried to buy a ticket, but they’re all sold out. Xiaohuai, are you here alone?”
The implication was obvious. Yan Muhuai’s expression turned cold. She wasn’t particularly close to the person who gave her the tickets, but now it seemed that person was very well-acquainted with Jiang Chengwei.
She frowned and spoke to his expectant face: “Mr. Jiang, we aren’t close. Please don’t call me that. Call me Miss Yan.”
Seeing her displeasure, Jiang Chengwei quickly corrected himself. “Apologies, I got excited and forgot again. Is Miss Yan here alone?”
“—No, she isn’t.”
A playful, mocking voice rang out. A figure slipped behind Yan Muhuai, casually swiping the two tickets from her hand while handing her the popcorn and soda with the other.
Gu Xiaoting naturally hooked her arm into Yan Muhuai’s, pulling her toward the ticket gate without looking back. Jiang Chengwei froze and tried to chase after them, but he was blocked by the staff.
“Sir, I’m sorry, you can’t enter without a ticket.”
He watched the two figures walk away. Gu Xiaoting even turned her head back slightly, her lips curving into a smirk full of irony and provocation.
Jiang Chengwei shouted: “Gu Xiaoting! Gu Xiaoting! Get back here!”
However, no matter how much he yelled, the person who used to be completely submissive to him didn’t turn back.
“Hey, uncle, are you going in or not? Those two beauties are long gone. If you want to hit on them, at least buy a ticket first.”
“Exactly. Dressed so fancy but can’t even afford a movie ticket.”
“The show is starting, move out of the way!”
For the first time, Jiang Chengwei failed to maintain his hypocritical mask. He stepped aside, his face turning ashen. He couldn’t understand it. How did Gu Xiaoting dare not stop? How did she end up with Yan Muhuai? Was it because of him?
This woman, he thought, she’ll never truly give up on me.
“Aren’t you going to look back?” Yan Muhuai couldn’t help but ask, given how loud the shouting was behind them.
Gu Xiaoting let go of her arm and stood straight, not answering directly.
Yan Muhuai asked, “He knows you?”
“Ah,” Gu Xiaoting said softly. “I suppose. I told you, Sister, he’s the type to pester anyone he thinks looks good. I can’t help it; it’s not like I can change my face, right?” She made a casual joke of it.
Hearing her describe herself as “looking good” without blushing or skipping a beat, Yan Muhuai let out a light laugh. The sound was crisp yet tender, softer than the stem of a flower.
“What are you laughing at, Sister?”
“Nothing.” Yan Muhuai covered her mouth and laughed a bit more before stopping. “You are indeed very good-looking.”
“Mm-hm. If someone is good-looking, they should have some self-awareness. Anyway, here’s the theater. Let’s go in.”
The seats were a “couple’s pair,” partitioned into a semi-private space where whispering wouldn’t disturb others.
The film was very inspirational, but Gu Xiaoting watched with little interest. She didn’t believe in such things, so she naturally didn’t find it appealing.
The story began with the female protagonist escaping from a research institute, traveling thousands of kilometers to a slum. She climbed up from the slums step by step, becoming increasingly cold and ruthless. By the time she reached the top, she had completely changed; she was no longer the girl full of hope. She destroyed the research institute, but in the end, she became exactly the kind of person she used to hate most within those walls. She once had dreams, but they were cruelly shattered by reality.
The final scene showed the protagonist swirling a wine glass, ordering her subordinates to “deal with” a traitor.
The multicolored light from the projector reflected on the screen and then fell into Gu Xiaoting’s eyes, making her clear pupils shimmer with shifting colors until the light faded into darkness.
This was the sight Yan Muhuai saw when she turned to look at her.
Snap.
The lights came on instantly, and the audience began to file out. Gu Xiaoting snapped back to reality, grabbed the soda bottle, and stood up to leave with her. “What did you think of the ending, Sister? Personally, I found it a bit unsatisfying. I thought the protagonist would eventually be redeemed by someone or killed—destroyed just like she destroyed the institute.”
“She wouldn’t be,” Yan Muhuai said.
“Oh? What do you think then, Sister?”
“I think she wouldn’t,” Yan Muhuai repeated, her voice carrying a rare note of serious sincerity. “I think it’s good. No matter what she became in the end, I think it’s good. There’s no specific reason… if I had to say one, it’s probably because she is the sole protagonist. So, I am biased enough to believe that everything she does is good.”
Gu Xiaoting’s somewhat distracted gaze faltered. She suddenly laughed again. “So you’re a ‘protagonist-supporter,’ Sister. No wonder you feel that way.”
She smiled, withdrawing her gaze from the distance. “—But I think she deserves to die. If you commit a crime, you should be punished.” Before Yan Muhuai could comment, she added, “Whatever, there’s no point obsessing over it. It’s just a movie, not real life.”
Leaving the cinema, Gu Xiaoting received an urgent call from the company about a contract that needed her review. She regretfully said goodbye to Yan Muhuai.
As she checked her rearview mirror, she caught a glimpse of a somewhat disheveled figure. That scumbag hasn’t left yet? Gu Xiaoting raised an eyebrow. Either he was waiting for Yan Muhuai—how devoted—or he was waiting to settle the score with her.
With that thought, Gu Xiaoting rolled down her window and called out to the not-yet-distant Yan Muhuai, “Sister, I’m heading out! I had a great time today!”
In the mirror, the scumbag quickened his pace. Through that small pane of glass, Gu Xiaoting locked eyes with him. In the next second, she floored the accelerator, whispered a low “Goodbye” with a smirk, and sped off in a cloud of dust, leaving him behind in disbelief.
After finishing up at the office, Gu Xiaoting made a stop at the Gu family home. Her parents were there; she gave a casual wave and, ignoring her father’s ashen face, went straight upstairs.
A moment later, the original owner’s younger sister, Gu Xiaoxiao, followed her up. Gu Xiaoting was preparing for a shower when the door was pushed open without warning. A seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl walked in brazenly.
“Sis, why are you home today? Did someone bully you outside? You have to tell Mom and Dad.” Her eyes were full of ill-concealed schadenfreude. “Even though Dad doesn’t really like you, you still have me.”
Gu Xiaoting ignored her. Seeing that the door was closed, she began rummaging through the wardrobe for clothes.
Gu Xiaoxiao leaned in, her eyes darting around. “So, Sis, I heard… you and Brother Chengwei broke up?” She started rambling to herself. “If you ask me, it’s for the best. Brother Chengwei doesn’t like you anyway; pestering him wasn’t going to work. Now that his first love is back, it’s just awkward for you, Sis.”
Gu Xiaoting had already started taking off her clothes, but the girl kept chattering away, completely oblivious. It was clear what kind of life the original owner had lived in this house.
“—Get out,” she said coldly.
Seeing her flare up, Gu Xiaoxiao assumed it was shame turned to anger. She immediately retorted, “Sis, I’m saying this for your own good. How can you be so ungrateful? I’m your sister; would I ever hurt you?”
In the past, the original owner would have immediately forgiven her. But the person standing there now was Gu Xiaoting.
Gu Xiaoting threw her discarded shirt onto the floor and turned around with her pajamas still unbuttoned, leaning her hand against the wardrobe door. “If you’re done talking, get out. I’m taking a shower.”
She looked over expressionlessly. Her shirt-style pajamas were loosely draped, the two rows of buttons hanging vertically, half-hiding her proud curves which were clearly outlined by the thin fabric.
Gu Xiaoxiao: “…”
The underdeveloped Gu Xiaoxiao clutched her own chest and stomped out in a huff.
