After Transmigrating, I Became the Most Cowardly Kid (GL) - Chapter 17
Shang Yuan was horrified by this unexpectedly mushy statement and broke out in goosebumps.
After a stunned moment, he asked, “Little sister, whose young master has caught your eye? Bring him over and let me see.”
Shang Han, who was rarely sincere with him, couldn’t help but roll her eyes at his response: “Shallow.”
Shang Yuan pressed on: “Liking a voice but not liking the person—does that still count as shallow?”
Shang Han didn’t want to engage further, quickly walked out of the hall, and rode off on her motorcycle.
She heard it was going to rain and get cooler the day after tomorrow, but the weather these two days was especially hot and stuffy. Even at night, despite the strong winds created by her speed on the relatively empty road, Shang Han was sweating profusely.
Is that Chi Zhihuai hot right now?
She checked the time—the girl should be studying now.
Her family must have the air conditioning on. She didn’t need to worry about such things.
But still…
Shang Han recalled seeing her in the hallway this morning, wanting to talk to her but not knowing what to say.
The usual way ordinary classmates greet each other didn’t suit her. Even if she greeted Chi Zhihuai normally, everyone else would look like they had seen a ghost.
Everyone probably thinks there shouldn’t be any ordinary classmates who are friends with me in this school.
So, in the end, Shang Han chose to grab her candy. It allowed her to speak to her and also prevented others from overthinking the interaction.
Plus, she got to eat the candy Chi Zhihuai bought.
But was Chi Zhihuai scared?
Shang Han pondered as she stopped the bike. She popped a White Rabbit milk candy into her mouth and sent a message.
ZZZ: I heard Shang Han took something from you today.
Chi Zhihuai was taking a shower at the time, so she saw the message twenty minutes later.
It’s Sister Z.
She smiled and replied: She was just kidding around.
Shang Han had returned to her apartment by this time. Seeing the message, the strained line of her mouth gradually curved into a smile.
ZZZ: I’m glad you weren’t scared.
Chi Zhihuai: I wasn’t [cute emoji].
Shang Han didn’t know what else to say. After thinking for a long time, she got on the treadmill.
She ran for an hour, then stepped off, hands braced on her knees. Sweat dripped from her hair as she breathed in and out.
After catching her breath, she got up to shower, then emerged, put on a pair of black-rimmed glasses, and sat down to read.
Another hour passed. She closed the book, resting her glasses on the cover.
The cover showed a color image with white text, the title striking: Neuroscience.
On Tuesday morning, Chi Zhihuai received an extraordinary number of greetings.
She awkwardly dealt with the concern, sat down at her desk, and reviewed the English vocabulary she had memorized the previous night using the song lyric method.
The words she had started with were still fresh in her memory, but the more words she memorized, the more confused her memory became. She had to constantly review to reinforce the retention.
The day passed without incident. Chi Zhihuai walked out of the classroom, feeling a bit out of sorts.
Every day since she started school, she had encountered Shang Han in various ways.
But today, Shang Han hadn’t come to school, and she felt a little empty inside.
Could she be injured from a fight? Should I go visit her at the hospital?
Chi Zhihuai suspected she might be a bit of a masochist. She had a headache when Shang Han showed up, unsure how to handle her, yet she actually missed her when she didn’t come.
Developing a habit might not take 21 days; a week could be enough.
On the way home, she kept looking out the window, seeing neither Shang Han’s figure nor the distinctive sound of her motorcycle.
While studying that evening, Chi Zhihuai wrote a few problems, then looked at her phone again.
Suddenly, the phone vibrated.
It was a text message from Shang Han.
Shang Han: How was school today?
Seeing this parental concern, Chi Zhihuai paused, then replied: Very good.
Shang Han: Oh.
“…”
What was this “Oh” supposed to mean? Did she want her to continue the reply or not!
Chi Zhihuai put down her phone. Not long after, it rang again.
Shang Han: I had some business to take care of today.
“…”
So what? Why tell me that!
Chi Zhihuai stubbornly refused to admit she felt even a little relieved.
Ahem, anyway… it was good that she wasn’t injured in a fight.
She replied awkwardly: Good. Did everything go smoothly?
Shang Han: Smoothly.
Chi Zhihuai tapped the desk with her finger, feeling their text exchange was so old-fashioned.
What kind of friends still communicated by text message? Didn’t everyone use social apps now?
So she asked: Do you have any social media accounts?
Shang Han: No.
Chi Zhihuai: …Okay.
She was resigned. In today’s rapidly developing information age, someone actually didn’t use social media.
Shang Han must be a total relic.
Chi Zhihuai imagined Shang Han as an old scholar with round, wire-rimmed spectacles and giggled quietly.
She knew that given her persona, she shouldn’t chat too much, so she quickly added another reply: I’m going to study now [cute emoji].
Shang Han: Good luck.
Chi Zhihuai’s mood subtly improved. She picked up her pen and continued solving problems.
The next morning, as she passed the back door of Class Six, she couldn’t resist peeking inside.
…Huh?
If she remembered correctly, Shang Han had a designated desk in the very back of the classroom, but now… the desk was gone.
Even the chair was gone. The back of the classroom was empty, looking somewhat deserted.
Chi Zhihuai’s heart sank. Was Shang Han not coming to school anymore?
She wished she had asked her yesterday.
She stood there, lost in thought for a moment, then decided she was probably overthinking things.
Maybe the desk was just temporarily moved somewhere else.
Feeling uneasy and afraid of her classmates noticing her strangeness, she hurried back to her classroom.
Was Shang Han really not coming to school?
If she came and saw her seat suddenly gone… she would be unhappy.
Chi Zhihuai suspected she must be about to get her period, otherwise, why was she so sentimental?
It could also be because the weather outside was gloomy, affecting everyone’s mood.
The class changed seats every week. Chi Zhihuai had moved to a window seat this week. With a slight turn of her head, she could see the overcast sky, the heavy clouds looking like they could fall at any moment.
After the second class, it started to pour. Water quickly pooled on the ground, and raindrops smashed into the puddles, splashing large blossoms of water.
A cheer erupted in the classroom—no calisthenics during the next break!
The break time was long. Everyone was happily anticipating a longer rest, but the homeroom teacher came in and said, “The English teacher said she’ll be testing you on the last unit’s vocabulary during the calisthenics time. I suggest you all cram.”
The entire class groaned. The students who had been rushing toward the door filed back, reluctantly sitting down with miserable expressions.
Chi Zhihuai’s heart pounded rapidly.
An exam… another exam!
The original owner’s English grades were excellent. She couldn’t break her persona!
Yet, amidst the tension, she felt a slight relief that she had reviewed the last unit’s vocabulary a few times over the past two days.
Chi Zhihuai quickly pulled out her English book for a final review.
Chen Qin lamented quietly beside her: “I’m screwed. I haven’t even reviewed yet.”
Chi Zhihuai never thought she’d have the opportunity to teach someone how to study: “Quickly go over it once now. The memory will be fresh.”
The entire class buried their heads in their books, reviewing vocabulary. It was supposed to be a break, but Class Seven looked like they were in a self-study session.
A person standing at the back door saw this scene, then turned and left.
The homeroom teacher saw that everyone had settled down and left contentedly, but as he reached the back door, he nearly slipped.
Clutching the doorknob, he looked down.
All his students were inside the classroom; no one had gone out.
So why was there a puddle of water here?!
