After Transmigrating, I Became the Most Cowardly Kid (GL) - Chapter 4
Chi Zhihuai was incredibly excited internally, but she dared not show any sign of triumph on her face.
The class representatives came over to collect homework in turn. The little person jumping in Chi Zhihuai’s heart suddenly froze. She hastily tugged at her deskmate’s school uniform sleeve: “Chen Qin, can I check the answers with you?”
Chen Qin’s best rank was top ten in the class, while Chi Zhihuai was always top three. Hearing her deskmate say this, Chen Qin opened her eyes in surprise: “Did I hear that right? You want to check answers with me?”
“I fell behind on so much work. I taught myself yesterday, and I’m not confident…” Chi Zhihuai looked at her expectantly, speaking with genuine feeling.
“Okay.” Chen Qin organized her English papers and handed them over.
Chi Zhihuai had excellent eyesight. She quickly compared the papers a few times, feeling slightly relieved.
The multiple-choice answers were mostly the same. Chen Qin’s English was decent, so her answers should be fine.
Chi Zhihuai confidently handed in the homework. She took out a piece of chocolate from her schoolbag, placed it on the desk, and slowly pushed it over to Chen Qin with her index finger.
A small favor to increase her deskmate’s goodwill, as she would mostly rely on her for homework help in all subjects in the future.
Seeing her deskmate pleasantly pick up the chocolate, Chi Zhihuai curved her eyes and said, “Thank you.”
Chen Qin, who was already in a slightly bad mood this morning, brightened up upon receiving the small gift.
She looked at Chi Zhihuai, who had already started organizing her desk. Chen Qin placed the chocolate in the space in front of the book stand and suddenly felt that her deskmate was quite nice after all.
They had been deskmates since the start of this semester. In the first year of high school, they barely spoke. In Chen Qin’s eyes, Chi Zhihuai was just a quiet study machine who only spoke to the girls sitting near her and ignored everyone else.
Chen Qin had worried that they wouldn’t get along this semester and always looked for opportunities to build a rapport, but before she could, Chi Zhihuai had the accident.
To be honest, Chen Qin felt Chi Zhihuai seemed a little different after the incident.
The subtle distance between them was still there, but the other girl seemed to be taking more initiative.
Chen Qin smoothed her bangs.
In any case, this discovery made her happy.
The math teacher walked onto the podium, tapped the blackboard with the heel of his palm, and shouted, “Homework collectors, hurry up! I’m starting the lecture now.”
The pace quickened immediately below. Since the math teacher was notorious for extending class time, if they didn’t start quickly, they might lose their break. Chi Zhihuai opened her math book and tried to concentrate on the lesson, but unfortunately failed.
Forget it. Since she couldn’t listen anyway, she might as well think hard about how to legitimately approach some students who didn’t like to study.
Chi Zhihuai searched her memory and suddenly thought of a good candidate.
She had a junior high classmate named Tang Chen. He frequently skipped class and caused trouble in junior high, went to a vocational high school after graduation, and was rumored to have become the top dog at his school.
To be honest, they hadn’t interacted much in junior high, but Tang Chen had helped her once before. At the time, she was cornered by thugs demanding money. Tang Chen happened to pass by and said, “You dare mess with someone from my class?” and the thugs immediately ran off.
This was the original owner’s only interaction with a “bad boy” in her seventeen years.
Chi Zhihuai rested her chin on her hand, lost in thought. The math teacher on the podium narrowed his eyes and suddenly called her name: “Chi Zhihuai.”
She froze, then shot to her feet.
“What did I just talk about? Repeat it.”
“…” Chi Zhihuai looked at the notes on the board—Absolute Value Inequalities.
She lowered her head, scanned her book, and realized she hadn’t even turned to that page.
…So what are Absolute Value Inequalities?!
She couldn’t answer, so she had to find another way. Chi Zhihuai bit her lower lip and looked timidly at the teacher: “I’m sorry, teacher, I didn’t follow…”
Before she could finish, the math teacher interrupted, “If you don’t know, just stand there, so you won’t be messing around and spacing out instead of listening properly.”
Chi Zhihuai didn’t actually mind standing—she’d been punished with standing plenty of times before—but the situation was different now. She had to soften her image a bit.
She kept her head down and forced herself not to blink, trying to make her eyes look redder.
After all, the original owner had never suffered such public humiliation before.
The math teacher looked at her. She was a good student he admired; a little scare should be enough.
Seeing her with red eyes, seemingly aware of her mistake, he was about to tell her to sit down when her deskmate, Chen Qin, stood up.
Chen Qin raised her hand halfway and asked cautiously, “Teacher, can I answer this question for her? If I get it right, please let her sit down.”
These kids these days…
The math teacher raised a hand to wave them down, saying, “You don’t need to answer. Both of you sit down. I’ll explain these two theorems again. Pay attention this time.”
Chi Zhihuai sat down, looking “deeply wronged,” and then shot a grateful look at Chen Qin, who was pretending to read her book.
The injustice was fake, but the gratitude was real. It wasn’t just gratitude for saving her, but for the willingness to protect her.
Chi Zhihuai was used to protecting others before. She hadn’t expected anyone to want to protect her now that she was a little coward.
It turned out Chen Qin was quite loyal.
So, these well-behaved, studious students weren’t all snobs with their eyes aimed too high.
The math teacher was still keeping an eye on her, so Chi Zhihuai shrunk her neck, decided to postpone the Tang Chen matter, and concentrated on listening.
When the bell rang for the end of class, the teacher, unusually, didn’t extend the lesson. A few boys screamed in joy and ran out of the classroom, roughhousing.
Chi Zhihuai usually didn’t leave the classroom unless she needed the restroom. Her deskmate from last semester asked if she needed to go to the bathroom. She shook her head, then rested her head on the desk to think about Tang Chen.
She had a target, so how should she make contact?
Actively going to the vocational high school to find him was impossible. She would have to find a way online.
Chi Zhihuai rested her head on one hand, using the other to occasionally fiddle with the sticky notes on the side of the book stand.
Suddenly, a brilliant idea struck her.
Chi Zhihuai mentally slapped her thigh.
Damn, why am I so smart?
The students in Class Six of the second year were still shrouded in a low-pressure atmosphere today.
Shang Han hadn’t actually said much after entering the classroom. She had just been sitting in the back row playing with her phone.
But the news that she had nearly caved someone’s head in recently had spread throughout the school. No one wasn’t afraid of her. Seeing her show up for two consecutive days, everyone looked like they had seen the King of Hell.
The homeroom teacher had a terrible headache. He rushed to the academic office early in the morning, looking for ways to handle the situation.
The reason Shang Han’s enrollment was still maintained in Class Six was mainly because the administration had assured the teacher that Shang Han rarely came to school, and even if she did, it would only be for a few hours before she quickly left.
Who knew what possessed this menace to suddenly attend school for two days straight, unsettling the students of Class Six and making it impossible for them to focus?
However, the dean couldn’t do anything either. Shang Han’s parents had funded a laboratory building for the school, and they were major philanthropists in the city. The school could only tolerate and placate this troublemaker.
After the first class break, the homeroom teacher, who had been running around looking for leaders, returned to the class worriedly. Seeing Shang Han in the back row gave him a massive headache.
She sensed his gaze and briefly looked up. Their eyes met. The teacher sighed, walked to the podium, tapped the board, and said, “What are you all doing? Class is starting soon, get your books ready.”
Shang Han’s lips tightened. She suddenly got up and walked out of the classroom with her long legs.
Seeing her leave, the people in the classroom collectively let out a sigh of relief.
The few boys in the class who had been beaten by Shang Han personally straightened their backs a bit, finally feeling more at ease.
When the class bell rang, Shang Han, who was wandering in the hallway, stopped, turned around, walked to the back door of Class Seven, and stood sideways.
Chi Zhihuai was not tall and sat in the third row. From this angle, he could see a dark, round back of a head.
Shang Han squinted, watching the teacher on the podium write “Lesson 6” on the board.
Students in the back row sensed the gaze from the back door, assuming the homeroom teacher was checking on them, and all sat up stick-straight.
Not wanting to be discovered, Shang Han took two steps back and continued to stare at that little dark head.
Inside the classroom, Chi Zhihuai was resting her chin on her hand, feeling the English letters on the blackboard twisting and turning, seemingly transforming into musical notes that drifted into her ears, playing a lullaby.
I really can’t stay up studying late!
Chi Zhihuai decided to utilize all of her lunch break and the afternoon self-study time. No sleeping or spacing out! She had to hurry up and do her homework so she could go to bed early!
The teacher on the stage seemed to be discussing some key grammar, and Chi Zhihuai dazedly followed along and took notes, but the more she wrote, the sleepier she got.
I can’t sleep, absolutely can’t sleep. The original owner never slept in class…
“Dong!“
Suddenly, her head hit the desk heavily. Chi Zhihuai grimaced and sat up, her mind fully awake.
Oh my god, she actually fell asleep… This… this wouldn’t break her persona, would it?
She cautiously looked up. Sure enough, the English teacher was looking at her, his gaze filled with both annoyance and astonishment.
He probably couldn’t figure out why this good student would sleep in class.
Chen Qin next to her wanted to explain, saying Chi Zhihuai had just been discharged from the hospital and wasn’t feeling well. However, before she could speak, someone knocked on the classroom door.
Shang Han stood at the doorway, a slight smirk playing on her lips. Her finger was still resting on the door, occasionally tapping it with her knuckle.
The English teacher frowned and asked, “Can I help you?”
“No, I’m just bored. You guys carry on.”
Despite the speaker being the infamous Shang Han, some people in the class quietly chuckled.
Chi Zhihuai looked toward the doorway along with everyone else and saw Shang Han walk away without hesitation after giving her answer, truly looking bored.
The class’s attention was completely diverted by the unwelcome visitor. The English teacher rolled his eyes at the door’s direction, momentarily forgetting about Chi Zhihuai’s slip-up, and returned to explaining the text.
Chi Zhihuai sighed in relief. Phew, she had saved her life.
Safely waiting until school dismissal, Chi Zhihuai weakly got into the car, letting out a huge yawn.
Dad Chi turned his head to look at her: “Are you tired today?”
Chi Zhihuai replied while fastening her seatbelt, “No, I’m not.”
“Your mom made pork rib and corn soup today.”
“That’s great.”
Chi Zhihuai was not good at this kind of family small talk. While Dad Chi backed up the car, she pulled out an English vocabulary book and pretended to study it.
It was still summer, and the car was stuffy. Chi Zhihuai disliked the feeling of air conditioning blowing directly on her face, so she opened the car window a quarter of the way down.
The road in front of the school was particularly hard to navigate. The car stopped and started constantly. Just as they finally reached the main road, they unluckily hit a red light.
The car stopped again. Chi Zhihuai suddenly heard the sound of a motorcycle, so she put down her vocabulary book and looked out the window.
A black Cafe Racer-style motorcycle was stopped on the right side of their car. The rider’s helmet shone with a sharp glare in the setting sun.
Woah, cool.
Chi Zhihuai used to like this kind of vintage motorcycle with low handlebars. She couldn’t help but look at it admiringly. The rider noticed her gaze and turned their head to look back at her.
The red light ended. The motorcyclist turned their head forward, hunched slightly, and roared off. The black jacket they wore billowed in the wind, flying freely in the air.
That’s nice. She wished she could ride such a flamboyant motorcycle out.
Chi Zhihuai was about to look away but remembered something. She leaned forward to look at the person who was moving farther and farther away from her.
Wait, where had she seen that jacket before?
Her brain quickly searched her memory and successfully retrieved the image of Shang Han she saw at the classroom door this morning.
Connecting the showy motorcycle to Shang Han’s face, Chi Zhihuai’s little heart gave an embarrassing flutter.
Oh my god, that’s too handsome!
But, Shang Han was in the second year of high school. She might not even be eighteen yet.
Could she be… driving without a license?!
