After Transmigrating, I Became the Most Cowardly Kid (GL) - Chapter 5
Chi Zhihuai felt that Shang Han was unlike any rogue or delinquent student she had ever known.
After being a rebellious student for so many years, she felt a poignant sense that she couldn’t even out-rebel someone else for the first time.
At least she wouldn’t risk her life driving without a motorcycle license just to show off. Apart from fighting, she was still quite law-abiding.
Thinking that way, she seemed quite well-behaved, didn’t she?
Of course, now she was even more well-behaved—unbelievably so.
After dinner, Chi Zhihuai burped and returned to her bedroom. She furtively pulled out her phone and opened her junior high class group chat.
Her finger hovered over Tang Chen’s name for a moment before finally clicking to add him as a friend.
Putting the phone down, Chi Zhihuai pulled out the unfinished homework from her backpack, sighed, and buried herself in the work.
She had gotten a lot wrong on yesterday’s English paper, but thankfully, the English teacher said she had deliberately included tricky questions that were designed to trip up not just her, but the entire class.
So, today’s homework was to organize the knowledge points from yesterday’s errors and memorize all the common mistake areas.
Chi Zhihuai seemed to have a feud with the 26 letters of the alphabet today. She started feeling sleepy as soon as she began organizing, so she picked up her phone to play a match-three game to keep herself awake.
Suddenly, a notification popped up on the screen—”Knight Tang” had accepted her friend request.
Chi Zhihuai immediately sat up straight.
Knight Tang: You were in my junior high class?
Chi Zhihuai: Hello, yes. My name is Chi Zhihuai, we were classmates.
Knight Tang: Oh, what’s up?
Chi Zhihuai rubbed her hands, shouting internally—I’m sorry, Shang Han, but I have to use you as a topic now!
Chi Zhihuai: I wanted to ask if you know someone named Shang Han? I heard she has a bad temper, and she seems to have her eye on me recently. I’m a little scared and wanted to ask if I did something wrong. I really don’t know who else to ask, so I’m sorry to bother you…
The opposite side was silent for a long time. Chi Zhihuai couldn’t help but glance at her phone while organizing her papers, her heart pounding.
Was her tone too cowardly and silly? Would he just ignore her?
Please don’t, friend. We were classmates in junior high. Cut me some slack, will you?
After waiting for more than ten minutes, the other side finally replied.
Knight Tang: Why don’t you ask her directly?
Chi Zhihuai: I’m… a little afraid.
Knight Tang: I’ll introduce you to someone. She knows Shang Han well.
Huh.
Chi Zhihuai’s original intention was to chat more with Tang Chen to build a relationship, and then gradually and naturally transition into being a little “bad” with him. She hadn’t expected Tang Chen to push her to someone else.
Whatever, Shang Han’s friend should also be a rebellious girl. Since her goal was just to learn how to be “bad,” who she learned from didn’t really matter.
Chi Zhihuai obediently added the number he sent her and then said “Thank you.”
Unfortunately, the other party did not reply again.
With Target No. 1 temporarily out of commission, Chi Zhihuai focused her attention on Target No. 2—the girl whose nickname was “ZZZ.”
“ZZZ” instantly accepted her friend request. Chi Zhihuai looked at the chat interface and sent a “Hello.”
A few seconds later, “ZZZ” replied with “Hello.”
Chi Zhihuai typed out a few lines, thought better of it, deleted them, and spent a long time drafting her message. However, the other party sent the next message first.
ZZZ: What do you want to ask me?
Chi Zhihuai: It’s like this: I don’t know if I offended Shang Han, and I was hoping you could help me ask.
Chi Zhihuai: Oh, I’m Chi Zhihuai from Class 7, Grade 2, at No. 1 High School.
Within a few seconds, the reply came.
ZZZ: You didn’t offend her. She was just passing by.
Chi Zhihuai: Then could you possibly help me ask why she came into our classroom to look for me yesterday? I didn’t know her before.
Chi Zhihuai: I’m sorry, I don’t mean anything by it, I’m just curious…
ZZZ: She was probably just wandering around. You don’t need to worry.
Chi Zhihuai stared at the screen, thinking that the answer wasn’t what she cared about anyway; incurring a favor was enough.
Chi Zhihuai: That puts my mind at ease! Thank you for helping me ask around. Let me buy you a bubble tea~
(She actually wanted to buy “Sister Z” a beer.)
Alas, the persona doesn’t allow it, so I can only settle for bubble tea.
ZZZ: No need, it was nothing.
Chi Zhihuai: Which school are you from, classmate? I’ll bring it over tomorrow. Thank you so much~
She must drink it! I must buy it for her!
Chi Zhihuai tested the boundaries of the system’s warning, even resorting to persistent shamelessness.
Chi Zhihuai: I know a place that makes really good cheese foam tea. What fruit do you like, classmate? Their strawberry and mango flavors are both delicious [cute emoji].
The other party was silent for a few minutes, then sent the address of a vocational high school.
ZZZ: Noon, Yixin Supermarket at the school gate. Strawberry.
Chi Zhihuai: Okay~ Can you drink it cold? Or should I ask for no ice?
ZZZ: Normal ice.
Chi Zhihuai: Okay, thank you!
ZZZ: Mhm.
Nice! She was one step closer to becoming “bad”!
Chi Zhihuai was delighted inside, and she felt fully motivated to organize her knowledge points.
The next day at noon, the girls she usually ate with came to find her. Chi Zhihuai tucked her student ID and bus card into her pocket and said softly, “I have something to do. I won’t be eating lunch today.”
Lunch break was only an hour. It took twenty minutes to get from No. 1 High School to the vocational high school. Luckily, she had used her phone during the last break in the restroom to order the drink for store pickup, otherwise she’d have to wait in a long queue.
Chi Zhihuai scurried to the bubble tea shop, carefully carried her cheese strawberry fruit tea, and then scurried onto the bus.
After finally arriving at the vocational high school, she carried the cool bubble tea in one hand and shielded her eyes from the blinding sun with the other, walking toward the Yixin Supermarket that “ZZZ” had mentioned.
Once she reached the spot, she messaged Z.
Chi Zhihuai: Hello, I’m here. Are you free to come and pick it up?
She put away her phone, looked around, and took refuge in the shade under the supermarket sign.
Whew—it was boiling hot.
Chi Zhihuai looked down at the bubble tea in her hand. Thankfully, the shop had packed the cheese foam and fruit tea separately. Otherwise, after all this scrambling, it would probably be an unrecognizable mess when she handed it over.
Her phone vibrated. She pulled it out and saw a message from Tang Chen.
Knight Tang: She asked me to get it. Wait two minutes.
Chi Zhihuai: Okay! Okay!
After replying, she bought a bottle of Coke from the supermarket, taking the opportunity to butter up her Target No. 1.
Tang Chen was punctual. Exactly two minutes later, he appeared at the supermarket entrance, followed by two underlings.
Not bad, quite a presence.
Chi Zhihuai lowered her head, shyly and nervously handing over the takeout bag and the Coke: “Thank you. Please, please have this Coke.”
One of the underlings next to him gave a weird yell and jeered, “Yo, Brother Chen is awesome! A girl from No. 1 High School is bringing you Coke.”
“Go, stop with that crap,” Tang Chen took the items. Seeing the takeout bag, he sneered, “Why didn’t you just order delivery instead of coming all the way yourself?”
This is so I could have close contact with you guys! Chi Zhihuai thought this, but timidly put her hands behind her back, lowered her head, and said, “This shows sincerity.”
Tang Chen laughed: “Fine, sincerity received. You can go now.”
Chi Zhihuai’s face was flushed from the sun, which made her look genuinely shy. She quickly nodded twice, turned, and left.
Tang Chen lifted the bubble tea bag, looked at it, and then called someone on his phone.
“Boss, I got it… Mhm, she left… Huh? Oh, okay.”
Tang Chen’s expression shifted back and forth. He handed the bubble tea bag to the underling behind him: “Protect this with your life. If a single drop spills, I’ll twist your head off.”
“…” The underling felt a chill down his neck and held the bubble tea bag with both hands, rigid and motionless.
Tang Chen walked into the supermarket and pulled a watermelon-flavored ice cream from the freezer.
His ex-girlfriend loved this ice cream. Tang Chen bought it out of habit, realized what he had done while paying, and was so annoyed that he kicked the column outside the door.
Ptooey! Who the hell wants to remember what ice cream she likes!
Under the scorching sun, Chi Zhihuai fanned herself with her hands, half-walking, half-running toward the bus stop.
It—is—so—hot!
I should have bought a bottle of ice-cold Coke for myself earlier!
Chi Zhihuai imagined the feeling of the soda’s dense bubbles exploding in her mouth, closed her eyes, and pretended she was drinking ice-cold Coke.
Suddenly, it felt cool in front of her, as if a chill was really hitting her face.
Chi Zhihuai opened her eyes and saw a cute watermelon pattern. Looking up, she saw the tall Tang Chen with a sour expression on his face, as if someone owed him eight million dollars.
“It’s hot. She told me to buy you an ice cream.”
The cold ice cream was shoved into her hand. Chi Zhihuai only had time to say “Thank you,” then watched him swagger away.
She was stunned for a few seconds. She tore open the wrapper and took a bite. The sweet ice cream slowly melted in her mouth, seeping into her limbs and bones, making her shiver with comfort.
Ah, if only it had been an ice-cold beer, it would have been even better!
Chi Zhihuai happily ate the ice cream on the bus. She sat by the window and let the wind blow on her for a while, cooling down significantly.
When she arrived at the school gate, the guard checked student IDs. She reached into her pocket and suddenly froze.
Damn it! She had lost her student ID!
She recalled that when she took the bus back, she only had her bus card left in her pocket. However, as someone who usually scaled the wall to enter and exit the campus, she hadn’t paid any attention to the student ID at the time.
After recalling and reasoning, Chi Zhihuai figured her student ID must have been lost at the Yixin Supermarket.
But she couldn’t possibly go back for it now; she had class in the afternoon…
Facing the serious face of the security guard uncle, she pretended to panic, searching her pockets frantically, and finally said pitifully, “Uncle, I really am a student here. Chi Zhihuai, Class 7, Grade 2. My homeroom teacher is Mr. Feng.”
The guard scanned her up and down twice, then opened the gate.
Thanking the guard, Chi Zhihuai quickly slipped through the gate and ran toward the academic building.
She was going to be late! Ahhh!
Why was the school gate so far from the academic building, ahhh!
As the warning bell rang, Chi Zhihuai, panting heavily, weakly returned to her seat.
Finally…
She arrived…
Chi Zhihuai pressed her face against the desk, feeling like her soul had floated away.
After all that rushing around during lunch, she hadn’t even had time to eat a single bite of food. After this class ended, she was definitely going to the small supermarket on the first floor to buy the most expensive bread to reward herself!
But then again, all this effort was worth it. As long as she could survive, she would put up with even more trouble.
Ah, in fact, she did need to go back to the vocational high school for one more troublesome trip.
Wuwuwu, my student ID!
Her deskmate, Chen Qin, looked at her. While the teacher was still organizing his lesson plan, she whispered, “Where did you go at noon? Why are you so hot?”
“I was anxious, so I went to find a junior high classmate,” Chi Zhihuai told the truth. “The classmate helped me ask Shang Han, and it turned out she was just passing by and wasn’t intentionally paying attention to me or anything.”
Chen Qin’s eyes widened slightly: “You actually went to ask? But it’s good that everything’s fine.”
Chi Zhihuai nodded and pulled out her chemistry book.
This class included a lecture and a lab experiment. The teacher demonstrated at the front, then allowed students to come up and try in groups.
Chi Zhihuai’s stomach was uneasy. Smelling the chemical reagents in the air, her stomach ache seemed to worsen.
When it was their group’s turn, Chen Qin noticed her distress, nudged her, and whispered, “What’s wrong?”
Chi Zhihuai’s face was pale. She pointed to her abdomen and mouthed, “Stomach ache.”
Chen Qin pursed her lips, raised her hand, and said, “Teacher, Chi Zhihuai has a stomach ache. I’ll take her to the infirmary.”
After getting permission from the teacher, Chen Qin helped her deskmate up. Chi Zhihuai, however, waved her off and whispered, “Help me take notes. I can go by myself.”
She left the classroom alone. With every step, her stomach cramped in pain.
Sigh, eating ice cream on an empty stomach—only the person suffering knows the pain.
Chi Zhihuai painfully made her way from the second floor down to the first, then knocked on the infirmary door.
“Is anyone here?”
“Come in.”
Chi Zhihuai pushed the door open and obediently sat down on the chair opposite the school doctor.
The school doctor saw her pale face and noticed she was clutching her stomach. He asked, “Did you eat something bad?”
Chi Zhihuai shook her head and honestly confessed the sequence of events that led to her current suffering.
Learning that she had eaten ice cream on an empty stomach and suffered exposure to the scorching sun, the school doctor lectured her while giving her medicine, then heated a bottle of mixed-grain porridge for her.
Chi Zhihuai ate two spoonfuls of the hot porridge, but her stomach still hurt.
The school doctor told her to stay on the bed to rest. Chi Zhihuai curled up on the bed. For a moment, she felt a long-lost joy of skipping class, but the next moment, she worried about missing the next math class.
Ugh, she really didn’t want to fall behind in math again.
Even with the memory boost, learning math by herself was just too difficult.
