After Transmigrating, I Gained a Wife - Chapter 5
Once the food was served and everyone was seated, Father Luo began to question Luo Yan. “Did that money really come from painting?”
“Yes,” Luo Yan replied. She was in the middle of eating when her father suddenly brought it up.
Seeing how certain her answer was, he wondered: Did she teach herself in secret all this time?
Luo Yan added, “Father, let’s talk more after we finish eating.”
Father Luo didn’t say anything further.
Luo Yan watched her wife eat earnestly; her chopsticks never seemed to stop. It appeared she really liked the food. Her parents were the same—her father, in particular, seemed to really enjoy the cold radish side dish.
“You went to the market and still remembered to buy me wine,” Father Luo said, his heart swelling with pride. “I didn’t dote on you for nothing.” Having such a good, filial daughter made him feel wonderful.
“Our child has always been filial!” Mother Luo chimed in, touched that Luo Yan remembered to buy her treats as well.
Luo Yan suddenly remembered the hairpin she bought for her mother and hurriedly felt around her person. Finally, she pulled it out from her left sleeve. “Mother, I bought this hairpin for you. I thought the style suited you perfectly.”
Mother Luo set down her chopsticks and took it, her heart filled with surprise and joy. Upon opening the package and seeing it was made of sandalwood, she found the design beautiful and loved it instantly.
Luo Yan smiled. “Once I earn more money, I’ll buy even better ones for you and Hanxue.”
She spoke casually, but the person sitting beside her took those words to heart.
Father Luo advised, “Take making money slowly; don’t rush. Our days will only get better and better.”
“Father is right,” Luo Yan agreed.
After dinner, Luo Yan sent her wife back to the room to rest. Once she finished cleaning the dishes, she went to talk to her father.
“Yan’er,” Father Luo started, “the food today was truly excellent. When did you secretly practice your cooking?”
Luo Yan replied, “When I was out working, I learned a bit from the cook at that family’s house.”
“I see. And Yan’er… when did you learn to paint?”
Being asked this, Luo Yan’s heart pounded with panic. “I never practiced on paper before. When I felt like drawing, I’d just use a wooden stick on the ground. I didn’t expect my drawings to actually turn out well.”
“Well, that’s quite good then.” Father Luo felt pained for his daughter; he felt he needed to have a proper talk with her soon…
He continued, “I saw you bought brushes and ink. Practice often. And don’t stop your reading and studies either!” Sooner or later, you’ll have to use that knowledge; you can hide for a while, but not forever!
“I know, Father. I actually have one more matter I’d like to ask your advice on.” Her life with Hanxue would be long, and everything needed to be planned in advance.
“What is it?”
Luo Yan sighed. “Because of this illness, Xiao Xue only just found out I’m a woman. She had a long cry about it last night.”
“She only just found out?” He had assumed the girl would have realized on their wedding night. He hadn’t expected it would take his daughter falling ill for the truth to come out.
“Yes, Father. I heard someone mention a couple of days ago that women and women can also live as a married couple. Yesterday, Hanxue was so heartbroken that I explained it all to her. Today, I feel like she actually listened to what I said! But… I don’t know how to go about it. So, I came to ask you.”
Father Luo listened, thinking it was utterly absurd! But his daughter had already married Hanxue into the family. Ultimately, it was his fault.
“Daughter, do you like the girl Hanxue?”
“I do! Hanxue is wonderful. Even after knowing I’m a woman, she didn’t throw a tantrum or run back to her family. She kept her grievances to herself and behaved perfectly in front of you and Mother. I heard that women and women can be together; I want to treat her right, and I truly like her!”
Father Luo sighed. “If you’ve decided and want to treat her well for the rest of your life… well, I can’t exactly explain ‘marital matters’ to you. Tomorrow, go to the market again and buy an ‘illustrated book.’ Look at it yourself!”
“I understand!” Luo Yan replied. Hahaha, such things really couldn’t be said aloud, but she had laid her cards on the table so her father understood her intentions.
Father Luo thought for a moment and added, “From now on, in your actions, be more like a man—be responsible!”
“I understand, Father!”
“Good. That’s all for now. Go back and get some rest.”
“Alright, Father. You should rest early too. I’m heading back.”
Luo Yan returned to the room, opening the door very quietly. She thought that if her wife had already fallen asleep, she didn’t want to disturb her.
“You’re not asleep yet?” Luo Yan saw her “silly” wife sitting on the bed, staring dazed at the hairpin she had bought her.
“Mhm, I’m not sleepy yet.”
Luo Yan said, “Wait for me a moment, I’m going to wash up.”
“Okay.”
Earlier that afternoon, Luo Yan had been looking at her fingers while chatting with her mother and had taken the time to trim her nails…
She washed up quickly and climbed into bed as if someone were chasing her.
“Do you like the hairpin that much?”
“Mhm, I like it very much.” It was the first thing Luo Yan had ever bought for her; she felt happy. However, having Luo Yan near her now made her very nervous. The way this person had acted earlier this evening… it was truly…
Luo Yan asked, “Shall I put out the lamp?”
“Could we leave one lamp lit?” Li Hanxue asked. It was too dark, and she felt uneasy. She hadn’t dared to say it the past few days.
“Of course we can. Madam, you don’t need to be so cautious around me. You must know that you and I are equals, forever.” Her wife’s voice was so soft, as if she were afraid to speak up.
“Equals?” Hanxue was confused. It had always been the rule that a wife obeys her husband to earn his affection…
Luo Yan continued, “Yes, Madam. Between husband and wife, there is equality. In the future, if I do something wrong, tell me directly. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, tell me. Our family is poor right now; you don’t say it aloud, but I know it in my heart.”
“Mhm. At first, I couldn’t accept it in my heart. But we are already married, so we can only… go on like this.” Hanxue didn’t dare say more, fearing Luo Yan might get angry.
Hearing her wife’s voice get lower and lower, Luo Yan felt pained. But she wasn’t the “original” Luo Yan; she would definitely make sure Hanxue and her parents lived a better life. On this point, Luo Yan would never compromise!
“Do you hate me?” Luo Yan had kissed her tonight, and although her wife had been moved, she still wanted to confirm.
“No, I don’t hate you. It’s just… it’s just…”
“It’s just what?” Luo Yan’s heart did somersaults at the hesitation.
“It’s a bit awkward.” She didn’t know how to interact with Luo Yan; both of them being women made her head spin.
Hahaha, my wife is too cute! Truly too cute! If it were someone else, they probably would have run back to their parents to complain, or even reported it to the local yamen!
Luo Yan was overjoyed and pulled her wife into her arms. “As long as you don’t hate me. I was really afraid you did.”
“I don’t,” Hanxue replied, feeling a sense of peace in her embrace.
Luo Yan whispered into her ear, “And the fact that I said women and women can do marital things… you don’t hate that either?” She hadn’t expected her wife to be so accepting!
“Didn’t you say women and women can? It’s just… just that we can’t have children? Were you lying to me?” She still couldn’t wrap her head around how women and women could…
Hahaha, wow. Her wife still hadn’t figured out the mechanics of the relationship. “Madam, I didn’t lie to you. Haven’t you heard that relationships between women are looked down upon by the world?”
“Mhm, I’ve heard of it before. If discovered, one would be reviled by everyone.”
Luo Yan asked, “Are you still willing, even then?”
“Luo Yan, we are already married. I… I don’t hate you.”
“I know.”
Li Hanxue continued, “I want us to live well from now on. I know your family deceived me to marry me into the house. Mother told me she was sick, and Father had no choice but to agree to the marriage.”
“Mother told you?” Luo Yan was surprised. If her wife hadn’t said anything, she wouldn’t have known.
“Mhm, Mother told me. After you fell ill, she found out you were a girl. I… what I’m thinking now is that we should still try to live a good life together.” This was the conclusion she had reached after thinking about everything Luo Yan had told her. If Luo Yan were a man, it wouldn’t really be any different. It was okay if they didn’t have their own children.
“Thank you, Hanxue,” Luo Yan said, and she kissed Hanxue’s forehead.
Li Hanxue felt shy and buried herself deeper into Luo Yan’s chest. Luo Yan tightened her embrace. “Hanxue,” she called her name.
Li Hanxue looked up and blinked at her.
My wife is so good! “Hanxue, I will love you well, cherish you, and never let you suffer.”
“Mhm.” Hanxue felt happy. Luo Yan had never been bad to her. Every day, this person woke up early to go work and earn money. Seeing that had actually made her heart ache for her.
Luo Yan’s heart raced. Hearing her wife’s response, she lost control for a moment, leaned in, and kissed her wife’s lips.
Li Hanxue was a bit startled and tried to shrink back, but she didn’t succeed. Luo Yan’s arms had already encircled her. Unable to move, she could only passively endure Luo Yan’s kiss.
Luo Yan wasn’t aggressive; the kiss was gentle. It was precisely this gentleness that made Li Hanxue feel like she was floating; her hands tightened on Luo Yan’s clothes.
Luo Yan reached out to hold her hand, slowly interlacing their fingers. “Relax a bit,” she whispered against her lips.
Li Hanxue’s face turned crimson, and she didn’t reply. But it didn’t matter, as the other person had already begun kissing her again…
After an unknown amount of time, Li Hanxue’s mind was wandering in the clouds. She didn’t even notice Luo Yan’s restless hands unfastening her clothes until she felt a hand on her slender waist. She finally snapped to. “What… what are you doing?”
Her wife spoke so softly it was barely a whisper. Looking at her, Luo Yan thought she looked absolutely enchanting. She leaned in and whispered something her wife liked. Hanxue was embarrassed beyond belief and buried her head in Luo Yan’s chest. “Luo Yan~”
“Mhm, I’m here.”
Li Hanxue whispered, “I’m not prepared yet… I’m a bit scared.” She had heard from her sisters that the first time between a couple was very painful, and she was very afraid of pain.
“Don’t be scared. Let’s go to sleep.” Luo Yan realized she was being a bit sudden and had probably frightened Hanxue. She decided to let her wife get a good night’s sleep tonight.
“I’m just a little scared, it’s not that I don’t…” Before Li Hanxue could finish, Luo Yan cut in: “I know. I’m not angry. Rest well.”
