After Transmigrating into a Book, I Ended Up with My Dream Omega - Chapter 16
The people remaining at the shelter certainly felt the air suddenly turn heavy and muggy.
Even though the sea was still calm for the moment, Xia Xiangzhen had warned them earlier that a major storm was coming tonight. Consequently, no one remained in their previously relaxed state. Everyone sped up their work, hoping to have everything prepared before the tempest hit.
Xia Xiangzhen and Yin Xiaowei had already returned, carrying the full pot of water.
“How’s it going?”
With the situation becoming urgent, Wei Lan began explaining the status at high speed.
“Three beds are assembled. The timber with the slots is all ready; once it starts raining, we can just snap them together inside the shelter. But if it’s truly a major storm tonight, I don’t think the banana and palm leaves will hold. And even if they do, if there’s heavy wind, our shelter has no walls. The wind will drive the rain right inside. The weaker members of our team probably won’t be able to stand it.”
As she spoke, sparse raindrops began to fall from the sky.
A drop landed directly on Xia Xiangzhen’s face. She instinctively wiped it away, realizing that the storm was truly here. She was about to call everyone into the shelter, but she changed her mind at the last second.
“Wei Lan and I will drag in the last of the timber. The rest of you, gather as many dry branches as possible for the fire!”
She finally remembered that they were in a survival situation, not safely at home. Now that the rain had started, their final preparation time was running out. The six of them scrambled to get the last of the wood inside. Finally, Xia Xiangzhen dug up some dirt to ring the fire pit, preventing the flames from spreading to the structure.
The wind intensified. The sea went from calm to a raging gale in an instant. Sitting in the shelter and feeling the powerful, cold wind blowing through, Yin Xiaowei said worriedly, “I don’t know if our shelter can hold up.”
Xia Xiangzhen shared the concern and asked Yin Xiaowei, “Are there any vine ropes left? Let’s reinforce it.”
“There are some.”
The shelter wasn’t built very large. Now that the timber and dry branches had been moved inside, the space was even tighter. Combined with the hurried move, the ground was cluttered with a disorganized mess of supplies. Yin Xiaowei rummaged through the chaos for a while before finding the pre-woven vine ropes.
Xia Xiangzhen took the ropes and spoke rapidly, “You stay here and keep working on the beds. Wei Lan and I have better constitutions; we’ll go out and reinforce it.”
“I’m coming too.” Yu Yayue, believing her own constitution was excellent, stood up immediately to help.
With no time to argue, the three of them faced the wind and rain to reinforce the roof of the shelter. As they worked, lightning and thunder began to crash incessantly. Following the thunder, the rain suddenly turned into a deluge. The sparse drops became a dense wall of water pouring from the sky. Simultaneously, the howling wind shrieked as it swept toward them.
“Stop reinforcing it! Come back inside!” Yin Xiaowei shouted.
“Go back and keep working on the beds, don’t worry about us!”
The moment Xia Xiangzhen opened her mouth, she was pelted with rain. She didn’t waste a drop, swallowing it for hydration before turning back to work. The three of them finally finished securing the roof and supports before retreating into the shelter.
Inside, the others had cleared the floor and placed the pot over the fire.
“Hurry, get close to the fire and dry off. Drink some hot water to warm up.”
“It’s fine.”
Xia Xiangzhen took off her plain glasses and removed her “leaking” windbreaker to “drain” it. The rain was getting heavier, as if a hole had opened in the sky, dumping massive amounts of water amidst the gale. Even though the trees around the shelter blocked some of the wind and rain, the droplets hitting the leaves on the roof created a constant, deafening clatter. The howling wind felt like it wanted to rip the shelter away.
Most deadly was the biting wind carrying moisture into the open structure. They had nowhere to hide and had to use their own bodies to block the wind to keep the fire from going out. Being novices, despite all the videos and books, they had made a fatal oversight: knowing the storm was coming, they had forgotten to build walls to block the wind.
“We won’t be able to sleep anyway, so let’s start on the walls,” Xia Xiangzhen said, putting her drained jacket back on. “Once they’re done, they’ll at least block some of it.”
“Except for the four support legs, we can use the bed frames. We’ll slot the boards closer together and reinforce them with rope.” Wei Lan began dismantling the newly made bed frames, using her axe to carve more slots.
Yin Xiaowei was shivering from the cold, but now was not the time to complain. She checked their rope supply. “The vine ropes are mostly gone from your reinforcement earlier. There are only two left.”
“Doesn’t matter, let’s just start. Whatever we make will block a little, and moving around will keep us warmer.” Xia Xiangzhen helped split more boards to fit the slots.
They were running low on timber now and had to process it more precisely.
【The power of nature is not something human strength can fight against.】
【Tonight is going to be brutal for them. Life is unpredictable; they were just talking about how well things were going, and then the storm hits. And they’re in an unfinished house.】
【If this keeps up, the Alphas might be okay, but the weaker Betas and Omegas will likely get sick. (Worried)】
【I’m scared just watching through the screen. Just now the camera spun and went black—I thought something happened! Glad it reconnected and everyone is safe.】
【You must have been in an individual stream. That was a drone being knocked out of the sky by the wind; I saw another camera catch the wreckage.】
Through the howling storm, they used the bed materials to build walls, feeling time crawl by one agonizing drop at a time. At first, they chatted while working to make time pass. But later, everyone was too cold, exhausted, and soaked to speak. They simply put their heads down and worked.
Eventually, they even ran out of tasks to do. With nothing left to build, they huddled around the fire, staring into the flames in a daze. Who knows how many people there regretted accepting this variety show?
The hours until dawn felt like centuries. Finally, the sun came up. The rain was still falling, but it was much lighter, and the wind had died down. Everyone let out a sigh of relief, a faint smile appearing on their faces. They knew the hardest part was over.
After a night of struggle, they had managed to block three sides of the shelter. The fourth side remained open only because they had run out of materials. Even with the flimsy wooden walls, the night had taken its toll. All six of them were pale, their lips bloodless, and their eyes dark from lack of sleep.
“I’ll go get something to eat.”
Xia Xiangzhen felt exhausted, but if she didn’t move, who would? Luckily, the pot had been left outside and was now full of rainwater, so they didn’t need to fetch any more.
She forced herself to stand up. “Eat something to warm up, then everyone try to get some sleep. I wanted to make beds for everyone, but it looks like that’s out for now. We’ll handle it after we wake up.”
“I’ll help you lift the pot,” Wei Lan said, also forcing herself to her feet.
【They actually made it through. But they look terrible. I hope no one has to leave the show today.】
【Xia Xiangzhen’s intent to feed everyone is great, but look at your Omegas! They’re sick! Stop talking and look at them!】
【You have a one-way crush on Yin Xiaowei but you aren’t even paying attention to her? One star review!】
【Where’s the production crew? Where did they go at a time like this?】
Before leaving, Xia Xiangzhen said, “Sister Xiaowei, Zixi, you two rest a bit more. Wei Lan and I will handle breakfast.”
The shelter was silent.
Anxious at the lack of response, Xia Xiangzhen leaned in for a closer look. In the darkness, she couldn’t see clearly, but now in the light, the state of the others shocked those who were still standing.
Not just Yin Xiaowei, but He Zixi and Chen Shengze were in bad shape. They were curled into balls, their bodies shivering uncontrollably. On Yin Xiaowei’s face, there was an ominous flush.
“Xiaowei?!”
Xia Xiangzhen’s own hands were ice cold after such a night. She warmed them by the fire for a long moment before daring to touch Yin Xiaowei’s forehead.
“She’s burning up.” Xia Xiangzhen’s face was full of panic.
An entire night without sleep, pelted by cold wind and rain—even strong Alphas would suffer, let alone Omegas with weaker constitutions.
“Where is the crew? Where is the team doctor?”
Xia Xiangzhen rushed outside the shelter, looking for the staff. But no one was there—only the wreckage and debris left by the storm.
