After Transmigrating into a Book, I Turned the Straight Bigshot Gay (BL) - Chapter 6
In the original novel, the character “Xie Yunshen” was barely described. He was mentioned only a few times to serve as a foil to the protagonist’s skills; calling him “cannon fodder” would be an understatement.
As for his personality, his build, his family background, or even how many moles he had on his body—the book made no mention of them. If he didn’t share the same name, surname, and profession, Xie Yunshen probably wouldn’t have remembered him at all.
Having transmigrated without any of the original owner’s memories, Xie Yunshen naturally had no idea the original man couldn’t swim. But based on Yan Shiqi’s words just now, he seemed to know the original Xie Yunshen extremely well.
Xie Yunshen had grown up under the protection of the Yan family. Yan Shiqi was three years older than him, so it was no wonder his recent “abnormal” behavior had sparked suspicion.
But then again, the man was in so much pain that his face was white—how did he still have the energy to interrogate him at a time like this?
Yan Shiqi pointed in a direction. “Get me the medicine from the cabinet.”
Despite the pain, his voice remained steady and composed, showing no sign of weakness. Xie Yunshen checked the label—it was a painkiller—and poured him a glass of water. After taking the pills, Yan Shiqi even used a napkin on the desk to wipe the corners of his mouth.
However, the agony didn’t fade. The shadow between his brows remained heavy; it seemed he was all too used to this ordeal.
“Should I ask Uncle Zhao to call a doctor?” Xie Yunshen asked.
Yan Shiqi suddenly grabbed his arm. The deterrent power in his gaze seemed to seize Xie’s very soul. “You fell into the water as a child. You have always been terrified of it.”
“…Didn’t I lose my memory after that concussion?”
Xie Yunshen had to admit, he was startled by the intensity in those eyes.
“But that is a deep pool.”
Xie Yunshen understood his meaning. Even someone who can swim feels a twinge of fear looking at a deep, dark pool, let alone someone with a phobia. Even with a concussion, primal instincts and fears don’t usually change.
“Do you have nothing to say to me?”
Xie Yunshen looked at him and asked, “Are you still in pain?”
Yan Shiqi froze. The grip on Xie’s arm loosened slightly before he slowly let go.
“You may leave.” His face returned to its usual, flawless mask of fortitude. He was a completely different person from the one who had just been pinning his arm and questioning him.
Xie Yunshen walked out of the study. As he left, the lights inside clicked off again.
He glanced back at the pitch-black room. Does he really like being alone in the dark? Still… that’s pretty cool.
“Little Xie! Exercising again?”
The butler stood in the garden, waving to him from a distance. Xie Yunshen was dressed in a white tracksuit; he had been training since 5:00 AM and was lightly coated in sweat.
“What is it, Uncle Zhao?”
The butler was a cousin of the Yan family named Zhao. In the novel, he was fiercely loyal to the family, and Xie Yunshen respected him.
“I have an urgent matter. Mr. Yan is attending Old Mr. Bai’s funeral today.”
“Oh.” Xie Yunshen pretended to frown, acting as if this were a grave matter. In reality, he had no idea why this was significant.
Uncle Zhao’s expression was solemn. “Funerals are chaotic, and there are many prying eyes. You must protect Mr. Yan well.”
“Me? Isn’t Fifth Bro (Yi Wuyi) going?”
“Wuyi… well, he’s powerful, as you know, but protecting people isn’t exactly his specialty.”
Xie Yunshen understood. Old Five’s specialty was killing people, not being a shield.
Uncle Zhao leaned in mysteriously. “Stop acting. I know you’re very capable now. I can only rest easy if you’re there.” He patted Xie’s chest, nodding in approval at how much more solid he felt.
Xie Yunshen knew about the Bai family funeral; it was a major plot point in the novel. However, its purpose was mainly to let the Male Lead show off and develop his romance with the female lead. He didn’t recall it having much to do with the Yan family.
The Bai family was one of the Five Great Families. Their patriarch had recently passed away from illness, so all the major families were expected to attend. In the original plot, Mr. Yan hadn’t attended because he was recovering from his injuries. Now that the timeline had changed, he didn’t know how things would play out.
He remembered that the Bai family was the one most eager to arrange a marriage with Yan Shiqi, and the novel mentioned that Yan Shiqi had once harbored a slight favorable impression of the heroine.
Given the Male Lead’s tendency to “slap faces” and his “protagonist halo” that ignored all rules… once Yan Shiqi became a perceived love rival, the consequences would be unthinkable.
I need to stay alert. I cannot let Yan Shiqi have any contact with the female lead.
After showering, he didn’t even stop to eat. He pocketed a bag of beef jerky and headed to the dining room to find Yan Shiqi.
The bodyguard shift change usually happened during breakfast. Yi Wuyi was always there before him. Xie Yunshen suspected the man had no private life at all.
“Fifth Bro, are you a 24/7 shadow?” Xie Yunshen whispered, leaning toward Yi Wuyi.
Yi Wuyi spared him a glance. “Effectively, I do everything.”
Xie Yunshen glanced at the scar on the back of his hand—the burn from Yan Shizhou’s cigarette yesterday. He understood instantly. A straightforward, loyal person like Yi Wuyi would handle any “dirty work” without complaint.
Perhaps because of the funeral, Yan Shiqi’s breakfast was even simpler than usual: just fruit and a light vegetable congee. At 8:30 AM, they prepared to depart for the Bai residence.
Today’s car was a black Lincoln. As Yan Shiqi stepped in, Xie Yunshen reflexively raised his hand to guard the roof, preventing the Bigshot from bumping his head. The Bigshot’s movements were fluid as he entered and closed his eyes.
In the back, only the two seats opposite Yan Shiqi were empty. Yi Wuyi hesitated for a second and then decided to sit in the front passenger seat to keep the driver company. Xie Yunshen wanted to reach out and stop him, but the door closed mercilessly.
Now, in this enclosed space, it was just him and Yan Shiqi. The partition screen displayed today’s news on one side and stock indices on the other.
It was a long journey—about an hour’s drive. Xie Yunshen hadn’t eaten since his morning workout. He felt the beef jerky in his pocket, betting that there would be a high-end buffet waiting for them at the Bai house. I’ll hold out until we get there.
Gurgle—
Yan Shiqi clearly heard it, but he made no sign.
The Bai funeral was held at a villa in a neighboring city. Two hostesses pinned white flowers to their suits at the entrance.
During the wake, Xie Yunshen and Yi Wuyi stood outside the main hall. Seeing no sign of a “high-end restaurant,” Xie Yunshen pulled out the beef jerky and took a bite. It was rock hard.
He didn’t forget to offer some to Yi Wuyi. “Want some?”
Yi Wuyi whispered, “But… this is a funeral.”
“Don’t feel guilty. The old man is faking it.”
Yi Wuyi looked at him in shock before taking a piece of jerky.
Inside the hall, the new head of the Bai family and two elders stepped forward to shake hands with Yan Shiqi. The elders looked as if they were dying of grief, their faces twisted in over-the-top agony. Xie Yunshen thought the acting was a bit too flamboyant.
Yan Shiqi kept his gaze low, offering his condolences.
Behind the Bai family stood a woman in elegant blue. Xie Yunshen immediately felt a sense of crisis. With this kind of “unique lighting” and “cinematic presence,” she was undoubtedly the novel’s heroine, the daughter of the Bai family.
The Male Lead was probably hiding somewhere right now, staring at her…
One of the Bai elders said, “Mr. Yan, let me introduce my grand-niece to you.” He turned to the woman. “Jingyan, this is the Chairman of the Yan Group, Mr. Yan.”
Xie Yunshen watched as Yan Shiqi’s gaze moved politely toward the Bai family—he was just about to look at the heroine!
