After Transmigrating Into A Cannon Fodder Character, I Only Want To Survive - Chapter 53
Wu Mei asked Ji Yuning to go upstairs and call the two of them for dinner. When Ji Yuning reached the door, she heard them discussing blind dates.
Hearing Liao Li say she was going to introduce Fang Bai to someone, and even several people, Ji Yuning instinctively knocked on the door, interrupting them.
Fang Bai’s words, which were about to be spoken, became a reply to Ji Yuning, “Okay, we know.”
Liao Li stood up from the sofa, propping herself up with her hand, and secretly gestured to Fang Bai, reminding her about the gift.
Fang Bai nodded to indicate she understood.
Little did they know that their interaction was clearly seen by the person at the door. Their secretive yet tacit understanding looked like a silent continuation of the previous topic, and Fang Bai’s nod, in Ji Yuning’s eyes, was an agreement to Liao Li’s suggestion.
Ji Yuning: “…”
During dinner, Liao Li and Fang Bai talked, occasionally asking Ji Yuning a few questions.
The meal ended quickly. Liao Li didn’t stay long and left after eating.
Although Liao Li’s occasional remarks were quite sharp, Fang Bai had to admit that she felt very relaxed when she was with Liao Li. Occasionally exchanging witty retorts felt like being with a friend.
Fang Bai had originally planned to treat Liao Li again before she went abroad, but the message she sent on the first day only received a reply from Liao Li the next day, saying she was already overseas and would meet up next time she returned.
She was indeed a woman of action.
Replying “Okay” to Liao Li, Fang Bai threw her phone onto the bed and used a towel to dry her hair.
She had just taken a shower, and her hair was still wet.
After roughly drying it, Fang Bai sat down at the dressing table to blow-dry her hair when two knocks came from the door.
“Come in.”
Fang Bai thought it was Wu Mei looking for her, so even when the person outside pushed open the door and the footsteps got closer, Fang Bai didn’t turn her head to look. She just kept doing her hair, waiting for Wu Mei to speak first.
But when Fang Bai sensed the person approaching her side and standing there without speaking, she realized that it might not be Wu Mei who had come in.
Turning her head, she saw Ji Yuning standing to the side with a pen and a folded piece of paper in her hand, looking silent, as if she was waiting for Fang Bai to finish her hair before stating her purpose.
Fang Bai glanced at the paper in Ji Yuning’s hand and asked with a doubtful whisper, “Is there a question you don’t know how to do?”
High school questions, she might have forgotten some, but she could still figure them out.
Just as Fang Bai was about to ask what subject it was, Ji Yuning placed the paper on the table and said softly, “Needs your signature.”
Fang Bai looked down. It was a school form related to student safety to and from school. The parent and student signature section was at the bottom.
“…”
So, how could a top student have questions they couldn’t solve?
She had already signed Ji Yuning’s name, the handwriting neat but not lacking in elegance.
Fang Bai picked up the pen. “Can’t the student just sign this themselves?”
Yes.
Usually, Ji Yuning signed it herself.
The reason she brought it to Fang Bai this time…
Seeing Fang Bai about to finish writing her name, emotions surged in Ji Yuning’s eyes, her breathing steady. “You’re going on a blind date?”
The last word was just finished.
Fang Bai capped the pen and handed it to Ji Yuning along with the paper. “You heard?”
“Mmm.”
“Liao Li was just joking,” Fang Bai crossed her legs, her nightgown sliding down, revealing a hint of the scenery beneath. “I haven’t thought about it yet.”
Not yet.
But later she would.
Even Ji Yuning herself didn’t realize that she was picking at the words, being so meticulous about something.
Fang Bai thought Ji Yuning would leave after signing, planning to blow-dry her hair after Ji Yuning left. But after waiting for a while, the other person stood there without moving, showing no intention of leaving.
“?” Fang Bai tilted her head to look at Ji Yuning.
Perhaps the question in Fang Bai’s eyes was too obvious. After looking at Fang Bai for a few seconds, Ji Yuning’s pink lips moved slightly. “What kind of person do you like?”
Fang Bai was taken aback and asked, “Did Liao Li ask you to ask that?”
Ji Yuning paused noticeably. “…Mmm.”
Fang Bai understood. This question was clearly not something Ji Yuning would ask. After all, why would Ji Yuning care about the type of person she liked?
Fang Bai thought Liao Li was just talking, but she didn’t expect her to actually ask Ji Yuning to ask her.
One Ji Yuning was enough to keep her busy. Where would she find the time to date?
After considering it, Fang Bai put down her crossed legs and shifted her butt, sitting facing Ji Yuning.
From Ji Yuning’s perspective, looking down, if Fang Bai leaned forward slightly, the secret realm hidden beneath her nightgown would be fully revealed.
Ji Yuning’s brow furrowed slightly. She saw the water droplets hanging from the ends of Fang Bai’s hair, dripping onto Fang Bai’s silk nightgown and spreading into large dark patches.
Ji Yuning said coldly, “Where’s the hairdryer?”
The sudden question surprised Fang Bai. After a moment, she said, “In the drawer. Do you need it?”
As she asked, Fang Bai leaned forward and pulled open the drawer, taking out the hairdryer and holding it up in the direction where Ji Yuning was standing. “Is the one in your room broken?”
The item she held out remained untouched for a long time. Fang Bai closed the drawer and looked up, only to find Ji Yuning looking to the side.
What was she looking at?
Fang Bai followed her gaze, but saw nothing. By the time Fang Bai looked back, she found Ji Yuning still looking there.
Fang Bai said softly, “Xiao Ning?”
Ji Yuning saw out of the corner of her eye that Fang Bai had sat up straight. Ignoring her burning ears, she turned her head. “Mmm.”
“Here.” Fang Bai handed the hairdryer to Ji Yuning again.
“I don’t need it,” Ji Yuning’s fingers twitched, but in the end, she didn’t point to Fang Bai’s chest, just said faintly, “Your clothes are wet.”
Fang Bai lowered her eyes, and the few dark patches on her clothes came into view.
Luckily, she hadn’t planned to sleep in this. She had just put it on for convenience after showering.
Putting the hairdryer on the table, Fang Bai picked up the towel and slowly wrapped it around the ends of her hair. “It’s okay, I’ll blow-dry it after I finish talking to you.”
As soon as she finished speaking, an arm appeared in Fang Bai’s peripheral vision, picking up the hairdryer from the table.
Fang Bai looked up and saw Ji Yuning plugging it in and holding it up to her.
After a pause, Fang Bai took it.
Seven minutes later, Fang Bai’s hair was dry, and the damp patches on her clothes had disappeared.
As soon as Fang Bai put down the hairdryer, Ji Yuning spoke, “Auntie can continue.”
“…”
Liao Li really found the right person, so dedicated.
Fang Bai cleared her throat and said slowly, “I don’t have any requirements for my other half.”
Ji Yuning’s eyelids fluttered. Before she could react, Fang Bai began counting on her fingers:
“But they have to be taller than me, have a good figure, be good-looking – the kind of good-looking where seeing their face makes you forget your anger. They can’t smoke, drink excessively, or go clubbing. Their education level also has to be higher than mine. Not only must they be richer than me, but they also have to be willing to spend money on me. They have to have a good personality and be tolerant of me. Ideally, they can accompany me on a trip around the world. Most importantly, their parents must be open-minded and not mind—”
Fang Bai paused, released her bent fingers, and said in a lazy tone, “Just tell Liao Li that.”
The kind of person she described seemed common, but upon closer inspection, there wouldn’t be many to choose from. Fang Bai didn’t believe that Liao Li would still insist on introducing her, let alone be able to find someone like that. And there was one more thing she hadn’t said.
Ji Yuning’s hand gripping the paper stiffened, her face remaining calm and indifferent. Finally, she gave a low “Mmm.”
Fang Bai smiled faintly, tilting her head slightly. “Did you remember all of that?”
Ji Yuning didn’t say anything.
The phone on the bed rang. Fang Bai got up from the chair and walked towards the bed.
Ji Yuning watched Fang Bai’s back, her eyes filled with unreadable emotions, but the corner of the paper crumpled in her hand betrayed her thoughts.
She could achieve all of those things, it was just a matter of time, but there was one thing she couldn’t achieve, never could.
The blind date that Liao Li wanted to introduce was male.
Fang Bai looked at her phone, took a shirt from the sofa and put it on, then walked up to Ji Yuning and asked, “Are you hungry?”
Ji Yuning composed herself, her eyelids flickering as she looked at Fang Bai.
“I’m a little hungry,” Fang Bai said with a smile, walking past Ji Yuning. “Come downstairs with me and let’s cook a late-night snack.”
Ji Yuning sat on the dining chair, the paper and pen placed beside her hand.
She quietly looked towards the kitchen, at the figure standing in front of the counter wearing an apron, beneath which was a silk nightgown.
A strange outfit, yet it was impossible to look away.
The nightgown, which was already quite loose around the waist, was cinched in by the apron, turning the hem that barely covered her thighs into a form-fitting skirt. The tied bow hung at her tailbone, swaying slightly with Fang Bai’s every movement.
Ji Yuning quickly lowered her eyes. She remembered upstairs, although she had quickly turned her head away, she had still accidentally seen the scene because she hadn’t been careful.
Fang Bai turned around and saw Ji Yuning’s cheeks were slightly red, but her expression was still indifferent, her lips pressed into a straight line.
The water still needed some time to boil. Fang Bai walked over to the dining table and sat down. Bored, she asked, “Is it very hot?”
The indoor temperature was indeed high, but not high enough to make someone’s face flush.
“You,” Ji Yuning asked coldly, “why don’t you change your clothes?”
Fang Bai didn’t hesitate. “Lazy.”
At 11 o’clock at night, who would change clothes just to make a late-night snack? There was no one else at home, so there was even less need.
Ji Yuning pursed her lips. “.”
She didn’t even know why she asked that question. It was just that when Fang Bai asked if it was hot, she subconsciously thought of Fang Bai standing in front of the kitchen.
Fang Bai thought Ji Yuning’s cleanliness obsession had kicked in, thinking the nightgown would get greasy fumes on it. She coughed and explained, “I’ll change into a new nightgown before going to bed.”
After saying that, Fang Bai suddenly realized, why was she explaining because Ji Yuning had a cleanliness obsession?
Fang Bai glanced at the long-sleeved clothes Ji Yuning was wearing and asked, “Why haven’t you changed into your pajamas yet? Have you been studying until now?”
Not really. For the two hours before she knocked on Fang Bai’s door, Ji Yuning had been sitting at the table holding that piece of paper, not studying anything.
But Ji Yuning wouldn’t say this, so she nodded silently.
“So tiring,” Fang Bai murmured.
“Has your neck and shoulders been okay with studying all this time?” Fang Bai’s gaze fixed on Ji Yuning’s shoulders. “Do you need a massage service?”
Ji Yuning’s hand on the table moved slightly. She turned her head to look at Fang Bai, her voice devoid of emotion. “You know how?”
Fang Bai shook her head. “I don’t, but I can ask a masseuse to come to the house tomorrow.”
So that’s what she meant by massage service.
Ji Yuning’s hand retreated under the table. “No need.”
Fang Bai hummed in acknowledgment and was about to get up to go back to the kitchen when she suddenly thought that Ji Yuning had asked if *she* knew how. So she looked directly at Ji Yuning and asked, “Then what if I did?”
“Also,” Ji Yuning paused, “no need.”
“…”
Then why did you ask?
Fang Bai licked her lips and stood up. “I’ll go cook.”
Two seconds later, Ji Yuning followed suit. “I’ll help—”
Before the word “you” could be spoken, Fang Bai pressed her hand on Ji Yuning’s shoulder. “You sit there and wait for me.”
Even through a layer of clothing, Ji Yuning still felt the warmth of Fang Bai’s palm.
It burned in her heart, stirring up a layer of ripples.
Ji Yuning sat on the chair, watching the busy figure in front of the kitchen counter. The other person, besides cooking, kept glancing at her phone.
Not chatting with someone, not looking at a recipe, but looking at the time.
Her heart suddenly skipped a beat.
Ji Yuning placed her phone beside the paper. The lit screen displayed the time.
[November 20th 23:59]
When the time jumped to four zeros, just as Ji Yuning had guessed, a bowl appeared in front of her on time.
A bowl of thin noodles in broth, with a drizzle of sesame oil floating on the surface. A few tiny green scallion rings floated in the clear soup, and a vaguely visible yellow fried egg lay on the side of the bowl.
Fang Bai placed the chopsticks on the bowl. The moment Ji Yuning looked up at her, she said softly, “Xiao Ning, happy birthday.”
When looking at her phone, Fang Bai saw it was 11:40. Immediately, she thought of this.
She timed it perfectly to make a bowl of noodles at 12 o’clock, on Ji Yuning’s birthday.
Fang Bai guessed she was probably the first person to make noodles for someone on their birthday.
But she wanted to do something special, something unforgettable for Ji Yuning.
Accompanying Fang Bai’s soft words, Ji Yuning’s ears were filled with the sound of her own heartbeat, one beat after another, striking against the defenses in her heart.
Returning to her room, Ji Yuning sat on the sofa for nearly half an hour, but her heartbeat still hadn’t calmed down. As long as she closed her eyes, all that appeared in her mind were the blushing images she had thought of at the dining table.
The next day, Ji Yuning forgot how she finished that late-night snack, forgot how she went upstairs with Fang Bai, forgot if Fang Bai had said goodnight to her.
She remembered in her dream, Fang Bai stood in front of her wearing that nightgown, smiling gently and calling her “Xiao Ning.”
