After Transmigrating, the Female Lead Went Dark (GL) - Chapter 6
The Demon Sect Leader was living a carefree life in prison, but the righteous sects who had captured her hadn’t slept well for two days. They were worried and had gathered at the Moshan Sect to share their anxieties.
“We’ve received news that the Qianji Sect remnants are gathering to rescue that demon. No one knows which sect they’ll strike first,” said the leader of the Changti Gang, stroking his beard with deep concern.
The Changti Gang was the closest to the Qianji Sect. If the Demon Sect sought revenge against the righteous sects, the Changti Gang would be the first to suffer. He felt that since the Moshan Sect led the attack, they should also help resolve this mess.
“Isn’t this perfect? Once they gather, we can round them up in one fell swoop again!” the Young Master of the Tianyan Sect said excitedly.
The Sect Master of the Yaoshan Sect shook his head. “The reason we were able to successfully breach the Demon Sect’s main base was because we caught them by surprise and struck first, giving them no time to react. Now that the Demon Sect members are on guard, we’ll suffer heavy casualties if we try to encircle and suppress them again.”
“We have so many masters in the righteous path. Why should we fear a bunch of scattered remnants?” The Young Master of the Tianyan Sect couldn’t understand why these middle-aged men were so timid. “We are the leaders of the righteous path. Why should we boost the Demon Sect’s morale and diminish our own ambition?”
The Sect Leader of the Tianyan Sect saw his foolish son speaking so recklessly and quickly scolded him. “Silence! This matter is not as simple as you think!”
The attack on the Demon Palace was outwardly a joint effort by the major righteous sects, but what was the reality? The Saintess and the Fifth Elder Zhuo Zidan of the Moshan Sect played the decisive roles.
None of them dared to fight the Demon Sect Leader because they knew they would certainly lose. They had to wait for the two of them to deal with the Sect Leader.
Yet, the Saintess hadn’t killed the Demon Sect Leader, but had kept her captive instead. This put them in a passive position, forcing them to reluctantly defer to the Moshan Sect’s decisions.
If the Moshan Sect decided to wash its hands of the matter, they couldn’t guarantee they could eliminate the remaining Demon Sect members smoothly. If they suffered heavy losses, the foundations of their sects would be shaken.
The Sect Master of the Yaoshan Sect chuckled and changed the subject. “I wonder what Master Ling thinks about this?”
The woman in the Taoist robe sitting in the head seat, with her eyes covered by a white veil, said calmly, “No need to rush.”
A short while later, Xiao Xinyue and Zhuo Zidan arrived. Zhuo Zidan sat down immediately, while Xiao Xinyue first performed the greeting rituals to Master Ling and the leaders of the various sects before gracefully taking her seat.
The Moshan Sect Leader, Ling Guqing, judged her position by the sound, turned her head to “look” at her favored disciple, informed her about the gathering of the Qianji Sect remnants, and then, as if testing her, asked, “Xinyue, how do you think we should respond?”
Xiao Xinyue smiled faintly. “The Demon Sect suffered a great loss of vitality this time, and many of their people are in our hands. They are unlikely to act rashly or dare to move anytime soon, so there is no need to worry for the time being.”
Her voice was soft and gentle, giving everyone a sense of calm. The worries of the crowd subsided without them even noticing.
Ling Guqing asked again, “How is the Demon Sect Leader doing in prison?”
Xiao Xinyue lowered her gaze. “No unusual activity.”
Ling Guqing’s fingers tapped the tabletop rhythmically.
Zhuo Zidan added, “With the Saintess watching her, she can’t escape. It’s just that she’s still adjusting to being a prisoner after being the high and mighty Demon Sect Leader. She’s been restless and noisy! But she will probably accept her fate after a while.”
Upon hearing this, everyone was very satisfied with the Moshan Sect’s approach.
Why should a Demon Sect leader receive courtesy from the righteous path? She should be locked in a dark dungeon, eating scraps and steamed buns, drinking cold water, and beaten once a day, so she would be as miserable as they had been recently!
Xiao Xinyue watched her master’s gesture and, under the scrutiny of the crowd, proposed, “I suggest we move her to a different place of confinement.”
“Saintess, please speak your mind.”
“We are renowned righteous sects. Our actions must be open and aboveboard, and we should treat others with tolerance and measure. Precisely because the opponent is the Demon Sect Leader, we should give her courtesy.”
The crowd was astonished and clearly disagreed with her.
Xiao Xinyue continued unhurriedly, “When Cao Wei conquered Shu, the Wei Emperor treated the later ruler, Liu Shan, with courtesy and conferred upon him the title of Duke of Anle. After that, the Shu army scattered and was no longer a threat. This is the origin of the idiom, happy as a duke in captivity, forgetting home (Le Bu Si Shu).”
“We all know the idiom, but what does it have to do with this matter?”
Zhuo Zidan sneered inwardly at the dullness of these people. Even he, an outsider who hadn’t heard the idiom, understood Xiao Xinyue’s intent. Were these people genuinely confused, or were they pretending not to understand?
He interjected, “The Saintess means that although the Demon Sect Leader is not a king, she is still the leader of a sect. She was quite trusted by her followers before, which is why these Demon Sect remnants are gathering to save her. This shows her high status in their eyes.
“Therefore, if we treat her with courtesy, her followers will have reservations when they are incited to confront us. We can then emulate the example of Cao Wei and make the Demon Sect Leader content in her captivity and forget her home. In this way, the threat of the Demon Sect will no longer be a concern.”
The crowd suddenly understood and felt that his words made a lot of sense.
They didn’t suspect the Moshan Sect of being biased, since the Demon Sect caused the Xiao family massacre. Surely, no one in the world hated the Demon Sect more than the Saintess. If she could be so benevolent toward the Demon Sect Leader, it must be for the sake of the greater good!
Praises like “enduring humiliation for the sake of the mission,” “tolerance and benevolence,” and “kindness and generosity” poured out effortlessly. For a time, the meeting hall became the “Saintess Praise Hall.”
She had been locked up, and she had suffered. It was time to give the Demon Sect Leader a little treat.
Many sects supported the Saintess’s proposal. No one cared about the attitudes of the remaining few who abstained. Ling Guqing saw that her disciple, the future leader of the Moshan Sect, was receiving so much support, so she naturally wouldn’t reject her disciple’s proposal in front of everyone.
The Demon Sect Leader was unaware of her impending release. She was eating and sleeping, living a very comfortable but also somewhat boring life.
When Chen Mixian brought her next meal, she asked, “Can the guard leader please beg your Saintess for me? Let me go out and get some fresh air. Even death row inmates get to go for a walk before they die!”
Chen Mixian said impatiently, “You want fresh air? Do you want to fly, too? You think you’re so entitled?”
“If I could fly, I would want to, but I can’t fly! Besides, what’s wrong with letting me out for some fresh air? I’m not a kite, so you don’t have to worry about the wind carrying me away.”
Chen Mixian found that he couldn’t argue with her. His mouth twisted in anger, and he said viciously, “Eat your food and stop daydreaming!”
Sometimes, he thought the Saintess had captured a fake Demon Sect Leader. He had only ever heard of the Demon Sect committing atrocious acts, and its leader was said to be unfathomably skilled and ruthless. He had never encountered such a shameless, energetic, noisy, and pretentious demon!
As he turned to leave the cell, he saw the Saintess standing silently by the door. He was startled. “S-Saintess.”
“You may go about your duties,” Xiao Xinyue said.
Chen Mixian ran off guiltily. Xiao Xinyue entered the cell and said, “Even if you were a kite, you might not be able to fly away.”
Zhou Zhuying smiled. “The string is in your hands, after all. I know.”
Xiao Xinyue was blinded by her smile and looked away. “Are you not at all worried about your situation?”
Zhou Zhuying was optimistic. “I just go with the flow!” Her eyes darted around, and she leaned in close to Xiao Xinyue. “Saintess sister, can I go out and get some fresh air?”
Xiao Xinyue glanced at her sideways. “And then try to escape like last night?”
Zhou Zhuying was called out. She chuckled sheepishly. “How could I? I wasn’t trying to escape last night. I just got lost. The clouds covered the moon, there were no lights around, and the wind was strong. I got confused for a moment and went in the wrong direction.”
“Quick-witted and silver-tongued.” Xiao Xinyue put her hands behind her back. “Let’s go.”
Zhou Zhuying was stunned. She hadn’t expected to be allowed out. She happily rushed to follow. But as soon as she was out of the cell door, she regretted it. “Maybe I should go back. It’s too cold out here.”
Xiao Xinyue stopped and turned to look at her.
Zhou Zhuying thought: Did the female lead only just notice that I’m only wearing two single layers?
The female lead doesn’t care about me! She felt deeply hurt.
Xiao Xinyue, however, said, “Has the Sect Leader played the sheep for so long that she has forgotten she is a wolf?”
“What do you mean?”
“You have profound internal energy. Why should you fear this small bit of cold wind?”
Zhou Zhuying: “…”
If I knew how to use my internal energy, I would have used it already! Why would I be miserably thinking about how to escape with a spoon?!
She couldn’t very well admit that she had completely forgotten all her martial arts skills. If she showed all her cards, she would be completely at their mercy.
Xiao Xinyue’s heart sank, but she didn’t press the matter. She simply untied the cloak from her own body and offered it to Zhou Zhuying.
Zhou Zhuying gratefully took it and wrapped it around herself. But seeing the female lead’s small frame, she felt too embarrassed to keep it all to herself, so she pulled out one side. “Should we share it?”
Xiao Xinyue’s expression softened into a faint smile, though she quickly rejected her offer. “No need.”
Zhou Zhuying didn’t insist. She followed close behind Xiao Xinyue, admiring the scenery. But there wasn’t much to see in the middle of winter. The trees were bare, and only the plum blossoms were bravely blooming in the cold.
After walking for a while, she realized the dungeon and Xiao Xinyue’s small courtyard were out of sight. “Is it alright for us to walk this far?”
Xiao Xinyue countered, “Is it bad to have you walk a few extra steps and breathe some fresh air?”
“It’s good, but isn’t there some sort of conspiracy here?”
“You don’t have to follow me.”
Zhou Zhuying was shameless. “Then I must stick close to Saintess sister! I believe Saintess sister would never harm me!”
