An Inner Life of a Cold Beauty Omega Secretary - Chapter 3
“Excuse me, President Ye, I need to take a call first.” Even as Mu Zheng said this, her eyes were fixed on Ye Baiwei.
After all, Ye Baiwei was her boss. As the boss’s secretary, since she received a proper salary, her boss’s word was truth and had to be obeyed implicitly.
Seeing that Ye Baiwei had no intention of stopping her, Mu Zheng turned and walked toward the balcony.
“Darling, why did you only just pick up my call?”
As soon as Mu Zheng pressed the answer button, a pleasant female voice came through.
In truth, Mu Zheng felt a bit guilty. She had been busy running around for Ye Baiwei all week; by the time she was free, it was usually one or two in the morning. Fang Ran would already be asleep by then, and Mu Zheng couldn’t bring herself to wake her in the middle of the night. It kept getting delayed, and she hadn’t called Fang Ran for nearly a week.
Of course, that included sending messages.
“I’m sorry, Ranran. I was busy with work and only just got a free moment. I’ll buy you a gift later to make it up to you.”
Fang Ran didn’t seem to blame Mu Zheng at all. Hearing that Mu Zheng wanted to buy her an apology gift, she said thoughtfully, “No need, darling. Your work is always so busy, I understand. I called today just to let you know that I’ll be going on a business trip for the next couple of days. Would you like to come see me today? Otherwise, I might not see you for another week.”
Mu Zheng froze. This was a bit sudden—well, not exactly sudden, but Mu Zheng had never heard Fang Ran mention being sent away by her company. This was a first, so she subconsciously asked, “So suddenly?”
If Fang Ran was going on a business trip in the next two days, she would have no time to go see her. They hadn’t seen each other in a week; if they missed this chance, it would be more than two weeks apart. For a couple, that was an incredibly long time to be separated.
Should she ask Ye Baiwei for time off?
But would a woman like Ye Baiwei ever agree to let her take leave?
Mu Zheng felt very irritable. She raised a hand to pinch her brow, a sense of anxiety rising within her.
It wasn’t that she was unwilling to give up the secretary job, but she simply couldn’t right now. Yet, if she didn’t take leave, she wouldn’t see Fang Ran for two weeks, which could easily lead to relationship problems.
And the main issue lay with her.
“Darling, you’ll definitely come to see me, right?” Fang Ran sounded aggrieved over the phone. “We haven’t seen each other for a week. You don’t pick up when I call, you don’t call me, and you don’t even send messages. I feel like we aren’t even a couple anymore—more like strangers. But even strangers can see each other often; we’re worse than strangers now. Zhengzheng, is there someone else, so you’re avoiding me on purpose?”
Mu Zheng explained, “Ranran, don’t overthink it. There’s no one else, and I’m not trying to avoid you. I’ll ask my boss for leave tomorrow and take you out to have some fun.”
Just as Mu Zheng finished speaking, a woman’s muffled groan came through the phone.
The sound was very soft—so soft one might not even hear it clearly without listening intently. Combined with the constant sound of the TV in the background, it was even harder to catch, but strangely, Mu Zheng heard it.
“Ranran, is someone with you?”
Fang Ran immediately explained, “Yes, someone is here. She’s an old friend I used to know who came over to hang out yesterday. Zhengzheng, you know the apartment you rented for me only has one bed… I couldn’t exactly make a guest sleep on the sofa, could I? I didn’t tell you in advance because she came straight over last night, and I didn’t have a chance to refuse. I’m sorry, Zhengzheng, I know you’re a neat freak, but just this once! I’ll never agree to it again!”
Mu Zheng felt uncomfortable. If it was just a friend coming over to hang out, it was fine. If they stayed over to sleep, that was also fine. The problem was that the friend clearly knew Fang Ran was in a relationship and that there was only one bed. Even if they really wanted to stay, they should have booked a hotel room for the night instead of staying at her home.
And sleeping stuck together with Fang Ran.
Even if they had no money, if they really wanted to stay the night, they could have used Fang Ran’s phone to tell her; she could afford that much.
Checking in without saying a word made Mu Zheng seriously suspect that this friend had ulterior motives toward Fang Ran!
But she had no evidence to prove it, and since Fang Ran had put it that way, if she pushed the issue further, she would seem too petty.
“It’s fine. Since she’s your friend, let it go.”
Fang Ran seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and said coaxingly, “I knew you were the best, darling! If you’re asking for leave tomorrow, when will you be back? I’ll prepare something delicious for you!”
In the past, Mu Zheng would have found this question normal. But for some reason, because of what happened today, she felt Fang Ran was testing her. Yet, logic told her she should give her partner enough trust; one must never be paranoid without evidence.
Because of this, Mu Zheng dismissed all negative thoughts and said in a gentle tone, “Probably around ten o’clock tomorrow morning. If there are any places nearby you want to visit, you can tell me today, and I’ll book the tickets in advance.”
Fang Ran hesitated for a moment before agreeing, “Okay, I’ll send the choices to you once I’ve picked.”
Mu Zheng gave an “mm” and hung up. She turned around to find Ye Baiwei looking at her, eyes unmoving, as if scrutinizing something.
However, Ye Baiwei was always like this, so Mu Zheng was long used to it.
“President Ye, I’m finished with my call. If there’s nothing else, we can depart.”
Ye Baiwei crossed her hands under her chin and looked at her, offering no reaction to the statement. Instead, she asked, “Was that your Alpha calling? Did they need something?”
“It was nothing.”
“If it was ‘nothing,’ then it was something, right?”
Mu Zheng truly couldn’t refute that, so she simply brought up the request for leave. “President Ye is right. Therefore, I would like to take a day off tomorrow.”
Leave tomorrow?
Then what was she supposed to do tomorrow?!!!
Ye Baiwei felt this was unacceptable. She had transmigrated and knew the direction of the original plot, but that didn’t mean she knew how to do everything or knew everyone. If a single link in the chain broke, she would absolutely be taken away as an impostor.
And Mu Zheng was the only person here she could trust and rely on. If Mu Zheng wasn’t around, she was very likely doomed.
“No!”
Mu Zheng’s brow furrowed instantly. She had guessed Ye Baiwei wouldn’t agree, but actually hearing the refusal still made her very angry. “President Ye, out of 365 days a year, I am working at least 360 of them. Others rest on holidays, but I am still working. I didn’t even go back to reunite with my family for the New Year. Out of 24 hours a day, I work at least 14 of them. Asking for just one day off shouldn’t be an excessive request, should it?”
Ye Baiwei was stunned, thinking to herself, Good lord, this is basically working all year round without a break!
How did this Mu Zheng endure this without resigning?
How high must the salary be to stay without quitting? Surely it wouldn’t exceed a million?
The original novel never mentioned that Mu Zheng worked year-round without rest!
But in the world of CEO novels, it seemed secretaries never rested—they had to be present in every chapter. She hadn’t paid much attention when reading, but now that she was a character in the book, it suddenly felt suffocating.
If she didn’t agree, it would be too heartless.
But if she did agree, what if something went wrong or she ran into someone she knew? What would she do then?!
Ye Baiwei found it truly difficult to choose for a moment.
Seeing her silence, Mu Zheng’s frown deepened. She slammed both hands onto the table and leaned forward, glaring at Ye Baiwei. “President Ye, I am only your secretary, not your servant. I have the right to rest and the right to take leave!”
Ye Baiwei obviously knew that, but she really couldn’t let Mu Zheng leave. She didn’t know anyone in this world; if Mu Zheng wasn’t there, she would be no different from a blind person!
“Secretary Mu, you should still remember the contract you signed with me back then, right? If you don’t remember, I can help refresh your memory.”
Ye Baiwei remembered the original story mentioning that the original Ye Baiwei had made Mu Zheng sign some kind of agreement during hiring. Although she didn’t know the contents, she spoke up to see if she could get lucky with a blind guess.
Fortunately, Ye Baiwei hit the mark.
Hearing this, Mu Zheng’s face darkened immediately. Her tone was no longer as defiant as before. After slowly withdrawing her hands, she said, “No need for a reminder, President Ye. I remember.”
“Good that you remember,” Ye Baiwei said. “However, I’m truly curious. Secretary Mu, you’ve never asked for leave before. Why the sudden request today? Was it your Alpha calling with something? Is their heat cycle coming up?”
Companies had special leave slips for such periods, but when Ye Baiwei read the original novel, the author didn’t emphasize this point. Why was it that after she transmigrated, these insignificant, fragmented details became concrete!
Wasn’t this going to be the death of her!
Mu Zheng was still fuming and didn’t really want to answer Ye Baiwei’s question. But as a professional secretary, no matter how emotional she felt, she still had to maintain the proper attitude for work.
“President Ye, this is a personal matter. I wouldn’t want to trouble you with worry.”
In this moment, Ye Baiwei suddenly understood why the original Ye Baiwei had no feelings for Mu Zheng. Because no matter what she asked, Mu Zheng had a corresponding excuse to refuse. The original Ye Baiwei liked people who were submissive; someone cold like Mu Zheng might seem novel at first, but after being rejected many times, she would grow tired of it.
Therefore, for the original Ye Baiwei, it wasn’t that she couldn’t “conquer” Mu Zheng; on the contrary, she felt that being rejected by Mu Zheng like this made her lose face, so she simply chose to hate her.
“It seems that isn’t the reason,” Ye Baiwei said. “Then why is Secretary Mu asking for leave? There must be a reason for it, right?”
Mu Zheng looked at her and chose silence again.
Of course, that was only on the surface.
Ye Baiwei felt that Mu Zheng must be roasting her relentlessly in her heart right now, but she hadn’t heard any of Mu Zheng’s mental activity. She began to doubt if she had just hallucinated earlier.
Or was it that Mu Zheng’s exhaustion from the original Ye Baiwei’s exploitation had reached a point where she was too tired to even roast her?
[This person’s heart and liver must be pitch black. I really want to dig them out and see!]
Ye Baiwei: “…”
