An Inner Life of a Cold Beauty Omega Secretary - Chapter 4
It seemed the roast was late, but it arrived nonetheless.
Ye Baiwei stared at the expressionless Mu Zheng, finding it truly difficult to connect such rich mental activity with that cold, aloof face. The disconnect was like watching a tragic Lin Daiyu spend her days in tears only to get on stage and perform stand-up comedy—it was both tragic and hilarious.
“The way you’re looking at me, Secretary Mu… do you feel there was something wrong with my question?”
A flicker of bewilderment crossed Mu Zheng’s eyes. She likely felt her poise and facial management were impeccable and couldn’t possibly be seen through so easily.
At the same time, she looked a bit puzzled. Though her eyes didn’t shift, her gaze remained fixed on Ye Baiwei’s face, as if she were determined to find some clue there.
Ye Baiwei, naturally, noticed.
To say she wasn’t panicking inside would be a lie. As a real person who had transmigrated into a novel, she knew the general plot, but everything else was a blank slate. Furthermore, the original author hadn’t bothered to detail the personalities of anyone except the protagonist Alpha; she had no idea what these people were actually like.
In the world of a “dominant CEO,” only the CEO’s personality is clearly defined. Everyone else is, frankly, an NPC—unless the author took a special liking to a supporting character and gave them a bit of backstory.
As for a secretary as clever as Mu Zheng, the author had truly brushed past her with just a few strokes. Aside from being labeled “cold and aloof,” there was hardly any plot regarding her story. Even though Ye Baiwei had spent nearly a decade in the real-world workforce, she would have certainly slipped up in front of someone like Mu Zheng if she hadn’t known the original plot beforehand.
“Does Secretary Mu have an issue with my words?” Ye Baiwei looked up and stared straight at her. “As your boss, is there a problem with me asking why you want to take leave?”
Of course, there wasn’t.
That wasn’t the point Mu Zheng was concerned about; it was that Ye Baiwei never used to ask her these things. In the past, when she asked for leave, Ye Baiwei would only be displeased. Consequently, there were usually only two outcomes: if she was in a bad mood, she’d snap at her and refuse; if she was in a good mood, she’d just toss the leave slip at her without asking a single question.
Ye Baiwei’s temper had always been volatile. Even though Mu Zheng believed no one knew Ye Baiwei better than she did, she still found this person utterly unrecognizable at times.
Now that Ye Baiwei was asking, Mu Zheng naturally didn’t think much of it.
“No problem at all. You are right, President Ye.”
[Right, my ass. If it weren’t for this salary, I’d have peeled your skull open by now!]
“…” A cold sweat broke out on Ye Baiwei’s back. Given Mu Zheng’s mental state, she wouldn’t be surprised if the woman took her out back and finished her off. “Secretary Mu, you…”
Mu Zheng asked, “Does President Ye have another question?”
Ye Baiwei thought to herself: How would I dare? Mu Zheng was already thinking about peeling her skull; if she pushed it any further, she might actually make a move. “Secretary Mu, it’s not that I can’t agree to your leave. However, I have one condition. If you agree to it, I’ll approve the request. How about it?”
[Heh, some people have black hearts, so their thoughts must be pitch black too!]
[Negotiating conditions? There’s no way this is a sincere deal!]
[I’d sooner believe a sow could climb a tree than believe Ye Baiwei!]
Pfft—
“Cough, cough, cough—”
“Is President Ye feeling unwell?”
Ye Baiwei nearly coughed up blood from those thoughts. She truly couldn’t understand how someone could be so cold on the outside while roasting her so fiercely on the inside.
“Cough, no, I’m fine.” Ye Baiwei leaned back, crossing her arms. “Have you considered my offer, Secretary Mu? If I’m not mistaken, you’re asking for leave because your Alpha called you with something… perhaps she misses you, hasn’t seen you in a long time, and is about to go on a business trip and wants to see you before she leaves. Am I right, Secretary Mu?”
Mu Zheng didn’t refute her, because Ye Baiwei was exactly right.
Her silence served as confirmation. “Since you’re quiet, it seems I’ve guessed correctly again.”
Mu Zheng suddenly felt a wave of discomfort. Previously, Ye Baiwei only made her emotionally uncomfortable with her moodiness and strange demands. But the current Ye Baiwei made her entire being feel uneasy.
Yet, Mu Zheng couldn’t describe this weird sensation.
In short, Ye Baiwei’s words made Mu Zheng feel that when she previously said she couldn’t see through her secretary, it might have all been an act.
“Since when did President Ye develop the refined taste for guessing what’s on other people’s minds?”
“…I haven’t.”
Ye Baiwei quickly changed the subject. “So, how about it? What do you think, Secretary Mu?”
Mu Zheng truly needed this break. Compared to other partners, she wasn’t a very “qualified” girlfriend. She was always absent for holidays; even though she sent expensive gifts, gifts were just objects. They couldn’t replace her presence, nor could they go on dates, go shopping, or celebrate birthdays with Fang Ran.
Though Fang Ran never blamed her or brought it up—likely out of concern for her feelings—Mu Zheng felt guilty. Every time she went home and saw Fang Ran smiling and telling her it was okay, she felt terrible.
She had tried to compensate Fang Ran in other ways, but Mu Zheng ultimately felt that material things couldn’t replace emotional ones. If she missed this chance too, it would be truly unfair.
After some thought, Mu Zheng asked, “What is your condition, President Ye?”
Ye Baiwei curled the corner of her lip. “My condition is actually very simple. When you go out with your Alpha, can you take me along?”
Mu Zheng’s face darkened immediately. “What do you mean by that, President Ye?!”
Ye Baiwei said, “Don’t get so worked up, Secretary Mu. I haven’t finished.”
She wasn’t a pervert; she didn’t want to stalk Mu Zheng and her Alpha to see what they did on their date. If she were caught doing that, she’d be more than just a pervert—she’d probably end up in a jail cell.
The reason she wanted Mu Zheng to take her along was primarily to prevent any “accidents” during this time. With Mu Zheng there, she wouldn’t have to worry as much.
“Then what do you mean?”
“My meaning is simple. Bring me along when you go on your date with your Alpha. Don’t misunderstand—I don’t have any ‘special’ fetishes. I just want you to give me a lift.”
“That’s all?”
“Of course. You drop me off and prepare a room for me near where you’re having your date. Rest assured, I have no intention of spying on you. Once you’ve arranged my accommodation, the rest of the time is yours to do as you please.”
“Oh, right.” Ye Baiwei stood up, leaning over the table to get close to Mu Zheng’s face. “I’ll cover all the expenses, including everything you and your partner spend during the date. How about it? For you, this should be a pretty good deal, right?”
As soon as she finished, Mu Zheng started roasting her again in her head.
[Since when did this person become so nice?]
[A sudden discovery of her conscience?]
[But when did this woman ever have a conscience? Wasn’t it dragged away by a dog a long time ago?!]
“Cough, cough, cough—”
Ye Baiwei lowered her head and coughed frantically.
Mu Zheng, bewildered, asked again, “President Ye, if there is a problem with your health, it’s better to see a doctor and take medicine sooner rather than later.”
Ye Baiwei took a deep breath, trying to look calm. “I’m fine. I just choked on my food earlier. I just need some water.”
[Choked?]
[What a pity she didn’t choke to death.]
“Cough, cough, cough—”
Ye Baiwei’s head dropped as she coughed wildly again.
Mu Zheng felt something was off and asked tentatively, “President Ye, you aren’t actually choking, are you?”
Ye Baiwei felt that if this continued, with Mu Zheng’s intelligence, she would definitely realize her inner voice was being heard. Taking another deep breath, she immediately returned to normal. “Cough, I might have caught a cold yesterday. Secretary Mu, please buy some cooling herbal tea for me later.”
Mentioning “yesterday” caused a visible flash of disdain in Mu Zheng’s eyes.
But such was the adult world. Having stayed by Ye Baiwei’s side for so many years, Mu Zheng didn’t find such things scandalous.
At most, she just thought Ye Baiwei had poor character—flirting everywhere without ever truly losing her heart. The objects of her affection changed in waves, but no matter how much she “liked” someone, it never lasted more than three days, and most of them were just one-night stands.
Mu Zheng disliked people like that, regardless of whether they were Alpha, Beta, or Omega. It wasn’t about gender; she just felt that if you truly liked someone, you wouldn’t head straight for the bedroom.
But despite her disdain, Ye Baiwei was still the boss who paid her salary. Therefore, what fault could the boss have? It must be that she, the secretary, wasn’t taking good enough care of her.
“The air conditioning in the room is probably broken; I’ll call a repairman to look at it tomorrow,” Mu Zheng said. “I’ll also add a heater to the room.”
Ye Baiwei realized Mu Zheng’s implication a second later and felt embarrassed. Mu Zheng likely assumed the reason “Ye Baiwei” had health issues was because she had spent too much time “busy” with her one-night stand in the room last night, leading to a chill.
She really, really wanted to explain: I am not THAT Ye Baiwei!!!
But there was no help for it; she was currently inhabiting the original character’s body.
“Cough, so, have you considered what I said earlier, Secretary Mu?”
Mu Zheng was no fool. Proposing such generous terms was unlike Ye Baiwei’s usual style, so she was certain Ye Baiwei was hiding something. “May I ask why you are so insistent on coming with me, President Ye?”
