- Chapter 19 - They're Giving Me Too Much
“Your condition has improved a lot.” Lan Yi let out a sigh of relief after reading the report. “Your pheromones are much more stable than before.” As if remembering something, a melancholic expression appeared on his face.
“That’s great, Uncle Lan,” Shu Qian said with a genuine smile. At least the decisions she made weren’t for nothing.
“It must have been hard on you, Xiao Qian,” Lan Yi said, patting her on the back.
He and Shu Qian’s mother had been close friends for many years. As a fellow Omega, he empathized with his friend’s plight. So when Shu Qian showed up at his door after leaving home, he didn’t hesitate to take her in and help her.
Lan Yi knew that Shu Qian had a trauma about Alpha-Omega relationships because of her mother and had no feelings for the Shu family. However, he was still surprised when she said she wanted to pretend to be a Beta and was even willing to use illegal drugs.
Even though he and Shu Qian repeatedly told her that using Beta drugs and inhibitors together could lead to pheromone imbalance, he couldn’t stop Shu Qian’s persistence.
Most Omegas, after differentiating, would find a compatible Alpha to get through their heat cycle. Inhibitors were only used in case of an emergency.
Lan Yi’s own partner was initially just a person to get through their physiological needs with.
But for Shu Qian, because of her trauma, she hated this method and even despised her identity as an Omega. So, ever since she differentiated, she had been relying on inhibitors to suppress her instincts. Her already unstable pheromones became even more volatile after using the Beta drugs.
It wasn’t until her last checkup that Lan Yi told Shu Qian in a serious tone that her body’s condition wouldn’t allow her to continue using the drugs and that she had to find an Alpha.
That was why Shu Qian was at the Physiological Health Center.
Now that her condition had improved, it meant that Shu Qian had taken his words to heart… The possibility of her pheromones spiraling out of control had forced this proud child to concede. Lan Yi felt a little sad.
“Uncle Lan…” Shu Qian didn’t feel so wronged. She had always been rational and had thought things through. As an Omega, just like an Alpha, she would have different strengths and weaknesses compared to a Beta. Heaven was still fair.
Since she wanted to escape, there had to be something she sacrificed. It was just a matter of finding an Alpha to spend a few nights with, wasting a few days of annual leave, and occasionally working overtime. She could completely accept it.
What’s more, this Alpha was the ideal partner for many Omegas. Shu Qian even felt like she was getting a good deal.
“The Alpha you were paired with must have a very high compatibility, which is why your pheromones were able to stabilize in such a short amount of time,” Lan Yi said, cheering up and analyzing for her.
“In that case, can I shorten the treatment?” Shu Qian said. Everything abroad was already prepared, and she was just waiting to leave.
“Are you in such a hurry to leave?” Lan Yi was a little surprised. “According to the treatment plan at the Physiological Health Center, it would take half a year to complete one cycle.”
Of course, Shu Qian knew. But ever since the business trip, Qi Qing and her relationship had become a little subtle.
Qi Qing was her boss. Even if she wanted to keep her distance, their long hours together made it unavoidable. The instinct from being marked made Shu Qian subconsciously rely on Qi Qing. Often, without even noticing, she would get closer to Qi Qing.
Being close to her Alpha gave the Omega a sense of security. It was this sense of security that made Shu Qian feel uneasy.
Moreover, she found that Qi Qing was also affected by the marking. Perhaps Qi Qing herself hadn’t realized it, but she was paying more attention to her. Every time she turned her head, she would meet Qi Qing’s gaze. In the beginning, she thought it was just a coincidence, but after countless times, she started to observe the Alpha’s behavior and found that she would even find various reasons to prevent Shu Qian from getting close to other Alphas.
They only met for treatment, and there were no feelings between them. If it weren’t for their superior-subordinate relationship, they shouldn’t have had frequent contact, which wouldn’t have led to the current change in their relationship.
All these comfortable feelings were just her pheromones acting up, not her true feelings. Shu Qian was unwilling to let the situation spiral out of control.
“I don’t want to stay here anymore,” Shu Qian said, looking down vaguely.
In Lan Yi’s eyes, he only thought she had suffered too much in the Shu family and wanted to leave to start over. He let out a deep sigh. “Recently, the research institute has made progress with the pheromone stabilizer.”
Lan Yi’s partner was a scholar who specialized in Alpha-Omega pheromone research and had been committed to solving pheromone problems.
Shu Qian looked up suddenly.
“They want to find an Omega for human trials. Although they haven’t found any side effects in animal trials, it’s still different when it’s used on a human body.”
“I’m willing,” Shu Qian said without hesitation. She knew about this pheromone stabilizer. Its purpose was to help patients whose pheromones were out of control due to various medical issues.
“…” Lan Yi already knew what Shu Qian’s answer would be, which was why he hadn’t told her until now.
This Omega was more decisive and brave than many Alphas he had seen. Only a fossilized and corrupt family like the Shu family could be so blind not to see such an intelligent child. Lan Yi opened a drawer and took out the documents he had already prepared.
“I understand. This is the human trial consent form. After you’ve read it and signed it, I’ll submit your application, and they will notify you.”
“Thank you, Uncle Lan,” Shu Qian said with heartfelt thanks.
She knew that if it weren’t for his friendship with her mother, he wouldn’t have risked offending the Shu family to help her. Yet he still reached out to her when she came to him on a whim. Shu Qian kept it in her heart.
After she stepped out of the hospital, the heavy weight on Shu Qian’s heart finally lifted. Even the gloomy day seemed brightened.
She had just talked to Uncle Lan’s partner on the phone. He had thoroughly explained the effects of the drug and the possible side effects.
The key point was that if a stable Alpha’s pheromones were used as an aid during the period of using the drug, the success rate would be much higher. This meant that staying with Qi Qing during this time would be very helpful for her pheromone balance.
Shu Qian was in a difficult position. She didn’t want to get too close to Qi Qing, but to achieve her goal, she had to get closer.
The vibration in her bag interrupted her thoughts. She took out her phone, and when she saw Qi Qing’s name, she didn’t even notice the hidden joy that flashed through her eyes.
She stared at the name for two seconds before answering. “CEO Qi?” She had taken the day off to go to her checkup and had already explained it to Xu Yuxi.
Qi Qing was silent for two seconds before she spoke. “Where are you?”
“I took the day off today, CEO Qi. I have some personal matters to take care of,” Shu Qian replied distantly.
The other party seemed to not have heard Shu Qian’s coldness and said with a detached tone, “Are you done? If you’re done, cancel your leave and come back to work.”
“CEO Qi…” Shu Qian frowned slightly, a little unhappy. She was her boss, but this was too bossy.
“Come back to work. Today won’t be considered a day off, and on top of your regular salary, you’ll also get overtime pay.”
What’s the point of overtime pay? Shu Qian wanted to yell at her. However, her rationality quickly reminded her that overtime pay was calculated at 1.5 times her regular wage. So if she went back to work now, she wouldn’t have her salary deducted, and she would also get an additional 1.5 times her pay.
It was… a little too much. Shu Qian heard herself say, “Okay, I’ll be right back.”
